100% agree did 35 years of service, with many tours, all across the globe, we have always been short on equipment, CF members have always been there to make up that difference, and while in peace time that is ok, but there is no excuses for our government and citizens to send our troops into harms way with out the most modern equipment available...
Waiting for enough soldiers to perish before rushing in new equipment sends one message only to the military....it is cheaper to bury our soldiers, airmen, and sailors than it is to purchase new top of the line equipment...Canadian citizens must be proud on all the money they have saved, i'm sure it is of comfort to those 159 members families that came home in flagged draped coffins that this nation put in as much effort to foreign policy as those CF members did...may we never forget their sacrifice and may we not forget just how little our government and citizens did for that very same foreign policy...
members signed on to unlimited liability upon signing up for the forces...it is to bad our citizens and government do not have the same patriotic sense duty / country.
      Signed disappointed vet...

I'm sorry to say but to serve country and flag is an honor and a privilege warriors have , defend the virtues and values of the nation its constitution it's sovereignty and independence is axiomatic in any member of armed forces around the world.
If an eventual government or even some people among the nation is unwilling to recognize the sacrifice of the members of the armed forces or even insult and despise soldiers, that is no excuse to falter to our duties to the nation, in previous comments I mention how the WOKE culture is affecting the soul of the nation your comment even if unwilling and even if I'm sure you don't support that is a small token of how much this cultural movement affects the country that even members of the armed Forces think in terms of Material value rather than duty and Honor.
My speech might sound not realistic or pragmatic in real life however if you ever where in that fox hole and your buddies are bleeding left and right what value has money when you are 5 minutes away from death, money can give you many things glory in the battlefield is not one of them.
The day Glory for the nation means little or comes second than material values to the troops the country is in huge problems.
But is not your fault you are just one more involuntary victim of the Woke infestation against the values of freedom world wide.

Was at sea once as an air force member with the Sea King. I remember an admiral came on board and talk about difficulty crewing ship. His solutions, once your ship would be in dry dock, he wanted sailors to sail on another ship… and instead of 3 years posting to a ship, make it a 5 years… that’s one great way to motivate your people… Also a general housed a town hall on a base, talking about pilot shortage and high volume of voluntary release… his answer “Don’t forget that you are officers first”! Again, great way to motivate people!! Great leadership in the CAF…

Beyond that the management was absolutely stunned. Any private sector management like that would have been fired in a matter of weeks.

You don't get recruits by lowering standards, pushing DEI and social justice and encouraging nose rings and purple hair. You get recruits by maintaining tough standards, being professional and running an organization that a smart, fit, patriotic youth would be proud to be part of. My Dad di 37 yrs, my brother 38 and I did 35. My son is gearing up to join - despite the loss of direction. It's bad but we hear the same stuff from the UK and the US. @@evilbred974 These are all good points that I could/should have enumerated in my post. I suppose I was looking at it from a 'warrior calling' perspective than just as a job choice. But you are correct attracting good people is highly competitive these days.
The recruiting process is agonizingly long. Particularly in the reserves where a 17 yr old looking for a part time job may have to wait a year for enrolment. A previous army commander was in the process of fixing that ... then he was posted... then he released and the plague hit...
The CAF can still appeal to a niche market: high school grads who do not intend to go into university. In their selectiveness, police forces want applicants (if they are white males) to have degrees. A degree is no guarantee of quality and is certainly not needed for the CAF in order to be a soldier.
There does appear to be an element that believes that lowering standards will somehow entice more recruits. If someone needs purple hair in order to consider joining, they are not likely to be the kind of soldier we want.

131 now, its 631 regular force members to 1 GOFO. US has 2-5k, 1 GOFO. So we are probably top heavy, but it also may be a result of the type of missions we take on, and the fact that there have not been that many casualties in the ranks, like in previous world conflicts, hence many officers grow old in their job... however, what this also means is that if Canada was to make a sudden draft or multiply their forces to be 10 times bigger, they will have the officers to get the job done. So it can be seen a strength in keeping lots of experience officers just in case. I think I prefer having that than what Stalin did during the purge, and the Russian army was a disaster in 1941 Barbarossa as he killed off all the capable officers because he was too afraid that they would challenge his authority... it took a lot of dead Russians and Stalingrad, before new experienced officers were promoted up the ranks.... This idea that battle will just make commanders is folly, it will just lead to loss and quick death. When Hitler invaded Russia in 1941, they ran and he soon had 3 million POWs, the problem was there were no good leaders left after the Stalin purges of the 30s. They actually had to search the gulags and reenlist officers that were considered enemies of the state, or enemies of Stalin, in order to mount a proper counter offensive. Only then, where they able to mount a proper counter attack against the Germans, but do not ever forget that England and America supplied incredible amounts of resources to Stalin during that fight so that they would be successful against the Germans. It is really important that people understand history otherwise they will repeat it.
Basic training takes 6 weeks in the Canadian armed forces, after that you learn specialties... but boot camp is short. To train an officer, takes years and years. I am fine with this model. yeah i am from Calgary Alberta and i understand a lot as to why recruitment has been low, its because we have a huge amount of people coming from over seas to seek refuge, and they don't want to do what they were already doing back home. a lot of people, at least a lot of people in my school are Muslim or Arab and it kind of frustrates me because most people who come here usually either take our jobs, they do nothing, or become associated or join gangs, have a shoot out, kill a bunch of people, are arrested and then are thrown back out just to end up doing the same crap all over again. hell i know at least most people at school don't even speak English. and because of the whole white people coming and sending native kids to residential schools our curriculum has to have indigenous meaning and so on. when November 11th came around all they did at the assembly was talk about a black company that fought in WWII and no one else was talked about like bro i understand that the schools supposed to represent, respect, and honor indigenous people but I mean come on, don't just talk about a group of people who fought because there was so many Canadian brothers and sisters who died at war and they only honored a certain group of people. after that I was furious. And most importantly I know a lot of people who have parents who are across seas fighting right now or deployed, hell my best friends mom is out there fighting but does the school care. FUCK NO.

Have you been on a Canadian Forces Base recently? You can forget the smartly turned out soldiers, sailor's and air-crew of the 90's or early 2000's. Basic Training doesn't have any weapon's training any more - that's right - no more weapon's training. Personal grooming? Time was when it took a medical chit to be allowed to grow a beard. Nope, not any more. Seems like most men are going around with facial hair in various lengths. I was at CFB Kingston last week, and saw a Master Warrant Officer with a huge beard down past his collar-bone - he looked like a biker. High-and-tight? Not required. Bloused pant legs. Nope. Berets pulled over the head like a toque. It's all about 'feelings' now, and not about duty. It's all subjective and how do I feel today. The Forces have been in garrison, tied-up or on the ground since the Liberals came to power. There are more General Staff in the CAF with 55,000 members than in the USMC with 180,000 standing members. Kissing-ass and getting promoted is what it's all about now. Forget about doing what is right. No sense of duty to Canada, but a huge focus on self. It is a National SHAME.

While I still think the bulk of our servicemen are honorable people who deserve our support, if the woke agenda being pushed upon the CAF doesn't stop, within a few years it would be difficult to trust or respect the character of anyone who's still part of it, much less care what might happen to them if they ever see combat.

Under Harper, the strength of the Regular Force increased from 60,000 to 68,000 albeit it was reduced somewhat again after the recession hit. During his time in office the RCAF got C-17s, C-130Js, and CH-47s. The Army got Leopard 2A6s, M777 artillery, LAV 6.0, RG-31 MRAPs, Counter IED suites, Complete replacement of soldier personal kit, TAPVs, Armored Engineer Vehicles, and a host of upgrades to existing equipment. He cut the largest Shipbuilding contract in Canadian history for replacements for the frigates as well as the Arctic Patrol Ships and vessels for the Coast Guard and put in place Project Resolve which provided the Navy with an interim replenishment capacity to support task groups - which the Liberal’s all but halted trying to get their hands into the till and purged Admiral Norman for doing his job. And Harper did this all while bringing us through the worse global recession since the 1920s.
Now, under the Liberals, we spend $29.1 billion on National defense which is an exaggeration as that also includes money for the Coast Guard and RCMP that has nothing to do with defense while we blow an astounding $46.5 billion annually just to service the massive and crippling debt they have incurred by pillaging the treasury for their friends.
In at least one trade (Marine Engineer of which I can speak with experience) senior officers, with some complicit Senior CPOs waged a war on the trade for 30 years and is now all but destroyed despite repeated warnings of the impact they were having. The Canadian military needs to be separated from the Ministry of Defense as it was prior to 1974 and forcibly if necessary, rebuilt on the Australian model which is not only getting far more bang for the defense buck, but completely capable of fulfilling its functions.

I served in a Canadian Armed Forces infantry regiment during the 1970s. I still remember the protesters with their righteous slogans. One that really stood out was , 'SUPPOSE THEY GAVE A WAR AND NOBODY CAME?" My reply to those protesters was, "Suppose they gave a war and JUST THE OTHER SIDE CAME?"
I also feel that many citizens of Canada feel the same as the citizens in Rudyard Kipling's poem TOMMY. That's a poem that's well worth reading.

Just read 300 comments. Maybe two could be partially considered positive. All the rest agree with the video. Personally, I was a cadet 6 years, CIC reservist officer for 7 years (my wife the same for 6)., and cadet parent for 7 years. Both kids were/are in cadets. Just told my son yesterday that, turning 17 next week, he's getting to be what they call "military age." I told him, "Do not join, if there's a draft, don't be drafted." Thankfully, he has asthma and the daughter has bad knees.
Here's one of the reasons - from nearly 30 years involved with the cadet program, whose stated aim is to promote the idea of joining the forces, all I ever saw was less, less and less. The program barely even exists now. I heard they might be getting rid of summer camps, although I can't confirm that. Isn't it odd that in the 60s we had several hundred CF-100s and CF-104s, and had pilots for them all, with a population half of what we have today, and now we need mercenaries to fly?
Small idea: actually take cadets up in Hercs and Griffons and Chinooks, and see what happens to recruiting numbers.

Honestly as a 24 year old im actually scared of what our country will become in my lifetime let alone my children and descendants, I can honestly say that i believe that Canada cannot defend it self, whether its that crackdown on guns for hunters, or the Military, the amount of land we have and the size of our military, it scary, India becoming a World power and then getting a slap on the wrist when you assassinated that Sikhs leader on Canadian soil, in order for canada to defend it self from and type of attack it would be with either heavy reliance on our southern neighbors or a radical shift in the current Canadian identity, Im okay with the immigrants i understand the need to find a better life but the gross amount we take in before worrying about our own citizens first is crazy, and its only going up last year was 400k something and 2024 is already projected at nearly 600k, soon i feel and believe their wont be a Canada anymore, and a Canadian will no longer mean what it used to be instead it would just mean a cesspool of immigrants, Canadians as a whole are soon to be outnumbered by our Alien Friendly government, that sees foreigners as more important than a canadian

im out of the military now and it was probably what turned my young patriotic mind with absolute hatred for Trudeau the lack of personal is only one of the problems any leadership worth a damn has already been discharged for one reason or another replaced by inferior trash who are a bunch of yes men to the civilian goverment(we tell you what we need not the other way around so you can save some money for the year and spend 10x the next because the trach you got us sucks), the logistics of the army can not even be sustained now and were at peace. Literally got to scrap one good truck for parts so that we can fix the others. I left the army not proud of my service but how I wasted my youth on it. The lowering of the standards was horrible they told us " the canadian army must represent the civilian population" well F that. Im still have my name in the reserves so if we have to go to war I will go but I will probably die from my own equipment before making contact with the enemy

Nope I have very little respect for the Canadian Military after having served with them Afghanistan and Iraq. I have seen whole platoons of Canadian troops that have fouled their underwear under fire. Vietnam and Prior, Canadian Military was a force to be reckoned with, now it is not so. No BMI Standard, you can be 5' tall and 300lbs and they will still take you. You can be 60 and in a wheel chair and they will still take you. Not allowed to run in their combat boots, a Hurt Feelings form if your DI yells at you. (plus all the other stuff I have been told.) The Canadian Air farce can't even shoot down a Chinese Spy Balloon and had to call the U.S. to do it for them! It would only take 1 platoon of U.S. Marines to take over the entire Canadian Military. (Believe it or not there are more Retired Combat Marines in Canada than there are actual active duty Canadian troops!) Scary how low they have fallen.

It's easy to criticize and focus on the negatives. People rarely want to speak about the benefits/positive changes that military service can provide. Don't rely on UA-cam videos or the internet to shape your views and sway you from making a life changing decision like joining the military. Online content creators only seek to garner views as that is their main metric/bottom line. And the best way to do that is to use video titles/video topics with negative connotations because that's always proven to get people to click.
Please keep this in mind when seeking out information about joining the military.

After 22 years I released from CAV, even though I am still eligible for another 10 years service, I could not accept the lowering of standards and new age mandates from leftist bureaucrats! That coupled with very poor top leadership that were given more pips and crowns in order to fill positions of senior officers responsible for critical decisions affecting service people careers and performance , again these were bureaucratic promotions to please civil movements and minority grandstanders pressuring govt!
Shame on the previous three ministers of national defence, for destroying the reputation of a once proud and well respected military, now turning it into circus, there are some government parties that just have no idea about national defence or homeland security and have no business interfering.
