Grimbold was an incredible tactician and tolkien seems to surprise me more and more with his knowledge of everything from fantasy fiction to military tactics of the real world
Tolkien was very into Anglo Saxon history, literature and the warfare surrounding this. Therefore a fair number of his stories are based on the sagas such as Beowulf and the Viking sagas and the warfare of the time. For example there's a lot of references to shieldwalls such as on the Pelennor and book Gondor armour is actually best described as early Medieval/late migration age rather than the late Medieval/early Renaissance that the films show. It's also why Rohan and Gondors muster are described as being groups of retainers/levies led by their chief rather than necessarily the state army or mercenaries of the late Medieval period.
All these points are spot on. Besides the stupid "knows what not to do" comment. He certainly was an officer during the Great War but he was a scholar mostly. Interestingly the beginning of this battle is similar to one that was fought against the early Saxons and Welsh (but on foot). I believe that he based the foundations on actual events or at least had inspiration from them. Also we need to remember the heroism of the officers that led soldiers during the great war itself..and dispell the myth of 'lions led by donkeys'. Over 98 British Generals were killed in combat. So the medieval notion of a king or general riding ahead of his men into battle may well have been seen by Tolkien during the war.
Kings and Generals, and Wizards and Warriors, y'all are outdoing yourselves with the content! Beautiful cinematics and graphics! Keep up the great work
What I like about series like this is you can clearly see the differences with their TV or movie adaptations and the characters that were neglected in the adaptations.
Actually in the books, Theoden was going to help the forces at Isen, but Gandalf advised in before they got there to go to Helm’s Deep. The civilians of Edoras went to Dunharrow.
Damn, Grimbold battles his way through an enemy army to try to get to Theodred, only to see him get chopped down and find himself in the same horrifying situation!
One thing in the books gandalf and Théoden decided that holding Helm's deep is the best course of action for several reasons, Rohan is in weakened state and it would take time to rally it riders. Helm's deep is the best option that they had at the time The movie change gandalf opinion for some reason, likely to make him seem wise due to Saruman dark arts (read gunpowder)
Rohan suffered a lot from the war of the ring. Its king, Théoden, was killed in battle as well. However, the rohirrim resisted against the dark lord, which shows their loyalty towards their kingdom.
I'm thoroughly enjoying the series on the War of the Ring. The differences between the books and the movies is really telling. I had no idea that Eomer was at Helm's Deep and it was Erkenbrand that rode to lift the siege.
This is so good that you're making me rethink the lore! Those who say the Balrogs did not have real wings point to the fact that the Balrog WALKED to Durin's tower up the endless stair, rather than flying. But it never hit me until your video that the Balrog had just fallen into ICY water. Perhaps his wings of fire, if they were real, were temporarily snuffed, not allowing the wings to work. (It's also possible that the Balrogs are like swifts or other birds that CAN fly, but can't take off from the ground, who need a large cliff or tree to jump from. That would make the Balrog's ascent up the stairs actually make MORE sense--perhaps he was going to jump and fly off before Gandalf kicked his ass.)
1. 12:19 not technically right “If the invasion of Westfold had begun five days earlier, there can be little doubt that the reinforcements from Edoras would never have come near Helm's Deep, but would have been surrounded and overwhelmed in the open plain; if indeed Edoras had not itself been attacked and captured before the arrival of Gandalf. It has been said that the valour of Grimbold and Elfhelm contributed to Saruman's delay, which proved disastrous for him. The above account perhaps underestimates its importance.” - Unfinished Tales, "The Battles of the Fords of Isen" 2. 10:27 “Erkenbrand, previously retired from service” Source? 3. 17:46 In the book, Théoden wants to fight “While Théoden was speaking, Gandalf rode a short way ahead, and he sat there alone, gazing north to Isengard and west to the setting sun. Now he came back. 'Ride, Théoden!' he said. 'Ride to Helm's Deep! Go not to the Fords of Isen, and do not tarry in the plain! I must leave you for a while. Shadowfax must bear me now on a swift errand.' Turning to Aragorn and Éomer and the men of the king's household, he cried: 'Keep well the Lord of the Mark, till I return. Await me at Helm's Gate! Farewell!'” - The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers, "Helm’s Deep"
Also, Isengard's forces retreated once Theodred was killed, since these were commands of Saruman. If the army pressed their advance then, Rohan would be overun.
yeah, number 3 I was like huh, Theoden rides out with his full force to reinforce the ford only to be met by some survivors fleeing to Edoras, then Gandalf says as you have quoted.
Excellent video! I admit I had a hard time understanding the Battles of the Fords of Isen and your video helped. A battle I would like to see is the Battle of the Isle of the Dead, where Phoenix King Aenarion the Defender and his friend Caledor the Dragontamer led the entire Asur (High Elf) host in their victory over the deamons.

The coolest part about Gandalf fighting the Balrog at the highest point in Durins tower, is that he followed the balrog from FAR deeper than the Dwarves ever dug. The entrance to Durins tower and the endless stairs were almost a myth among the Dwarves, but Gandalf managed to make it there over the course of several days and the Balrog RAN AWAY FROM HIM until it literally no longer could!
Amazing stuff, would love to see some of the battles from “the storm light archives” covered the Plateau runs they go on are an interesting way of war.

Seeing as how you are so close to Helms Deep, why not check out another analysis of the battle in question? The blog "A Collection of Unmitigated Pendantry" is run by a professor of military history and he has undertaken to do a deep dive into the battle. He has also done the battle of Minas Tirith. A multi-part evaluation of the battle, the players involved and the overall conclusion with comparing the novels to the film. I recommend it as it provides surprising intel on just what Tolkien himself was writing when he did the Battle of Helms Deep.
@9:15 Rohirrim charge saves… the Rohirrim. I feel like while Gondor is on the decline, the Rohirrim are fighting valiantly against the forces of evil, but honestly it may only appear like this on a vestigial level because Gondor was on the decline for centuries.
Please do the 1897 war between the Martian tripods and the British Army/Navy, as described by H G Wells. The book is a narrative and the path of the battle is easy to follow using a map of London and the Home Counties, especially as most of the places mentioned are real places.
Nice video I enjoyed, though your events with Theoden decision to go to Helms deep is on the movie and not the books, which you have based the events of the video on. Unlike in the movie, in the book Theoden heeded Gandalf words and was in favour of marching against Saruman directly and took up his sword, and led the Riders of Rohan to the Fords of Isen, against Saruman. However on their way to the Ford of Isen, they received news that the border was lost and he retreated into Helm's Deep, that is when Gandalf spilt from them and went to search for Erkenbrand and the scattered forces of the Westfold, which he later found and led to the Deep,

The high point of the video for me is when they're taking the hobits to Isengard and when I was left wondering where is Gandlaf for I much desired to speak with him.
Please cover the Exosquad
I have been looking for good knives and after seeing the ad I went qnd got a set. Looking forward to trying them out and updating this comment. Love the content, please keep it up and shower me with LotR and Warhammer lore.
I know i am four months late but i hope you didnt buy the cheap trash they advertised. its cheep steal that does not retain an edge and you are better of getting a dollar store knife. They advertise trying to use the hype of "Traditional Japanese steel folded a million times" when its a scam.
@@JonaRosalinaRose oh I very much got the three knife set. Thankfully I don't use them a ton anyway so they have been working for the past couple months well enough I can't complain too much about them plus I shopped with Honey so I got a deal for them. However I wish the quality was better for my piece of mind and the cost
I appreciate the following of books narrative rather than the film.
Really wished Theodred would have had a few scenes in the movie. I didn't even know he was a badass until I experienced him in LOTR Online.
Great video as usual. Keep them coming!
Hello wizzards&warriors , i have a question for you. I know you are running multiple storyes , but at some point you will cover the wheel of time ?
We will!
I'm anxious to see Helm's Deep.
Great video, love the artwork and production
@9:15 Rohirrim charge saves… the Rohirrim.
I feel like while Gondor is on the decline, the Rohirrim are fighting valiantly against the forces of evil, but honestly it may only appear like this on a vestigial level because Gondor was on the decline for centuries.
Please do the 1897 war between the Martian tripods and the British Army/Navy, as described by H G Wells. The book is a narrative and the path of the battle is easy to follow using a map of London and the Home Counties, especially as most of the places mentioned are real places.
Love these videos, can you do the battles & stories from the Warcraft Universe?
The art is beautiful!
However on their way to the Ford of Isen, they received news that the border was lost and he retreated into Helm's Deep, that is when Gandalf spilt from them and went to search for Erkenbrand and the scattered forces of the Westfold, which he later found and led to the Deep,
Please make more frequent videos about Warhammer fantasy specially the empire and grand Cathay
