I think the thermostat-no thermostat debate seems very vehicle specific, I've been a fully qualified mechanic for 36 years (in the UK) and seen a lot of over heating problems... obviously. Some vehicles you can just chuck out the thermostat and they'll be fine, others the overheat will get worse. So what I'm saying here is 'whatever works for you' is the right way to go! Great video Chris I'm glad you finally got the title for the Fury.
I went through the rusty block/running hot thing with my 383 as well. I finally did a couple citric acid flushes and that cured it. You HAVE to neutralize it afterward. The shroud might help but that's mostly for low-speed airflow. Your issue was the same as mine, plenty of airflow but not enough heat transfer from the block to the coolant to the radiator to the air. I would ditch that flex fan asap. Not only can they self-destruct, but they turn into a revolving wall of airflow obstruction when they flex straight. Mopar ALWAYS used 7-blade clutch fans on HD cooling applications through the '60's and '70's. I'm pretty sure you shouldn't have ATF inside the speedo cable. That could migrate up the cable into the speedo. There are two o-rings inside the speedo cable adapter on the trans. One large around the outside and one small inside to seal the cable(edit: it seals the steel part of the driven gear). You can buy those kits. Be sure to put the adapter back in the same spot as it was, because it's oblong, so if you put it in differently (rotationally) it can position the driven gear too close to the drive gear and kill the plastic driven gear. Google that, it'll make sense. Last of all, if you have to do any weird stuff to get the trans to shift on time then something with the throttle rod to the trans(that's what Mopar calls it, not a kickdown rod) is out of whack. I would suspect that installation of the Holley EFI as the culprit because there are adjustments that are made to that rod and it's linkages per the FSM. Torqueflites shift nicely once the throttle cable is dialed in.

I concur. The factory clutch fan with steel blades is the best set up to use. Flexi fans are scary dangerous. The other info is spot on too.

I worked on race cars for over a decade, so take this however you like. We ran restrictors rather than thermostats. The restrictor is essentially a stat with the guts removed, it slows the water down enough to get cooled by the radiator, where with a thermostat it's one more part that can fail. Open cooling system ran 20 degrees warmer than a restrictor in our application. I think you should get some radiator/block flush to help get that muck out. Also yes, a shroud is a must have.
The restriction also makes the water pump push a sufficient amount of water through the block and heads.
Unique moments all through the episode but my favorite is finding the channel locks sticking through the floor of the car … ‘I’ve been looking for those!’ . Glad you got the lift but with your style it almost seems like cheating 😎

As for those of us who say that running an engine without a thermostat will actually make an engine run hotter, you just proved us right. When you impeded the flow of water through the radiator with the piece of screen, the engine temp went down to 195. Without a thermostat, the coolant goes through the radiator too fast and does not have enough time to cool. Take the old thermostat and cut the center out of it and install just the outer ring. This should slow down the flow enough to work. A shroud is a must also.

Was wondering when someone would catch on and yep you did, nearly identical setup in my 1965 Fury III factory bb car. for the last 5 years been dropping magnets 6 round ones together in the rad just like you did except i attached one to the end of a metal coat hanger and use it fish out the 6, results look identical to yours... and that was after a machine shop hot tanked the block! 727 is the best auto trans ever made but i upgraded to a 1972 model (out of an Rv paid 150 still pulls hard no rebuild 5 years later) which are the best version. Have a larger front bushing and upgraded valve body. valve bodies on 65 and older are pro to cracking which mine was as well as my brothers. Tried to jb weld, didn't go well so yeah, ditch the old cable driven for a 71 or newer. i installed a B and M star something shifter, adds to the cool factor! Have a 1975 version 727 out of a Jensen i purchased bout 4 years ago. Help me install it and you can have the one that's currently in my car! Can purchase a Mopar Performance Fan Shrouds P2998326 from summ it racing bolted right up to my aluminum rad but different brand than yours. ditch the flex fan for a 6 or 7 blade with clutch and mr gas ket high flow stat and your good to go! I'm calling you out on a head to head best of 3 drag race with Fury! Yeah the Fury's back!

WOW, so much rust! When I worked at a MOPAR dealer, we used Wynn's Products a lot. I particularly loved the cooling system flush. I would buy some for home and run on my own old vehicles, sometimes for n2-3 weeks before flushing out. My cooling system turned out bright shiny brass in the radiator and no overheating anymore.

That D-88 was a staple in every audio studio. It cost thousands back in the day.
The thermostat allows the coolant (water and antifreeze) to stay in the radiator a longer amount of time to cool the overall temperature of the engine to a lower temperature. There is a bypass hose in or near the water pump that allows the coolant to be pumped/circulated in the block till the thermostat opens to allow coolant to flow out to the radiator -- to be held in the radiator for cool-down, then back to the engine as cooled down coolant. The radiator is really a fluid to air intercooler. The thermostat does not fully stay open, it gradually opens a little bit at first, sometimes it goes full open, sometimes it's going full open and full closed to regulate the ideal running temperature of the engine as designed by the factory. I hope this clears things up. So yeah install the correct opening temperature thermostat for that engine. I would also find a factory fan shroud or a later plastic one that will fit correctly.

We put a washer in spot where your thermostat goes in slow the water down. Keep it in the radiator longer to help cool it if you got it open, it blows too fast cool
Purpose of a thermostat in a car is to keep the car in a temperature range. If you take out the thermostat, your car may not warm up fast enough in cold days. So you are right, the car will stay cooler than without one.

The Tascam DA 88 was a professional, digital audio recorder/playback unit in the 1990s. We actually had one running our Electric Nights show at Knott's Berry Farm in the 1990s. It's funny to see how much these old electronics fall in price as the years go by. I got my current laserdisc player for $19 at Goodwill but it retailed new for over a thousand.
Something to consider old cars with verticle flow radiators can benefit from a upper radiator hose coolant filter to prevent clogging from rust
one time while my 396 was hanging from a hoist I pulled the block freeze plugs and used a steam pressure washer and blasted the water jacket and it looked like gravel washing out of the block

I've used CLR to flush out the engine before. It worked very well.
Glad you finally got the title issues figured out on this Fury Wagon and the Chevelle! On the cooling system/no t-stat deal, it can and will most definitely overheat (especially at higher engine speeds) since there is no restriction, as the coolant is flowing into and out of the radiator too quickly to be cooled effectively. How badly (or even if, really) that happens will depend on the radiator size, it's flow capabilities, the pumping ability of the water pump impeller, the overall flow rate of the coolant passages in the block and heads, and the ambient temperature. A fan shroud is a great idea! As you know, they do really help the fan to pull the air through the radiator instead of just buffeting all around under the hood. Also, some folks think that coolant does the job of cooling. Nope. The water in the mixture is the part that actually transfers heat. Coolant raises the boiling point of water, and lubricates the water pump bearings and seals. I wouldn't go much beyond a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water, and lean more towards more water than coolant. And, yes, use distilled water, as it doesn't have any suspended minerals, or at least shouldn't. I have a neighbor whose 79 Ford Van would overheat. The shop who worked on it before I did seemed to have run straight coolant trying to chase down a "running hot" issue. I installed a good quality Stant 180 stat, blew out the radiator fins with compressed air (from the fan side to the grille side), filled it with about a 40% coolant (NAPA Green) and 60% distilled water, and she no longer overheats. Take care, bro, and stay cool!

I got to say I absolutely love that Fury . Although me and you will have to agree to disagree when it comes to thermostats my 68 Roadrunner 440 never ran 210 degrees even with the factory radiator cuz basically that's all I had back then, not like today. Come to think about it when I first tore down that 440 Interceptor engine out of a Florida state trooper car that block was so full of crap I can't believe that the trooper car didn't overheat. I actually boiled that block out with a 50/50 mix of muriatic acid kind of a home remedy hot tank. Thermostats are actually a dual purpose, it helps to let the motor warm up so that your heater works while the radiator is cooling a fresh batch to return to the hot engine. It's like you said if you don't put a thermostat in it never gets hot so your heater would never work until eventually the temperature goes all the way up like it did and there's no way to cool the motor like I said we will have to agree to disagree to each his own doesn't matter anyway I would always show you and Jen respect no matter what as that's the school of teaching that I was raised in. Chris, I have an old Fisher and what you’re referring to the tuning knob being weighted. They do in fact have a round weight on the back.
Seems like there should be an insert inside the connector to guide the pins and push out the housing to help seal.
Yes. Exactly. Like every factory connector ever. I can't believe they made them this way. My guess is maybe they've already updated them. If not they definitely should.

The connectors should be plastic, weatherpack, and the housing should support the pins. Just like on factory stuff. 🤦♂️

Mine came brand new with one injector unplugged. I used some small zip ties and put the clips together. It is super easy took like ten minutes. The prongs on the crossover tube are a little thought to put back. Also use dielectric grease on spark plug wires . I also wired my ignition system to a water proof really. It cleans up the input signal for Efi. Also unpin and extra wires in harness you are not using. Make sure in settings your ac kick down is turned off if you don’t have ac. I also set the IAC too 25% throttle position. This helps when cruising and you let off throttle it will not fall to fast and cause hesitation. Awesome channel! This thing s have worked for my unit all cars are different and your results may vary

I agree with you that the theory that having water pass thru the radiator too quickly causes the engine to run hotter is bunk. The water may not cool as much on each pass thru but it will make more passes thru the radiator, so the net effect is more cooling. I had car that someone had overheated and melted the safety plug in the thermostat housing, allowing lots of water to go around the thermostat. It would never get warm in the winter until I plugged that hole. Also Vice Grip Garage just had a video where he removed the thermostat that was stuck open and it made the engine run cooler.
I’d recommend going to a You pull it or salvage yard and source an over flow tank and hose for that rad
Flex fans are ok for low speeds. The more rpms, the flatter the blades get to lessen the drag. Stock fan and shroud is the best option. Love the channel.

I agree 100% with your theory on thermostats Chris!! I've done the experiment here in (admittedly tropical) Queensland Australia, much like California weather I'm guessing. We get 6 degree Celsius mornings and 39 degree Celsius summers...and my 1970 ute ran perfect with no thermostat and flex fan with OEM shroud. I tried even cutting the centre out of the thermostat so it was a 'restrictor' plate, but no thermo works best. (I would pay the extra to get a brass and copper radiator repaired rather than an alloy one.)
When we raced stock cars running5500 rpm in 1st gear. Aka extream conditions. They did overheat. We found running the ring of the bad thermostat. With the slight restriction worked well. We cut the thermostat off the ring

I am 67 years old i have been playing with cars for 50 years no thermostat runs cooler you need one in colder countries to get the engine up to running temp to save engine wear dont have to worry about it in australia it dosnt get cold enough keep up the good work buddy

And since I literally live across the river from you I always enjoy when you drive through the area seeing the reservoir or other landmark buildings in the background. About 25 years ago I used to plow the abandoned bank on Broad Street you climbed thru. Keep up the good work and hope to run into you at some point!

Amazing that you're a mechanic, but you are a really SMART one. You have a good vocabulary and you know the terms to use to describe what you are seeing. Mechanics in days of lore worked with their bare hands, but guys now a days use these nitrile gloves. I am sure it saves your hands. Great channel, man. The girl can SING!

I love your channel. I had a 1970 Gran Fury Sport. It had the 727 torque flight as well. The filter was very close to the bottom of pan and clogged up a few times. You could drive a few hundred feet, and it would suck the crap up and clog. I would shut the car off for 10 minutes or so and then it would go again. Yeah, it was pretty nasty in that transmission. It took a couple of fluid changes to clear it out. But it ran fine afterward. The car had the 383 magnum. That was 1978.

I would suggest that you stick a water hose on full, open the petcock and let it run while the engine is running. The thermostat will continue to allow the water to heat and cycle the rust out. I would also suggest to you the good old prestone flush for the final flush. I enjoy your show!

Great score on the dumpster, go price strut and heavy wall 3/4" conduit, don't sell yourself cheap if you flip it.
Should have waited for the end. Treasure in the dumpster, goodyear hose is the best, used it at the printing plant. Not to mention all the hose end fitings, new ones are junk. happy hunting, ask that guy if he has any rubber stop balls for the hose reels.
I took the thermostat out of my c10 w/406ci sbc street/strip deal and on the highway after only a few minutes of driving it over heated, went with 160° high flow stat no over heating!

What can i say that others haven't, great channel!!! I've binged on your episodes in the last 24 hours, love The Fury (i own a 69 440 notch back Baracuda, currently doing a front disk brake swap) The Gran Torino is just too fricken cool, what a great trip for all 3 of you....Jen and Gus rock!!! The boat.....well...all the power to you, i've hauled two to the dump, salvaged what i could and called it a break even on both. BOAT = bust out another thousand lol. Love to see you do an old truck, i have a 53 GMC currently with a 327 4 speed but with plans of swapping in a 03 LS 5.3 ...
Oh, and one other thing, i have to say i smiled when i saw all that snow in your Fury episodes.... aaaaaahhhhhh.... someone who understands what a lot of us northern car guys face.....

Yes, it is a common misconception that slowing down your cooling system improves performance.
It is true that slowing down the flow rate will cause the outlet coolant to be cooler, however, that's not the entire picture. What you really care about is heat rejection. Temperature drop is only one of the variables that dictates heat rejection. We also need to consider flow rate.
The equation for heat transfer is Q (Heat) = m (mass flow rate) x C (specific heat capacity) x Delta T (change in temperature).
A higher flow rate will always more than make up for the smaller change in temperature you'll see by adding a restriction to the cooling loop.

by fitting a thermostat it allows the water in the radiator a chance to cool longer by slowing the water flow through the engine... hence making the engine run cooler.. try it you will be surprised.
