Brilliant....thanks for uploading this. I haven't seen this footage before. I was at Brands Hatch for this and all the Grand Prixs and brings back fantastic memories.
I wish I lived in Britain in the '80s. Being such a big Ford fan it was one of their great decades in racing. So glad Welsh won one for the home crowd. I see this announcer's car being an MG-TC or Morgan 3-wheeler.
@@barriemorris2829 yes he started in a VW Beetle, then a TR7 V8, then the Chevette and finally a 4x4 Sierra Cosworth. Who was your Uncle and what car did he drive?
Thank you so very much for this great race. I saw these beasts or some of them race less than a mile from my child hood home.Alamaki, Schanche, Niittymaki, Arnesson (won) and many others. I was young but I can remember those cars. What a time to be alive that was.
@@sagbrukje Yes, think of building a winning car in your own carage like Alamaki, the most powerful 911 ever atleast outside Le Mans, tho not sure if there was such a car in there either. And Scanche, he had some money, but not in anywhere in the spectrum like todays cars. It was more of having the right kind of contacts. Kaali Kalle for example got his parts straight from Volvo to win Finlands local rally cross series in rwd class or national rally cross class, Alamaki was in contact with Porsche and Scanche knew the whole performance part industry in Britain, being a designer or atleast visioner and test driver for x-trac etc. might remember the differential/trans company. And on top of all, trans was understood only as being part of an automobile, some other motor vehicle or industrial machine 😅
Really glad they didn't.. That weird bumper that was stuck on european cars, to abide by the rules, made them look absolutely hideous. Especially the Merc's got ruined. In the movie, Coming to America with Eddie Murphy, they used the european version of 560 SEL, or type W126
I'll be honest, I don't much care if it's rallycross, F1, a bunch of snails or a couple of raindrops dribbling down a window, I'll watch any race if Murray Walker is doing the commentary.
Most of the group B Rallycross cars had about 650 hp. The Porsche bi-turbos had 750 bhp what was only just drivable down to the Finn drivers. Gollop's bi-turbo 6R4 could have gone to 800 hp but wouldn’t have been drivable and struggled anyhow to keep the tyres on the rims
It's a actually a bit anoying to see this and know why john welch do so good! Schanke's engineering head bilt that car, ford let him develop the escort at his own will... As long as he built a duplicate for the other "team" driver...John had almost no hand, in the development of the escort... Schanke had his hand on both cars in the night, welch sleeping and come to ready table...
I honestly love how cool that 4WD beetle is !
Just fantastic - thanks so much for sharing. Great memories!! I even had my Quattro resprayed black back in the day having watched Dimi at Brands.

What a show Brands Hatch always delivers!
Now this is what I call a REAL Christmas present. Thank you

I pretty much grew up at Brands and Lydden Hill watching my Dad race in the 80's and 90's, definitely the best era of rallycross.
Warwick Barnes?

Were fun in the schanke era, never been the same after him! And the other drivers back then, now its like everything else... Money or nothing

Thanks for uploading. I used to go to the Swedish races and listening to the Quattros was extatic🏁
This is amazing. I use to have an 1986 Mercury Lynx XR3. I wish we could get those wonderful RS Escorts here in America.

BHP was always the stuff of Legends in Rallycross but drivability mainly ruled out too many horses. Great watch good to see again.
Awesome footage thanks again for spending the time to upload.
Awesome, thanks. So many memories!
Incredible to see the lack of grip when transitioning onto the tarmac.
Yup... weird
wet mud on tarmac is like driving on snow, thats why its impotant to be carefull with mud in the road left by farmers.
more so when riding motor bike.
John Welch driving genius.

Fuckin awesome! Thanks for these. I look forward to more
The Marshall at 12.40 lolz
John Welch near enough fighting the fire marshals off...!
might be to get them from not filling upp the whole car with fire retardent as its hard as hell to clean it off afterwards.
Fabulous!
Dat final tho.
If Arnesson did that to Schanche, then Brands Hatch would disappear from the bomb going off in Schanche's head
wait each car has 900 hp? or all cars combined have 900hp?
Each, the Porche had over 1000 with the boost turned up high enough, so legend has it.

Im not gonna lie, these look like slow cars haha i know theyre not but still
wet and muddy tarmac i assume is the caus for them to not go faster that day.
Yea it was so so slippery they could hardly move .. but look some more races with these cars and the same track drier they go lol t faster !
@@Bogues_88I found funny that they moved quicker on the off-road parts than in the muddy asphalt. Looks greasy as hell.
@@ArtoriusBravo yea slippery hard surface can't get grip but a loose surface the rally tyres can dig thru to get grip
