I think zordmaker will agree that the term red rattler was a media beat up from the ,,,80s that only caught on on the 90s. Although used in 60s in Melbourne for Tait trains after media campaign to disparage the 1909 designed Taits. Caught on more in Melbourne.
The Tullochs (after all, thats what you're referring to) aren't actually "rattlers", they were the first generation of DD cars. Being trailers they were used in combination with the red sets for many years prior to the single deckers' withdrawal.
@zordmaker The Tullochs were my FAVOURITE trains as a kid, and i remember towards the end of their days they used to use both the tullochs and the comengs as part of the one train and i'd always run for the tullochs! Open windows, old feel to it, it had character - as did the sexy rattlers i grew up with.
there are some red rattlers that can be seen from the train window between redfern and macdonaldtown, in the enmore yards... now they are all rusting away lol

Agreed. It wasn't in wide usage in Sydney until the early 1990s.
I used to lived near the Tullochs Railway Workshops in Rhodes NSW. I lived at Concord NSW only a few kilometers away where it all started.

the red rattlers where great fun to ride on couldnt have them now days just think of what would happen with todays youth.
They actually sold most of the carriages to private buyers for as sheds, motel rooms, etc.
That smooth silver is still running, so much for the new Oscars that were promised, like the tangara only a few delivered
