It is so satisfying bringing old rusty tools back to life! Watch as I take my friends beaten up chisel and restore it back to it's true form.
Hello Samourai, that line is the quench line from the hardening process!! (it shows up with the acid). For the rust some straight 7% vinaigre works just as well (takes a little longer though!! Love the process, i wish i could get (make) myself a benchtop belt sander!!
Why would anyone dislike this video? He's repaying a friend by making his tool nice and useable again. That should speak volumes!
bcs some ppl always click dislike - like a habit,,, doesnt matter tho - either way any click adds to his score so the samu is happy :)
One person complained in the comments that he thought the handle should be removed. There's someone that will not like just about anything.
because its unnecessary. the chisel was fine before he "restored" it. after a few weeks or so of using that chisel its going to look like it original did. back in the day people did not make their tools nice and shiny because they used them all the time
@@MickyRichards Did you ever think that just maybe it's a nostalgia thing?
@@HoUsEoFcAtS78 tools in the past rarely looked new because they were used heavily. keeping its old patina would be more nostalgic
So nice to see this video! A truly sharp tool is a blessing to use. thank you for saving this neglected tool
That line is the quench line I believe. Thanks for the video brother.
old slicks and chisels are Definetly worth restoring . They have better steel in them than many new ones have .
HA. was already loving the video, BUT when the chisel started talking I loved it more
agreed, when the chisel said "I don't wanna go back" i was in tears laughing.
Thanks hun
A talking chisel ... that really made my day. Cheers!!
It's always nice to see an weathered tool brought back to life, nice video!
A really cheap and effective way to remove and convert rust is to use milkstone cleaner sold at places like Tractor supply. It comes in an orange liquid and is used to clean dairy tanks and piping etc. You can get a gallon for about $12 and it's composed of about 55% phosphoric acid; dilute it 1 part acid to 3 parts water. It converts rust to a black oxide that stops the formation of rust and seems to help the tool hold on to protective oils better, all while giving it a nice gun metal color. Cheers!
4 years on, but good ol ways is surely appreciated by those willing to add to their knowledge. tks.
about 18 years ago i bought an Ohio tool works Slick for 10 buckscat a garage sale . i wouldn't sell it for $500 bucks now . i like it better than my newer sorby slicks as far as holding an edge and ease of sharpening . When its freshly sharp , its REALLY SHARP ! like surgical sharp . It cuts White or Red Oak , Locust , Bull pine , or Cypress like butter . i bought a big set of Old Buck Brothers chisels , cleaned them up and rehandled them in rosewood similar to a Diamic or Marples pattern handle profile and i used them a Lot . Same performance as the ohio slick versus newer tools . So i still keep them well oiled and sharpened in rust paper and a canvas tool bag when i need em . along with the usual framing tools , saws , etc . Makes it a lot easier for me to just grab the 2 bags of tools i keep ready for just about any job i wanna mess with .
Really nice job. Glad to see you did not completely sand or grind away the natural finish. The age always look the best!
Was so happy to see a new Samurai posting. Good vid, loved the chisel! Stoked to hear what else is coming :)
That line would not be from being stored in a bucket. That is the heat treated line from hardening. Beautiful sharp.
Now that was a peaceful video - thanks, Jessie - your Makers Mob group and Facebook group are friggin’ fantastic. I get so much out of it and a great group of people!
There are few things as satisfying as restoring a tool to it's former glory, love, love ,love
Thankyou Jesse,awesome job.
I was just about to leave the video when the chisel started talking. I laughed so hard that my head hurt.
Good to see you back doing proper vids

Wow, very nice job samurai.
great vid Samurai. soooo funny when the chisel spoke lolllll
a chisel has been restored by you. you do very well
That's some seriously ASMR chiselling right there!
Can’t find any videos like that 😢
What a great vid just made me smile watching you bring that baby back to life
Love the chisel talk
Hahahaha the talking chisel at the end got me good 😂
That dark ring is where its hardended
Ryder Christen - that’s what she said.
Oh man that is, Slick. Did I just say that? As always, nice job.
You make a very good video. I would like to see a glimpse of the flat side, the real cutting edge side of the chisel after you've polished it, even if you think it's boring. I will find it instructive. Thanks, to you, Young Sensei.
Who doesn’t want to just be sharp and shiny?? Nice vid, thanks for posting.
What a satisfaction to watch...
Shows how you love your work ... doing what you love is ultimate.
Nicely done!
Great job
Well done, nice firmer! 👏👏👏
That line is the hardening line where the softer metal meets the hard.
Eric Laudon + Or where the martensitic steel was welded to the pearlitic steel.
I think it was a line created by aliens to gauge our ability to tolerate the unknown.
That line is called a Metrisincal Highline. It is a part of the old manufacturing of North Carolina blacksmiths in the 12th century that fought the Avengers i have no idea what im talking about.
Marvelous job. Bravo.
Great to see another video years have gone by and still watch your videos be great to visit sometime and help out
thanks for the free plans
Nice, real nice !
Who needs power tools with chisels that sharp
Very good restoration bro 👍👍👍👍
Awesome video bud
Wow. You seems to be a good teacher👍
How can anyone down vote this video. Excellent work
Great job!
lost it when you started talking to the chisel. A few weeks ago I was making stair stringers with a friend, he over cut with the circular saw. I said "now I'll never be a teen model". he said there was something very wrong with me lol
Honestly I wasn't too excited about watching this video, I'll probably never being doing this, but it popped up, I watched it, and was so amazed as you finished up and actually said wow aloud when you made your first cut with it. Wow.
Millennial Chisel.....lmao. Good one! I use EvapoRust for all of my restorations, which is a hobby of mine. I have a bunch of old chisels I was given and I'm watching this specifically for them. Thanks!
Wow look at that fine tool. The chisel is pretty bad ass too. I sharpen all my own as well. Can i have that one? Lol
what a little of TLC makes the difference!! good job!!
ok, ok, ok, i get it...you got me..im hooked! subscription and a definite like
I dig it.
it's a thing of beauty!
Like the Hawaii T-shirt . And the chisel .
Nice job great to see a tool being brought back to life and put back in to service 🤪😂
Dam thats a good looking chisel
I just cleaned up a very rusted tool by soaking in white vinegar overnight. A much gentler form of acid.
I like the before and after of how the chisel cut
Not knowing this tool's past life it is not easy to say if it was mistreated.
The overall look however days it all that also included its' dull edge.
Güzel bir çalışmaydı 🇹🇷 🙏
I bet it wasn't sitting in bucket, what it is showing is where hardened part of steal ends - carbon is visible od surface as metal is eaten by acid :)
Classic Samurai. Thanks for the video.
Excited for the new videos!
Great video, nice calm music and what a finish on that chisel fantastic!
Beautiful work! 😊👍
Love You Man! Great video
Froglube is very good at preventing rust 👍
Awesome, thank you sharing it with us.
I need some chisels like that.
Pure persistence, hardwork and reward. Great job, attention to detail - as usual. Geat to see you back on UA-cam
How long did it take you to restore the chisel? Wouldve loved to see the reaction of the friend. Great video... love to see how much love n care you put into tools. Plenty of people would've thrown it and bought a new one.
I have just restored a set of unused fifty year old Toledo Swedish Tool bevel chisels and they are absolutely amazing now. Super sharp and ready to go in our woodworking club.
That would have been tragic, as today we're lucj to get galf the quality and workmanship in such tools.
that line that you thought was made by it being stored in a bucket is actually the differential hardness line revealed by your de-rusting liquid
Been a while since I've seen one of your videos, love your stuff bro.
Hi.
Thanks for sharing this great work. Would you please specify the materials you used to protect the metal and the wood.
Thanks
i always use white vinegar ans table salt for all my rust removal but it takes 24 hours for best results.
Awesome video would that same treatment work on files I have like three or four old rusted files
I thought this was a family friendly channel
The way that bade shaved that wood was definitely considered porn
Man... That is the best coment ever. I allmost pissed myself😂🤣😂
😂😂😂
One of my best framing chisels came to me snapped clean off from someone using it as a pry bar
good to see you agian and nice job on the chisel. you should start to upload more easy jobs like this. just to get someting out for os. who is keep waiting for week just to see you agian
Wow. Wish you posted more useful content like this, I miss the old samurai
"i kinda just wanna be sharp and shiny..." omg. lol.
9:18 damn!
Daaaammm dude u got that so sharp awesome job.
Love the ending :)
Nice job bro kaboooooom
That mark is of were the steel got hardend were they heat the steel up and dip it in water or oil
I'm happy somebody said that, it was driving me nuts when he was talking about it.
It could also be where they joined 2 different types of steel. The front of the chisel is could be a hardened high-carbon steel while the tang and transition are a lower-carbon mild steel.
Can you link us to the sharpening stones and stone set up you used?
Idk if anyone can answer this but I also have an old chisel from my great grandfather laying about from Erik Anton Berg brand and the steel is much darker than the chisels I have that are from the 80s. Yours I see also has quite dark steel. What's the reason for this? Anything to do with the carbon content or is it just the polish fading from an old piece of steel? Or perhaps does it have to do with something else?
Love your vids. You’re a good man. Huge fan.
Yet another great job 👌🏼
Wait, I thought u only use chisels to shave hair off your arms..... at least that’s what I’ve used to seeing lol was refreshing to see one being used on wood
a lot of "carpenters" ( i use that word loosely in the UK they really are just guys who nail two pieces of timber together for framing and the odd miter on a saw) tend to have a go at me for sharpening my chisels as you did on the stone , they consider it wrong and the figure eight the only way to sharpen and hone
BUT i have found i get a much better edge more even sharper and longer lasting .as i actually make cabinets and boxes etc i tend to ignore their advice when i want to nail a bit of ply to a bit of wonky pine i may ask them for their advice !!!
that method works well and even a cheap bosh it chisel ( a chisel you take to a site where it make get stolen and your just letting in some hinges or a lock for someone ) gives a better result then their Marple sharpened the figure 8 way sadly none of them carry a stone and dont bother to give it a quick hone before starting !!
that chisel came up so beautifully and its worth spending a bit of time on a vintage tool to give it a new and longer life old saws chisels and planes should be handed down through generations because we really dont make that sort of quality anymore (at least in the UK )
Hot citric acid or even hot instant coffee (5-10x stronger mix than for human consumption) work just as well and are less of a hassle to dispose of. Besides, the acid seems redundant if you are going to use a belt sander and/or wirewheel anyway.
Shooting rust dust all over your shop is not for everyone.
Clean rust off- ScotchBrite wheel. Sharpen chisel - wet honing wheel for a hollow ground edge. Razor's edge.
Can I ask you what type/ kind/brand of wood finish you used for your deck please? Thank you rock!
God bless
Nice one! Something about old rusty tools beeing restored to former glory makes me feel all fuzzy.. 🙃
I just use cheap vinegar ( any sort) for initial rust removal, just soak for a day or so then wire wool.
Seems to work OK for me and costs virtually nothing!
"What are you? A millennial chisel"? LOL!
What was the rust preventer you applied with heat, I would love to put that on my chisels.
It's called frog lube. It was designed to lubricate firearms. I have been using it for years on my guns and woodworking tools. I love that stuff. It was developed by a Navy seal to keep their weapons lubricated during water operations.
@@MrSkyler0121 Thanks so much I got it ordered
i will put this video in my favorit list, very interesting!
Hi Jessie, just wondering if you burned your legs, while wire brushing the acid/rust off the chisel.
Yo. Consider doing some leather restoration on something that may be interesting start with your shop boots
