Funny thing about Six Flags, is that the parks vary so wildly, that there cannot be one solid answer for the entire chain. What might work for Great America, might not work for Magic Mountain. What might work for Over Texas, might not work for Great Escape. I wonder what Air Time Thrills thinks about this!

Honestly reminds me of Cedar Fair and Knott's Berry Farm. There was a time when Cedar Fair tried desperately to reshape and mould the park to become one with their standardized affair elsewhere but it wasn't doing them any good. A big focus on thrills and teens/thrill seekers and cutting most everything else that didn't fit the bill. However sometime in the mid 2010s a change in management focused on being a locally-driven park with an emphasis on events and family affair, as well catering more towards families in a more proactive sense. And the efforts paid off and Knott's Berry Farm is honestly a jewel that sits alongside Cedar Point.
And look at Disney. They've been trying to assimilate Disneyland under the same rules and regulations that worked at Walt Disney World, even though both resorts have very different demographics and desires and because of that they're really tarnishing the image they've built up in California.
Kind of goes to show that trying to homogenize theme and amusement parks doesn't really work out and that parks should be built and maintained to cater to their immediate local customer base rather than trying to be a one-size-fits-all ordeal.

@@TheOnlyBongo Yeah, Disney completely ruined California Adventure. The whole point of California Adventure was to be a Cali themed park, and they literally just slapped Disney branding all over everything to make it fit the Disney brand. I'm pretty sad about that.

I wouldn't mind no new additions if every single park spent money on upgrades all around. Improving all reliability on attractions so that while nothing is being added, what the parks have are all rideable. Some rides simply need refurbishments. Also opening up/cleaning areas and restaurants that are always closed and/or look abandoned. Improve the experience if you want us to pay more, otherwise, nothing is going to change.

Definitely. If operations were better and they spent more money on them and maintenance the coasters would have more cycles and ride time. You'd get the same capacity increase as adding a new coaster. Sure it's nothing you can advertise but when people come to your park and have a good time it makes them actually want to spend money and come back.
Great America is my home park and I could totally agree with his argument that an S&S Axis prototype. Even if it was a killer ride, the facts are it'd be short, the lines would be long, and it'd be down all the time. I'd rather them spend 1/10th the money to refurbish American Eagle, get it racing again, and have it no longer stacking two trains like crazy by using the money from a new coaster to pay staff better to get the place more appropriately staffed.
With how things are going I'm tempted to just cancel my grandfathered in membership and take a 3 year break from the park while they figure their shit out or go bankrupt again.

Love it how people with no business experience complain when, Magic Mountain doesn't add a new, 20 plus million coaster every year. Lol. The current, CEO was hired to help pay down, Magic Mountains MASSIVE DEBT. Magic Mountain has been trying to pay down it's debt since, 2009 when it went into bankruptcy. 2009, Magic Mountain was, 2.7 Billion in Debt. After bankruptcy, went down to 1.3 Billion. Since 2009, trying to pay down that 1.3 Billion in debt, Magic Mountain honestly hasn't really paid down the debt, they've just been paying on and really only paying down the interest payments since 2009. At some point, Magic Mountain has to start actually paying down the massive debt it has, or the majority share holders will end up selling the park to land/home developers that are already buying and building all around the park in Valencia right now. So for all of you, theme park "experts" if you want Magic Mountain to be around for another 50 years, they can't just always be in Billion dollar debts. Or.....pay triple the amount for park admission and don't complain about it and keep going while paying triple to get in. Disneyland and Calufornia adventure in Cali has such high park price admission because they build 100 plus million dollar themed rides. Typically, thrill ride coaster visitors don't have the income to spend 140 bucks on admission tickets like non thrill ride visitors do at Disneyland Parks. Thrill ride visitors guests are between the ages of, 24 to 34. Majority of people in this age group (closer to the 20s age group range) don't have the income to spend 140 plus to just get in a park. So.......just relax and stop crying and put your milk bottles down and be patient for about 3 years while Magic Mountain pays down it's debt.

Six Flags is smart to not invest in the Axis idea, it just screams problems. The one good thing about the RMC raptor prototype is that its simple, it doesn't reinvent the wheel but creates a simplified axel in which the wheel can turn. The more complex the rides get the more potential problems arise and for a brand like Six Flags they just can't afford those kinds of problems. Cedar Fair can afford to have a protoype or two get lost to the engineering dust bin, Six Flags needs to keep its head straight and just stick to fun, reliable rides for now. Dr. Diabolical was by far the most sensible choice, if anything they could use more dive coasters across more parks because that is what brings the GP.

I don’t agree with Six Flags’ strategy. This isn’t Disney or Universal. People go to Six Flags for roller coasters. That’s their niche.
Not investing in new thrill rides is a mistake in my opinion. Some parks could stand to be cleaned up a bit and maybe improve the food. Otherwise stay in your lane and invest in great roller coasters. That’s why people go.

@Tom W the problem for both SF as well as CF is that they own too many properties and simply don't have the budget for expensive new rides.
A big part of what got the company into this financial mess in the first place was buying up too many parks and then dumping expensive coasters every other year into some of them WITHOUT waiting for the return on the investment but their biggest mistake was the pointless coaster arms race between MM and CP.. They should have invested those coasters into the parks that could have benefited from them more than SFMM just for the sake of winning a stupid title that the majority of the general public could care less about although CF is equally guilty of this as well by giving CP coaster after coaster when their smaller parks could benefit from such investments far more.

    • @DarvakSondrath
      @DarvakSondrath 2 роки тому +7

@@Johnnyiswhere the problem with that is rides are constantly evolving, and people always want to see the next big new thrill. If Six Flags stops competing in the evolution and says, we have enough coasters, we don't need to build more, fans will eventually come to say, we're already rode all the six flag rides, we don't need to go to that park anymore. Universal's got a 5 new rides since we last went, lets go there instead.
There's also the fact that rides have life cycles, they can only be repaired for so long before they need to be outright replaced. Some rides are at the end of that cycle. Other rides just need to be replaced because they are not popular, or were designed poorly and are costing the park more to maintain than they are earning.

I think Michigan’s Adventure Plan for Six Flags overall isn’t the greatest. Yeah, Magic Mountain can stand to just get beautification along with Great America, but other parks need replacement roller coasters and other rides. Six Flags Over Texas has a lot of rides nearing the end of their life like Judge Roy Scream or Titan. Both are requiring lots of maintenance to keep going. Hell, I never saw Judge Roy Scream open this year. You can’t just finally open Aquaman and call it a day. That’s not even getting to parks like Frontier City or Great Escape. If you want Universal prestige, you need to have that level of park and rides. If half your rides are going to fall apart in the next three years, you might have an issue, and no amount of better benches and trash cans are going to solve it.

What incentive do banks have to keep lending six flags cash to buy multi million dollar rides every year? Because this notion that six flags pays for its rides in cash and in one payment is so false. Rides that cost more than a few million dollars are all financed and not fully paid for up front. Six flags can only keep building multi million dollar rides every year, if it can keep boring hundreds of millions of dollars every year......banks have started to close its doors to six flags........next 3 years are going to be focused on making money now and paying down it's debts so in the next 5 to 7 years, six flags can start building massive and great rides again every year. So no, Mr. "EXPERT" magic mountain cannot invest even more multi million dollar rides when at some point (like now) they have to pay down tge massive debt they have or within the next 5 to 10 years, they will have to start selling off its parks to cover and pay off the debt. Or, we can go with your plan and get even more into debt just to have a few more years of excitement just to then have no magic mountain to visit in 10 years.

Yeah I'm not too thrilled about Zambezi at WoF. I get it, it pays homage to the original (even though you can actually still ride it in Colombia where it was relocated) but still we should have gotten something more modern like a launch coaster. Sure this coaster will probably be great at first but like any other traditional woody it will be rougher than a old arrow coaster by it's 5th year. Granted it has Titan track in parts of the ride which is another thing that bothers me, I feel like that's lazy. Why not make the entire track Titan track?

I totally agree with some of your other takes tho... There's literally nowhere to put an Axis coaster at Great America 🥴 and after DejaVu, the park has avoided prototypes. Maxx Force is nowhere near a prototype... It's literally at least the 3rd or 4th generation ride of it's type. Goliath and X-Flight were the *second* coaster of their type to be built. They learned their lesson when it comes to taking risks like that.

I remember when playing roller coaster tycoon and even in that computer game, after awhile people got tired of certain rides. So then if your space is limited, you have to start building new rides to keep people coming back. I remember many years ago, I was excited when six flags had a new ride. It's what gets you hyped up. I remember at Great America, when they built Hurricane Harbor, that was awesome. But to access Harbor, I believe you had to walk into the Six Flags park. The inconvenience is where you park your car because you would be walking a long way with your swim suite. And lockers, be ready to fork out like 15 or 20 dollars. I remember one time I wanted to go to Hurricane Harbor and ironically they were only open on weekends. It's great when parks offer options to ride roller coasters and water parks, but it's kind of hard to do both in one day and then having to carry everything with you. For how far people have to walk, at least some of these parks offer a shuttle or a bus. I don't recall six flags great america ever offering this as an option. As I get older, it's the long drive just to get to six flags that I don't look forward to. Then when all there is to do is go on rides, it's not what I'm into that much anymore. I prefer going to the shows etc or doing other activities that aren't just going on rides. The last time I went to great america was over 10 years ago. They are supposed to be the cleanest park and the parking lot after I left was just trashed. Then of course worse thing is to use their restrooms when it smells like a smoke house because designated smoking zones from what I remember were just outside of the restrooms. I just remember for freight fest the weather was so cold and I felt so lonely because I went by myself.

    Viper: Lap bars
X2: Fix the shaking for god's sake!
Riddler's Revenge: Sit down/floorless conversion. Ideally sit-down because we already have a floorless
Scream: Theme and landscape the ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The new CEO is only interested in lining his pocket... According to some patrons, many of the parks are starting to look ratty and unkempt, while competitor Cedar Fair keeps their holdings fresh and well maintained... What's going on here? Did the old dancing man finally keel over and die?

The Maxx Force ride honestly wasn't that great and mostly due to how short it is. Like yeah most coasters are short, but it felt like we were on it for like 30 seconds. That plus the 45 minute line was annoying.

Frankly, infrastructure is something more parks should focus on. It's ok adding coasters or attractions every year, but (at least on the last park days I had) finding ways around the park or things in them for customer comfort. I hope the idea of adjusting infrastructure for the next few years could indeed be a strategic move (especially as the major issue I keep hearing about SFMM is navigating it) to make space or sensible navigation issues FOR new attractions.
The idea of having everything controlled via app is the best move too. Seeing Flash Pass tags and suff was always concerning - with the idea they were going to fall off. As someone who wears a watch I also don't want to be in LA and have, say, a magic band (for Disney hotel access), a watch and a flash pass/queues jump wristband.
I don't think going "oh noes, no rides now" is the best option. If you don't agree with the moves being made, look at alternatives in your region. Let's be fair, most markets have at least one alternative to Six Flags parks. I definitely think it'll be worth watching them for the next few years before declaring Six Flags "dead" and claiming the CEO doesn't know anything - this could actually be a sensible move in the long run especially after the massive crash the hospitality industry has taken. Covid may be behind us but think of the hundreds of millions of dollars SF/CF and the like lost over that period...

The only non-ride thing I think would make the parks much better is landscaping an maintenance everywhere continuously all year... I haven't been to SFoT in ages but it's consistently glaring that theming is broken, dirty, or just gone because it is cheaper to not have a pool of water or to replace dead plants... or to pay someone to clean. That would help create a more "premium" experience like the CEO says he wants to do... and not require new rides.

You do realize the current CEOs job/orders from its board of directors and its majority shareholders are ordering him to start to pay down six flags MASSIVE 1 PLUS BILLION in debts now. Just before 2009, six flags had, 2.7 Billion in debts. After filling for bankruptcy in 2009, they had to still retain 1.3 Billion in debts. Since 2009, six flags hasn't paid down any of its debts, just added some more to it, only being able to afford to pay the interest on its debts.....you do know that businesses that are in the billion dollar plus debt range doesn't Stay in business long when it doesn't make an effort to pay down it's debts.....because banks will stop lending massive amounts of cash to six flags when it's obvious that six flags has no intention to pay down it's debts. From 1997 to 2004, six flags (especially magic mountain) was adding multi million dollar rides every year. At one year, 2003, Magic Mountain added 3 new rides that were all insanely expensive. Costing all on average, 15 to 20 million each. From 1993 to 2003, six flags added 1 billion dollars in new debt in just rides. Six flags is a business. Not a thrill ride charity.

@@deepatterson1835 i get it, I think. Lol so you want a new branding change? Like a name make over? The 1.3 billion in current debt is its short term debt it's Long term debt is, 2.6 billion. Long term debt means, if six flags keeps going on its past/current track before the new CEO took over last year and it's current and past pace of new rides every year, a company can push out some debts over 10 years. So if six flags doesn't make any financial moves/ changes to start paying off its debts, in 10 years they will go from its 1.3 billion current debt to 2.6 billion in debts in just 10 years from now. So the Golden question is, what does the CEO do to honestly pay down this debt to not have to ve forced to sell from its share and stock holders. Six flags hasn't made net profit in years.
