Some of that matriarchal culture still survives today. In traditional Japanese families, the wife runs the household and controls the finances, giving her husband an allowance. My ex-wife is Japanese, and her family name comes from her mother because her father had an older brother and her mother didn't have any brothers to carry the name. Her father tried talking me into taking their family name when we got married because her brother didn't have kids. In the family registry, she was listed as the head of household.
I'm skeptical of the last segment attributing the decline of sexual freedom and a more matriarchial society in Japan to Confucian Chinese culture. Here are my two main reasons: China, itself, contrary to popular belief was fairly matriarchial as well in some respects. Women were in many cases the real power behind the throne of the Emperor whether as the Empress Dowager or as the Empress Consort. Concubines themselves tended to wield quite a bit of political influence. Confucianism nominally placed male above female, but the reality of this being put into practice is more complicated. One factor for this is that age was seen as a greater marker of social status than sex, i.e. elder women & mothers > younger men & sons. A much stronger rebuttal would however be that the peak of Chinese influence in Japan was during the Tang dynasty. This period is known as the Golden Age of Women in China precisely because women had near equal status to men. Sexual freedoms were prevalent and even encouraged. Women could form their own associations & sports teams, be active in outdoors life, and princesses dominated the courts. China during this period was also more Buddhist and Taoist than Confucian in and of itself. In fact, Hei'an sexual culture is often said to have echoed that of the Tang dynasty. I'm not sure if you might be referring to the decline in female status at a later period in Japanese history, where we saw a similar trend in China where their status precipitously plummeted during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Regardless, it is definitely an overgeneralization to say that the social status of women in Japan declined because of traditional Chinese and Confucian values when these were not static in China either.

putinpunhere has a point. What is shown in this video wasn't really the norm for most agricultural societies, including all Indo-European cultures from 5500 BC onwards (6000 years before Kofun Japan), which were extremely patriarchal, far more than anything you see today, perhaps with the sole exception of the most Islamic countries. In Proto-Indo-European society, women had so little rights that they were considered the property of the father of the household, and when they were married off to different families, it wasn't in the sense of union between two people like today, but it was rather in the sense that a woman was given as a gift to the other household, usually in exchange for either material goods or favors.

When I was a teenager I lived in Japan for a year and I agree that Japanese culture has a strong matriarchal flavor viewed from my middle-class overseas Chinese background. I have come to view Japanese 'home' culture to be quite similar to Malay where men are married into the women's household. Recently, while doing my research about a Japanese company for a job interview, I was pleasantly surprised that the founder named his company based on a confucian concept and I appreciate the respect and esteem which Japanese society confers to Confucius.
So what happens when the boy leaves and it later learned she got pregnant? does the family try and hunt down the boy, or does the child get raised never knowing his father?
Good question indeed. This is off of memory so someone correct me if it's inaccurate. iirc they did not hunt down the biological father. It wasn't a huge deal, the child was assumed to be the child of the married couple, with full rights just like a "normal" child. In the Heian they were lax with regards to bastards. I guess raising a child in the household was enough to make it legitimate.
@@Linfamy I find that odd, especially since such a system would enable a new mouth to feed at any moment without additional support from the father. Say what you want about the monogamous west, but their system helped clarify who was responsible for whose child. It seems simpler and more practical than having your daughter randomly producing children from an unknown stranger and dealing with the natural consequences yourself with no compensation.
I'm not sure how prevalent bastard births were, it may not have been often enough to make a difference. Remember these were the elites, they likely didn't have problem feeding their children, and the advantage of political marriages was an incentive to have more children.
I think old Japanese dating and marriage system from south Asia. Becouse there were Utagaki (Villagers would sing and dance on the way up to a mountaintop, where singing, dancing, eating, and the reciting of poetry would occur, in celebration of the beginning of spring or autumn.Closely associated with harvest rites, and therefore fertility, these events often also led into much free sexual activity.) since Nara period, similar events exist in southern China, Vietnam, Indochina Peninsula, Philippines and Indonesia.
@@Linfamy Thank you! and I think there had been like yobai and utagaki all over the world during BC. For example may poll was originally a sexual event.
In rural Holland, up till rather recently, say, World War Two, particularly farmers practiced comparable courting procedures. The suitable candidate for future son-in-law would be allowed to sleep with his wife-to-be untill she became pregnant. Then the couple married. If no pregnancy resulted, the relationship ended. Probably this method was to ensure a marriage would be fruitful so the new couple and their children could take over the farm and start taking care of their parents and parents-in-law when they became too old to work.
Dunno if it's truth or a myth, but I've heard that one way some courtesans reduced the risk of STDs was... by having only one client. Probably a privilege that only few could achieve, but find a rich enough client, and offer him exclusive rights to yer groin, if he pays you enough to keep you alive. ... sounds better than bamboo if you ask me. (disclaimer - I love bamboo viscose underwear, but I don't think medieval Japanese knew how to make it yet)
I believe this was the basic practice during the Kamakura period. I read Towazugatari (問わず語り), and it seemed to be the case then. But this "client" wasn't a prostitute. The main character, Lady Nijo, was a concubine to the emperor. Emperors only had one concubine, and Lady Nijo was thrown out of the court when she had an affair. Concubines were only allowed to "have relations" with the emperor, and at this time the emperor only had one concubine. Also, in the Kamakura period, while concubines were highly respected as being part of the courtier class, prostitutes were thought about in almost the same way they are thought about today - to the point many concubines didn't want to even be seen talking with a prostitute. But the thing is we are talking about the Kofun era in this video...which is WAY WAY WAY before the Kamakura Period. It was probably not the same then.

You're right, cheating has a negative connotation. It was expected so I wouldn't put any ethical judgements on it. Another word for it would be marital affair, but that also has a negative connotation in modern usage.
Very nice. It's too bad that Christian influences caused homosexuality to be demonized. It was pretty common and accepted throughout most of the pre-Christian world.
there was no concept of Homosexuality in the ancient world. Men just had sex with men. The responses to this were either 'meh' or 'weirdos' depending on circumstances. On weirdo side you have China, Ancient Rome, ancient sumeria, Babylonia, Assyria, ancient Greece
Can you also talk about the life of children (from birth to adulthood) in Kofun Japan (that you also included dark issues as infanticide and child abandonment) .

@J purple ramen correct me if am wrong am not a Christian but isn't there a bible called the book of salmon where it talks about how sex.is a beautiful thing and should be treasured etc.
But what you represented here isn't a matriarchy. A matriarchy is basically the same as the patriarchy, but with the sexes inversed, and it's how it's viewed in sociology. The society you represented here is actually considered egalitarian, since both sexes have power, although they may be complementary (such as the case of the leaders being a couple with the man being the leader regarding secular things, and the woman working with the occult). Note that having a king and a queen working together at the same time doesn't an egalitarian society make. In the kingdom of Meroe, the king and queen were brother and sister, and they didn't marry each other, but had their own prince and princess consort as their partner. The queen received prestige, and had authority, but the king was the one who usually ruled. The queen would rule, however, when the king was absent, or when he died. But no matter which one has a child first, the queen was the only one who could bear an heir, so the succession was actually matrilineal, even though the society was patriarcal.
What happend to that homosexual part later on? How did later Generations handeld it? What was the most common reaction to it later in japenese history? And any idea About today? Anyway, kofun Japan sounds like a chill mindset.
Hi, I have a question. If the girl was 16 when they married how old was the husband? I heard the men was many years older than his wife... is that true?
Yeah, husbands could be really old, like her grandfather's age. Although, we mostly have records of marriages from the upper class, where marriages were for political mobility. Commoner marriages may have had less of an age gap.
When my ex left I made him take all his damn bronze mirrors. Those are such a pain to polish! But super curious in regards to sex outside of marriage: in some tribes across the world we see unique means of birth control or parenting approaches to children born outside of the material bond. Wow on some aspects ancient Japanese is open minded than modern times
Agreed
You seem to really like body-pillows...
Haha i know right? Maybe subconsciously I do since I brought it up twice already.
Yobai culture explains what those doujins portrayed actually.
Japan has gone through quite a metamorphosis culturally speaking. Pretty cool stuff.
Oh yes, many changes throughout the years
Linfamy It makes me imagine a scenario where someone was sent back in time to 660 BCE, the year Japan as a nation-state was officially founded. And a side affect of their time travel stopped them from aging, and they lived in Japan all the way up to today. I wonder how a person like that would view the country.
its funky to see similar practices from all over the world, the yobai sounds a lot like what some tribes in papua and australia practice, as well as a few other places i cant recall off the top of my head. like even down to staying for breakfast to make things official. super cool
The main means by which STDs were avoided was that very few STDs had made it to the Archipelago at this point.
^this. Some of the more terrible stds (like syphilis and hiv) came about only much, much later. Usually brought by european sailors to the rest of the world.
whoa part 13 already?! good job linfamy and keep it up!
That's why you really have to appreciate Naruto for all its historical Japanese cultural references
It's so brutal that the patriarchal system started centuries ago and still has so much power and influence in the world.. so primitive
I believe many ancient civilisations were way more open-minded than most people today
But Indo-Europeans are of OP!
pretty sure were more open minded today than most ancient civilizations back in the day. Despite you thinking ancient civilizations were more open minded than today, gender roles would no doubt have been more stricter than ever.
putinpunhere has a point.
Times are changing. Patriarchy soon will be gone.
@@ayonticabanerjee8326 Hahahaha. Good joke.

Hey Linfamy I really love your videos. I was wondering how far do you plan on going with this series? Will you go all the way to modern Japan?
Hmm...at least up to the Meiji era. I'm willing to go further if there's interest =)
@@Linfamy Only up to the Meiji restoration is probably all that's necessary. Most people know what happened from 1940's onward (but the comeback in the 70s and 80s may be interesting for some people to learn about.) If you want to focus on non-modern history, stopping at Meiji may be good. Besides, talking about WW2 can get messy pretty quickly in the comments section. lol.
Why isn't anybody talking about all these references that NARUTO took
🤷♂️
Lord Amateur maybe because that was way over done regarding another video.
So what happens when the boy leaves and it later learned she got pregnant? does the family try and hunt down the boy, or does the child get raised never knowing his father?
Good question
Good question indeed. This is off of memory so someone correct me if it's inaccurate.
iirc they did not hunt down the biological father. It wasn't a huge deal, the child was assumed to be the child of the married couple, with full rights just like a "normal" child.
In the Heian they were lax with regards to bastards. I guess raising a child in the household was enough to make it legitimate.
@@Linfamy
I find that odd, especially since such a system would enable a new mouth to feed at any moment without additional support from the father.
@@Linfamy
Sorry I naturally assumed this was also common among the middle class and such. If it is only the elites then that's different.
Informational and so much fun....love the cheeky humour

I think old Japanese dating and marriage system from south Asia. Becouse there were Utagaki (Villagers would sing and dance on the way up to a mountaintop, where singing, dancing, eating, and the reciting of poetry would occur, in celebration of the beginning of spring or autumn.Closely associated with harvest rites, and therefore fertility, these events often also led into much free sexual activity.) since Nara period, similar events exist in southern China, Vietnam, Indochina Peninsula, Philippines and Indonesia.
Interesting!
@@Linfamy Thank you! and I think there had been like yobai and utagaki all over the world during BC. For example

2:17 - Gotta bring those Bronze Mirrors.
Today the bride's family is expected to pay for the wedding. No different from them having to pay for the house back then.
Ah that sounds like a good strategy
Another great episode. I do have to say that it seems to end rather suddenly. It kind of feels like you cut off the end of the episode.
Yeah, I'm terrible at endings. I'll work on it ;)
A simple, "Thank you for watching and please subscribe!" or something would make it more obvious that it was an intentional ending to the episode (A credits roll? ;)). This felt like a bit of an editing mistake, like you had cut off a part of the end and hadn't realised even after uploading the vid. Just my 2c.
Yeah, so I keep experimenting with things. Viewer retention drops at the end screen, so I wanted to see how the UA-cam algorithm reacts without the end screen. Unfortunately, I'm terrible at endings, making it look like it ended abruptly =P. Bear with me, I'm still learning!

I have a question: you made a previous video about ancient japan aristocractic women "cheated alot". But is it cheating when it is expected that she does it and everyone knew exclusivity wasn't to be expected?
You're right, cheating has a negative connotation. It was expected so I wouldn't put any ethical judgements on it. Another word for it would be marital affair, but that also has a negative connotation in modern usage.
Why can’t japan be like this today 😭
I feel like I might actually have a chance if I could time travel to ancient Japan
Stop peeing on my dog, and never start butt first. Got it! XD

Very nice. It's too bad that Christian influences caused homosexuality to be demonized. It was pretty common and accepted throughout most of the pre-Christian world.
True, I think most people don't realize how common it was
Z. L. Burington Well, I am fine with it as long as gay men can't donated blood.
there was no concept of Homosexuality in the ancient world. Men just had sex with men. The responses to this were either 'meh' or 'weirdos' depending on circumstances. On weirdo side you have China, Ancient Rome, ancient sumeria, Babylonia, Assyria, ancient Greece
That is homosexuality.

Confucius wasn't as bad as Judaeo-Christianity and Islam....Some denominations of Judaeo-Christianity consider sex as a sin that needs to be purified once performed

If I had to be reborn at one place and time in ancient history, it would definitely be as a woman in Kofun Japan

@@Linfamy tysm for answering!
I mean marriages between step siblings isn't too bad.
They aren't biologically related, which is the important part.
My ancestor is upper class samurai and part of Daimyo's family. One ancestor samurai married the Daimyo's daughter.
I don't think any society that legalized or normalized the sexual slavery of women could be considered "matriarchal".
