Absolutely BEYOND incredible singing! When the QUEEN was at her all time highest of high musical moments (of which she had MANY!)!
She went to a D#6 instead of F#6 at 6:57, and only went to a D6, instead of F#6 at 8:33, and omitted some other high notes at some point.
Stunning.
This piece wasn't difficult enough for her so, you know, she tackled the unedited version with some high Gs for good measure. Beast! Love her. She sends Strauss packing.
High F# there's no G6 in the score in either version
And she didn’t have the F#6 in her range. The coloraturas are perfect, though.
@@Yotam1703 , no, il Fa c'è lo aveva. Se canti Astrifiammante in tono almeno il Fa diesis lo devi avere.
@@fabriziogarzi9892 she left some of the high notes out at the end. She said in an interview the conductor demanded she do it in the original key. She said she couldn't do it. He did not look pleased at the end with her omissions and she herself couldn't look Leinsdorf in the eye. I play with many conductors in orchestras and can tell very easily....even as a child Beverly could only vocalize to a G. That would mean Eb and E natural were the top notes she could count on. Beautiful sound and musicality though!
At the end, the conductor was exhausted - Beverly wasn't a bit flustered.
Beverly 's birth name was Belle Miriam Silverman.
So calm, so intelligent, and beautiful singing! I'm sure she'd be the first to admit this isn't really her piece. But boy! Incredible~!
No, this is her piece, the way her voice actually was schooled.
When/why would a solo vocalist(s) be placed behind the orchestra rather than in front, alongside the conductor?
Wow! Is this an original version (uncut)? It's longer and with longer coloratura passages than the ones I'm used to.
The 1912 version is longer and higher!
@@vinc1774 And it includes even higher notes which Sills didn't sing. One can wonder why she chose to sing this version if she didn't have the required notes.
@@Feisenbach She didn't choose to sing this version; the conductor did. She came in thinking she was going to be singing the 1916 version but was surprised to find out she was going to have to sing the 1912 edition.
@@andychen7390 Really? This doesn't sound like sight reading...?
@@Feisenbach Oh no, this concert wasn't the first time she saw the score! She of course rehearsed but prior to rehearsals, she thought she was going to be singing the 1916 version. If I can find the interview where she talked about it, I'll link it.

I couldn't have expressed it better myself!
This concert performance of the 1912 "Ariadne" was brought to Carnegie Hall on January 19, 1969 and was among the most memorable concerts I've ever seen, due in large measure to Sills amazing Zerbinetta. Possibly her greatest performances ever. My memory (I know it was over 50 years ago) is that it was even better than this. I unfortunately missed the original telecast on PBS and have been hoping it would show up on you tube. I'm happy for this, but does anyone have the complete performance they can post?
La versione completa esiste. Era in vendita su DVD e ogni tanto appare su youtube.
Stupendous !!! Is there a a video of the whole opera (1912 version) available somewhere ?
Yes, the entire concert (complete opera, unstaged) is available on DVD.
Absolutely amazing! #Bubbles
Sills = perfección!!!
Kick behind coloratura soprano, as always unbeliavable!
Weich Version is this?
Who sang the part of the Composer?
This is no Composer in the 1912 version as that character only appears in the prologue and this version has no prologue; it's mostly spoken dialogue from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme.
So the 1912 version was not the actual Strauss opera?
@@alicenelson3866 It just didn't have the prologue yet.
Oh, my. So many things wrong. She was so lovely and the very top! A flute; seems to be a "natural" thing. She never actually supported the way an Olympic singer has to. Pitch in middle, upper middle, lower middle often not in the center; splattered tones everywhere. And such a lounge-singer approach too often. But sometimes...sublime!
She never wanted for a job after 1966. so she must have done something right. Could any of us do better? It's great singing. un matched.
@@fourniturev Oh, yes, I imagine she had to turn down many, many jobs. She did many things "right" as well as possessing a phenomenal instrument and brain. However, her singing certainly was matched and exceeded by others with stronger technique. I think you may have misunderstood me; I loved her!
@@josephcollins6033you're not wrong
@@tamerlano Wow. Sitting here with a glass of wine, watching a Midsomer Murder! You have blown me away. Thank you. I rarely have someone here agree with me! Thanks, forever!
@@josephcollins6033 it's ok to love a singer and point out their flaws. Sills could be wonderful and was very smart but the voice had it's limits. That being said, doing a few performances only of such a demanding role must have been nerve-wracking. She writes in her book that she struggled with the high f sharps and that the part was a little too high for her.
