As a rule, you should never talk to the police. The only exception is when you've witnessed a crime, in which case you should DEFINITELY not talk to the police.

As many different laws as there are communities. Washington State, heck just about every state in the West of the U.S. says cyclists can treat stop as yield.

Why aren’t the the laws defined by now? I read that in California the power of total output over 750 is needed to be registered. But regardless of that , bike riders have the idea of the motion inspires constant movement without interruption. Even though laws state must be observed by everyone no matter what.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse but knowing the law better than them and skating the line of legality and being able to quote it and see steam coming out of their ears is priceless.
@@DustinLKimble I had a revenue rat pull me over on my motorcycle when i had it. Right away he was a typical egomaniac with an attitude. Sorry but I cant see directly behind me on a bike so yeah he followed me for a while until I turned and saw his lights. He came rushing back up wanting to know why I didnt notify him of something. Sorry with his attitude i wasnt giving him any more info then I had to. Would it have been a courtesy? Of course. But you start things off with an attitude im protecting myself. I quoted the law verbatim and to him and stated that I had to know the laws better than the idiots trying to enforce them to ensure my rights werent infringed. He came back with my license. I asked where my ticket was. He stated he was letting me off. I was like oh, so you made a call and discovered that I was in fact correct, yet refused to offer an apology for your attitude. And people wonder why the blue coats are despised so much.

Yah I have seen some crazy stuff in my area. I am in a city on the west coast of Canada. A few ppl on bikes, not ebikes, but normal bikes get sideswiped in my neighborhood by hit and runs. It happens a couple times a year. Most of them were shift workers returning after dark. In each case they were wearing full safety gear and were lit up like christmas trees. One guy was screaming in pain as I called 911 and when the police responded the first thing they asked him was how much he had to drink and did he know that bicycles cause a lot of damage to cars on a regular basis. They delayed care to breathalyze him and search him for drugs. This guy was I found out later a pharmacist who rode his bike to and from work because it was the only way for him to get any exercise. The cops treated him like a drug addict/criminal and had no sympathy saying if he drove this would not have happened. Cops had zero interest in his description of hit and run car saying it was his fault. Not an ebike story but typical attitude of cops in my area.
Very sad story, wish we can work together to improve our attitude of using a bike as a point a to point b method.

I remember the “drone” community going through the same similar issues as more people started to fly them and more people became aware of them. Every week new video of Bad actors hitting skyscrapers or flying over concerts and games and crashing into crowds, even flying around trying to film landing airplanes at an airport, I wish we had someone like this spreading the information and calling out the wrong party not just the opposite party of who their own beliefs.
Hopefully since you don’t have a FAA type of administration that can make new rules and enforce them unchecked, your community won’t have to go through the ping pong of over correcting, at one point it was technically illegal to fly a paper airplane inside your house as they stated all space above the ground is controlled airspace by the FAA and any flying vehicle intentionally put into that airspace had to adhere to all FAA rules. Sir, how do we stay above the 400ft minimum flight altitude for all aircraft but stay below the 400 maximum for RC air craft? Lol Any new tech will have its growing pains so again it’s nice to see videos like this!

If the rules are clear and known, violating them would get your bike taken from you. They could also enforce against the sellers, who are lying their asses off selling lots of these “ebikes” as class 2 or 3 compliant, while giving people easy work arounds to unlock what they paid for.

I live in Western NY and the problem on the road is that recently there are a lot of people that don't drive their cars the right way. And there are a lot of bicyclists that don't follow the rules of the road. It makes it difficult to ride safely anywhere.
Philly has the same problem but these same people get stopped in droves when the leave the city.
Not just in western NY. I live down on Long Island and drivers are driving like mad max running red lights, passing on the dirt, over medians, through fences. I never thought I would see stuff like this but that's how it is now. As for bikes, most of the people who ride on the roads over here are even worse than the bad drivers. Not following the rules of the road is one thing but around here they ride in groups harassing and damaging cars driving on the road, even swerving in front of oncoming cars and laughing as they skid to avoid hitting people. I really don't feel safe on the road anymore on a bike or in a car.
That isn't just a west New York problem, here in Australia they passed a law where a driver cannot be closer than a metre (yard) to a cyclist , I get people coming within inchs of me all the time ,it's like covid sent everybody crazy or something, it's very frightening, when a truck mirror for example misses you by three inchs as happened two days ago, I don't want to have near death experiences whenever I commute,

In Denver Colorado you don’t actually have to stop at stop signs on bicycles. You can just slow down to (it’s either 15 or 5mph) and proceed if clear. It basically becomes a yield sign.
I am amazed at how many drivers will yield the right of way to me at a four way stop. Waving me through with a smile when they see me stop.
Same, I got 300 miles on mine and soooo many times already people stop to check my bike when I go by.
I get a lot of compliments on it as well even when I'm going fast.

It's so strange to me that these dirt roads are off limits to ebikes and then comes along a pick up truck, like wtf?
It's not about the bike persay but having a tag on a state or federal road probably. In the forest here you can't ride a dirtbike except in certain area and can only cross the road to follow the trail. Now I have a dirtbike with a tag & can ride anywhere on the roadway.

By making that "legal", they may be trying to encourage riders to do just that, then brutal crashes becomes inevitable, and the incidents spark lawmakers into cracking down on "reckless riding" and possibly requiring licensing and registration for anything stronger than a 250w.
@@orvjudd1383 It makes sense for bicycles. It takes a lot longer and is a lot more effort for a bicycle rider to stop and start at a stop sign than it takes for an e-bike rider or motorist.
We need to advocate for more yield signs. Arbitrary stop signs are asking to get disregarded.

The one riding the ebike is responsibility to know what laws/rules/regs apply. That is the rider's responsibility. Not, "Oh, I didn't know or realize" when stopped. Take responsibility for own actions.

When I bought my first 10 speed racer bicycle in NY back in 1979 I was told bicycles must ride with traffic and obey the same rules as a vehicle. It hasn't changed that I'm aware of.

This was fun. As a lifetime motorcycle, bicycle, and now eBike (Class 2) rider I enjoyed this video. CHP motors are absolutely the best police. By far. I have worked in State Parks and Rangers are variable (like most police). A few are OK, but many are on authority trips and clueless.
However, it is people like these guys on the high power Sarons hauling ass in parks and offroad areas (not to mention traffic) going 30, 40mph on bicycle trails, etc. that get all ebikers in trouble with new city / county / park etc. laws. They then start with laws like this Irvine one: "No motor powered vehicles" and we are all left out with the jerks.

You can do 30 on a regular bike, and 40 if the hill is steep enough. Should be fine on an ebike
Having pedals is NOT a requirement in many states. It is the rated top speed that makes a difference. In California, the state defines 3 classes of electric bikes: Class I is for pedal assist with a maximum of 20 mph electric assist. Class II is for bikes that provide electric power whether the rider is pedaling or not, but stops providing power when the speed reaches 20 mph. Class III is for bikes that continue providing electrical power up to 28 mph. I am not sure what the local rules were on that path.

Some police Don't know the laws! They just think "you are in the Wrong", 'just stop that!'. I was pulled over by a 'police officer' and told to "to stop using the sidewalk. But there a Sign that says "Bikes Must Use sidewalk".
At the end of the day, all the bikers WERE in the wrong though... They knew something was up. So.. these bikers should have been punished but cops are too nice

Ebike rider etiquette is something I talk about all the time. There's a large group of riders that know they are illegal and ride as if they are on a class 2 or 3 but clearly are not. I'm pretty sure that anyone that purchases a suron clips the wire. It's not a bicycle, and it's barely a moped if left as stock out of the box. We have 2 ebikes, an ariel rider x-class and an aventon aventure. We ride responsibly, obey the traffic laws and other people. But I see a lot of riders in my area that do not, just plain hoolaganizm. These are the riders that can ruin ebiking for the rest of us. I've had a lot of good interactions with the police in my area, and I'm not afraid to educate them either, it helps to earn their respect. I'll say that this topic needs to be discussed a lot more. If your riding a bike that can go 40 mph or 50 mph or more it's not a class 2 or 3 ebike anymore, so license it as a moped or motorcycle. Here in Michigan I think a 3 year moped registration is only $20. I love riding my ebike and I pray that it doesn't get messed up by the illegal riders.
Same here I've have two e-bikes got my first one about five years ago a Pedego Platinum interceptor. Bye looking at it people just think if a cruiser style bicycle. And I use to be able to ride down to Hermosa beach and ride on the bike path along the coast Ethier all the way pass dockwiler beach pass LAX. Our ride to The start of the bike path at Torrance beach never had any issues with life guards or police. But then The Covid lockdown hit.and at that time my disability was starting to make it a little harder to ride as it wasn't the step thur type frame. But then I had come across a few e-bikes UA-cam channels. Were they would have a minimum of a half dozen riders. Many times dozens of them on their Super73's , electric skateboards, electric one wheelers, riding all over LA, Yes many sort of abaied the law sort of .then they started hitting the bike path in long beach, then one guy's channel showed them riding on the bike path down here was at least a couple dozen. And of course they were riding crazy most at least. It ended up getting so bad they pretty much then Banned or are still trying to competently from the bike path. Found that out the hard way when I started my ride from Torrance beach planning to go all the way to Lax and then come back. So there I was doing maybe 15 mph. This was a midweek day started about ten in the morning and the stretch from Torrance beach to the Redondo beach pier was as usual practically deserted just a few joggers and some of the usual Hispeed derailleur riders. Who bye the way were passing me like I was standing still 🙄.And actually just after a joke Triathlon speedster had gone flying by me . I looked into my left side mirror and noticed a lifeguard truck coming towards me on the sand thinking nothing of it I was just puttering along at probably about twelve miles an hour. Enjoying the ride and views. When all of a sudden actually scared me a little. Because he was maybe twenty feet behind me and using his truck speaker. Telling me to pull over 🤔 . So I stopped and pulled my bike off the path into the sand. Only to have him get out and walk towards me. I was like hi what's up as he approached looking at my bike 😒.And at first was being kinda a dick bye saying I couldn't ride my ebike on the path.Now I was 63 and just cruising .And had taken this path for at least a couple years before the lockdown. Never have any problems. And Frist thing he said was you can't ride that electric bike on the bike path and go over Eight miles an hour 😲.long story short. I basically said since When because I've been riding this bike on this path for almost two years and your the first person that has ever pulled me over 😒. Now this was the first time since the lockdown I had gone on the bike path in about Six months. I even kinda laughed when he said eight miles an hour as I had just been passed by the look at me I'm a triathlete ride who was going at least twice as fast. But Apparently they are still ok to ride like that still. 😒 At least he let me go eventually but saying I had to stay under ten miles per hour, what was it I was about to say to him Eight or ten.BTW he had said it was because too many people were complaining or getting hurt due to the resent influx of electric vehicles. So I made it to hermosa pier without any other incidents except for some Karen yelled at me about a half mile from the pier walking her two dogs that I had to slowly get around as they kept trying to go across the path to to sand and a couple of just bicycle riders that had passed me had to also avoid the dog's and there leashes it looked like the second one actually turned around and said something to her but I was a couple hundred feet behind them but she did flip him of and he returned the juster 🙄. Haven't really road down there since then. But a friend of mine just got a ticket for riding his lecticxp a week ago. The lifeguard had said to me about a hundred bucks. I'll have to ask him because he said he wasn't going to pay and fight the citation. And yes this all boiled over when the Surons and the large groups showed up 😔
So i dont understand the off road issue. You dont have to register a dirt bike. Which is much heavier.

No. Registering doesn’t change anything. Besides criminalizing people for not having paperwork. Makes an uneeded hurdle. Don’t go after pre crime. Make people liable after an accident.

In the USA, bicycles must follow all traffic laws regardless of whether they have a motor or not. It has always been thus!
Nope. You cannot drive a car on a sidewalk. EBike cannot be used on a highway unless bicycles are allowed.
In my state if you are on a bike you dont have to stop for a sign, you can treat them as yeild as long as there is no cross traffic.
I've had ebikes blow passed me on my KLX 300 cut through parking lots, use crosswalks, run stop signs with no turn signals. I had to pass a riding test, maintain insurance, pay yearly tags, keep my bike legal, and obey the road laws.
Big problem is that most people don't know the difference between an e bike, motorized pedal vehicle, made famous in Europe, and small motorbikes. I even get looked at weird, when I ride my 16bmph mobility scooter.
@Donald Thorpe I like your humor. My town passed a law that allows bicyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs and stop lights as stop signs. I feel that is a good thing for those using peddle power.

Where I live, it doesn’t matter if you have pedals. Class and motor restrictions are a thing here but what matters more than anything is top speed. Over 30 miles in Austin and you need a license and to get it registered and have plates. Also some places do require a license for dirt bikes over 50cc but not necessarily registration or plates.
In my opinion yes traffic law's should be followed. I have been riding my etrike for 6 years now without issue. However in the last 6 months there's been several new ebikes hit the local streets of which the riders don't think the traffic law's apply to them. I say write them tickets let them pay the fines.

^have to. People that don’t ride or rarely ever ride hardly understand this. It is not like a motorcycle. Bikers should be able to do as they please. However, if they cause physical harm or property damage be held liable. Like this, there’s a tall bridge going over the interstate with a sidewalk about 18” wide i know. When even walking it the rail is knee tall. Short AF. On your bike it is dangerous as cars wiz by. But it’s illegal to ride in the road. It also dangerous in the road as it very busy with no shoulder at all. But atleast if you got knocked, you wouldn’t fall over the rail to your peril. A person must block traffic, sprint, or what I do is sprint then stop to sit on the sidewalk as I watch the traffic for a break to hop back down to sprint.

The thing is you couldn't take that ebike and use it to get a motorcycle license. You would have to have a actual motorcycle to acquire a motorcycle license.
You can rent a 250cc scooter to get a motorcycle licence
In PA, at least a few years back, you could register (for free) for the msf course & they loan you a 250cc moto & helmet for the training & riding test.
If a vehicle requires a license than vehicle can be legally used for the road test. This is true even for CDL and I had a really rare type of CDL due to my knowledge of this law. I had a CDL class A with no airbrake

Yes. Plenty of Bicycle Riders think they don't have to stop at a stop sign, but they must abide by all the rules every other vehicle on the road does.
No that’s not true, bicycle are classified as “protected road users” and they don’t have to follow nearly as many of the laws or regulations. For example bicycles can legally ride on the shoulders, even going against traffic, where no other vehicles can.
Idk about everywhere but In Denver Colorado you don’t actually have to stop at stop signs on bicycles. You can just slow down to (it’s either 15 or 5mph) and proceed if clear. It basically becomes a yield sign.

There is a guy on youtube that goes by the name of RAW who does this kind of riding all the time, this is why communities are enacting tough e bike laws that will affect all of us e bikers and it's just not fair.

I'm a retired police Corporal. I can say with great certainty two things: First, all bicycles, including but ESPECIALLY E-bikes, have to follow the exact same laws that cars do. Stop at all red lights, stop signs, obey speed limits, etc... Second, if the E-bike has a motor more than 750 watts, most states consider it illegal on public roads. Additionally, some states say that if the E-bike can go more than 20 MPH WITH a throttle or 28 MPH WITHOUT a throttle installed, they are illegal on most states streets. Also, up to Class 3 is street legal, over that is not. Some states say that they have to have pedals, horn, turn signals, etc...Check your states laws! Some states even require a motorcycle license if they can go faster than 28 MPH. The tickets you could receive are the SAME as a car driver. And the #IrvinePolice guy didn't even look legit; he had YELLOW lights on his truck, and wasn't even armed. Guessing he wasn't a sworn officer..... Be safe!
I have been riding a cargo Ebike 5 years with a Bafang BPM2 500 watt motor and no problems with the local police so far. I do pedal the bike. If they just faked it a bit nobody would have stopped them. Hand signals, stopping at stop signs, pedaling some of the time and riding at a moderate speed goes a long way.
The first one, where the rider couldn't hear the cop because he had earbuds in. That is a prime example of why using these things when controlling any vehicle increases your risk factor.
Yep. That's why I refuse to cycle with earphones, heck. Not even when walking seeing as where I live requires me to walk alongside a street. Not busy, but I still like to know when something is coming.

The 2nd clip is NYC and began at 125th street on the east side, that same location is where a delivery rider was killed by a truck, the truck did not stop. An average of 12 people a month are killed or seriously injured in NYC on both pedal assist and self powered bikes. NYPD is currently making a big push to enforce traffic laws and even confiscating, larger electric scooter and gas powered scooters from riders and even store fronts that openly sell these illegal scooters. Just recently a mother on a unregistered gas scooter was killed while her child was injured by a vehicle backing out of their driveway in NYC. Its a huge problem here in NYC.

in my state to answer the question at 4:19 north carolina recignizes 3 types of mopeds (which includes ebikes, scooters, and eucs) type 1 mopeds are anything with less then 750 watt motors with pedal assist only, type 2 is 750 watts maximum with throttle assist, and type three is your run of the mill 50cc scooter or anything over 750 watts which by law MUST be registered with the dot and IS NOT permitted on bicycle lanes
"You're supposed to know the laws" ... and yet... the argument cops, lawyers and judges use to excuse police officers who's primary job is LAW ENFORCEMENT, to break or misinterpret the law, is that it's not their job to know every law, are allowed to "police" based on "best judgement" and rely on the courts to sort it out. We are told very specifically that we are NOT to argue with or question police officers... officers who are given a free pass to not know ALL the laws. While the attitude and outlook regarding citizens... who's primary job is NOT law enforcement, is that they are supposed to know the law! That's ass-backwards.

However, you're supposed to know rather basic traffic laws and/or rules if you take part in traffic.
That being said, of course there are police officers actively looking for minor bullshit. While they're technically right to do so, most will just give you a headsup, and let you go on with your day.
Then there are people like the second clip in this. He was rightfully stopped, as he rode like an asshole. Taking part in traffic involves looking out for others and yourself, or in other words: always assume everyone in traffic is an idiot, including -and especially- yourself. .

I'm a Canadian, living in our biggest city. Just got my first e-bike and love it. Mine has a digital limiter and I was shown how. I will not risk it and attract police and lose the ability to use the top shelf bike path system. Plenty of time to gun it in rural areas. Here it is 32kmh.
Only interactions i ever had with cops in NYC on my ebike have been compliments and curious questions (lots of DIY mods), though I do show attention to things like stop signs / red lights, and have turn signals on the front, back, and back of helmet, and use them all the time. I also always avoid being reckless and am always polite with the cops
In California you can only get a "bike ticket", assuming you're not drunk. Bike tickets DO NOT COUNT AGAINST YOUR DRIVING RECORD.

In EU bikes are limited to 250 Watts and up to 25 km/h assist. Everything above can't use roads for bikes and have to be registered (with plate) and you have to pay third-party liability insurance (like 20$/year).
In the state of nj a moped is considered a motorized bicycle with pedals and a top speed of no greater than 25 mph . I’m sure different states have different laws governing them , also in our states handbook states they must be no greater than 50cc and be registered and have headlights, taillights and turn signals and a horn
In Denver, we have what they call an "Idaho stop". You can roll through an intersection without stopping as long as you follow all other traffic laws and are going under 12mph

Yes, this is true. But it only applies to stop signs, not red lights. Bike rides must stop at red lights, and then may proceed if the intersection is clear. Way too many bike riders blow right through red lights.

@@ghz24 without electric assist, it takes more physical energy to get going again after a stop. With an ebike, it's easier to get moving from stationary.

This is awesome, police cleaning up the scene. In Australia, points are deducted off drivers license for cyclists breaking the rules including going thru stop signs.
One thing over looking is some of those bikes have pegs not pedals and that makes a big difference. Some advice you can have a bike that's to many watts but have pedals and don't speed were you can be clocked. Honestly 1000 watts is best because it's about 30mph and that's about as fast as you can go without being messed with by police and breaks aren't really thing at this speed anyway so going faster is primed for a crash when inevitably someone cuts you off or break checks you. Having built a 5000 watts bike I can tell you it's fun but the quality isn't there I'm lucky to be alive after riding it I was doing 55mph and broke the frame going over train tracks the torke snapt the forks the only reason the wheel didn't fall off was the chain!
These cops need to catch the real criminals! Asking if your electric bike from Amazon has insurance and a plate is ridiculous! Go find the impaired drunk driver's!

Well you have to understand, and this is a disturbing truth, but it's all about shaking down people for money. It's not about keeping the public safe from "dangerous bicycles", or anything else. It's all about the money, and that's just a fact. It's so much easier and cheaper for a cop to shake down a cyclist, than it is to stop drunk drivers or chase down real criminals. That's just how it is, unfortunately.

Ive been working on my flywheel pedal assist i wonder if i can use it on the trails here its not even motorized but ive been clocked at 45 after a big hill using the flywheel to start never knew i could do a burnout on a bike
Turbo Levo is 720W peak, 660W continuous. How is this being sold in Norway where we have a «nominal» 250W limit? Because the bike requires less than 250W when pedalling with your hand? The sellers are open with that it uses more in the hills where torque sensor is activated more.
I'm so glad I live in Texas never once seen a cop interact with someone on a bike unless they were in some sort of accident. All these regulations are insane.
Same here, I live in Dallas, and ride my e-bike all over town, on all the hike and bike trails, everywhere! And I have never once seen or heard of a cop harassing someone on an e-bike. Sometimes I go over to Fort Worth and ride with my friends because Fort Worth has great bike trails too. Even there, never seen a cop bothering e-bikers. I'm not even sure if either city has regulations for e-bikes. Never heard of it until I saw this video.

I'm new to ebikes and i didnt even know there were laws different than manual pedal bikes until i saw one of your videos. Mine is a class 2 and made sure i know the laws just in case i would happen to be pulled over. I even screenshotted the law to my phone in case such an incident happens. I dont intend on breaking any laws on my ebike as im only using it to commute to and from work for now. I live in PA but from what ive seen, many of the laws are very similar from state to state.

I have over 12,000 miles on my e-bike. What I have observed in Arizona is that the police really don't care so long as you aren't disturbing traffic and or behaving in an obviously dangerous manner. That probably changes a little bit when you're in state or county or city parks. Park rangers have specific rules they need to enforce.

I was riding a 250 dirt bike on walking/biking trails and crossed a main road. Cop stopped the group and told us that we were allowed to ride the trails but had to push the bikes across the road since they were illegal to operate on the roadways. That was it. This in a major colorado city. The trails allow horses and bikes so why not dirt bikes.

The first guy -- it depends on where you live. Here in Idaho, I do not have to stop at stop signs on my bicycle. They are treated as yields.
I got flagged by a trail officer on the local rail trail in NH recently. On the NH state trail website it states that class 1 & 2 ebikes are allowed. My class 2 e-bike goes 20 miles an hour. I'm just trying to learn how to ride a bike and I was going to visit my grandmother. I have a class 2 Himiway ebike.

I actually live in Irvine. If there's police that you have to get involved with, you would hope it's them. Irvine is an affluent community. It is quite difficult to join this force because they have very high standards. Between the number of applicants they receive (Irvine pays very well relatively) and the standards, it's a pretty good bunch compared to most. They do not tolerate bad cop behavior (you can imagine considering the population base here). They also are fairly lenient and tolerant (it's all about risk management). The people here don't ride those crazy bikes here (I also assume bc it's risk management by wealthy people). Irvine is like bike country where you can often see huge entourages of riders that look like a peleton).

And you will not be putting you’re life in danger .you are on a road with threats off death all around you .
Also you are using a bike that is way heavier than a normal bike so killing others is very possible .Stay safe

In Canada e-bikes are limited to 30 kmh, which is about 18 mph. In some places in the U.S. apparently they are limited to 30 mph. In that case I think there is an argument that they shouldn't be allowed on walking paths and trails. That's obviously a significant hazard, especially as many e-bike riders don't seem to know how to modulate their speed. I mean that literally. I see e-bike riders, on the trails and they're going way too fast around corners or past pedestrians, and you can see on their faces that they're scared. I suspect many riders don't understand how the speed controller works so they just set a constant speed and hope for the best. Obviously that would be an operator-training issue, but of course there is no mandatory operator training for an e-bike.
the bike at 8mins in is a "stealth bomber clone" basically the frame of a 10k mid drive has been copied fitted with a 45-75 ah battery, 72v 50a - 200a controller and 3000w - 15,000w motor. they come in 2 common gearing settings and are always fully customized from factory to meet buyer specifications from suspension, type of wheels and tires, lights and turn signals and obviously the power train, you van even choose a bike or moto style seat they are great and have pedals just for show and battery conservation when cruising

In my state, with working pedals, the allowable speed limit is a little higher then without pedals.
Also any bike over a specific horsepower will need to be registered.

E-bikes that are set to mode 3 are treated like motor vehicles, need registration, and are illegal on bike paths. Some states even require a motorcycle license. Keep it in mode 2. You can change most to category (mode) 3, but you can't change it back.
Never watched your video's before but watched this for the hell of it. I ride a CBR 600 so my laws are clear. But I will say this.....the biggest thing I learned from this video is now I know I'll never visit California.
It won't be long before cities start requiring certified stickers to display on e-bikes stating what they are and or inspection stickers.
In idaho, you can ride on any public road and sidewalk with bicycles and e-bikes, and you are not required to stop at red lights or stop signs. Very liberal and user friendly to cyclists.
You missed many key points....
1st most of the bikes in this post would not qualify as an ebike in idaho, or anywhere... 2nd, an ebike can only ride on the sidewalk, without using "any" motorized assistance.... 3rd ebikes (and bicycles) still have the duty to yield, at red lights or at stop signs.... So for example, if a rider has a red light and they choose to not yield and another vehicle hits them, that had a green light, the bike rider is still liable, for causing the accident...
So yes it is more liberal for ebike riders, but its not a free for all....

Just to give my 2¢:
I actually am very informed of the laws of Michigan. Being interested in building a cargo hauler E-bike by perhaps making a DIY E-bike with 2 hub motors and a mid-motor (the weight I can haul in a 50-lb steel wagon can easily get upwards of 200 lbs, so the E-bike conversion is to help accelerate a heavy load), I discovered that the E-bike laws in Michigan are first, that E-bikes are treated as normal bicycles. Second, a 750 watt motor is the max we can have (which makes no sense, when a normal bicycle can exceed that power output on roads and keep up with traffic, as I've done, in addition to a 15 hp, 125 cc engine, which produces 11.1 kw of power is the minimum for scooters and the like to be used on freeways). Third, no license is necessary for an E-bike. Fourth, unless posted, E-bikes are usable on paved trails, but not unpaved trails (don't ask me why the difference).
Point is, be knowledgable about the laws, so you know how to deal with ignorant cops.
Edit: Modern mopeds are not limited to 3k watts. Believe it or not, mopeds can have bigger engines than 125 cc -- which means the actual engine ceiling, if you will, is more than 11.1 kilowatts of power. A moped will usually have at least a 15 hp engine. On the other hand, a 750 watt E-bike motor is equivalent to 4 watts more than 1 hp, which is 746 watts.
kids in my neighborhood ride around going 20mphs swerving all over the roads blowing stop signs and driving the wrong way onthe roads...things need to change
I have a 350W that is my wheelchair in bicycle form. My fourth heart attack was in the widow maker so I can no longer walk up hills. I can go all day long on a flat surface. The local police know that I’m disabled and that my bike is a method of overcoming my mobility issues. And it’s a fun new habit!😊

This is not new for cyclists in general. Actually it seems more and more people are incline to feel it is ok to make up your own rules as you go. I have been an avid cyclist since the early 70's, now I take advantage of electric assist. In my opinion, if we don't align ourselves with some formal set of rules our roadways will appear like those we see in 3ed world news clips. In my car I never proceed immediately after I get a green light. More and more I look both ways multiple times cause in our community we seem to have a 'stopping for red lights is optional' law.

I'm here in Salem Oregon I'm pretty happy with our police you got to be really reckless for them to stop you on a scooter or ebike I ride at 32 miles an hour and have been for about 3 years now and never once been stopped mainly because I slow it down to the speed limit and I don't ride on sidewalks but I don't know just never had to deal with that

Trails should have Speed Limits. Some Bicycle riders are just dangerous on trails. The issue here is speed which leads to recklessness. Allow all ebikes that look like bikes with pedals on trails, tickets those that are reckless or speeding.

It's not just e-bikes, one of the trails I ride has a lot of hikers. I go really slow and get passed by MTB's riding like they stole it.
Mtb trails should have no limit. Now e bikes tear up trails but people walk mtb trails and complain we take care of those trails and build them

It appears that everyone has a problem with many ebikes that are heading out where they are not skilled to be. That is an education issue. Right now it seems to be a FreeForAll to sell as many ebikes as possible. The result will be the lose of trails.

There are bike paths are in “open space” in Irvine. Because there were no signs, I was 100% legal to ride there. Now there are big signs at the start of the trial now.
The signs not being there doesn’t make it legal.
As a police officer you enforce the spirit of the law and the letter of the law. Most times I used to educate someone on the laws and never expected people to understand or know every law on the books. That’s absurd! The spirit of the law is to educate someone about the laws. I have a Sur Ron and kept it legal. Leave it to CA to make everything illegal!
I studied the laws in my state and try to avoid these situations. "IGNORANCE OF THE LAW IS NO EXCUSE" for us, but the police make up laws because of their ignorance... Best to print out the laws and statutes and keep them with you! Here in Oklahoma, ebike violations can go up to $500 per offense...
We're limited to Class 2 in all city parks and trails... Also 1000W max before needing 'Moped' registration. We get away with a lot because the cops don't know about controllers boosting a 750W motor to 1500W peaks...
The quest for more ebike power and speed as marketing tools combined with riders determined to piss people off is going to result in all of us getting denied the right to ride our ebikes on lots of locations currently open to us.
They need to stay off the ORV trails and out of the ORV parks unless they buy a ORV Tag. Us dirt bikers have to pay a yearly fee to ride trails on non private property!
