How to Balance Redox Equations in Basic Solution

  • We'll go step by step through how to balance an oxidation reduction (redox) reaction in basic solution. The process is similar to balance an oxidation reduction equation in acidic solution. Most importantly, both charges and atoms must balance. Here are the steps: first, calculate oxidations numbers for all the elements in the equation. Next, figure out what is being oxidized and what is being reduced. Then, write half reactions for the oxidation and reduction. After that, balance each half reaction: first, for the atoms other than O and H, then for O and H, and finally for charge by adding electrons. After being balanced, the oxidation and reduction half reactions are ready to be added back to together. Make sure that the number of electrons is the same in the oxidation and reduction half reactions. If they are not, multiply one or both of the half reactions to make the number of electrons the same. Then, combine the oxidation and reduction half reaction, canceling out stuff that appears on both sides of the equation. To get rid of the H+ ions, add OH- (hydroxide) ions to both side. Then combine the H+ and OH- to make water, H2O. Finally, subtract out any H2O molecules you can from both sides of the equations. Lastly, do a final check to make sure that everything balances: both atoms and charge.

I live in Sweden and I study pharmacy at university. I usally sit more than six hours everyday to watch and try to understand lectures about chemistry that my teachers upload. The length of one avarge lecture is about 1,5-2 hrs, and includes a whole chapter from a book that the teacher tries to explain in detail. Unfortunately, I get lost and in the end I start to question my choice of subject. However, I found you here on youtube, and let me tell you that you cover everything that my teachers tries to explain within or even less than one hour. Not only do you go over everything in detail within a short amount of time, you do it in a way I never seen someone teach before, passionated and with an pedagogical effect. You really make everything easy, your stratergy of breaking the topic down into smaller pieces and putting them togehter is phenomenal. I've learned more from you than I do from my teachers, who are professors and doctors!
I want to thank you for your dedicaton and for taking your time to upload videos! If i pass my exams, it will be thanks to you, If I don't, it is still thanks to you that I understand things I thought I'd never understand, which is a huge goal for me.
    THANK YOU :D

And I was crying over this for almost a week! If any teacher is reading this comment, I highly exhort you to never assume that the student you are teaching knows the "SIMPLE STUFF" already, even if he's an intelligent person. They sure do know thecontextual feel of the topic but it's always good to teach things in the same way you would teach a nursery kid. How much time will it consume? Probably 4-5 minutes per 40 minutes lecture to talk about every thing that may be potentially ambiguous

Tyler this is exactly how I learned to this about 50yrs ago ,however some instructors may have a problem with adding H+ in your intermediate step in basic solution ,although your final answer is correct .For the purist to satisfy them it is best to add twice as many OH_ when in basic solution to balance your O, then add half as many H20 to balance the H. The shorter way to do is by the oxidation number method ,and not the half cell method. Once you have figured out what is being oxidized ,and reduced and have accounted for the electrons gained and lost ,these will become the coefficients in your final answer ,namely two for the oxidation agent, and one for the reducing agent. The rest can be balanced by inspection.

Man tbh i have been studying chemistry for over a month now and something with identify and balancing the charges of both reactions is really been giving me struggles. You are just the one who helped me understand it in under just 3 minutes. my dumb ass teacher didn't teach me for more than 5 hours of lectures already. I just wish and hope more professors would teach in a way as you do and if so many students will pass and learn fast.
