    This is so helpful! I lost so much weight in the past year I’ve had to replace my ENTIRE wardrobe. At least the cute comfy sweaters can stay now! I thought I was pulling an “oversized clothes” look for a few months until someone told me it just looked like I was borrowing someone else’s clothes (yikes!). Sweaters can be so expensive, you saved my fall/winter wardrobe!

    Don’t feel bad or think it won’t work by hand either guys! I do some historical sewing and there’s plenty of hand stitches that have lasted till this day from the 1800’s, 1700’s, and even from the 1600’s. If you look up a few tutorials you can learn how to do some historical back stitching that is surprisingly strong!

      honestly, if this is a plush sweater, even large-ish running stitches will work !

    Thank you for this. I made a sweater for my 91-year-old father in law and he told me XL. However, he has been ill and lost a lot of weight and it's so big he can't wear it, so now I am confident to attempt the alteration.

    I love how fast you are able to sew. I seem to always run into problems with my machine. The top is great but then I get a bobbin rat nest. Or the top is great but the bottom stitch has too many loops. I trust my brother to program itself. Clearly I am missing something related to tension, threading. I keep reading the owners manual. So frustrating!

    • @mesaieuxfam
      @mesaieuxfam 3 роки тому +1

      That often happens if you’re not using the exact same thread on the spool as what is in the bobbin. Even if they’re the same colour, it has to be the same thread from the same spool in both the bobbin and the spool. Of course you may also need to adjust the thread tension as well. Do a few test strips before working on your project, to ensure that you have it all set up correctly.

    • @stephanieswtchks800
      @stephanieswtchks800 3 роки тому

      I always use the same thread top and bottom. When I do a test it is always perfect. That said, the test is a small piece. The project is larger. I will try the tension. It may get overwhelmed with more fabric. Thank you!!

    • @RitaCrane
      @RitaCrane  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Alex! Yes I would recommend to use your sewing machine first to see how it fits you, then if you like the fit, serge away! :)

    • @winnieskees9622
      @winnieskees9622 3 роки тому +1

      @Alex Hunter ~ ~ Yes Sew FIRST! I took an old white sweater and made a “pouch bag” for my daughter, probably in 7th grade. Ran an ink pen down for the shape I wanted - sewed a double line of stitching on each side of the ink line. ThenI cut down the middle between the sewed lines, voila’ cute little bag. Added a fringe of yellow yarn for trim. I made with the same technique handles to carry it by with the sleeves. I don’t know how I got the idea that it would work, but tried it and it did!

  • @bluedingo1186
    @bluedingo1186 3 роки тому +2

    Would this method also work with a chunkier knitted sweater? I ordered one online and the shape looks nothing like the picture. I don't want to throw it out because I love the pattern and the colors, and I'm really hoping to salvage it.

  • @EchoSappho
    @EchoSappho 4 роки тому +2

    I use the same technique but by hand, however, I come across a problem. Maybe you can help? My winter sweater is a knitted without much finesse and the yarn is chunky, if you know what I mean. It's not a see-through sweater, but you can definitely see through it a little bit. When I try to slim on the inside like you did, you can see the stitches on the outside a little bit. The sweater is bought so I don't have thread exactly in that colour. I used another shade similar to slim it (yarn, not thread). Would it work better with normal thread, or a different technique maybe? I only need slimming just below the arm pits and in the waist, not on the sleeves. Thank you in advance!

    • @RitaCrane
      @RitaCrane  4 роки тому +2

      Hi! I think maybe using the same color thread would be most ideal! that way you won't see the thread through the sweater and it will all look the same. Thank you for your comment! :)

So you can get a nice Brother for about $50 the case when I bought mine was about $25 - - all Christmas reduced prices, so 2 pieces came out cheaper than the sewing machine by itself.
