How Tall Should You Cut The Grass?

  • Some grass types prefer to be cut short. Bentgrass, Perennial Rye, & Bermuda come to mind first because they all look great cut at 1.5 inches or lower. Some other types of grasses however prefer to be cut tall. Grasses like St. Augustine and Turf Type Tall Fescue come to mind immediately because these grasses can be quite healthy when cut to 4-4.5 inches every week.
Despite these generalities all grass types can usually perform well and look good when cut somewhere in the middle at 2.5 inches but what is misunderstood is that your grass height should first and foremost be dictated by your mowing schedule.
A short cut lawn in the .75-1.5 inch range must be cut 2-3 times a week to maintain the health and vigor of the grass plant while tall cut grass can be cut every 7-10 days without cutting too much off the blade each time you mow.
If you don't think you can commit to mowing two times a week then you have to set your mower to a taller setting otherwise your grass will be stressed out all year long.
There is a lot more to choosing a grass height though so watch the video and make sure to see the following videos to learn more about the differences between different grass types:

I mow at 4", and mow 3 times a week mon, wed, fri. My lawn is so thick that I no longer use any herbicide, and have no weeds. Here in eastern colorado fungi isn't a issue. It's KBG and handles the heat just fine at that height. More frequent mowing results in a much thicker lawn. Edging looks absolutely amazing with the grass at that height, and I stick edge every mow. Getting the soil ph just right is a huge deal too. Once that is spot on. You don't have to use as much fertilizer, because it absorbs what it needs much easier. That's true for both micro and macro nutrients.

My one tree has surface roots going about 10’ out. This makes cutting grass a pain. With these crazy gas prices, I don’t want to cut multiple times a week. Thanks for the advice.

Why not go electric if you’re concerned with gas prices?

A really great explanation on a subject I am struggling with . In Ireland I cut my lawn at 2 to 2.5 inches and achieve very good results . Lately I purchased a cylinder mower and done a trial run which did not go too well . The maximum height of cut was 1 .25 inch and it was too short too soon which exposed a lot of the crown of the plant and browning /
Back to the 2.5inch for me .
    Thanks for video .

For my St. Augustine I cut at a height of 3'' and 1/4 however, the grass looks really short after the cut. Is another way of seeing how much I took off is to measure the lawn from the ground up to the grass blade? After it is cut I should have at least 3'' sod.

The measurement is from the ground to the tip of the grass blade

I have no problems in my yard. I cut the yard about 3 to 4 inches. I have neighbors that say I'm not cutting their yards close enough. They don't wanna pay me every week in the spring to cut it. Most service is done with riding mowers, then trimmed with push mowers. Weedeating & bush trimming is optional per customer. I always blow the walks off. Trimming super low creates problems. You get ridges from the riding mower. You can hit gravel & dull your blades. Yard looks like a cow pooped in it. Also grass damage if it doesn't rain for a week or two. What should you do?

Do what your customer wants you to do after you give your opinion on the matter. There is an old lady that only calls me when the grass is about 2 feet high. I don’t cut it too short because God knows what and those weeds. Rocks, metal, dead bodies whatever. So you charge more then a normal cut. Customers happy and I get paid. ALWAYS MAKE THE CUSTOMER HAPPY! Good luck

Most grass types and situations I'd say yes, tall fescue or st Aug closer to 3", and bermuda zoysia 2" high is tops in my book but most grass types will look good at 2.5".
