N&W 611's 90s WHISTLE In The Sugar Fields! US Sugar 148 On The Moore Haven Meteor 11-26-23

- A BIG whistle for a small locomotive!
This weekend, US Sugar no. 148 was fitted with N&W J Class no. 611's 80s-90s era whistle, owned by the Claytor family, and I couldn't pass up this rare opportunity to hear it in action! Today, we chase the 148 on the Moore Haven Meteor from Clewiston to Moore Haven and Back again.

Before this excursion, and 611's return to steam in 2015 I thought we wouldn't hear this whistle under steam again after it saw use on 1225. But it seems like it wasn't, which I'm glad as that Hancock whistle was one of many reasons I became fascinated with 611 as a child. And an engine I do hope to see one day, as well as 148.
Sounds very close to being SP&S 700's Whistle. I love it!!!

This whistle is in fact 611s original whistle she wore in service on the N&W. And to my knowledge, it's back on 611.
Not quite. Former N&W engineer passed away, and donated another J class whistle to the 611 guys. I believe the other is the one from 608, but don't quote me.

The whistle currently on the 611 as of 2023 is not of N&W heritage as per the person who procured the whistle for use on the 611.

The reason why the 611 doesn't have this whistle is because the Claytor family is pissed off about the "The spirit of Roanoke" on the side of the cab.
Why such a big deal over a sticker?
I'm not sure why a sticker was added in the first place. The "Spirit of Roanoke" name itself is terribly inaccurate. Roanoke isn't a ghost town.
Amazing Job yall on having the original 611 whistle on 148.... I had the privilege of riding 611 in 1992 during the Independence Limited Runs and it definitely brings back memories.... Mega Thumbs up yall 👍 👏 👌
Of course they do this AFTER I'm gone, but it was still cool to hear!
It might just be me but I think it sounds more or less like any other step-top Hancock long-bell 3-chime which, don't get me wrong, still sounds good. 611 has a shroud around the whistle that distorts the sound in a unique way, a sound that no other locomotive could produce but the N&W Js, so the only way this whistle could actually sound like 611 is when it's worn by 611 itself.
I think another thing about the whistle here is that it was only running at about 180 psi on 148's boiler compared to the 611's 300, so it didn't play that G major chord like it did in the 90s and instead plays a minor chord. Definitely would be nice to hear it on 611 again.
I guess 148's bell was modified again. It seems to have both an air ringer on the top of the bell and the ringer located on the side.
I suppose it matches the twin beam...

It’s a real shame 611 can’t use her own whistle. Preston Claytor should donate the whistle to VMT. I know he disagreed with certain changes but since she is running, he should make an exception. His dad would have wanted that way.
I honestly thought when 611 was restored for the second time the Claytor Relative would’ve donated it for 611

She Usually wears a Steptop 5 Chime, I forget which rr, but a steptop 5 is her usual whistle
They should have 148 wear a whistle with a distinctive Floridian sound to it... something from the FEC would be good?
