    Greater pointers on what to expect and how to manage your expectations. The language barrier is no joke. I’ve been studying Vietnamese for months and the progress is SLOW! My first 2 trips to northern Vietnam I had an English speaking guide with me to soften the barrier. Heading back to Vietnam for lunar new year to hang with a family in Quang Ninh. One day I’ll make it down south. Every video of yours tempts me further.

    I always enjoy your information. My Daughter in Law watched your video about filling out the visa form and received hers on the first try. I plan on a trip to DaNang in April 2025.

    I live in Japan. The number one con is language. Just as you said, getting to a deeper level with locals is difficult & taking care of certain things like banking & having a discussion to understand things with a doctor or dentist is tough. Before Japan, I lived in Guam. I remember being freaked out by the geckos on the walls. After a while, I started to see them as pets. I now yearn to return to the tropical culture that really bothered me when I lived there. I hope to return to that kind of lifestyle but in a much cheaper place like SE Asia.

    100% agree with everything you said. Love Da Nang. Very interesting place to live. Every day is different and people so friendly, polar opposite of US. My diet is free of heavy processed food of the US and instead healthy and fresh. 1/5 the cost of my life in US brings so much freedom. Every day I learn something new about the world around me and about myself. I feel free in Da Nang, and actually SE Asia as a SE Asian Slow Traveler as opposed to the US. No stress for me also, unlike the US. I have so many local friends who invite me to be everything unlike the US which is very isolated. I’ve been in the hospital in Da Nang. It’s ok. Not managed care like in the US. Da Nang is a great home base for me as a Slow Traveler. I love my life. Full of invigorating experiences and very peaceful at the same time.

    I lived in Da Nang and Hoi An Vietnam for about 10 months in 2019. I rented a house and used it as a hub to travel around South East Asia. I left just before the Pandemic and never got a chance to motorbike from HCMC to Hanoi (Top Gear Vietnam Special). I'm coming back in March to do it. Anyone interested in joining.

    I'm so glad Vietnam is different from Australia. I really miss my street food and cafe soda from the bike ladies in the morning. I'm so hanging out for a banh mi heo with crispy pork and my Pho bo with bean shoots and greens. There's nothing like riding on the back of a Grab bike. It's like a cross between public transport and a carnival ride. I may even get to ride on the HCMC metro if it actually opens soon. Btw we have a crap load more coack roaches here in far north queensland than I've ever seen in Vietnam. And to my knowledge there's no crocs in Da nang or Saigon.

    As long a roaches don't infiltrate my unit. Very few places can be as bad as the Philippines. Been there for about a month. Almost every condo I stayed in was infested in roaches. Coming from the Philippines where everything is so dirty and the infrastructure is so bad into Vietnam should be like going from Hell to Heaven for me.

      Yeah I doubt that tho. As a Viet, I’m being honest by kinda agree with how our Gov not into retirement visa for now. Welcome tourists all the way but for living here, people have to put a little more effort or else, please enjoy all you want in other countries which more comfortable and convenient for them. Personally I’m not into the idea of the country being flood by tons of foreigners, rather keep the status low

    Surprised you didn’t mention driving in Danang. Literally one of the worst drivers in the world! nobody’s keeping traffic rules, reckless driving, not using indicators, cars will cut you off in every opportunity and etc. Having stress and anger every time I’m on the road.

    Very informative. Your Vietnamese sounds great! But that segment where you explain common usage of familial terms would have been better if you dressed more like the men at the table with you. It'd show more cultural awareness.

    • @TravisTravelsVN
      @TravisTravelsVN  8 годин тому

      Fair point. These are my neighbors and we are not even at a coffee shop just sitting in front of the Uncle's house. The men are going to work but in the evenings everyone sits around with their shirt off. No judgements on clothing in Vietnam, I wouldn't be out in public in just a bathing suit but that's about it

    I have been taking classes for a year daily to learn Vietnamese. Very frustrating sometimes. You have all these tones, and even then they double up so many words.....just why? WHY VIETNAMESE TELL ME WHY!!! and don't get me started on d, why do they even have this one? just make it y. Still, I love learning and getting better at it though.
