This statement is kinda ironic, considering the fact that troughout the 19th century the Habsburgs were the most relative-isolated royal house in Europe. Queen Victoria played the same game as Maria Theresa, marrying off her daughters to important rulers, however unlike Maria Theresa, her daughters were far more successful in making children, which lead to pretty much all European monarchs being close relatives. Well, he married for love alright. One sided love. He was supposed to marry one of his cousins, preferably from Bavaria. Also, the Habsburgs were deeply Catholic so their brides had to be catholic, but there weren't many Catholic monarchies left in Europe, mostly small duchies.
I started watching some of the series years ago, and was absolutely fascinating and hope they seem to done such a fantastic job of not only the hissed historical aspect that the portraying of the characters were probably as life like to bring them to the screen as you could imagine. Now it is normal that people including royals marry for love and it would be weird if they had an arranged marriage, back then it was every royal's duty to marry for the country's sake and marrying for love was not a thing. And I don't think that Will has not put duty before his personal interests in most cases in his life. More than his family members anyway 😅

Someone in the comments said about MT being a bad mother but I know from actual sources that she wasn't. While there might be disagreements with the family but they're not dysfunctional either. MT and Franz relationship with their children seems more bonded than Ferdinand and Isabella. The emphasis of children becoming pawns didn't have a heavy emphasis here unlike before, I guess it's because MT learned from the monarchs that came before her.
Well the fact is this was actually pretty normal. The oldest male child would inherit everything but Otherwise Royal children were useless and the only thing you could even do with them was marry them off for political alliances.

Ugh, I have this impression that the French court was frivolous, hedonistic, and superficial. That is not to say the Austrian court is perfect but there seemed to be some more gravitas. But still, the French were still among the strongest military powers in Europe at the time.

No, MT was not a bad mother. This tv series exaggerates a lot of things and it portrays many things inaccurately. She is portrayed as a much worse person and mother than she was irl. She was not so cold when it came to her children, on the contrary, she got very very emotional a lot of times. She was a very attentive mother who cared a lot for her children, but she also had the responsibility of an empire, millions of people, not just 16 children. She did not have the same luxury as Francis, who could be a 100% parent and did not have to make such hard decisions for the empire as MT had to. That being said, Francis was an awesome dad, especially by 18th century standards, he seems like a 21st century dad from the historical records.

Yeah, Maria T fought a lot for her marriage with Francis who she loved. On one hand, she was terribly lucky because their marriage was also politically convenient, since many preferred a "neutral", less powerful husband for the Habsburg heiress, who would not dominate her and bring the empire under foreign control. Her father also loved him like a son (probably more than his own daughters), so he didn't require much convincing from MT that he woukd be the perfect son-in-law. But at the time of her marriage MT didn't rule yet and had no idea how hard times awaited her. She had to fight a long and hard war to keep her throne, but she lost territories. She found herself without allies at the beginning of her reign, abd she had to build up everything from zero almost. To build an empire that is strobg militarily, politically, economically, etc, and she created a web of alliances for that too. These required marriages with the other dynasties. So she did what every other monarch did at the time, married of her children. And there is also the fact that Francis cheated on her a lot, which caused her a lot of pain and suffering. Maybe she failed to see the advantages of love marriages after that.

This statement is kinda ironic, considering the fact that troughout the 19th century the Habsburgs were the most relative-isolated royal house in Europe. Queen Victoria played the same game as Maria Theresa, marrying off her daughters to important rulers, however unlike Maria Theresa, her daughters were far more successful in making children, which lead to pretty much all European monarchs being close relatives. Except for the Habsburgs, because the Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph married for love and he ruled for what was seen as eternity at that point, while his presumed successor did the same (before he got his brains blown out by a Serbian terrorist)

Well, he married for love alright. One sided love. He was supposed to marry one of his cousins, preferably from Bavaria. Also, the Habsburgs were deeply Catholic so their brides had to be catholic, but there weren't many Catholic monarchies left in Europe, mostly small duchies.

I started watching some of the series years ago, and was absolutely fascinating and hope they seem to done such a fantastic job of not only the hissed historical aspect that the portraying of the characters were probably as life like to bring them to the screen as you could imagine. Especially with Maria, Teresa, France, Steven, and Joseph, and Joseph’s two wives.
Leopold married one of the most beautiful and kindest princess in Europe, Maria Luisa de Borbon. Maria Teresa was delighted with her.

@@fernandopuig3634 It is completely different now, in a 21st century constitutional monarchy where hardly anything depends on the monarch and everything is decided by the Parliament, than in an absolute monarchy in the 18th century when you were responsible for every single little thing that happened in your empire. Now it is normal that people including royals marry for love and it would be weird if they had an arranged marriage, back then it was every royal's duty to marry for the country's sake and marrying for love was not a thing.

Someone in the comments said about MT being a bad mother but I know from actual sources that she wasn't. While there might be disagreements with the family but they're not dysfunctional either. MT and Franz relationship with their children seems more bonded than Ferdinand and Isabella. The emphasis of children becoming pawns didn't have a heavy emphasis here unlike before, I guess it's because MT learned from the monarchs that came before her.

Ugh, I have this impression that the French court was frivolous, hedonistic, and superficial. That is not to say the Austrian court is perfect but there seemed to be some more gravitas. But still, the French were still among the strongest military powers in Europe at the time.
Maria Theresa was so adamant that her children be part of the family business and were raised as such from early on. Francis Stephen literally stumbled into Court War Council session where their 2 year old son Ferdinand was applying for regimental command recently vacated by death of 70yo field marshal, dressed in uniform. It is obvious how Maria Theresa treated her children as assets of state in perpetual game of high politics. It is also very strange to notice how Francis Stephen was that ''mother'' figure with his sanguine and more emotional personality.

No, MT was not a bad mother. This tv series exaggerates a lot of things and it portrays many things inaccurately. She is portrayed as a much worse person and mother than she was irl. She was not so cold when it came to her children, on the contrary, she got very very emotional a lot of times.
She was a very attentive mother who cared a lot for her children, but she also had the responsibility of an empire, millions of people, not just 16 children. She did not have the same luxury as Francis, who could be a 100% parent and did not have to make such hard decisions for the empire as MT had to. That being said, Francis was an awesome dad, especially by 18th century standards, he seems like a 21st century dad from the historical records.

Not everyone was and is. He did his duty regarding the duchy Tuscany when he inherited it, administering the duchy's affairs, but that was all, he was not interested in the empire's big politics, it was his wife's duty and he was happy to leave it that way. He was an extremely intelligent and smart man with a lot of interests, he was an extraordinary businessman and economist, thanks to him his son Joseph inherited an empire in excellent financial state. He was interested in natural sciences, biology, geography, and he was a freemason.

Correct me if I'm wrong: Didn't Maria Theresia parents try to arrange her marriage with a foreign prince, but she didn't want to because she wanted to be with Francis and got what she wanted? Or am I thinking of another royal princess? If it is her, why couldn't her children do the same?
Yeah, Maria T fought a lot for her marriage with Francis who she loved. On one hand, she was terribly lucky because their marriage was also politically convenient, since many preferred a "neutral", less powerful husband for the Habsburg heiress, who would not dominate her and bring the empire under foreign control. Her father also loved him like a son (probably more than his own daughters), so he didn't require much convincing from MT that he woukd be the perfect son-in-law.
But at the time of her marriage MT didn't rule yet and had no idea how hard times awaited her. She had to fight a long and hard war to keep her throne, but she lost territories. She found herself without allies at the beginning of her reign, abd she had to build up everything from zero almost. To build an empire that is strobg militarily, politically, economically, etc, and she created a web of alliances for that too. These required marriages with the other dynasties. So she did what every other monarch did at the time, married of her children.
And there is also the fact that Francis cheated on her a lot, which caused her a lot of pain and suffering. Maybe she failed to see the advantages of love marriages after that.

Maria Antonia wasn’t supposed to marry Louis. Her older sister was, and she was much better suited to be queen of France. She was also considered the most beautiful of all the sisters (who were all considered beautiful), But she contracted smallpox, which left her scarred…so she couldn’t marry the dauphin of France, and so the role was left to Marie Antoinette instead.

This is my take hadnt Johanna and Josepha died, Johanna would had married Ferdinand of Naples, while Josepha will marry Ferdinand of Parma (Josepha is the favorite sister of Joseph II, and he still cling with his Parma connection). The Saxonian court pressed the Habsburg to compensate for the fate of Kunegunde being the rejected princess (which was a scandal back then) Ferdinand would be available for her, they might just give them a duchy just like when Maria Christina married Albert of Saxony they made them Duke and Duchess of Teschen.

@@Lily1127channel I could tell by the words and grammar. I understand standard German but never Austrian German or Swiss German which itself is an entirely language on its own. I found a Bavarian German book and it's close to the Schweitzer Deutsch.

For the Record: its no accident that Maria Theresas daughters maried the Bourbon Princes after Francis I. Stephens death.
Of course it is no accident. They were not of marrying age before Francis's death. The first Bourbon-Habsburg marriage was Leopold and his Spanish bride in 1765, just right before Francis died. The girls were younger, their Bourbon marriages happened in 1769 and after.

Well, of course I don't regard this series as historical evidence 😀 I meant there was no evidence of that in historical records. I said that because I have read several books with biographies of Maria Theresa and there it was never mentioned that MT and FS had any disagreements about their children's marriage plans, save for one case. That one case they mentioned was Maria Christina, who wanted to marry her lover Albert, but FS didn't want her to marry so low, he wanted an arranged marriage for her with his nephew Benedetto of Savoy. Christina could only marry Albert after FS's death.
I actually thought you meant FS was against these arranged marriages for his daughters altogether. I mean arranged marriage in general. Which he was not, since he wanted one for Christina for sure. So he was just against the Bourbon marriages? And just for his daughters, but not for his son? And what was the reason? His personal dislike (as a Lorranian) for Bourbons? And why was his refusal only about his daughters' marriage alliances but not his son's?
