- Now that Sweater weather is officially here, I'm sharing a sewing hack that I've used for years to make any large sweater fit you exactly the way you want! I found this sweater from a second hand store that wasn't my size but I knew I could make it fit exactly that way I wanted after only a few alterations. Show some love, become a sub and thank you for watching!

Don’t feel bad or think it won’t work by hand either guys! I do some historical sewing and there’s plenty of hand stitches that have lasted till this day from the 1800’s, 1700’s, and even from the 1600’s. If you look up a few tutorials you can learn how to do some historical back stitching that is surprisingly strong!
honestly, if this is a plush sweater, even large-ish running stitches will work !
This is so helpful! I lost so much weight in the past year I’ve had to replace my ENTIRE wardrobe. At least the cute comfy sweaters can stay now! I thought I was pulling an “oversized clothes” look for a few months until someone told me it just looked like I was borrowing someone else’s clothes (yikes!). Sweaters can be so expensive, you saved my fall/winter wardrobe!
Glad it was helpful!
Congratulations on the weight loss!
Kaise weight loss kiya
Thank you for this. I made a sweater for my 91-year-old father in law and he told me XL. However, he has been ill and lost a lot of weight and it's so big he can't wear it, so now I am confident to attempt the alteration.
So glad to hear! Thank you for your comment! :)
Exactly what I was looking for, my favorite sweaters and I are thrilled.
Love the tutorial. I too lost a bunch of weight and have a few sweaters I just love. Now I can make them fit!
Exactly what I needed and so simple too. I had a lot of doubts but thanks to you I am ready to give my sweater a try! ❤️
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for taking the mystery out of it! Lost some weight, but love my sweaters. Now, I can make them fit.
Thank you!! I thrifted a few giant mens sweaters last year and liked the oversized look, but now I want more fitted sweaters but didn't want to donate my favorites back! Saving me all kinds of time and hassle :)
I'm so glad you found this tutorial helpful!
Thank you, this is perfect. I have lost several sizes but have sweaters I still want to wear. Even I can do rhis!
THANK YOU! Can't wait to take in some oversized baggy sweaters.
This is exactly the video I was looking for! You made it seem so easy to do! Thank you sooo much!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for!!! I was able to fix up my sweater!
Glad it was helpful! :)
Pretty sweater, and that's a great sewing hack. Thanks, for the clear tutorials. I'm going to try it . Thank you !
I bought a cotton knit sweater that stretched out over time. What a great idea to alter mine! Many thanks.
Wonderful! glad it was helpful! :)
Fast fashion can have really bad fit sometimes, it's awesome to know we can custom our sweaters too. Thanks a lot for making this video ^-^
You're so welcome!
Well done , but why did you not zig zag after you cut ?
You are awesome! Now I have been able to fix 4 sweaters that looked as though I was being swallowed by a wool sheep.
Now they look so cute on me , thank you for this “How to “ video
Very grateful . 🙂
Thank you for your kind words! I'm so glad to hear that this tutorial helped you!

Excellent tutorial. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love the way you explain things! Subscribed😄
Thank you so much!! ❤️
Very well explained. Thank you.
i like adding my extra material to the bottom of the sweater (on one side V'd)... to make it asymmetrical....... makes it super kewt
thank you so much for that video! it was informative and easy to understand :-) Great job
Thank you!
oh wow i thought my knit sweaters were hopeless to alter but thanks to your video i can see the seam. I wont do it myself but at least i know it can be done :)
I'm glad this inspired you! :)
i got my tailor to do it for me, but your work is Amazing 😁
From Chile, thanks you!
Thank you for sharing. What stitch setting did you use please?
Fabulous! Can you do this for me, altering a XL sweater to a M? Thanks, Alan
Thabks so much super helpful!
this is so useful and well explained!! thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
You're awesome!
Just tried this and it turned out so good. My stripes are little wonky in the arm pit but I don’t think anyone would ever see it.
Love this video, super helpful! Would I be able to stitch by hand or do I need a sewing machine to be able to do this?
Thank you. I am slimming a sweater my dad gave me, and wanted to see how a sweater should be dealt with compared to a cotton t-shirt.
I see it is the same in the matter of making sure the stiches remains secure and dosen't break up.
Thank you for sharing. :)

Thank you ✨
You’re welcome 😊
Love the upcycling aspect!
Thank you!
I hadn't thought about sewing it before cutting. Very useful tutorial, thank you
Thank you for watching!
what brand and model sewing machine do you use?
Hey Rita! :) Can you help me, please? I've a doubt... If I buy a 3XL extra fine merino wool sweater (uniqlo's size type) it will fit really really really big on me or not?
The body width of the sweater is 26 7/9 inches; shoulder width is 19 2/3 and lenght 30 inches.
- I'm 6''1' tall, 205 lbs, my body width is 23 inches and my shoulder width is 21 inches. I want a baggy kind of oversized outfit but not that oversized lol. Thanks for helping :)
Hi Rita it looks great. May I ask Does it stay ok after hand washing?
Very cool thank you! Would you use an overlocker on this? I am nervous about the cutting, but maybe if I put it through my sewing machine once first before serging?
Hi Alex! Yes I would recommend to use your sewing machine first to see how it fits you, then if you like the fit, serge away! :)
@Alex Hunter ~ ~ Yes Sew FIRST! I took an old white sweater and made a “pouch bag” for my daughter, probably in 7th grade. Ran an ink pen down for the shape I wanted - sewed a double line of stitching on each side of the ink line. ThenI cut down the middle between the sewed lines, voila’ cute little bag. Added a fringe of yellow yarn for trim. I made with the same technique handles to carry it by with the sleeves. I don’t know how I got the idea that it would work, but tried it and it did!
What should i do to fit large shoulder sweater?☹️
Nice tip for the sleeve, thanks 6:17
I love how fast you are able to sew. I seem to always run into problems with my machine. The top is great but then I get a bobbin rat nest. Or the top is great but the bottom stitch has too many loops. I trust my brother to program itself. Clearly I am missing something related to tension, threading. I keep reading the owners manual. So frustrating!
That often happens if you’re not using the exact same thread on the spool as what is in the bobbin. Even if they’re the same colour, it has to be the same thread from the same spool in both the bobbin and the spool. Of course you may also need to adjust the thread tension as well. Do a few test strips before working on your project, to ensure that you have it all set up correctly.
I always use the same thread top and bottom. When I do a test it is always perfect. That said, the test is a small piece. The project is larger. I will try the tension. It may get overwhelmed with more fabric. Thank you!!
Hey! Thanks for the fantastic and simple tutorial. I'm just curious what stitch length and tension you used so I can have a better idea when I attempt this myself. Thanks!
Hi! I'm so glad you enjoyed this tutorial! I used a 5.0 stitch length.. it's the longest stitch available on my sewing machine. As for the tension, I have it set to auto. Thank you!
@@RitaCrane That's amazing, thank you!
I'm short so this is very helpful.
How is it possible for the sweater to not unravel after you cut it? Is it because of the stitch you used?
Would this method also work with a chunkier knitted sweater? I ordered one online and the shape looks nothing like the picture. I don't want to throw it out because I love the pattern and the colors, and I'm really hoping to salvage it.
I don't see why you couldn't couldn't! :)
This is great!! Do you think this would work with a lambswool sweater too?
Hi Jenna! I think that will work too! :)
@rita crane, nice! I shop a lot and I always tend to see by my hand my clothes. I just moved here to US from Philippines, in my country, its super cheap to someone fix. I want to buy sewing machine. I want a beginner sewing machine, any suggestions, please?
Oh i can imagine that, price gap. Maybe.. Suggestion.. Buy a second hand one. Or use one in a community centre. Put an advertisement to hire a sewing machine twice a year.
Hi Mai! The two brands you can't go wrong with are brother or singer. I have a brother and I love it! amzn.to/3kfKON3
@Mai Lopez Fraser ~ ~ You probably have a WallMart in your area - - every Christmas they have their machines on sale at 1/2 price, and their cases also. So you can get a nice Brother for about $50 the case when I bought mine was about $25 - - all Christmas reduced prices, so 2 pieces came out cheaper than the sewing machine by itself.
I use the same technique but by hand, however, I come across a problem. Maybe you can help? My winter sweater is a knitted without much finesse and the yarn is chunky, if you know what I mean. It's not a see-through sweater, but you can definitely see through it a little bit. When I try to slim on the inside like you did, you can see the stitches on the outside a little bit. The sweater is bought so I don't have thread exactly in that colour. I used another shade similar to slim it (yarn, not thread). Would it work better with normal thread, or a different technique maybe? I only need slimming just below the arm pits and in the waist, not on the sleeves. Thank you in advance!
Hi! I think maybe using the same color thread would be most ideal! that way you won't see the thread through the sweater and it will all look the same. Thank you for your comment! :)
@@RitaCrane Thank you for responding, very kind of you :)
That track is dope though! Is that original?
Hi I am from India but I liked your video
Do we need to use a different needle for sweaters when using a sewing machine?
That's a great question. I didn't for this.
Do you think it would work with chenille sweater too? 🥺
Yes I think it absolutely could work! Just make sure to zig zag after you straight stitch so it doesn't frey.
Need recommendation for a small seeing machine ! Thanks everyone
I don't have personal experience working with a sewing machine but amazon is a great place to find some.
Isn’t the wool to thick to go through the machine? Will it not Frey?
It depends on the thickness of the wool. It will probably frey if you don't stitch the ends with the zig zag after the straight stitch. This sweater is cashmere. :)
Thaaaaaaaank youuuuuuuuuuuuu🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
It's not serged, if the machine did not cut the fabric. Did you zig zag the seam to keep it from unraveling?
Yes that’s what I did.
@@RitaCrane Hi, Thanks for replying. I have a sewing video request. Can you buy a too small thrift store sweater, deliberately, and upsize it, to fit you? That would make my day. No one seems to have a video, showing this. I would appreciate it.
Got extra sweater material now? Make doll sweaters or mug cozies! Wool bits also start up a campfire fast.
what is the number of the needle that you have used ?
Hi Nikki, I have a Jersey Needle on my machine. It's a ballpoint needle 70/10 :)
Nice project concept. Ftr, tho, for a job this small, a sewing machine is neither more secure nor faster than doing it by hand. Also, doing it by hand avoids that bulky seam the machine produces on thick sweaters.
What kind of sewing machine is that in the vid?
It's a brother sewing machine. It's about 15 years old. I left some options in the description box.
W😉W bby thank you 🙏
Great, just recently loss weight! 😊
Why do you say mushroom’s color?
Seems to me it is a tint of brown.
how about a knitted sweater?:(
U looks so cute.....
Thank you!
