    I have heard back from Hahnemühle and wanted to add as several of you have mentioned that Turner IS internally sized, just not externally sized.

    i love hanehmuhle papers.. specially their turner paper.. heres some tips in using turner watercolor paper. one of the greatest advantage of turner paper over the cezzane paper is that it is not surfaced sized which means colors will flow better and granulation will look better. i always start with very lose undertone then gradually adding colors, surfaced sized papers normally dont held up much layers, but believe me, i can layer up to 10 times with this paper and its really gorgeous. you can get really deep colors and those loose and granulating undertones just laminates and pop out.

    Finally I discovered this video. Thank you so much, Denise. Especially for comparing Hahnemühle with Arches and Canson XL and for recommending Cezanne, which I never used before but I definitely will. I live in Germany and learn and love to watercolor with you, Sadie, Steve, Teoh, Kimberly, Louise and Oto. Because I think, that for environmently reasons, material should not be shipped around the world, if not necessary, I always look for European or even German products, which are good to use and to learn and I can definitely not buy everything that comes to my hands only to find out that it isn't useful. So I have to learn the brands and where they are from (finetec and coliro are from Germany, caran d'ache from the nearby Switzerland, Da Vinci could be from Germany, if you think of brushes, but is not, if you want to buy Denise's colors) and all their products, which are often great and you definitely do not have to ship around the globe.
    By the way for environmental reasons: did you know that Hahnemühle has a new paper from agaves (!) which is made especially for watercolor use (not only mixed media as the bamboo, which I also love).

    Thank you for introducing bamboo paper. Never even heard of bamboo watercolor paper before. Love how vibrant & well defined the paper with sizing shows up paint. Thank you for also commenting on how the flow of paints are on each paper, it's super useful information that most don't mention. Only you with all your expertise can!

    I use the bamboo paper. Really like it for all kind of watercolour, ink and ink and wash. Love the semi smooth surface. Bought some large sheets (70x100cm) and I'm happy as Larry. The Hahnenmühle WC sketchbooks are also a joy to use. Will try Cezanne soon. Thanks for posting the review. Oh and I really like that the bamboo paper is more eco friendly. 👍

    I prefer using unsized paper with gouache because it looks really good and smooth! The paint is absorbed more so it's easier to handle and the strange texture is hidden by the opacity

      Oo, thanks for the tip! I have some new gouache so perhaps I'll try the Turner with that :)

    hahnemühle is pretty affordable here in sweden! a lot cheaper than arches, at any rate. great info for me in this video seeing as it's one of the brands i can get at my local artstore, which i might do in the future when i've run out of the off-brand watercolor papers i've already got :)

    Thank you for yet another wonderfully informative video. I feel like I say that with each of your supply review videos, LOL! I can assure you, this is a response formulated only after watching the video in its entirety, not a predetermined comment posted before the introduction has finished, LOL. There were so many details about each individual paper, many of which I hadn’t heard about in any other review video. Potentially rivals Arches? You definitely left me hoping to try this paper if I ever get the chance. Hopefully with time it will become a little less cost prohibitive. I’ve heard other reviews indicating the Cézanne paper was the reviewer’s preference, but I don’t recall anybody suggesting the reason was merely the sizing. The fact that you tailored your paint choices and style to the individual paper goes to show the professionalism one can find in your review videos. I feel this is your best review yet! Kudos and well done!

      ❤❤❤ Thank you for the kind words Heather! That means so much to me. The more reviews I do, the less comfortable I am with posting "first impressions" because I often change my opinion of a product one way or another after using it for some time. This one falls somewhere in between since I haven't had them a super long time, but I did spend a few weeks with them before forming my thoughts and I'm so glad that that's apparent :)

    Thanks for the thorough review Denise! I love the paper personally, but my only tests so far have been Leonardo 300 lb. CP and Cezanne 140 lb. HP and they were both awesome. I was interested in what you learned about sizing though. I thought all along that Turner was internally sized just not surface sized but sounds like I have that wrong. Its pretty unusual for a watercolor paper to have no sizing whatsoever. Like you, I found it difficult to get info online. My belief has always been that surface sizing is added in addition to internal sizing for an easier lifting paper. So learned something new. I've painted on unsized handmade cotton paper and I am NOT a fan. 🙂

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 років тому +4

      Hmm, perhaps I am incorrect then! I was going off what information I found online and what I thought I found out via emails, but perhaps I didn't get all the information. There was never any correspondence from the company about internal sizing, so that is the first I'm hearing of it, and I'm no sizing expert. The Cezanne does specifically say "surface" sized so perhaps they're both internally sized? My apologies if I gave the wrong impression! Regardless, I do agree with you that I love the Cezanne. I haven't tried the Leonardo, but I imagine it's pretty dreamy!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor 6 років тому +6

      I'm no sizing expert either. Its something I wish I knew more about. You got better info than I had. I will offer this. After my last comment I went and cut a sample piece of Turner (which I had not used yet) and put down some washes. I was able to lift Ultramarine after the washes were dry. Seems there is some degree of sizing in there. But who knows. My only other experience with unsized paper was like painting with indelible markers. Ouch! I'm thankful for your info. Its always good to hear what others have found out and your thorough approach is always appreciated. I'm sure paper companies must hold their formulas close to the vest. Arches tried and true formula is probably a heavily guarded secret. 😀

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Steve! I did notice that I could lift a bit on the Turner as well. I took a picture but I think I forgot to put it in the video! I sent an email to my contact and will be sure to let you know what I hear, but I suspect you are right about the internal sizing :)

    You should try out their anniversary edition paper. I think the paper is 425gsm and is totally my favorite. It’s really good to you that paper when you know you are gonna use a lot of water and it doesn’t bend at all (at least in the block format). They also have an 450gsm paper but I never used so I can’t comment on that but I would like to see you trying out if you could.

    Love your review, so thoroughly done, and I love your animal paintings, they are lovely! Thank you so much for this video, very nice to see all these papers and watch you paint on them. I am very happy that you like the Hahnemühle, and that you also enjoyed the Bamboo paper. I have not tried the other papers, I only use the Bamboo, and Britannia ("student" paper). They are very affordable here where I live in the north of Scandinavia. But now I am curious to try the Cézanne, which is pricier, since it is 100% cotton. Oh, your squid, it is beautiful! It looks like a semi prescious gem stone, like white opal : ) Very nice to watch your video! : )

    What a coincidence! I just got the 10 page blocks Hahnemühle Cézanne HP and CP (both 300g/m2 | 140 lbs | 100% cotton rag) the other day to try. I’m a beginner trying to find out if I like watercolor painting 🎨 and I didn’t know if I would like HP or CP so I got them both. I love Hahnemühle. They sell sample packs in Germany where you get one sheet of their main papers. Some of them are really thick (about 400 lbs), some are super textured (like their rough Cornwall). There's something for everyone.
    Btw: I feel like watercolour papers in Germany tend to be rougher than they are in Canada. Even the smooth papers from German manufacturers tend to be more textured than their North American counterparts.

    As always, such a great review! I love this brand and wish I'd bought more of it when I first ordered (ran out some time ago). I bought a ton of Arches and Legion, so I can't justify buying more at this point. The best info here, for me, though is about the unsized paper. Never tried that! Not sure what internally sized is like, so it's good to hear your feedback on how it felt. Thank you so much, Denise! Great work, again! Cheers! :)

      @MDCampbell 6 років тому +1

      I was going to do a review of the Legion, but just haven't gotten to it yet. I used their hotpress paper and just love it. I especially love that it's _white_ and not _off-white_ like the Arches hotpress that I have. Of course, I rarely use it because I'm one of those people who has a hangup about using good paper. I don't know why. I think it's a phobia, but I haven't figured out which one... Papyrophobia, maybe? lol!!! And thank you so much about my channel. It's been a bit overwhelming trying to keep up with the comments and replies. lol! Cheers!!!

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  6 років тому

      I've heard Arches is just awful for HP, which may explain why I didn't like it at all! I don't have much experience with other brands, but I like my CP so I'll just stick with that haha! I definitely worry about wasting good paper - it's so hard to find a balance. I totally understand about trying to keep up! About 12-13k is where I lost control, but I have never had a 4k boost all at once, so I can only imagine the relative increase you're going through. It's so hard to keep up, but a sign of great success. Keep on keeping on, friend!

    Yeah, and here I was agonizing, which watercolor cotton paper is worth to skipp a meal. I should have known by now, that there has to a local company (I live in Germany) that produces high end stuff, on par (or close enough) with the best ones. Afterall, I DO own Horadam watercolors and Aerocolor professional acrylic inks by Schmincke, Polychromo and Albrecht Dürrer pencils by Faber-Castell and all my watercolor brushes, from synthetic to Kolinsky, are from DaVinci. I should go more often to my local art store, they are stuffed with Hahnemühle and other german brands, to the brim.

    I'm honestly sad that I didn't like the Bamboo paper as much as I thought I would. My painting style uses a lot of dark, muted colors, and the paper keeps absorbing it and making it extremely pale, removing any sort of contrast. I bought it while I was in Germany, so thankfully it was at its cheapest (shipping to Asia is...) but even coming back to it after 2+ years, I still couldn't find myself enjoying the way it eats up my paint at all. Given everyone else's reviews, though, I wonder if it's just me.
    That being said, I liked the other papers from the brand, and I do have their Selection pad lying around for me to try... Thanks for the great video, I've been binging them and they bring me a lot of joy!

    Great video, as always, Denise. :) It is good that you liked the paper and that another alternative to Arches and the like exists, especially in areas where Arches might be expensive or difficult to obtain. Competition between brands is very important because it prevents a monopoly on the paper industry and prevents companies becoming complacent. Good competition is always good for the price of paper too.
    Hahnemühle was very popular with artists when I lived in Austria and was very good value but I have not seen it for sale here in Ireland in any art shops. It would have to be ordered from the UK or Germany, I guess.
    Regarding the sizing of the Turner paper, you're quite right that there is not much information available on their website. I checked the English and German versions and neither provide clarity. Thanks for checking with Hahnemühle HQ for us. :)

    Hahnemühle actually sells paper samples in a pad, I think its called Hahnemühle selection. So if someone here isn't sure which paper suits him best it is worth a try. Also it comes with a pretty good description of the paper, so you can think about how you should paint beforehand. I mean having only one sheet of a paper is still not really enough to form a good opinion. :)

    Ah, so this is why you were doing research on sizing! Very cool!
    What’s interesting is, actually, I don’t really like arches paper very much. The couple of times I’ve used it I’ve been kinda meh, so I’m not sure how I should gauge this on my own scale since you said you might even like it more than arches! Does that mean I’d like it more? I’d like it less? I don’t know! =>.

      Haha interesting about the Arches/Cezanne comparison! I don't know what to expect - though I do think you'd like the Bamboo! The front and back feel different to me but the edges can also tell you. When they're cut, it creates the slightly rounded surface on top while the back has the harder edge if that makes sense.

    I find that the akademie line of papers (veneto, britannia, etc) spread my paint a lot more than cezanne does. Hahnemuhle 300 and turner does the same for me. Actually I find it kind of hard to control (I'm using van gogh and rembrandt watercolors) . Cezanne handles much like Arches to me. Hahnemuhle 300 is sold here in Brazil as 100% wood pulp; much like Canson Vidalon, both are the entry point in artist grade paper.
    Regarding price range , it starts the same as Canson Montval up to between 60% and 70% of Canson Heritage or Arches. The only 100% cotton alternative cheaper than Cezanne is Clairefontaine Fontaine.

      I specifically asked since the Hahnemuhle didn't say cotton on it and my contact I said it was 100% cotton. Seem's like I wasn't the only one who was confused though!

    • @diegogval
      @diegogval 6 років тому

      yeah, It was kinda confusing because It is sold here as being made from 100% Alpha cellulose, not market as 100% cotton. I understand cotton has a high content of Alpha cellulose, but It is not the only one. Nonetheless, I feel it's a wonderful paper for the price in my region.

    I‘m in love with Hahnemühle paper. They are based in Germany, that’s why their paper is sold in every art store here in Germany. Here, they are more affordable than other good brands. Funnily enough, I recently came across filter paper from them in the lab :D

    Thank you so much for this amazing review once again! I'm sad this paper isn't easily available where I live, I would love to try that bamboo and cézanne! How does the Turner compares to the Bee Creative Watercolor Journal? If I recall correctly, you found the sizing to be lacking in that paper and I wonder if they handles similarly. Thank you!

    You mention "speckling" during the Comaprison chapter. By this do you mean a sort of white speckling, as if the paint is not settling on portions of the paper? If so, I've found Arches to be especially bad. So much so that I had to completely redo a dot card swatching because it just made every color look absolutely terrible. Canson Heritage and St Cuthberts Mill: Saunders Waterford on the other hand, amazing.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  Рік тому +1

      Yes, I believe there was a certain time frame when many people had issues with the sizing in Arches so there might have been a QA issue. However, I generally do not have issues with my supply (almost eight years). I use it the most because it is affordable and accessible where I live.
      However, I do continually have problems with Mission Gold and more recently Paul Rubens on Arches when I don't see it with other brands of paint, so it's not exclusively Arches' problem - paint formulas also impact the issue. I also had issues with Strathmore 500 speckling with many brands of paint. Just gotta know know supplies and how they interact with each other!

    • @mnap1595
      @mnap1595 Рік тому

      @@InLiquidColor Thanks for the response! It may still be an issue, as these sheets of Arches were purchased in the last six months. Of course, it's impossible to know when the distributor purchased it. In my case, I noticed it with any paint I used: Daniel Smith, Da Vinci, M Graham, Holbein, and Schmincke. I'm just glad I noticed it somewhat early on and verified with other paints against other papers, so I didn't waste any more time.

      Hmm, I'm not sure. It seeps out more, but the color isn't as bright. Honestly there's still a lot of flow on the Cezanne, plus you get the vibrancy of the color :)

    I had once Hahnemuhle Cornwall paper ...and it was great paper to paint on ...unless you tried to use masking fluid or a tape to fix it to a board. The paper does not take it well. But I decided to give Hahnemuhle a second chance and bought Leonardo. And the same ...great to paint on but stay away frommasking fluid or tapes. Shame. And now I wonder how it is in Cezanne case?

    oh my god, that unsized paper gave me an anxiety attact, it's so horrible. I haven't tried Arches, but so far I haven't seen anything perform like it, at least from the videos on youtube. I did buy their Andalucia paper and although it feels good in the hand and the texture looks nice, it's soaks up the colors and they end up looking lifeless... Not sure if I should try any other of their papers.

    I do not get along well with the Hahnemühle papers because they have a worse sizing than other papers.

      I have tested about 6 papers and after a little more than a little wet in wet, all broke the surface.
      That's years ago, I do not know which papers exactly.
      The papers are relatively expensive, so I tested them before and then took something else.
