i was taught using a smaller pc first then each layer after that is slightly larger. this way each layer is bonded to the boat. by using a large pc first and its adhesion fails, then the entire patch falls off.
@@KnottsFishing backing with a pc of cardboard and wax paper over it would be my choice...i still like the fact of each layer coming in contact with the hull
@@KnottsFishing the paint sticks will hold up enough for you to get some glass down and won’t take up any space in that area. This also stoops it from sagging and preventing you to have to build multiple layers up
There’s actually a good reason for this. Keeps the resin from sticking to areas not cleaned yet and the main reason is the dirt settles into the small spider cracks and shows up clear as day when your sanding the boat. Helps identify areas that you may not see if you pressure washed it all away.
Bro, the surface I worked and glassed on was ground down with a grinder sanded and wiped off with acetone and denatured alcohol. Pretty sure it’ll stick to where I want it to stick. Go back and reread why i left it dirty.
I know I know. Boats been sitting for about 2 years now. We moved houses had a baby and life has had me busy. Ill be getting back on the boat this fall/winter
Strip of marine ply; sub-grade lumber; or, teak placed in that channel/fiberglassed in place then topped with mesh & resin.
Finally a real world, no BS theory, minimum time and effort, great repair work. Thank you!
Thanks for the good words.
Coming along nicely. Time to get that thing done, the season is here!!!
Dragging my feet, not looking forward to sanding all this non skid down....
I like how you did the edge with that CSM, good idea!
Hey thanks Dave! The CSM Always feathers out really well. Thanks for watching!

Ive heard of it both ways I used this method since I didnt use a backer to support the glass bigger piece so when it sagged it didnt fall through.

@@johncartelli i agree 100, I was just being lazy and working quick.
Holding the rail, I would epoxy a backing piece of marine ply under that glass for a bit more strength.
I was originally planning on gelcoat, so epoxy wasnt an option until after I finished the job.
I see what you mean. I would have but factory had no wood backing either so I think itll be good. Not much stress on that spot. Hopefully
@@KnottsFishing I tend to overbuild repairs so I dont have to revisit. Your repair turned out just fine so off you go.
@@doggydaddo47 absolutely, I can always add the wood backing, I may just do that and make a video....🤔 Thanks for watching and the comments.
I would clean it first the whole boat that way you see what needs to be fixed
It was cleaned then got dirty sitting in-between repairs with mildew.
WOW, this restoration is going great! I love the boat!
Thanks for watching! Ill keep the boat rebuild updated as I go.
So you did not put anykind of backing under the glass to screw in to ?
I dont plan on putting the rail back on.
There was so much Timelapse footage and music with that hole I almost fell in love with it
I almost loved it so much I ummm, nevermind. 😆
Ive worked on some bad boats in my days at the boatyard, this one takes the crown..And you made it even worse with that horrible fiber job..Awefull
What would you have done differently?
Of course they gave no response.
Cool channel. Is there a reason you laid the 1708 mat side up? Thanks.
Thanks, Capt Mike! No reason, probably not paying attention.
hello, for under the water line holes that we dont have acces to both sides should we use mat or gloth
This is above water line repair.
Should have feathered the edges more before applying glass
Ill keep that in mind next time. Thank you.
What is that material you are covering? It looks like resin without the fiberglass.
1708 and resin.
@@KnottsFishing The red part that you were grinding at the beginning is 1708 fiberglass?
@@ecco222 oh yes I think thats why it cracked factory didnt have much glass in there at all seemed like it was almost all resin.
WTF... There is no glass in the affected area. I wonder how how far down the gunnel that problem runs?
Looks like fun in any case. Peace.
I was thinking the same thing looked like straight resin.
Clean with acetone first always
Great advice.
great job, you act like you have done that before...lol
Thank you! Done it a few more times than id like to admit.
Should have hot glued some paint stir sticks to plug the hole before you glass it up to prevent the glass from sagging
Yea I thought about that and for some reason thought it wouldnt sag that bad. I was wrong and had to build it up higher than needed.
@@KnottsFishing the paint sticks will hold up enough for you to get some glass down and won’t take up any space in that area. This also stoops it from sagging and preventing you to have to build multiple layers up
Im going to do that next time for sure! Thanks for the tip!
Why not clean that damn thing before working on it! 😂

Dude resin will not adhere to a dirty surface. So there’s a very good reason for a clean work surface!

@@terryfonz4603 same principle as a guide coat. Shows me the cracks when I’m sanding.
Is that epoxy resin? Just asking because I know epoxy resin gets a red tint when it ages
What kind of resins?
Im using polyester resin here.
Under fod the same masking tape better
Agreed, would have prevented sagging
Doveva fare l'inverso prima i fogli piccoli poi i grandi.
Alcuni dicono che inizia con il più piccolo e diventa più grande e altri dicono che inizia con il più grande e diventa più piccolo.

Right, seems to be working for me. 2 years old no issues so far. 😂😂
