Hi Tony! What an interesting and varied episode! Nice to see you still adding extra baseboard to such a long standing and well established layout! Makes me feel better knowing what plans I have looking forward! Can't wait to see what you dream up to add to it now that the new track to the TMD is installed! Making room for the signal box looked like incredibly hard work, but the end results were definitely worth it! I'm only four months behind now, and have enjoyed playing catchup so far! All the best, Ian.

Glad you enjoyed the video Ian. the extra spur saves the long winded way round into the M.P.D. especially trains coming in from the branch line. thanks again for watching all the best Tony.

Hi Tony, you’re not kidding a model railway is a journey of a lifetime! Mine will take forever although that’s the point to me , no pun intended!
I love episodes like this and the development of that area that you’ve created, looking forward to how the rest of it turns out.
The nerve centre is amazing, so many wires! One day there will be a wireless point I’m sure but I think the wire manufacturers are safe for now.
Made some progress yesterday at Exehaven which I’m really happy about, and should be in next weeks episode, cheers Tony, John

Good morning John. i agree, that's what we signed up for when we started these layouts. and we just can not seem to find the light at the end of the build. i am guessing that we don't want to find the light. because we don't want the journey to end. as we are enjoying the hobby to much. Take care my friend. cheer's Tony.

You’ve got it spot on Tony, I decided to build such a big layout for my retirement and although I have my golf I needed something else. I enjoy what it brings me from the point of view of keeping my brain ticking over and also from a creative point of view. I don’t really want the layout to finish although I hope it will get to a point where it looks done to those who come to see it.
      Have a good week mate👍

Hi Tony. I agree that the signal box is in a much better position now. You really had your work cut out for you with that scenery that required removing. The new trackwork addition will add more interest as well as giving the locos in the shed a forward way out. I was pleased that you started calling the ‘point’ a turnout, which is the correct technical term, the latter is only used in the UK model railway community.
As I know you like to hear my ramblings, here is this weeks.
The colloquial term ‘point’ refers to what is technically known as a ‘switch’ or ‘tongue’ rail. A standard turnout, called that because it facilitates the loco or train to ‘turnout’ from the main line to a diverging line, has two or a ‘set’ of 'points'. When the signalman changes the points, he is actually moving the pair of switch rails from main to diverging or vice versa, within a single turnout. A turnout is sometimes colloquially referred to as a 'set of points', not a 'point'.
The Permanent Way Department refers to the formation as a ‘turnout’, however, turnouts, slips and diamonds, are generally known as ‘S&C work’ (Switches & Crossings), as the railway consists of switches and crossings connected by standard rail.
A turnout is made in three sections. A ‘switch panel’, a ‘closure panel’ and a ‘crossing panel’. The term ‘frog’ is American, from the days of the Iron Horse, said to be when they noticed that the crossing V was like the V formation at the base of a horse’s hoof, called in the US and in the UK, as a frog. The UK term, other than in model railway circles, is a ‘common crossing’. The switch panel and crossing panels are assembled on site together with the closure panel which goes between the two S&C panels.
Diamonds have two common crossings and two obtuse crossings (unless a switched diamonds, in which case the obtuse crossings are replaced with four switches), all fabricated in separate panels for assembly on site.
So ends the ramblings of the day. I hope you and maybe others, found them of interest. Best, Jason.

Good evening Jason my friend. the signal box where it is now adds more interest. and not only that you can see inside it. which means it will need detailing at some point. it seems like i keep going around in circles. i am sure that i have just one signal box. boy, this seems to be an never ending story. take care. and thanks again for commenting. look after yourself. @@TONYNORTHEASTERN: no worries mate. I actually think that in addition, the fact that the disused siding is there means that you can reballast, etc in that scene and create a good effect. Don’t weather the ballast too much, cos the fact the shades will be entirely different from the surrounding lines will suggest that the tracks have been realigned. Which they have! I’d even suggest making it look more pristine and have a couple of bods in the vicinity examining the p/way to check the integrity of the work 🤔

Got an idea for the MPD expansion for you to ponder on. Maybe, shift the yard office from beside the water tank to across to the new acerage and replace with a coaling and sanding point. This also gives you the opportunity to bring in a couple of Loco Coal wagons and a dried sand van every now and again. Impressively tidy wiring loom to mate. Seen as you asked us to remind you, Tony I wouldn't reccomend you mix, plaster and ballast, it might take a while to dig it out, just for future reference, should you wish to put, oh I dunno, a signal box there for example,, in that very spot😂 I mean I'm no modeller but the new line in, just seems to add to the flow of your layout and probably realism too. Thoroughly entertaining Tony. Thank you for sharing.

I am sure the engine drivers would be very grateful for a canteen, especially after the long journey up from London. I expect Mr What Is Name, has been counting the number of lumps of rubble, that have been removed, and a few bundles of pound notes have been found nearby, no doubt connected to the Hole In The Wall Gang. I trust the workmen were wearing their high viz jackets and were able to negotiate successfully with the friendly group of halibut, who were in the middle of their annual conference in the early hours and were sitting comfortably up by the siding. I expect a good few of Mrs T's winter warmers also went down a treat to all concerned as well.

Good morning Tony, that was a undertaking, and it looks really good. You've got the aligning of those points perfectly so they should not give you any problems in the future. That's a nice location for the signal box. Should be enough room for John when he's doing relief to park his motorbike. Still loads of work ahead for you, but looking forward to seeing this area progress, whenever you get the time. We've had a bit of a todos this week, last Friday our little Annabelle (4) fell into a wooden bench in school and has loosened her two front teeth, lots of bruising and cuts to her face and gums, poor little thing had hospital appointments all last weekend so we flew up to look after the other two so they didn't have to spend the whole weekend in hospital waiting rooms. Long story but she's okay healing nicely no lasting damage. Back home again, trying to catch up with some sleep and relaxing, we for now. Thinking of you both, hope Laura is doing ok give her our love. Eddy and 😅Anne xxx 😊😊

Good morning Eddy & Anne. I hope all is well on this bright, but cold Saturday morning. The track alignment work out well because the curve of the tracks was fitted using a peco track setter when the tracks first went down. so i knew that the track was good for any alterations that may come our way in the future. plus a little bit of luck.
Poor Annabelle. children can be very resilient and bounce back very quickly. when we were kids i was always ging home will cuts and bruises. i remember the day i split my knee open trying to run away from a wasp's nest. it was my own fault teasing them. i fell over some stones split my knee, but the strangest thing it did not bleed straight away. it must have been inch long this deep cut. so i just carried playing. and when i got home my mum went nuts because my trousers were split and covered in blood. but there was no pain until i went to the hospital for stiches. sorry to bore with my childhood stories. Annabelle later on will wonder what all the fuss was about.
thanks again my friend best wishes Tony & Laura.

Dear Tony, don’t know what kind of Polyfiller you initially used, if it’s one based on a gypsum compound, you can ‘attack’ it with vinegar, regular white vinegar for example, but any kind of vinegar will do the job, because it’s the ‘enemy’ of gypsum.
Love the way you showed the rearrangement of the tracks, adding of the different points, how you do your fill in sleepers etc. Cool to see the MPH now has a Tyne Dock connection.
Anyhow, remember you saying a little while ago you were planning this addition, but also spoke on adding a turntable. Just wondering if that’s indeed the same corner.
Also curious for the ideas you will put into form for the brewery section.
    Cheerio

Good morning Vincent. i never thought that vinegar could do that, soften up the Polly filler. the brewery is something i was looking forward to doing. but the track looks well wrong. i have been toying with ripping it up and starting again. but it wont look much different to what it is now. so i will have to ponder a bit more before making a decision to get stuck into that project.
The turntable i am thinking of putting that somewhere else just in front of Newhassle i think that spot will be ideal. lots of things to think about. until next time stay safe. cheer's Tony.

@@TONYNORTHEASTERN on the Polyfiller, it depends; when we still had the Dutch version of the Wickes, they sold a brand of spackle which referred to the product characteristics of ‘polyfiller.’ Now it’s known as ‘stucpasta’ in Dutch. Stucco paste in English. That’s a gypsum based product.
I’m aware there are other kinds of polyfiller. Like Polyester filler, mainly used in car repair, or as a kind of wood repair product. To such products my comment certainly doesn’t apply.
Anyhow, in my former apartment I once had the attic ceiling stuccoed, between the beams. The plasterer, who is a friend, recommended to clean the wood with vinegar. He was right, it works like a breeze. The vinegar dissolves the gypsum, even old stuff, after which it’s much easier to remove. Whereas one uses water and soap the effect is that the moisture only pushes the gypsum in all directions. After which you see white stripes and a snowy veil everywhere. Since then after any repairs or even to clean my tools I use vinegar. So much easier. Of course you have to be careful close to any new stucco.
A while ago, I was making a kind of tryout diorama, using up some old spackle to make some rock formations on foam. Didn’t notice that a large blob of spackle settled on one of the faces. Also was too late to make an adjustment. So I just sprayed the blob with a mixture of water and vinegar, let it soak in and could easily scrape away the blob after a while. Of course I let the area dry thoroughly before applying any new layer. The area of the gypsum which has been soaked can be easily roughed up with a stiff brush after the treatment. Just went until I had a found a solid layer, which is much harder to scrape away.

As a MR fan, it's nice to see a Midland Railway box up in the North East. But do you have plans for a proper NER box in that location? Great layout, by the way Tony.

Good morning Peter. the signal had to match the one at the other end of TYNE DOCK station. so it will be staying. but in light of what you have said i will building original north eastern signal box's to replace some of the others. i think you know the one i love to make. is the over head box on the Newcastle to Carlisle branch. thanks again for commenting. cheer's for now Tony.

Just a thought from a novice would it not have been easier to cut through the fish plates and lift the track out without destroying it 🤔

Hi Barry. nice idea. but i did not want to take the risk of damaging a point by using a Razor saw. which i have done in the past. track is expendable. while turnouts are worth keeping. thanks again for commenting. cheer's for now Tony.

Hi Tony, thanks for the video, lots of progress indeed. I have just started soldering on my new layout, however for one or the other reason, the soldering does not work, I can't get tin on the tip of the soldering iron and connections just won't stick. Could you tell me what kind of iron you are using? What temperature, how many Watts? What solder tin are you using (size/ thickness)? Are you using tin with flux added or are you using separate flux? If the latter, what kind of flux? Thanks and regards, Paul

    • @TONYNORTHEASTERN
      @TONYNORTHEASTERN  5 місяців тому

Hi Paul. soldering is easy to do. you must remember to put the flux onto the cables. before adding the solder to the cables. this is what we call tinning. this helps the solder run smoothly around the cables. the same must be done to the rails. flux and a tiny bit of solder. once this done then the cable can be soldered to the rails without the solder cracking. this is watt we call a cold joint.
if this happens then you dip the cable back into the flux and try again.
the solder iron i use is a 15/30 watt fine tip. which heats up to about 200. this is more than plenty to do the task. i hope this helps. all the best Tony.

@@TONYNORTHEASTERN Hi Tony, thanks for the feedback! It looks like my iron did not work properly, so I bought a new one, a very simple one, 30 watt, with a fine tip. I also bought finer tin and different flux. Then following your description and it worked well, as you said, it's easy. Thanks again! Regards, Paul
