After Selling my 1986 Honda XL250R to my buddy Jason, I film as he disassembles the motor and preps it for new rings and installs a Heli Coil.

Okay that little tip at 7:56 to use the wrench inside the socket to remove those 2 bolts was EPIC! I just did it on mine and I'm not gonna lie I can't believe it worked. Thanks for saving me a huge headache! 🤘
Nice, glad it helped!
Thanks Ben ,my son is currently doing a rebuild in a 87 250 xr,looks like the same engine.
Oh yeah? Nice! Yep, I think just the crank and something else... is different, otherwise they are identical.
First, great video that has given me inspiration to tackle my '86. One thing I'm questioning is the comments starting at about 12:00 regarding how far the holes go without threads. On my bike, front has an 81mm bolt with 25mm of thread at the end. The bolt goes about 47mm into the jug. This means that the first 22 mm should not have threads in the first place and putting any thread repair higher won't matter once the bolt is fully in. Likewise, on the previous repair (rider's left, with helicoil right at the top), that's an 81mm bolt that goes 38mm into the jug, meaning the first 13mm need not have threads (38 minus the 25mm of thread that bolt has). Aside from the 4 skinny bolts by the cam chain, all threads are recessed below the head surface, some deeply, and it varies from bolt to bolt (further complicated that two of the bolts are 72mm, with 30mm of thread). Thoughts on all of this?
Got my trail sticker, I'm good to go. Just need warm weather.
Looks like it's supposed to be in the 60s next weekend. Hopefully they open the trails!
Love these videos so much man. All you stuff is great, but this stuff is like guided meditation, lol.
Haha, thanks Island ADV! I'm glad you like them.
Great video
Congrats on the new bike, Jason! Nice work. The top end of my XT200 will not come off with the engine in the frame; have to take the engine out. Which mine is currently out to put a big bore kit in. Looking forward to seeing you both ride together.
Yeah not having to remove the whole thing is a time saver. Nice! What does the big bore get you to cc wise?
@@SwankyCatProductions with the larger piston and different crank it makes it a 225 cc.
Nice! I need to get ahold of something else now that I sold my XL to Jason but can't find anything that's not way over priced.
Honda XR Exausts fit it I’m pretty sure
Where did you get your piston rings? im only finding Weisco rings that are for an oversized cylinder like 75mm,76, i think stock is like 73
Catman you broke a major rule!! Never invite an A mechanic into your garage, you bring your shit to his garage. Its like inviting Brad Pitt to your wedding! you wont end up in one single picture 🤣
Haha, I wish this was my garage! Mines only a 2 car with cinder block walls and no windows.
@@SwankyCatProductions lol I take that back Good job 😎
Haha thanks!
It's a good job! Do these motors run noisy even at low miles? What was the compression test before the ring install Bill
Stub down and decrease everything first. Or just blow it up ! Thank you bill
Haha
whats the intake space for the tappets and whats the outtake for them please the distance between them if tnhat makes sense
That headbolt stripped on mine also. Very common.
Really? Huh interesting. Now I don't feel so bad haha.
What size helicoil are yall using im having the same problem
@@chaseburlison1003 hmm...i can try to find the paperwork from having mine professionally repaired. If I find it I'll let you know.
I bought an 86 XL 250 can I get parts still?
@@joshuabowen6598 not sure.
anyone know where i can get the service manual/info and torque specs needed to do the top end of one of these?
is the intake 0.2 and exhauste 0.4
How do uk now how stuff goes back together ?Do u have a Manuel?🤘🇬🇧
When I did this a few years ago I did not have one Jason does though.
That's the fanciest helicoil setter I ever did see
