It's Hard To Wait For The Next Eruption While The Risk Of Major Damage Increases

  • 17 million cubic meters of magma in a pressurising magma chamber by Grindavik are a growing concern due to the damage we foresee because the town's defenses are already damaged. We could get lucky and the eruption occurs further north than the last one, but it's uncertain and it looks more and more likely that we might get just another surprise.
I decided to be very stubborn in my attempt to photograph the beginning of the next eruption which is an important piece of footage in a collection that has been in production since 2021, and the final piece I need in order to make the first 8 eruption into a documentary. So I slept in the car in order to be close by because if I'm not pithing the region when this starts, I won't get kind of footage i want. so spent the days moving around filming, and my back still hurts bad now, only me to blame. But I tried, and I will try again soon. In the worst case scenario, drive the 5 hours from home as soon as this starts.
Me and Shawn Willsey will finally do the interview he asked me to do months ago tomorrow and check his channel for that. He's a geology Professor and done a fantastic job when it comes to the in depth analysis that we don't get from local experts.

Sleeping in the car is what I call enthusiasm. It's definitely still cold in Iceland. Watch your health , although I would of course be happy to see more videos of your interesting homeland.
The residents of southern Italy near the Pfleigräischen Felder (Naples) are currently also worried about their homeland. Many strong earthquakes worry them and some houses have already had to be evacuated because of the damage.

As I was watching your video where you were driving over what just looked like a very rough patch of ground and then you said it was the plate boundary, I was totally awestruck by the idea that a structure that is so essential to the planet was right there where you could drive over it in your car. Amazing! Thank you so much for giving me that moment. Irreplaceable.

Another great video, thank you! I've been concerned more about this eruption than previous ones also so understand that uneasy feeling. Please be careful! Documenting the eruption isn't worth you getting hurt. I know you are very experienced at traveling around your country and dealing with volcanos (and I sound like a clucking mother hen) but make sure you have your bike in case of car breakdown, your gas mask and gas monitor and stay close enough to rescue people and have a way to call for help in case you fall or something. We can do without the footage but we cannot do without you. Sending prayers your way!

Be very careful Gilfy, a lot of pressure is building up in the magma chamber, it could reach a point where the pressure will force a path (the same or different) from the other intrusions. Please stay safe.
Gilfy (I don't know if it's you who changes it or UA-cam) but keep the subtitles enabled on the videos, so even people from other countries will be able to follow along, even if it's through YT's automatic translation.

Sleeping in the car? Maybe get a good tent, ground sheet, sleeping bag and inflatable matrass :-) Not that expensive and I've slept comfortably with such gear in all sorts of Icelandic terrain, including the sharp pebbles of Landmannalaugar, a meadow riddled with þúfur (grassy hummocks) and Hekla tephra (on that occasion we got woken up by very enthusiastic sheep - what they did there where there was almost no grass I'll never understand) and, throughout, ahm, nice Icelandic summer weather. The one thing my tent zipper didn't appreciate though was a very dusty wind near Herðubreið .... so watch out with ash!

Thank you for being a guest on Shawn Wilsey’s show. Where did you say the ‘flood geography’ is? There is lava landscape to the northwest of Grindavik near Vogar that look like the action of ocean waves upon expansive ocean beaches. Perhaps a heavy volcanic lava flow when the land level was lower and ocean waves sculpted the lava flow on what was at beach level back then? There are many of the long parallel lines in that area. You have a given yourself an immense work load, like a scholar of the geology of Iceland in a videography format. Amazing effort and quality. Thank you.

The trails look fun :D And I love when youtubers I admire do collaborations... Shawn is a great font of knowledge and very adept at getting information across to us lay people. :) Thanks for all you do... I hope you get 'that' shot, when the volcano starts! You deserve it for all your hard work!!!

Wonderful report and video, Gylfi, as always. Prime time viewing for an arm-chair traveller. Didn't envy your car and driver on the rocky road trip!

Now we know it was another week after you released this video before the eruption finally started. The magma was building up more and more pressure but waited a while.

I sure hope you will be able to witness the start of the next eruption in person, but anyway, the your documenting of the before and after landscape is very important. With all the magma building up, the next one may be severe. 🙏for Grindavik and the hard working people who build the barriers.

Hello and good morning. I know you must be oh so tired and still not over the flu. I am sorry if I am adding to your work load but I have noticed a egole long ridge which I believe is about to go as a massive rockfall.
I have been watching Afar camera grindavic no 36 and it seing back and forth across the whole area from the power station to Grindavik. It zooms in on some gulls nesting.
Since November the ridge of grey granet has widened, there have been a few rock falls as the grant was like a band all across the top. However since yesterday this band has wide Ed a lot and I think could become a hazard. There is a track road down at the bottom of this long ridge and I would hate anyone to be hurt. Many thanks Dawn

If you were getting a bad feeling, perhaps your body was detecting something - pressure, maybe a change in gas percentage in the area you were in, more CO2 than normal, etc. Sometimes a "bad feeling" is a body's red alarm for things your conscious mind may not be detecting. Good idea to leave that area you were in.
