This guy: ehh ddd is forgetable Double Dealing Character: chracters head literally comes off, only touhou game to invert your controllers, only touhou game to shrink and enlarge your size
I think double dealing character is my favorite of all the games because it feels good to play and the POC reward system is fun to mess around with and it has some really awesome bosses
I think it is one of the beter games for biginning on touhou, the fact you can farm lifes and spellcards help a lot (sorry by the way if i make mistake in my comment, i don't currently speak english (^^')>)
I have a feeling he didn’t take any time to actually appreciate the PC-98 games. They may not be as refined but the music is just as good as the windows games
We live in a society where Desire Drive, Sleeping terorr , Grimoire of Alice, Strawberry crisis and Casket of stars are forgettable but touhou 6 has the best music But the fact that he isn't aware of extra stages being in every game may show a lack of research
Fr, IMO touhou 6 has the most overrated Touhou ost... Remi theme good, Flan theme good, however everywhere I go I always heard their theme which making me go ehh for throughout time. I'd prefer Patchouli theme on EoSD though
"This is the first Touhou game that introduced 'Focus Mode' where you hold down Shift... and you move a lot slower..." LLS would like a word with you, buddy.
Touhou 6 didn't introduce focus mode, I believe. Not exactly, at least. You had the ability to move slow in order to dodge bullets since Touhou 4 (I think), but Touhou 6 started the trend of your shots changing when focusing
Touhou 15 is the absolute No.1 on my list. I actually tell the story line of the TH 15 to my niece as a bedtime story, and she was fascinated. TH15 has THE best storyline out of all the cannon touhou..
I've finished TH15 multiple times and still have no idea what the story was tbh. Other than you're in a dream but actually awake or something and then you go to the moon for some reason. I guess I should pay more attention lol
@@CainRG1 TH 15's storyline was foreshadowed in both TH 7 and TH8. The manga has also paved the road for the story to happen in TH 15. There are multiple Chinese and Japanese youtubers who explained the story very well. I can send the link to you. Basically, TH15 is about the Lunar Capital arc of the story: Junko wanted to avenge his son's death and unleash her wraith onto the lunar Capital. Lunarians have one weakness: they can't be exposed to "filth" (the cycle of life and death). Junko exploited this and portaled the spirits from hell to the surface of moon ( They are the filthiest beings in Lunarian's eyes). Lunarians had to evacuate to the dream's dimension. However, Junko predicted this and prepared an ambush by sending the most powerful character in Touhou universe, Hecatia Lapislazuli to the dream dimension beforehand. If Reimu weren't able to defeat Junko, Lunarian will face massacre and extinction. The story goes way more profound than this. It has lots of references to Buddhism, Shinto, and Chinese Mythology. I highly highly recommend you look into the lore of TH15. Just FYI, Junko has been trying to destroy the Lunar Capital for 4000 years in the Touhou universe. Her origin story can be traced back to the founding of the lunar capital itself. That's another fascinating story.
@@CainRG1 I don't want to spoil too much. The Lunar Capital Arc in the longest and the most well-planned story arc in the touhou universe. I haven't played Touhou games for 4 years, but when I recall the details of the TH15 story, it still gives me goose bumps.
I love how there's so many people on the comments disagreeing with some of the placements here. I also love the placements themselves. There's always people to appreciate each individual Touhou game, and that hits hard. Thank the Lord for ZUN 👏
Touhou 14 so low? I freaking love that game. The story, the originality of characters and bosses, the stages are really fun, the music is a banger, the difficulty is on point, the extra stage is sick... It's actually one of my favorites.
No shit the games ranked low,THE LIST MAKER DIDNT EVEN GET THE STORG RIGHT 😭. Its not about a demon uprising it's about a little inchling being manipulated by an amanojaku into starting an uprising for the inchling species,fUCK. Also primordial beat ~ pristine beat is the fucking best touhou song. FULL STOP
only official content should be valid in a review, he should not cite the translations but i guess he is doing more like a personal review instead of a professional one.
Seeing as there never will be an official translation and ZUN doesn't really care about anything outside the japanese market the fan translations should definitely be included in the ranking if the ranking is done for an english speaking audience.
Ok, so...that means to never mention the story ever? Plus, isn't it the opposite that Touhou is the absolute most fair in this regard? If there is doubt of a translation being wrong, then it will likely be fixed. Official translations often don't care on if they are accurate at all or even good scripts, they just release and are done with it for the most part.
@@lpfan4491 Fan translations are made, well, by fanS. That means there isn't a single universal translation available that everyone will get automatically. Actually there are AT LEAST 2 translations that I know of for every Touhou main game (thcrap main version and static patch). I am sure there are many more available throughout the internet. What that means is that some people may experience the game with a poor translations while others won't. This inconsistency is why such a thing shouldn't be accounted for when reviewing a game. Some people don't even play with the english patch. About that "official translations often don't care..." statement, this is a huge generalization that is also very inaccurate. Maybe the games you know have bad translations but nowadays especially, with the era of patches and updates, most companies will fix any mistake in their dialogues (especially indie ones that blew up like Touhou). Finally, I'm not saying that we should not talk about the story at all when reviewing a game that got translated by fans, I'm saying that the individual translations quirks shouldn't be accounted for. We can still discuss the overarching story without criticising the trnaslator's mistakes.
It's really rare seeing someone rating TH3 over all the PC-98 games, really. Also, the translation of TH9, and actually every TH game is fanmade, thus why it's not complete in some sources However, rating TH15 the first earned my respect - I agree with basically everything you said about it! My favourite ones, personally, are TH8, TH15, and TH12.8 but that's a spinoff - though I think you should try it out, the freeze mechanic in this is awesome ^^
Touhou 14 is actually my favorite Touhou game. 😅 I like the soundtrack, backgrounds, the dodging patterns and the character design the most in that game. My favorite bosses were the seija, shinmyoumaru and sekibanki.
it's not my favourite but I'd certainly disagree with the idea of it being forgettable, Seija flipping the screen and Shinmyoumaru's Mallet "You Grow Bigger" (which despite appearances actually makes the bullet hitboxes bigger, not your own) certainly stick in my head above most over gimmiks and spell cards. it kind of seems odd, it feels like many older characters are absent from modern official games while many newer characters are absent from fan game but 14 was just caught in the middle and doesn't get much love in official or fanworks.
@@Eclipsed_Embers it's a shame that Touhou 14 doesn't get much representation in fan works because Seija could be an interesting character to play as or fight against, especially in 3d. Maybe it doesn't get much attention because it is one of the easiest games from the series. I like it because of the interesting boss patterns, boss designs and music though.
To clarify I don't have anything against that. I just found it hilarious since bad apple is an iconic music and it's mostly what Lotus land story is known for.
I would recommend people play Touhou 1 for one soul reason. It is the most unique game I have ever played. I have yet to see another Breakout style game that also has bosses and bullets to dodge. Yeah, the collision is very janky, and the ball being able to kill you is yet another thing to worry about. However, if rougher edges were ironed out and the bomb didn't cause a seizure when using it, I think it could be a very fun experience.
"so so music" argument... 😭 HRtP songs are awesome for me : strongs and emotionals. Eternal Shrine Maiden, the most powerful music to introduce a main character. Not joy, not happy, not entousiastic, pure melancholia. For ETERNITY.
Yeah, the poor programming(Both in designchoices and the bugs everywhere) is really killing Touhou 1 in many ways. The good part is that the game is fully decomped already, so it will only be a matter of time until a fully fixed version appears.
@@FCTouhou ua-cam.com/video/OPx4o8tI8fM/v-deo.html This is the reason why I said it's easier on Lunatic. There aren't much bullets for you to graze on lower difficulty at the beginning.
Touhou 18 Is (For My Oppinion ) the best game i have played yet the ost are great the ability card system is absolutely Great i wish the next game would be a touhou 18 fighting game
I'd say touhou 10 is one of the easier ones actually The Bombs are also kinda OP, also, you definitely should use the bombs in the stage part, and if you are at risk of dying, thats better than low power right? also in Imperishable night there are 4 teams, not 3 also p.s. all of them have an extra stage
ive been pretty tunnel vision about 10 11 and 1 2 being the best until now. I had this WEIRD assumption that the newer games werent as good...I just have a hard time imagining how it can get better than nuclear fusion...
Complaints DDC: Worst Windows game? It's by far the best one, it has really enjoyable patterns and good backgrounds, good story, the best ost of all, etc. Especially with themes as awesome as Little princess or Primordial beat, thought it's also one of the hardest TD: It's good, you're just saying it's easy because you're playing easy, but in the hardest difficulty the amount of resources turns it into one of the hardest, themes get better the more you hear them, the first 2 Stages aren't that good, but the rest are awesome, especially omiwa Legend and Futatsuiwa from sado MoF: It's great, awesome Stages and themes, but also the easiest, and by far IN: It's another of the best games of all, a lot of good mechanics, good patterns, awesome themes, and very inmersive EoSD: "one of the best in the series"? Bruuuuuuuuuuh, it's the worst at least for windows era, not only being pure rng luckshit and having imput lag, also the themes aren't even that good when compared to the other games, i'd actually say the only really good theme is girl's secret room, also being a pretty boring game in the comparision to the others, and doesn't even have an unique mechanic to make it different to the others While i also don't like UFO too much, but it's not really bad, it's just something i dislike for my personal experience... Nah nvm Fuck UFO, very unenjoyable, annoying and having a terrible "too much effort for a terrible reward"
I don't understand the EoSD love in the community. I'd guess nostalgia, but very few people played at that time. It feels very dated, the rng is irritating, and on a subjective level, I think its music and dialogue/story are simply outclassed in all other windows titles
Always great to see people reviewing Touhou games. However, I disagree with the list, and my main criticism I have with this review is that I don’t think you used the same criteria to rank each game, which made you rate certain games higher than you would have with a more clear cut criteria. Here are some examples: 1) You took into consideration the story of some of the games, but when a game didn’t have a fan translation, you disregarded the story aspect entirely. It would have made more sense to not include story in the rating for every game you rated. 2) Some of the gameplay you showed is in easy mode, and some of it is in normal mode. This makes me think you may have ranked some games based mainly on your experience in easy mode, whereas others based on normal mode. This seems most evident with Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, where you said it was the most balanced game out of the series even though I only saw easy mode gameplay. It would have made more sense to be more consistent in the gameplay you showed. All in all, hope you have a good time with the series, and it’s nice to see a new perspective on each game. I just don’t think that this review holds up from an objective standpoint, since like I said before, the criteria used to measure each game seems inconsistent.
if you like Touhou and want an interesting and huge shmup, I recommend the Void Rains Upon Her Heart. look it up, it's also made by one guy at has almost 100 bosses (all grouped within i think 7 unique categories) and is constantly being updated with new events, unlocks, bosses, etc. highly recommend
@@vyllix8546 then an obvious question rises - why making this video in the first place then if the ranking is from a casual perspective? This is Touhou we're talking about after all. That's not the only problem with the video, the ranking itself feels overly biased and far from objective. Some trivia he mentioned is just flat out wrong. God forbid that any Touhou newcomer would watch this video.
15 is all the way, the hardest touhou in existence, you played it on easy so you think it's not the hardest, but the people who played it on normal or higher say otherwise.
Who is this guy? Plays Ten desire on Easy "Yeah this one is easy guys". Plays with stretched graphics. "Touhou 7 is not fully translated" wdym? I played the game in 2009 and it was already fully translated what are you smoking
In case you haven't figure it out yet, Touhou 18 is supposed to be rogue-like. So you missed some really cool items and power ups. It was one of, if not, the best Touhou game in terms of replayability imo.
I would have put SA higher, to me it's one of the best given the intense difficulty, great music and cool story and characters. But either way cool video, enjoyed hearing your takes
@@NeoNickz I never said it was hard, i played only on normal and almost captured it without bombs when i beaten her for the first time, touhou 10th high placement was weird for me because it's likely the easiest touhou game.
Ranking Touhou games is hard and divisive af. Personally I Think TD deserves more recognition, yes it's a lesser UFO but still it has a great soundtrack, nice characters and difficulty depends if you risk to get more spirits. I wouldn't put HSFS so high its music is not so memorable for me ( except for two of them) i find it more in the meme able side because of tanned Cirno, wheelchair and stand up Okina. SA should be way higher, it's hard but in a good sense pretty satisfying every step you take, any track is my personal top and its characters, man it's a cooler take on EOSD. It is no coincidense that it was the main Touhou inspiration for Undertale.
>UM is one of the most optimized games? Optimized in what? This game is broken in term of gameplay and balance The focus mode was first introduced in Touhou 4 btw
Optimized as in optimization like compatibility for the pc. There was no comparability issues. No issues running on a modern pc with modern resolutions supported. Not having to run in comparability mode or in a small resolution like other touhou games. It has nothing to do with the gameplay or balance
@@TotallyTubularJonathan Then yes, I agree. It suprised me that he put a lot of effort into this. Being able to play borderless is a blessing. Also the new config for controlls are also very great
@@inabaraisin4314 that was the most fun about this game (people already mod it into the game already) And its not what I meant, I was talking about the general card and shop system
interesting overall I personally agree with Ten Desires being the easiest in terms of difficulty, but in exchange it has the least beginnerfriendly resource system (maybe after 11) because it is very hard to get extends from it. Mountain Of Faith is not that hard...aside of the final boss which I rank as second hardest after 15's. Otherwise the stages and bosses are fair as the resource system. I am kinda shocked to hear from a mostly easy mode player that LoLK isn't too hard. This is known as being the hardest game in the whole series for a newcomer (boss five says everything), including the most unbalanced in terms of difficulty. Some spells are easier on hard / lunatic than on easy / normal. Though said it's also my favorite game from the series for having my favorite characters and soundtrack.
I had the same memories, but then when I got back to Touhou it took a single attempt to get past Clownpiece, yet I was stuck for three days with a flipped screen, lol
The only reason I have a problem with you playing on easy is because you're missing quite a bit imo(but that can be said on all difficulties other then Lunatic which is as hard as enjoying hell) and most people play on Normal at the start Not sure if it's connected, but I highly disagree with your tier list BTW, focusing was introduced in Touhou 4 or 3 but they didn't effect your shot, just speed
I got into the series about 11 months ago. I’ve now played every game. I have 1CCed a few. My primary focus has been EoSD and getting that lunatic 1CC. This is the weirdest top 10 list I’ve seen. I originally commented on this video when I had only played MoF, my first 2hu, but since then I think SA is probably the best, although EoSD is my 1st love.
Uuuh, what? The games are not free to download, unless you pirate them. Saying they're free for download and providing instructions on where to download them is basically advocating for piracy. I get it, we all pirate touhou games, since they don't have official translations. However, you shouldn't tell your audience it's free. You should tell them they're available on Steam (most of them), but they're in Japanese. If they want to support ZUN then they can buy the games there, and pirate the translated versions.
>13) DDC - worst windows game *Nods* Stage 4 is especially a pure bs. Background is just clouds, enemies are the same through entire stage with basically the same attacks. >12) Phantasomogira I'd put UFO as worse. I'm not sure if UFO is worse than DDC, but UFO is definitely one of the worst games. >11) Ten desires RRREEE. It's one of the best games. Probably top 5. >10) Subterranian Was UFO so bad you forgot it exists? "Hardest in the series" is definitely not it, but LoLK (it was specifically designed for this, have fun with RNG). >9) MOF this is accidentally easiest game thanks to broken Marisa at lvl3. >8) PCB I have no idea how any sane man can rank UFO over PCB. And I say that as not a fan of PCB. >7) IN HOW? IN is regarded as one of the best games thanks to built-in spell practice, configurable lives, generous deathbombing and music. How it's being worse than UFO? And I say this as fan of IN. >6) UM Game has English translation through thcrap now. >5) EOSD you definitely shouldn't start with this one. It's hard comparing to IN. Its age shows as you need to patch it to run at normal frame rate. Autocollect doesn't even activate unless you have shot level 4. >4) WB How it's below UFO? WB fixed everything which was wrong in UFO. >3) HSOFS How it's worse than UFO? >2) UFO I almost had a heart attock thinking that OP will post UFO as the best touhou game. It's one of the worst games. Too few UFOs. And if UFO changed color right before you pick it up, too bad for you. 1) LoLK I'd put it in top 3, behind IN, simply because Junko pixel perfect RNG. It's not "not too hard". It was specifically designed to be hard as IWKTG was popular, it's the most difficult game in the series (thanks to Junko). It's not "ONE" of the most difficult. It's "THE" most difficult. It's so difficult, it gives you endless continues and checkpoints. 0) Wait, does author has no idea how auto collect works? In every game he collected items by flewing over them. That explains EoSD a little.
As for PC-98 games, I think he rated it unfairly because: 1. It's completely different era, with completely different characters. To say the writing is nothing to write about is just as valuable as saying that the comic that you made in the past has mediocre writing. ZUN was a young lad at a time, so of course it has a lot of Shojo-esque style of writing. It's better noted that yes, PC-98 isn't a great introduction of the series, but it's better played by someone who's into vintage style and by ones who are curious about ZUN's older works. 2. Since it's PC-98, there are of course limitations, and music is also affected by those said limitations, so I don't really understand why he thinks it's so-so, but if he truly does think that and not because of hardware limitations, he is right to have his own opinion. Here's my commentary on his ratings: 1. Highly Responsive to Prayers I actually quite agree that this game isn't much to talk about, but again, it's the first game and even by PC-98 canon it feels weird. Music to me felt alright, but very grotesque. Fitting because this game IS grotesque, especially at Sariel's bossfight, hands reaching to the sky, various bubbles showing previous locations including unused "title screen" and theme being ominous as heck? It's entirely different from the rest of the batch, so it should be taken as it's own thing. 2. Lotus Land Story I got angery, but I'll calm down for this one. It boggles me how this game is rated below SoEW is beyond me, especially that I myself suck at those games hard, more than him. This game introduced many features that would become staple in touhou series and imo it has so much content (in my eyes at least) and felt very unique in a good way (unlike HRtP). Also using other motifs than Eastern Wonderland is guaranteed plus from me. Somehow, to me personally it feels much more memorable than SoEW and MS, both music wise and character wise 3. Story of Eastern Wonderland I genuinely don't know what in a world could happen for it to be ranked above LLS, is it because it's short? While SoEW is a more proper Touhou, it's much more basic. From music only 3rd stage, 4th stage theme and Complete Darkness feel memorable (while LLS had much more bangers). I want to write at least something positive, but this game is also a stepping stone for Touhou games so I can't really say much. 4. Mystic Square Okay that's actually pretty fair, it's one of more polished games out there from PC-98 era, so I can't argue with that. But imo characters felt even more forgettable, and only ones I could recall is Alice and Shinki (maybe even Mai) and music doesn't feel much to write home about, though it's very solid 5. Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream I was genuinely surprised to see it rank so high, despite being a phantasmagoria. While personally I think it's a fun game with diverse cast of characters, from technical point, I would rank it on third place. Every piece is a banger though
Most of it was like "I like the plot and music" "I didn't like the plot/music" Me: I skip the plot and wait for "memories of phantasm". I want to play not read. Music it's depend on the person I guess, but I don't think you can say touhou 4 music(bad apple) is not memorable
MoF is unironically the most refined game of the windows era in terms of aesthetic cohesion. Unbelievable atmospheric soundtrack. Stage 4 literally feels like you've just been hit with a rush of fresh water.
I’m sorry, how is the music in four forgettable? The single most popular song from the series originates with this game. Inanimate dream and sleeping terror are two of the best touhou soundtracks with several amazing derivative works.
How can you put SoEW *above* LLS? SoEW has stiff controls, no focus mode and activating bombs has a ridiculous delay that makes it more of a guessing game as of to when you should use them. LLS is at least solid in terms of mechanics.
I disagree with most points but that’s fine Anyway here’s my personal worst to best 1. Touhou 2 It’s fine, I just didn’t really have fun with it It does have some of my favourite boss designs of pc-98 Touhou 2. Touhou 13 The only game I haven’t finished on normal It starves you of lives and bombs and I just can’t do it. It’s not no. 1 because I like the soundtrack 3. Touhou 14 I like the mechanic since it’s really satisfying to just run up to the Collection line and just see my reward I also like the soundtrack, and the boss designs are pretty cool (in my opinion) 4. Touhou 3 This used to be high on my list until I played Touhou 9 and I bumped it down to 4th place. It’s not a bad game, I enjoyed it but I prefer Touhou 9 over it 5. Touhou 1 I love this game but the difficulty ceiling is way too high lol The colouring choices are pretty whack but I go back to it every once in a while 6. Touhou 5 Cool game, soundtrack is cool, it’s lower than Touhou 4 because I like its extra stage better 7. Touhou 4 Favourite pc-98 Touhou game, love the extra stage and is one of my top soundtracks to listen to 8. Touhou 7 A good starting point with a beginner friendly mechanic but not one of my top favourites 9. Touhou 9 This is basically a more fun version of Touhou 3 10. Touhou 6 The most popular but not one of my top favourites. The fact that it’s a modern Touhou game where I can’t see the hit box makes the game easier for me and is the first Touhou game I managed to beat on lunatic 11. Touhou 12 The ufo mechanic is fun but can be very frustrating. Love the soundtrack though 12. Touhou 11 It is pretty hard but I like the Marisa patchouli shot type soooooo- 13. Touhou 18 I love the mechanic, Andi love the designs I just need the d-pad to work and I’m all good 14. Touhou 17 My second Touhou game. I love the music and the mechanic is basically ufo but better 15. Touhou 8 So much fun. I am a completionist and when I found out you can finish the game with all characters individually and not pairs, SIGN ME UP! 16. Touhou 10 I love this game, didn’t expect it to be high on my list when I played it but MAN the stage themes in this game. The stage themes man... so good... 17. Touhou 16 My first Touhou game so I’m a bit biased lol. Also my first extra stage clear ^^ 18. Touhou 15 Love the music, love the mechanic, love the extra stage, I love the cast That’s all lol I wanted to get a bit more in depth but I tried
legacy of lunatic kingdom has the worst difficulty scaling in the entire series, an awful final boss, an incredibly boring resource system, and really stupid rng patterns. i do not recommend it to any newcomers. i play on hard and lunatic tho so i prolly had a different experience compared to the video uploader 🤷♀️ UFO is a great top pick tho 👍
I can't find the source anymore, but wasn't the game originally planned to be even more Kaizo-like until Zun decided that that's stupid and the game needs some sort of difficulty scaling? It's funny to think about.
Mountain of faith is actually one of the easiest touhou games.... on normal. It is acknowledged it has some weird shenanigans on easy mode though. Some of the difficulty is trickery too. Like when you're at full power, you shoot like 30x more bullets than when you're at 1.0 power, but 1.0 power is still like.. h alf power despite its appearance (but less spread). So you should NOT feel bad about bombing liberally in MoF if you need to. IIRC years ago some guy made a demonstration of how easy MoF was on normal by basically bombing every 5 seconds during a boss or any hard part, often before any bullets reaches the player's approximate range.
"IIRC years ago some guy made a demonstration of how easy MoF was on normal by basically bombing every 5 seconds..." Holy crap. I want to see that ! Would you happen to still have the link ?
@@YoannBB god it was years ago. I dont even know if it was a youtube video or a replay file. I just remember seeing it via MotK forums from that guy who lives in Winnipeg whose username I forgot.
@@YoannBB pretty sure you are thinking of Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom on Lunatic mode with Sanae, but for each chapter, the player had to use either a bomb or a death. I don’t know if it’s possible to bomb every 5 seconds in mountain of faith, even though it is very bomb spammy.
Less a series than a single game, but I highly recommend Hellsinker. It's easily one of my favorite shmups. And if you like that fast-paced shit, Akashicverse is also amazing. CAVE games would probably be way too much for you, as would Ikaruga or those other really old shmups. Crimzon Clover World Ignition is also a fantastic more modern shmup that isn't too gimmicky.
seeing touhou 8 come up and i realize ufo ans everything past lolk hasnt come up yet. a little surreal to see. usually people put all the old games higher than the new ones
Saying Touhou music is forgettable is a crime in Touhou Community lol, even from the CD and Albums too will be very appreciated in Touhou Community And saying Bad Apple!! And Cute Devil ~ Innocence forgettable it just hurt....
I would argue that the PC-98 games are the best games, outside of the phantasmagoria games, which are absolutely amazing (even if they are rather terrifying to play).
This is way too biased with the translations and the facts are wrong sometimes Touhou 15 is literally the hardest of the series it’s probably easy for him because of the infinite continues. Literally touhou 15 is a nightmare
13:29 tip for MoF, if you're trying to 1cc spam your bombs you just get so many bombs it's so ez and at power 5 you do the same damage as power 4(Btw don't use touhou lovers use moriya shrine to download touhou games)
Man, I've already beaten 8 Extra Stages, 1cc'd normal for most Touhous and a few 1cc hard mode, and I STILL CAN'T BEAT TOUHOU 15 It hurts to see LoLK get called "Not too hard" Also Touhou 18 should get the most replayable Touhou award LMAO I like LoLK but I highly disagree on some points, I would never recommend such a hard game that barely teaches the player something and forces them to get good to get lives, same with Touhou 12, I'd rather recommend Touhou 8 since it's one of the easiest Touhou, with the most content and (in my opinion) the best music
Exactly bro, the bonus system is quite literally one of the most unique things ZUN has ever done(besides the cards, and the ufo/beast systen). And the game does NOT play around on harder difficulties
@@notlol1 You know what games fans do forget? TD and HSiFS. The most memorable part of TD are the memes of the characters and Kogasa. As for HSiFS, Tanned Cirno. Nobody remembers Satono or Mai.
Also, when people play TH games for a video, they never play the side-games. Touhou 10.5 is quite possibly the best in the series. It has the best ost and who hates Tenshi or Iku?
@@f.u.m.o.5669 TD, i'd say it gets more interesting on lunatic and stuff plus the amount of spirit-milking you can do to bosses is insane. HSiFS is a game that ppl will actually love when they spend more time and credits on it. Also GFW/DS are goated games
this is why its arbitrary to rank the touhou games,,, Honestly i couldnt rank them even if i tried? double dealing character being the weakest just i cant really accept? i really like the characters from that game, and the music being weak is like saying that pizza is bad. yeah, this is opinion i get it but i dont think its fair to rank touhou like this. certain entries are weaker, but ranking them doesnt work.
I have absolutely no clue why ddc is ranked that low. Characters? Pretty damn memorable. Gameplay? Considered to be some of the most fun in the series. MUSIC? I personally think that ddc has the most consistently good ost in all of touhou. Sometimes in a touhou game theres a couple of “eh” songs in between all of the good stuff, but ddc is just solid song after solid song. IT IS A TOP 3 GAME i really like ddc lol
I... I didn't at all understand the praise on playable characters/replayability in TH15, it has some of the least variety in terms of that. And also some of the worst balance probably. I'm not really sure what to say on the rest of the video honestly. I'm glad this kind of video exists, but I kind of wouldn't know where to start with my issues. But I'm glad you made it nonetheless.
@@niichigary8609 It's still a game ZUN created and a bullet hell by his definition. I also agree that's it's not a main game. If we go only by this definition touhou 9.5 and 12.5 and 14.3 also only created by ZUN and a bullet hell .
How on EARTH can Touhou 4 be so low??? It introduced the focus mechanic. Just for that it's one of if not THE best PC-98 Touhou game. Also, it's funny that you say LLS has no memorable music, because Bad Apple originates from that game lmfao
The only bad touhou system for me is Touhou 10-11 it's so hard to enjoy it, yes we have abundance amount of bomb but using one will make use weaker overtime, i just hate the ideas that your powers are the bomb also no master spark are straight up illegal
This guy: ehh ddd is forgetable
Double Dealing Character: chracters head literally comes off, only touhou game to invert your controllers, only touhou game to shrink and enlarge your size
The music is quite in the higher end of Touhou, and even turns the hakkero into a flamer, but eh, people is free to have their own opinions
When he ranked it low, I wanted to punch a child.
Also Shinmyoumaru. God her theme I feel so bad for her :(
did this man unironically call Bad Apple, Casket of Star, Maiden's Capriccio, Break the Sabbath, Alice Maestra and Sleeping Terror forgettable
I have a feeling he didn’t take any time to actually appreciate the PC-98 games. They may not be as refined but the music is just as good as the windows games
he actually said that "it had music I couldn't recall at all"
Giving him the benefit of the doubt, he binged the whole "main" series and he probably binged the pc-95 ones faster to get to the windows ones
I mean even Desire Drive got called forgettable lmao
i was going to bring up perdition crisis but, uh... i guess the fact you didn't mention it kinda says something
We live in a society where Desire Drive, Sleeping terorr , Grimoire of Alice, Strawberry crisis and Casket of stars are forgettable but touhou 6 has the best music
But the fact that he isn't aware of extra stages being in every game may show a lack of research
Fr, IMO touhou 6 has the most overrated Touhou ost...
Remi theme good, Flan theme good, however everywhere I go I always heard their theme which making me go ehh for throughout time. I'd prefer Patchouli theme on EoSD though
"Touhou 6 even has this unlockable scenario!"
How do we tell him
"This is the first Touhou game that introduced 'Focus Mode' where you hold down Shift... and you move a lot slower..."
LLS would like a word with you, buddy.
This is probably the first time I hear a positive comment about the UFO mechanic, people's opinions sure are interesting to hear
That's true. But i really like Touhou 8 and 11 story too. But Touhou 15 story is sick.
Touhou 17 has my fave story simply for the open ended complexity.
Touhou 14 have the best OST of the franchise imo
No shit the games ranked low,THE LIST MAKER DIDNT EVEN GET THE STORG RIGHT 😭. Its not about a demon uprising it's about a little inchling being manipulated by an amanojaku into starting an uprising for the inchling species,fUCK. Also primordial beat ~ pristine beat is the fucking best touhou song. FULL STOP
The translations are made by the fans. It's unfair to include them in the ranking.
only official content should be valid in a review, he should not cite the translations but i guess he is doing more like a personal review instead of a professional one.
@@Ezherial Who is "most companies"?
It's really rare seeing someone rating TH3 over all the PC-98 games, really. Also, the translation of TH9, and actually every TH game is fanmade, thus why it's not complete in some sources
However, rating TH15 the first earned my respect - I agree with basically everything you said about it!
My favourite ones, personally, are TH8, TH15, and TH12.8 but that's a spinoff - though I think you should try it out, the freeze mechanic in this is awesome ^^

Actually Touhou 4 introduced the focus mode 😅
The 5th game has the focus mode as well. You just can't see your hit point in those tough.
@sunfloweryokai indeed! One of the most popular Touhou songs was introduced here as well!
This video is forgettable
Touhou 14 is actually my favorite Touhou game. 😅
I like the soundtrack, backgrounds, the dodging patterns and the character design the most in that game. My favorite bosses were the seija, shinmyoumaru and sekibanki.
*Sad Raiko noises*
it's not my favourite but I'd certainly disagree with the idea of it being forgettable, Seija flipping the screen and Shinmyoumaru's Mallet "You Grow Bigger" (which despite appearances actually makes the bullet hitboxes bigger, not your own) certainly stick in my head above most over gimmiks and spell cards.
it kind of seems odd, it feels like many older characters are absent from modern official games while many newer characters are absent from fan game but 14 was just caught in the middle and doesn't get much love in official or fanworks.
AYO MY PEOPLE
Touhou 14 is my first touhou ... And my fave.
You just said that the game with the original bad apple didn't have any memorable soundtrack 😂😂
HRtP songs are awesome for me : strongs and emotionals.

When he said that touhou 15 is not that hard it is clear he was playing on easy mode. Lolk is one of the the hardest game lol

Complaints
DDC: Worst Windows game? It's by far the best one, it has really enjoyable patterns and good backgrounds, good story, the best ost of all, etc. Especially with themes as awesome as Little princess or Primordial beat, thought it's also one of the hardest
TD: It's good, you're just saying it's easy because you're playing easy, but in the hardest difficulty the amount of resources turns it into one of the hardest, themes get better the more you hear them, the first 2 Stages aren't that good, but the rest are awesome, especially omiwa Legend and Futatsuiwa from sado
MoF: It's great, awesome Stages and themes, but also the easiest, and by far
IN: It's another of the best games of all, a lot of good mechanics, good patterns, awesome themes, and very inmersive
EoSD: "one of the best in the series"? Bruuuuuuuuuuh, it's the worst at least for windows era, not only being pure rng luckshit and having imput lag, also the themes aren't even that good when compared to the other games, i'd actually say the only really good theme is girl's secret room, also being a pretty boring game in the comparision to the others, and doesn't even have an unique mechanic to make it different to the others
While i also don't like UFO too much, but it's not really bad, it's just something i dislike for my personal experience...

Here are some examples:
1) You took into consideration the story of some of the games, but when a game didn’t have a fan translation, you disregarded the story aspect entirely.

Optimized in what? This game is broken in term of gameplay and balance
The focus mode was first introduced in Touhou 4 btw
Optimized as in optimization like compatibility for the pc. There was no comparability issues. No issues running on a modern pc with modern resolutions supported. Not having to run in comparability mode or in a small resolution like other touhou games. It has nothing to do with the gameplay or balance

I personally agree with Ten Desires being the easiest in terms of difficulty, but in exchange it has the least beginnerfriendly resource system (maybe after 11) because it is very hard to get extends from it.

>6) UM

>2) UFO
I almost had a heart attock thinking that OP will post UFO as the best touhou game.
It's one of the worst games. Too few UFOs. And if UFO changed color right before you pick it up, too bad for you.
1) LoLK
I'd put it in top 3, behind IN, simply because Junko pixel perfect RNG.
As for PC-98 games, I think he rated it unfairly because:
Here's my commentary on his ratings:
1. Highly Responsive to Prayers
I actually quite agree that this game isn't much to talk about, but again, it's the first game and even by PC-98 canon it feels weird.
2. Lotus Land Story
I got angery, but I'll calm down for this one. Somehow, to me personally it feels much more memorable than SoEW and MS, both music wise and character wise
3. Story of Eastern Wonderland
I genuinely don't know what in a world could happen for it to be ranked above LLS, is it because it's short? While SoEW is a more proper Touhou, it's much more basic. From music only 3rd stage, 4th stage theme and Complete Darkness feel memorable (while LLS had much more bangers). I want to write at least something positive, but this game is also a stepping stone for Touhou games so I can't really say much.
4. Mystic Square
Okay that's actually pretty fair, it's one of more polished games out there from PC-98 era, so I can't argue with that. But imo characters felt even more forgettable, and only ones I could recall is Alice and Shinki (maybe even Mai) and music doesn't feel much to write home about, though it's very solid
5. Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream
I was genuinely surprised to see it rank so high, despite being a phantasmagoria. While personally I think it's a fun game with diverse cast of characters, from technical point, I would rank it on third place. Every piece is a banger though
Most of it was like "I like the plot and music"
"I didn't like the plot/music"
Me: I skip the plot and wait for "memories of phantasm". I want to play not read.
Music it's depend on the person I guess, but I don't think you can say touhou 4 music(bad apple) is not memorable

Seriously, people usually rank those games by gameplay, if you want to talk about story, then make separate tier list of incidents lmao
someone rly doesn't like UFO
DDC IS GREAT AND IT'S ONE OF ZUN'S BEST GAMES. FIGHT ME.
MoF is unironically the most refined game of the windows era in terms of aesthetic cohesion. Unbelievable atmospheric soundtrack. Stage 4 literally feels like you've just been hit with a rush of fresh water.
Man, touhou 7 and 10 are my favorites (touhou 16 also my beloved)
I’m sorry, how is the music in four forgettable? The single most popular song from the series originates with this game. Inanimate dream and sleeping terror are two of the best touhou soundtracks with several amazing derivative works.
oh, you're gonna have such a different ranking once you start getting 1ccs
do you know where to download the Touhou games? Cause the site provided in this video is pretty much dead.
@@mihajlonikolic3973 if you're open to torrenting, moriya shrine is a helpful website
How can you put SoEW *above* LLS? SoEW has stiff controls, no focus mode and activating bombs has a ridiculous delay that makes it more of a guessing game as of to when you should use them. LLS is at least solid in terms of mechanics.
I disagree with most points but that’s fine
Anyway here’s my personal worst to best
1. Touhou 2
It’s fine, I just didn’t really have fun with it
It does have some of my favourite boss designs of pc-98 Touhou
2. Touhou 13
The only game I haven’t finished on normal
It starves you of lives and bombs and I just can’t do it. It’s not no. 1 because I like the soundtrack
3. Touhou 14
I like the mechanic since it’s really satisfying to just run up to the Collection line and just see my reward
I also like the soundtrack, and the boss designs are pretty cool (in my opinion)
4. Touhou 3
This used to be high on my list until I played Touhou 9 and I bumped it down to 4th place. It’s not a bad game, I enjoyed it but I prefer Touhou 9 over it
5. Touhou 1
I love this game but the difficulty ceiling is way too high lol
The colouring choices are pretty whack but I go back to it every once in a while
6. Touhou 5
Cool game, soundtrack is cool, it’s lower than Touhou 4 because I like its extra stage better
7. Touhou 4
Favourite pc-98 Touhou game, love the extra stage and is one of my top soundtracks to listen to
8. Touhou 7
A good starting point with a beginner friendly mechanic but not one of my top favourites
9. Touhou 9
This is basically a more fun version of Touhou 3
10. Touhou 6
The most popular but not one of my top favourites. The fact that it’s a modern Touhou game where I can’t see the hit box makes the game easier for me and is the first Touhou game I managed to beat on lunatic
11. Touhou 12
The ufo mechanic is fun but can be very frustrating. Love the soundtrack though
12. Touhou 11
It is pretty hard but I like the Marisa patchouli shot type soooooo-
13. Touhou 18
I love the mechanic, Andi love the designs
I just need the d-pad to work and I’m all good
14. Touhou 17
My second Touhou game. I love the music and the mechanic is basically ufo but better
15. Touhou 8
So much fun. I am a completionist and when I found out you can finish the game with all characters individually and not pairs, SIGN ME UP!
16. Touhou 10
I love this game, didn’t expect it to be high on my list when I played it but MAN the stage themes in this game. The stage themes man... so good...
17. Touhou 16
My first Touhou game so I’m a bit biased lol. Also my first extra stage clear ^^
18. Touhou 15
Love the music, love the mechanic, love the extra stage, I love the cast
That’s all lol
I wanted to get a bit more in depth but I tried
These "Other Things" are Ability Cards. Passive, Active, and Equipment.
legacy of lunatic kingdom has the worst difficulty scaling in the entire series, an awful final boss, an incredibly boring resource system, and really stupid rng patterns. i do not recommend it to any newcomers. i play on hard and lunatic tho so i prolly had a different experience compared to the video uploader 🤷♀️
UFO is a great top pick tho 👍
I like the difficulty, it's definitely very hard but it gives me a challenge and I somehow find it fun.
I hate ufo
Junko's fight was fun as hell tho. Especially on Lunatic
I can't find the source anymore, but wasn't the game originally planned to be even more Kaizo-like until Zun decided that that's stupid and the game needs some sort of difficulty scaling? It's funny to think about.
@@1andonlycarloPOV: You only play on Pointdevice Mode
"IIRC years ago some guy made a demonstration of how easy MoF was on normal by basically bombing every 5 seconds..."
Holy crap. I want to see that ! Would you happen to still have the link ?
@@YoannBB god it was years ago. I dont even know if it was a youtube video or a replay file. I just remember seeing it via MotK forums from that guy who lives in Winnipeg whose username I forgot.
@@Ghalion666 Thanks for all the info. I'll try to find it !
@@YoannBB pretty sure you are thinking of Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom on Lunatic mode with Sanae, but for each chapter, the player had to use either a bomb or a death. I don’t know if it’s possible to bomb every 5 seconds in mountain of faith, even though it is very bomb spammy.
this wrong ass list
Less a series than a single game, but I highly recommend Hellsinker. It's easily one of my favorite shmups. And if you like that fast-paced shit, Akashicverse is also amazing. CAVE games would probably be way too much for you, as would Ikaruga or those other really old shmups. Crimzon Clover World Ignition is also a fantastic more modern shmup that isn't too gimmicky.
seeing touhou 8 come up and i realize ufo ans everything past lolk hasnt come up yet. a little surreal to see. usually people put all the old games higher than the new ones
Saying Touhou music is forgettable is a crime in Touhou Community lol, even from the CD and Albums too will be very appreciated in Touhou Community
And saying Bad Apple!! And Cute Devil ~ Innocence forgettable it just hurt....
I would argue that the PC-98 games are the best games, outside of the phantasmagoria games, which are absolutely amazing (even if they are rather terrifying to play).
You wanna try a shmup like Battle Garegga or Darius?
This is way too biased with the translations and the facts are wrong sometimes
Touhou 15 is literally the hardest of the series it’s probably easy for him because of the infinite continues.
Literally touhou 15 is a nightmare
You really should do a better research next time but still a nice video
Touhou 4 had Bad Apple!!, how can you say it has so-so music?
Touhou 15 ? The most balanced ? Its one of the if not the harder-
13:29 tip for MoF, if you're trying to 1cc spam your bombs you just get so many bombs it's so ez and at power 5 you do the same damage as power 4(Btw don't use touhou lovers use moriya shrine to download touhou games)
Or buy them if you can afford it, every game after (and including) mountain of faith is now released on steam.
Man, I've already beaten 8 Extra Stages, 1cc'd normal for most Touhous and a few 1cc hard mode, and I STILL CAN'T BEAT TOUHOU 15
It hurts to see LoLK get called "Not too hard"
Also Touhou 18 should get the most replayable Touhou award LMAO
I like LoLK but I highly disagree on some points, I would never recommend such a hard game that barely teaches the player something and forces them to get good to get lives, same with Touhou 12, I'd rather recommend Touhou 8 since it's one of the easiest Touhou, with the most content and (in my opinion) the best music
Where was Touhou 11?
Touhou 14 has the best song in all of Touhou. Kobito of the Shining Needle
Am I the only person wondering where did Touhou 11 go?
He ranked TH14 low and called forgettable. Unforgivable.
The ending theme is the best theme (In my opinion) in the series.
I think most of this is good except for HSIFS being rated so highly.
“Lotus Land Story has forgettable music.”
Did you seriously call BAD-F###ING-APPLE forgettable?!
WHO LET BRO COOK 🔥🔥🔥
this is why its arbitrary to rank the touhou games,,,
Honestly i couldnt rank them even if i tried? double dealing character being the weakest just i cant really accept? i really like the characters from that game, and the music being weak is like saying that pizza is bad. yeah, this is opinion i get it but i dont think its fair to rank touhou like this. certain entries are weaker, but ranking them doesnt work.
IT IS A TOP 3 GAME
i really like ddc lol
@@caughtjelqing2271 I love it too.
So many mistakes I'm sorry I can't take you seriously.
He's right I too can't forget my 99+ against clownpiece
2:50 oh god did he mention tpl... oh god oh fuck
Have you ever touch the official game before?(be honest because most of the touhou fan never touch the of official game)
could have guessed hes a ikaruga fan
Ehh maji? Easy Modo? Kimooi!
I was going to say you forgot 12.8 Fairy Wars, but maybe you thought the freezing mechanic was too weird.
That's not apart of the main main series since it's a 0. Game
@@niichigary8609 It's still a game ZUN created and a bullet hell by his definition.
I also agree that's it's not a main game. If we go only by this definition touhou 9.5 and 12.5 and 14.3 also only created by ZUN and a bullet hell .
@@1INBAL this was going off mainline games in the series, not spinoffs
How on EARTH can Touhou 4 be so low???
It introduced the focus mechanic. Just for that it's one of if not THE best PC-98 Touhou game.
Also, it's funny that you say LLS has no memorable music, because Bad Apple originates from that game lmfao
"[Touhou 8] has 3 characters"
You mean 4?
The only bad touhou system for me is Touhou 10-11 it's so hard to enjoy it, yes we have abundance amount of bomb but using one will make use weaker overtime, i just hate the ideas that your powers are the bomb also no master spark are straight up illegal
is there any way to get these for free or some with translation since the website in the link doens't work anymore
Moriya shrine web
i feel hurt, i am a touhou 4 enjoyer
wbawc 4 SA 10 okay man
ufo and lolk were about the right place though
Found a gem of a channel.
Happy to see UFO at 2 👍
I Hate ufo so much
Touhou 4 is the best from the pc-98 games, beat me.
now play seihou :)
