This is Kevin Bacon's 2nd movie ever. His first movie was Animal House, which came out a year prior in 1979. He did Footloose 4 years after Friday the 13th in 1984
As much as I'm not a fan of this series...I will *happily* watch it over Animal House...just *nothing* to root for in that one. Still beats Revenge of the Nerds, tho.
Fun Fact: Betsy Palmer, the actress of Jason's mother originally turned down the role, but took it because she needed a new car. Also, I love that Jason has become such a known movie monster that the ending to this movie shocks everybody when the killer is revealed.
Further casting fun facts: Harry Crosby (Bill) is the son of legendary singer Bing Crosby, and Truck Driver Enos is the voice of Maurice, Belle's dad in Beauty and the Beast. :)
Yeah because she said that she didn't like it because she was gonna play a revengeful mother to an ugly child who drowned but after she had guest star in TV shows like murder she wrote I only seen her in 2 episodes playing two different characters from season 2 and season 5 I think I might the seasons wrong
I'm still kinda shocked that the reveal of who the killer is hasn't been spoiled by new viewers, especially given Scream. And I'm still amazed at how Jason coming out of the water still gets people. This movie is a product of its time, kinda slow and not a lot of plot, but I still love it as an 80s horror classic.
My parents saw this at the cinema when they were courting. My dad still remembers Kevin Bacon's gruesome death. Any time he sees Kevin Bacon appear in any movie, he says 'Oh what a bad death he had!' 😁
Harry Manfredini composed the score for this movie (and most of the sequels) and he knocked it out of the park. Tom Savini did the special effects for this one (and Part IV) and is a legend in the business.
With all its goofy charm, it really was ground breaking back in 1980 and today in a lot of aspects. I love the things that no one really talks about like the cinematography. The use of birds and owls cooing in the night. Love that subtle shot of Ned looking across the lake at Kevin Bacon and his girl frolicking along the shore, like ah, that Kevin Bacon gets all the girls, how he’s clearly feeling like a 3rd wheel. I just appreciate those subtle moments in the film. And of course the use of rain:)
What a great post-viewing discussion! Your conversation was just as interesting as the actual movie (for me). Loved that you had no clue who the real killer was 👍🏾

The kid leaping out of the lake scared the shit out of me as a child. There's a scene from Friday the 13th part 2 that also left me scarred for life, but I don't like talking about it.
Glad to see this reaction reuploaded. Your reactions to that final jump-scare will never get old! I hope you'll watch the sequels at some point, with 4 and 6 being my favorites.
Fun fact: Friday the 13th was inspired by Halloween, during the height of slasher films. When it was released, John Carpenter watched it and noticed it’s high amount of gore. Which inspired him to make the second Halloween more bloody. So the Halloween franchise and Friday the 13th franchise both inspired each other. Could be wrong but I think it’s strangely wholesome lol
Actually it was inspired by Mario Bava’s Bay of Blood. It was released as Last House On The Left II, Sean S. Cunningham produced the original and sued the distributor. Casting Betsy Palmer as Jason's mother was a pretty smart move too. Betsy Palmer was fairly well known for different TV and movie roles and often played kind, compassionate women who were either romantic leads or supportive friend/sister figures to the lead characters. So audience had a certain feeling of comfort with her and were not ready for her to be a creepy mother turned killer.

Many thanks to TBR & Samantha! 😱 This movie never gets old to me. I love the first four in this series. #TBRSchmitt #SeanSCunningham #FridayThe13th #FridayThe13th1980
I guarantee everybody here was waiting for your reaction to the ending jump scare, and your reaction was absolutely classic! I saw this movie on TV as a young girl in the mid-80s and I nearly jumped through the roof. It's good to see that this movie hasn't dated and still has the same impact for a new audience. I really loved your discussion afterwards (I think one of your best). I agree, this story is really told well and not your usual run-of-the-mill slasher affair. Friday the 13th is up there with the original Halloween imo. Based on some of your previous reaction choices, I would like to recommend two things for you (Hope you don't mind me doing so)... The first is the TV series "Wayward Pines" (2015) [Season One only, the one with Matt Dillon]. Based on your wonderful reaction videos to Fargo Season One, I think you would both really enjoy Wayward Pines too. They were the two big shows of that time. (Season Two was a totally separate thing and bombed, but the original Season One is magnificent, and I think as strong and as memorable as Fargo). There's no obligation of course, but if you do ever decide to check it out, please don't do any research beforehand because it relies heavily on mystery and reveals. The second recommendation is the Korean psychological horror classic movie "Suddenly in the Dark" (1981), aka: Suddenly in Dark Night (깊은밤 갑자기). The reason being, it was a one-off Korean movie that deliberately aped the styles of the horror movies that were coming out of the west (US/UK) during the late 70s/early 80s. So it will have a somewhat familiar vibe for you while at the same time being something a bit different. It's a brilliant movie that reminds me of The Shining mixed with several other celebrated horror movies of that era. I haven't commented before but I just wanna take this opportunity to say how much I enjoy watching your videos. Your reactions are genuine, your discussions are always interesting and you come across as a very down to earth couple. Congratulations on your new parenthood.
I first saw this in the theater with friends, then a few years later in the 80s we rented it after getting one o' them 'fancy', 'cutting-edge' VHS VCRs. There was no frame advance, only Pause, and we made a game in the Kevin Bacon death scene of trying to exactly pause on the blood spurt from the arrow piercing his neck, the winner being the one who could freeze it when the arch of blood was the highest, going into his mouth in that instant before the scene switch. Fun times! :) One of our friends had just attended college with actress Laurie Bartram, who had played Brenda in the movie before going to college. When the scene came onscreen where she was playing strip Monopoly in that sexy underwear, all he could do was gaze at the movie with a 'deer in the headlights' expression, muttering lustfully under his breath, "Wow, that's Laurie!" Fun times, indeed.... :)
Pfft. Probably won't even get enough roles for anyone to even link other actors to any movie he'd be cast in. You could practically make a game out of it with some other actors, but not him.
This movie was released when I was a senior in high school. It was so fun to see this in the theater! No idea there would be so many sequels to follow!
Great review, I like how you guys think about the audience who 1st saw this back in the day. I was one of them! There was no Jason in a mask, just a killer Mom. When I saw it in the theater back then it was, and still is a favorite slasher film. In my opinion, the best of the Friday movies!
Awesome reaction!!!! Can remember seeing this movie in the theater when it first came out. Even for 1980s standards everyone in the theater was quite surprised about WHO the real killer was in this movie. Literally no one was expecting the MOTHER and, to this day, just about everyone is not aware nor realizes that Jason and the hockey mask appear in the sequels.
"Chi, chi, chi; ha, ha, ha" in the film's score is actually "Ki, k,i ki; ma, ma, ma." It is meant to resemble Jason's voice saying "Kill, kill, kill; mom, mom, mom."
I was a junior in HS when this came out. Everyone saw it and I remember several girls being obsessed with it. I also remember people screaming at the final jump scare. This and the next two movies are OK and give you the final version of Jason.
I did my first stand-up comedy monologue in Orlando's first Comedy club. It was called The Funny Farm, and this was around 1986. My first ever monologue was all about how to survive a slasher film. One of the most important rules was to find the virgin and stay with them, because you get killed if you fuck around. The monologue was great, but it got even better when one of the other comedians got on a microphone in the back of the club and started doing the "Cha-cha-cha Ha-ha-ha" sounds from this movie. We hadn't planned for it. I din't ask for it. It became a regular part of the routine.
The jumpscares with Kevin Bacon in the bed and of course in the "last" scene are extremely effective and well placed. Very goofy acting but great atmosphere. The second and fourth one are pretty good too. A classic for many reasons. A simple horror movie but also an important movie for the genre.
Hey, Schmitts! Glad to have this one back! That first time I watched this, I remember laughing so much when Daniel says that confused "Who" after Pamela introduces herself, lol! I hope you continue with the sequels, at least the first four, and you simply _must_ watch the fanmade _Never Hike Alone_ afterwards! Off to check the _Body Snatchers_ !
Always remember the infamous Jason sound is Kill Ma and then just echoes. Such a great original story. Not to mention the classic ending of Jason jumping out of the lake is just pure Old School Horror Hollywood. Not to mention the great Tom Savini being behind the blood and effects, it's his hand on Kevin Bacon during that kill and the blood pump came off during the take, Tom's assistant took the pump and blew through it for the gurgling blood shot. Btw I hope you both are doing great
I graduated from high school on Friday the 13th, 1980. I've always had good luck with the number 13. And especially usually on Friday the 13th. I always remember as a 7 or 8 year old. On my way to school I found a tiny black kitten on Friday the 13th. The two boys I recently made friends with. As we were walking and goofing off on the way to school. The other two boys ran off screaming black cat. I picked it up and went to the nearest hour way up on a hill top. A teary eyes really old lady came to the door. It turned out it was her kitten. I was new to the neighborhood and school. So I rushed off. My principal was waiting outside for me. The sweet old lady had called the school. And told him I rescued her kitty. So the principal was cool with me. I think that old lady always brought me good luck maybe after that.
A few years ago they made a PC game of Friday the 13th and I enjoyed watching people play it together because it's a online multiplayer game where 1 player gets to be Jason the killer and the other players get to be the counselors with the goal to hide and survive. It was really trending for a while, I don't know how many play it today though
Fun Fact: Kevin Bacon's first film was Animal House, where he played a one of the members of the rival fraternity under Neidemeyer. He was responsible for the classic line: Thank you Sir may I have another.
Excellent reaction to this classic and beloved masterpiece. I grew up watching the Friday the 13th films in theaters as a kid as they came out during the 80s & 90s. All of them do have a special place in my heart as I continue to revisit some of them every October. Don’t expect all of them to be as good as the first one. Some are good, some are not so much. But regardless of what your take is on each one going forward. I hope you can appreciate the progression in story and the ride they all take you on.
Guys , the jump scene at the end is classic. As i watched it this woman seated behind me was on the edge of her seat and literally screamed in my right ear and scared the shit out of me as a literally jumped to my feet. I was sitting in the middle of the theater. I waited until everyone left before I left so no one could see me or recognize me later 😂
I remember seeing this movie at my local library when I was little (younger than 10 years old). For some odd reason, I was so interested in watching it that I begged my older brother to check out the video for me since I didn't have a library card at the time. After watching it, I was so scared that I refused to touch the video and ask my brother to return it to the library.
Jason wasn't intended to be the killer in the first film. They did a retcon in the 2nd film establishing that he actually hadn't drowned at a child, and instead just lived off the lank like a hillbilly.
I live in New Jersey. I recently visited the filming locations of the movie. The Cemetary is exactly the same plus other locations, Camp Crystal Lake does exist in a city in New Jersey Called Napatcong the Lake where the movie was shot is in Blairstown Where the diner and the underpass that Annie walked under is located the Cemetary is located in a small town right next to Blairstown called Hope both in New Jersey take note the sign at the Cemetary is called Hope Cemetary. Part 3 is my favorite. You will know why.
Jason Voorhees and the Friday the 13th films are unique within the slasher genre. If you take for example Freddy, Myers or Leatherface..these icons were always who they were in their movies. Jason on the other hand did not start the franchise and got his hockeymask in part 3. Jason is a character that keeps evolving. After part IV he became a zombie and later on in X became a cyborg. Among many famous slasher heroes, Jason still remains a bit more than just a guy in a mask. ( great reaction! Thanks!)
Kevin Bacon was in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) Definitely worth a watch as one of the first college campus comedies, and directed by John Landis (An American Werewolf in London, Trading Places) . Also the character 'Flounder' has a way of saying 'Hello' that seems strangely familiar.
Did you all see Scream yet? Now i have to look back into your reactions. Glad the twist to it being Jason's mom wasn't spoiled for you. Love your reactions. Hope baby Schmitt is doing well.
This movie was intended to be a tribute to the movie "Psycho" from the 1960s. Victor Miller, the original writer for this movie, never intended for his movie to have multiple sequels.
Sleep away camps were pretty much like this camp. I was 9 years old when this came out & definitely already going away to camp. Ours was named "Camp Trees" ( but all the cabins were named after birds) Camp Trees looked almost exactly like that camp. There is nothing in the cabins but beds.....the building with the showers and toilets is in the center of all the cabins.......yes you have to keave the cabin to go to the bathroom & yes it was pitch bkack out & you needed a flashlight. It is insane that we were 8,9,10 & up out in the middle of the woods with absolute strangers for a week or two......no phones to call home (just letters & post cards) 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 That shit is absolutely rfkn crazy to have been the norm. Even a non murderous camp experience like the movie "Meatballs" (1979- Bill Murray is a young camp counselor) is an insane thing to contemplate in modern times. Do parents still ship 8 year olds off to hangout with strangers in the woods for two weeks in the summer?😂
I enjoyed watching this again and am hoping you've re-upped it because you are doing Part 2 soon, also hope Scream 3 is on the cards. Wow, I have been subscribed for about 3 years now, what great time I had here religiously watching every reaction, you got me through some times and stayed true to your content quality. "I'm your friend to the end"...Chucky 2 reaction soon? 😁
I'm writing that i bought the 2020 Shout Factory and Scream Factory 16 discs Friday the 13th Blu-ray Boxset. I can assure you that you really get your money's worth when it comes to special features and there's 22 audio commentaries and two special features discs too.
It would've been 10x better if they'd given us periodic introductions to more various townsfolk including Pam Vorhees. A pool of suspects to consider. Pam could've worked at the diner, had a line or two, nobody would've suspected her. Instead they just had a reveal at the end. Here's the killer, someone we've never seen before. We do get 5 minute solo scenes of making instant coffee though. It all worked out. I love these movies.
i dont know the lore but I think Jason didnt actually die but he was driven mad and spent the last 25 years living in the woods and at the camp. his mom being killed made him into a killer.
Clearly you need to watch Scream.... "there are rules..."😂 You'd also know who the killer is, Jason doesn't turn up til the sequel. Loving your reaction Vids, thanks for the work put into these🥰the dream about blood is Fiver from Water Ship Down, a prophecy of doom if they don't leave!
It's crazy to see these older slasher movies and the "tropes" seem old hat - but these are the movies that CREATED them! wow The theater audience would have had NO IDEA what was going to happen. weird. PS Kevin had a small role in Animal House, which was the 70s, and Footloose was mid80s(ish).
This was referenced in Scream. If you guys remember, Drew Barrymore’s character gets asked, “What’s the name of the killer in Friday the 13th” She answers, “Jason” several times but Ghost Face corrects her and tell her it’s Jason’s mother.
If you both haven't already, definitely recommend catching tge sequels. This movie mixes Psycho, Carrie (with that jump scare at the end) and Halloween.
Freddy and Jason are supernatural. In fact, I wholly recommend the Freddy vs Jason movie! The first movie holds up surprisingly well as a standalone movie, much like the original Halloween. The later movies are fun for the fans, Jason X is probably my favorite.
I love how the twist of Jason's mom being the killer just evolved over time because now people go in expecting Jason and a hockey mask
I love how Scream ruined it for me back in 1996.
And that's why reactors need to see Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street BEFORE Scream (which is a meta parody of those movies) but so many of them stupidly watch Scream first. 🤷
The hockey mask doesn't come in to play until the third movie.
At the time it wasn’t a twist at all. People went to see a slasher and we knew nothing of Jason.

Fun times! :)
One of our friends had just attended college with actress Laurie Bartram, who had played Brenda in the movie before going to college. When the scene came onscreen where she was playing strip Monopoly in that sexy underwear, all he could do was gaze at the movie with a 'deer in the headlights' expression, muttering lustfully under his breath, "Wow, that's Laurie!" Fun times, indeed.... :)
The thumbnail of Sam terrified!😂💀
Let's be honest here, 29:29 is what we came for
I've already been to 4 other reactions just for this Jumpscare
Hahaha Sam said Freddy comes while your asleep. And doesn’t even have the decency to clean up afterwards.
I like that Kevin Bacon actor, I hope we see more of him in the future lol
I got a good feeling about that boy. Hell, maybe he’ll even have a connection game named after him.
Pfft. Probably won't even get enough roles for anyone to even link other actors to any movie he'd be cast in. You could practically make a game out of it with some other actors, but not him.
This movie was released when I was a senior in high school. It was so fun to see this in the theater! No idea there would be so many sequels to follow!
I was 9 and saw this in the theater -- so, lots of nightmares that night.
Great review, I like how you guys think about the audience who 1st saw this back in the day. I was one of them! There was no Jason in a mask, just a killer Mom. When I saw it in the theater back then it was, and still is a favorite slasher film. In my opinion, the best of the Friday movies!
Happy Friday the 13th
24:29 is a great impression of an Owl. 😜
This was Kevin Bacon's second film, his first was a small part in Animal House which I highly recommend.
The camp where this was filmed is in New Jersey and it still exists and still operates today.
Cool reaction as always Schmitt & Samantha, you both have a great weekend
There were so many movies with Jason as the killer, people sometimes forget it was his mother in the 1st movie.
I am writing this to help out tbr Schmitt and Samantha and this video and this channel with the algorithm 🥰❤️✌️☺️
My favorite part is when they do the thing, you know.
I was a junior in HS when this came out. Everyone saw it and I remember several girls being obsessed with it. I also remember people screaming at the final jump scare. This and the next two movies are OK and give you the final version of Jason.
Belated congrats on baby!!
Friday the 13th Part II is an absolutely perfect Camp Slasher. Baghead Jason 😚👌 He doesn't het his infamous Hockey Mask until Part III.
Happy Friday the 13th!
There is an actual lake. I believe in Michigan that has a replica Jason you dive & can see. The water is dark & it just appears.
Pamela was under the bed the entire time Jack banged Marcy.
You guys must continue with the series
I graduated from High School on Thursday the 12th, 1980 and saw this the next night.
This was his 5th film. Still early in his career. Still many Togo before plains trains and automobiles
Can't wait for y'all to watch the next movies. Wonderful summary of this movie. Thanks.
I really hope you watch more of the series! Especially up to part 7!
TBR, you came up with a way better theory on the spot than they ever did.
Sammantha at 29:59.....lol 😂she's had enough!
One of the greatest theme songs of all time.
Friday the 13th 3D (part 3) has the greatest special effects that i have ever seen.
I love the surprise when the killer is revealed, especially if the reactors have already seen ''Scream''!
I have been a Friday the 13th fan since I was a kid. I recommend all of them even the bad ones.
Happy Friday The 13th 🩸🩸🩸🩸
We have but we watched this first! Just re-uploading now after it was taken down
This movie was intended to be a tribute to the movie "Psycho" from the 1960s.
All through your intro, I’m thinking, “You have no idea what you’re in for…” 😊
Get ready for Part II guys.
The 4th one has always been my favorite👍
Great review. You just made up for Temple of Doom, guys!!! 😅😅
i dont know the lore but I think Jason didnt actually die but he was driven mad and spent the last 25 years living in the woods and at the camp. his mom being killed made him into a killer.
TBR & Samantha are the voice of reasoning, channeling the opinions of audiences questioning the actions of clueless characters in slasher films.
Happy Friday the 13th.
Pls do part 2!
My family and I saw this in 2005-2006, and it messed up so bad, my mom couldn't sleep for a week!
You are in for a ride. Parts 2, 3 & 4 are great.
All the movies are worth a good watch through at least once
It's crazy to see these older slasher movies and the "tropes" seem old hat - but these are the movies that CREATED them! wow The theater audience would have had NO IDEA what was going to happen. weird. PS Kevin had a small role in Animal House, which was the 70s, and Footloose was mid80s(ish).
This was such an amazing movie which makes it so sad when you see what happens to the franchise as it goes along.
Enjoyed the whole video ❤
This was referenced in Scream. If you guys remember, Drew Barrymore’s character gets asked, “What’s the name of the killer in Friday the 13th” She answers, “Jason” several times but Ghost Face corrects her and tell her it’s Jason’s mother.
Yes! Thankfully we watched this before Scream. This is a re-upload 😊
@@samantha_schmitt oh cool
If you both haven't already, definitely recommend catching tge sequels. This movie mixes Psycho, Carrie (with that jump scare at the end) and Halloween.
Freddy and Jason are supernatural. In fact, I wholly recommend the Freddy vs Jason movie!
The first movie holds up surprisingly well as a standalone movie, much like the original Halloween. The later movies are fun for the fans, Jason X is probably my favorite.
Friday the 12th Part 2 is the best of all the Friday the 12th movies.
Nobody ever expects the plot twist lmao
