Timothy Dalton was James Bond. Twice. But his two outings are always forgotten by everyone and he was replaced by Pierce Brosnan, who became as well known as Bond as Sean Connery was.
I love them all... well, I tolerate Moore with some enjoyment... but Dalton remains my favourite for capturing the essence of Fleming's Bond.
I 💖ed him in "License to Kill." And the fact that they actually explored the friendship between James Bond and Felix Leiter, was very satisfying.
Such a shame actually. Living Daylights might not have been anything special, but License to Kill is one of my favourite Bond movies.

Dalton's Bond was certainly one of the ones that got the short end of the stick, mostly because he was in the role at a time when the franchise went through a bit of a paradigm shift/existential crisis due to internal wranglings with the producers and studio, but he did prove sort of influential on the darker Bond seen in the Craig era. His tenure is certainly remembered more fondly now than Brosnan or Lazenby or most of Moore's.

here in the UK it actually isnt strange for a village to not have had a murder in a long time, where i live there hasnt been a recorded murder for 75 years

If anything a murder happening 20 years ago seems shockingly recent to me for a village like that. The last time someone was killed by another humanwhere I live was during WWII.

The foreshadowing in the Cornetto trilogy is absolutely next level. They literally spoil this movie in the first five minutes -
“You can’t just make people disappear”
“Yes I can, I’m the chief inspector”
Also at the village fete shooting range the Doctor says "Take out all the little people, you get to waltz off with the cuddly monkey" (ie Nick Frost's character).
And, EVERYTHING Danny asks if Nick did an action, in the second half, they do accomplish.
"Everyone and their mums are packing round here"
"Oh yeah? Like who?"
"Farmers"
"Who else?"
"Farmers mums"
First people Nicholas takes on when he comes back are a farmer and his mum.
"Gonna put a call to... Aaron A. Aaronson?"

Also "fascist" and "hag", although I just realised these are just callbacks, not really foreshadowing
Edgar wright spent a lot of time with the police for research for this film and they said that 80% of what police do is paperwork, so Wright thought it would be funny to make these super action sequences with him doing paperwork like when he clicks the two pens it's like he's cocking guns
He said his main purpose with this film was to make the UK police look badass for once, the way American films do, which of course becomes an actual theme in the story as well.
Never understod the Word "cocking" it sounds like something completely diffrent for me 😂
Sanford is also the name of the fictional town used for police training exercises.
I just love that it draws attention to the more mundane side of policework and makes it look epic. Like a regular cop film but more realistic in its coolness.
Even the part where Angel had to have the translators was because of an actual cop he interviewed told him he needed one when he was transferred from London to the North England area until he got use to the accents.
You know a Director is good when big actors are happy to do a small 3-minute part! Cate Blanchett was willing to be uncredited and wearing a full-body crime-scene suit and face mask where the only recognisable thing is her eyes and voice playing Janine, which I thought was one of the best jokes in the movie, so it clearly worked! =D

I noticed that for The Cornetto Trilogy you are giving all the credit to Edgar Wright. Shaun of the Dead was actually Simon Pegg's and Nick Frost's idea that they pitched to Edgar Wright because they had worked with him previously and were friends. Simon Pegg also helped write all three of the movies. 🙂
I'll upvote this. They are pinning too many ribbons on Edgar Wright, and completely missing out that Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are a lot lot more than just actors. And while I had fun watching their reactions, I also notice that these two have reacted/replied to comments they found favorable, and not to yours. Which means they cannot take criticism. Makes no sense for me to leave a like for this video.

This is a serious contender for my all-time favorite comedy. It has such great writing, so many little details, and cleverly plays with action movie cliches. "He's NOT Judge Judy and executioner!" is forever burned into my memory.

this movie is one of the few movies that makes me proud to be british. whenever i need a pick me up or i'm crocheting i'll watch it in the background
British humor is definitely something else (and I haven't the slightest bit of shame saying that as a French). When I see this movie or Good Omens I'm just glad that they were made by British people and not by Hollywood, you can clearly feel the difference.

As I always write, I think Shaun of the Dead is the most successful at the genre it's tackling. Hot Fuzz is the most fun and the one most people will enjoy by a wide right mile. The World's End is my personal favorite and the most mature of the three, but doesn't connect to the other two as much; it does, but it's more subtle overall.

you might not know but the old man who is head of the Neighbourhood Watch is Edward Woodward. He played the lead in the classic movie The Wicker Man (later woefully remade with Nicolas Cage). He also had a TV show in America called The Equalizer
It's funny as this movie is very similar to the Wicker Man in terms of plot
you forgot the fantastic Callan.
Another minor reference is that Nicholas Angels' police number (as seen on his shoulder pads) is 777 (you can see it at 3:13 while he is walking through the office). The number 7 is often considered God's number while 666 is considered the mark of the beast/devil's number. Nicholas being an "Angel" since he has three 7s.

I watch so much British television, mostly chat shows and panel game shows with comics, so many of these actors are familiar. The female police office is Olivia Colman, she’s since won an Academy award and done great dramatic work, she’s such a great wit. The tall man who reported the missing swan is a frequent collaborator with Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant. The man behind the police front desk is Bill Bailey, another comic and musician, who recently won Strictly Come Dancing ballroom dance tv competition.
Merchant played the Gestapo officer in Jojo Rabbit as well.
Fun fact: almost all of the Neighbourhood Watch members are veterans of stage and screen, but many of them are known for their roles in horror films and as villains. To wit...
Edward Woodward (Professor Weaver) famously played another overly-straitlaced cop who found himself investigating sinister doings revolving around a fanatical cult of villagers in the movie The Wicker Man, and was also the original lead of the TV series The Equaliser.
Timothy Dalton (Simon Skinner) was Neville Sinclair in The Rocketeer. He also appears as Rassilon in the Doctor Who story "The End of Time" and was James Bond in the late 80s.
Billie Whitelaw (Mrs. Cooper) was Mrs Blaylock, the Satanist nanny of Damien in The Omen, played Violet Kray (mother of Reg and Ronnie Kray) in The Krays opposite the Brothers Kemp, and the voice of Aughra, The Keeper of Secrets from The Dark Crystal.

Kenneth Cranham (Mr Reaper) was Dr. Philip Channard in Hellbound: Hellraiser II and Jimmy Price in Layer Cake.
Tim Barlow (Mr Treacher) was an ex-soldier who took up acting in the late 60s, mostly in small roles, but the reason he's playing Treacher is that he lost his hearing in the 1950s when testing a high velocity Muzzle Rifle for the British Army and was deaf until recently, when surgery to fit a cochlear implant allowed him to recover some of his hearing.
Julia Deakin (Mary Porter) was in Pegg and Wright's sitcom Spaced as Marsha the Landlady; her husband Ray's actor, Peter Wight, is best known (to me at least) as Brian the Secuity Guard from Mike Leigh's Naked, starring David Thewlis.
Patricia Franklin (Mrs Roper the shopkeeper) appears in the Winchester from Shaun of the Dead, and was a regularly appearing castmember in five of the Carry On films.
Rory McCann as "Lurch" is obviously the Hound from Game of Thrones but before all that, he appeared in commercials for Scott's Porage Oats.
And Alice Lowe (Tina the shopgirl) is in LOADS of stuff, but in particular she's known for Garth Mahenghi's Darkplace, the movies Sightseers and Prevenge (which she starred in, wrote and directed *WHILST HEAVILY PREGNANT*), and the Black Mirror interactive movie Bandersnatch.

Also, Jessica Hynes from Spaced/Shaun of the Dead was in Human Nature/Family of Blood as Joan Redfern, the love interest of "John Smith", and End of Time as her descendant Verity Newman.
Mr Treacher was in Destiny of the Daleks, and Bill Bailey was in The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe.

54:47 Talking of just getting jokes after watching this movie loads of times, I never got the Aaron A. Aaronson call-back until now because you had the subtitles on. Before I just couldn't understand the kid's accent.
It's actually four genres - action, horror and mystery whilst all the time being a comedy.
Every time I watch a reaction to this film, I have to go back and revisit the CinemaWins episodes on it-he does a super-deep dive into all of the plot callbacks, cameos, and little details that show just how genius this movie is.
The play they're doing is based on Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. I've yet to see a reactor catch onto that reference, since many of them are probably in your age range. R+J came out in 1996. Like other Luhrmann films, it used a modern soundtrack in relation to the time period. It's why they're singing "Say That You Love Me" by The Cardigans, it was one of the more popular songs from the soundtrack.

Yeah, that's a joke that didn't age well, but everyone's insistence in calling it "an homage to Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" and it turned out to be the DiCaprio movie version (which the title is stylized that way) is supposed to be a joke in and of itself. Now it just seems like the joke is its a terrible production.
Historically speaking, before surnames were a thing, families took on the name of their location or their profession - so, Skinner, Fisher, Merchant, etc, were common.

Yeah I laughed out loud at the "should be James Bond" comment directed at Timothy Dalton given that he actually was the fourth actor to play James Bond in the official film series.

is the world record for the quickest police chase scene.
The movie is somehow even funnier when pitch shifted down slightly. Angel sounds even more commanding, the villains sound even more menacing, and Danny sounds even more dopey.

@9:51 - ah, the inimitable Mr Bill Bailey as the Desk Sergeant(s) - comedian, panel show regular, musician. Had the pleasure of seeing him play Sonisphere Festival at Knebworth, headlining the second stage. Also, the guys who did the music for these montages, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, also did the song that opens the movie Baby Driver, also by Edgar Wright - Wright has said they're one of his favourite bands, irrc.
@5:05 - one that most Americans might not recognise, but the Inspector (the one who shows up inbetween Martin "Bilbo" Freeman and Bill "Davy Jones" Nighy) is played by Steve Coogan, known best in the UK for his role as Alan Partridge, his collaborations with Rob Brydon and director Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People, A Cock and Bull Story, the various iterations of The Trip), and in America for films like Night at the Museum, Tropic Thunder and The Other Guys. He also played Stan Laurel opposite John C Reilly in the biopic Stan & Ollie, parts of which were shot in my hometown; a very sweet and funny movie that I'd recommend to anyone interested in Laurel and Hardy's post-Hollywood career.
He was in the other guys so I think americans would still recognise him if they've seen that!

The Met police like this film because it shows what happens most of the time...Doing paperwork. They actually asked the supermarket Summerfield if they could film in the store...and they said yes. Great bit of publicity for the store. Now you have to watch "PAUL" with the two main characters in it...plus many quest stars from sci-fi.

Easily the best of the Cornetto trilogy, spoofing a wide variety of genres from Agatha Christie mysteries to 80s buddy cop action films, slasher killers and even Harry Potter. Obligatory for me to say in a comment section of this movie's reaction vid: THE GREATER GOOD! 😁

“This guy needs to be in James Bond or something”, lol. He’s way ahead of ya there. Timothy Dalton played 007 in the 80s/90s before Pierce Brosnan took over the role in the 90s.
Edgar Wright does the best transitions out of every director. They're always so seamless. And his writing is perfect. Rewatching his movies multiple times makes them even better every time you see them because his foreshadowing and callbacks are downright masterful. He's the best visual storyteller.
EDIT: Because of this movie, in my family, every time we hear the phrase "the greater good" on TV or literally anywhere, we repeat it.

Every time i forget how much I love Edgar Wright, I’ll see one of his films (or even a reaction video only including clips of a film) and i’m like “Oh yeah, I fucking love Edgar Wright movies”. Genuinely might be my favorite director. Perhaps his cinematography isn’t as “every-frame-a-painting” as a Denis Villenueve or whatever, but I consistently find myself THOROUGHLY enjoying every single aspect of Wright’s films. The editing/cutting choices, the writing, the casting, the music choices. It’s maybe one of the most guaranteed good times I can’t think of.
The Head of the Village Watch, was played by Edward Woodward, and his quote of "Oh, God NO!" at being blown up by the Sea Mine, is in direct reference to his same famous line in The Wicker Man. On the Blu Ray Extra's, you get to see the cartoon on the back of Danny's note book.
Really wished, that Disney left Edgar alone with the MCU Ant Man film, instead of driving him off it!
@33:00 - props to Simon Pegg for doing a significant amount of his own stuntwork on this; all the training you see him do in the intro (the firearms, sprinting, cycling, vehicles) was stuff he actually did train for, because they wrote these setpieces in where he has to demonstrate that he's a supercop, and it shows in the final film.
I can't believe I just caught the joke, George Merchant is the Fridge Magnate/magnet. Nick Angel is a friend of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg, he was the music supervisor for the film and his picture was the one for Sgt Popwell (big bushy beard). The other names were picked to be classic English names. For an earlier movie with Timothy Dalton, you could watch a James Bond movie, but I'd suggest Flash Gordon. Rev Shooter was Belloq in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Several of the other older actors are famous. The guy with the blunderbuss at the end was the lead in The Wicker Man, well worth watching if for nothing else than Christopher Lee in a dress. You should react to the British TV show Spaced, stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost
It's not Edgar Wright, but I think Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are also great in, Paul, a wonderful Sci-Fi/nerd satire with Seth Rogan and Sigourney Weaver.

A lot of the cast of these films, including Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright started out in a British comedy series called Spaced which is really good and has similar style of humour parodying lots of different film genres.
Cate Blanchett played Angel's ex girlfriend (the forensic officer from the beginning) and the Doctor's last words are the same as the ones he uttered in the original Wicker Man.

With the Cornetto trilogy, the colour of the Cornetto relates to the story. Red for blood Shaun of the Dead. Blue for cops in Hot Fuzz. Won’t spoil why it’s green in The World’s End.
Don’t think anyone else mentioned that the actor who played Michael (Yarp guy) was The Hound in Game of Thrones. Bob at the crime scene was Joe Cornish, who directed Attack the Block, and did the Adam & Joe Show with Adam Buxton who played Tim Messenger in this movie
Hot Fuzz is the very best of the trilogy, a truly masterful piece of work. Shaun of the dead was very much the genesis material which formed the identity with which the trilogy is based but lacks the finer master touches which make this second film so so great. Look forward to the final film Worlds End another great movie which moves in yet another direction.
Hi, I don't know if you know of the 1999-2001 TV sitcom SPACED (I've noticed that many Americans, even when fan of Edgar Wright, are not familiar with it). I'd really suggest to watch it if you like this style; as many other classic British sitcom it lasted for a 'record' 2 seasons, for a total of 14 episodes of 20 minutes. It won't take you too much time to enjoy it. It's the reason why this three (Pegg/Frost/Wright) became famous in the first place, it was the first big thing they did. Also, it's how this specific cinematic style was born (you'll even notice how it sort of gradually changes and more perfectly shapes in the course of the episodes).
The series is created and fully written by Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson (now Hynes), who are also the protagonists. Nick Frost only acts in it, playing as always Simon's best friend. Every other character is insanely bizarre and cartoonishly funny. Edgar Wright directed the entire show.
They didn't really ever work with Jessica Stevenson again (she later worked on a tons of other sitcoms, both as writer or actress), but she has a cameo in the last movie as Yvonne (at the beginning when they meet in the streets as the man in the car behind them dies, he says with shock "You bought a place?", that's a small nod to the series). In the show they play two random person, sort of out of job, who pretend to be a couple just to rent an apartment together and pay less money. It's really funny and the style is full of weird sci-fi, filmic, comic books and meta references.
Jessica and Simon are great together, they have a similar acting style, specially in awkward comedy moments, so I really suggest it if you like this sort of comedy and strong stylistic choices.

I will never understand being a fan of something and not seeking out more. It's like saying a musician is your favourite but being baffled when someone mentions a side project and showing no interest in checking it out when told.
It's a tv show made by the exact same gang. I wish I was unaware so I had this to discover all over again. I would immediately seek it out.
But I'm British, saw it's original run on channel 4 and was a fan of Big Train a BBC sketch show which introduced me to a lot of the people I saw in Spaced and cornetto trilogy like Pegg, Kevin Eldon (in this, Hot Fuzz) and Mark Heap (Spaced) also a young Nick Frost has a cameo or 2, who was Simon peggs flat mate at the time.
Highly recommend Spaced and Big Train. But especially Spaced.

@@booty2k Not to belittle every other show you've mentioned, but THE THICK OF IT, PEEP SHOW and ALAN PARTRIDGE are absolute masterpieces and "how-to-do-comedy-mastrerclass". I'm not from the UK, but I'm always surprised that this shows are not well known milerstones in other english-speaking countries. The thick of it is a perfectly written and structured sitcom (and acted), and yet these shows seems to be only known by comedians and writers.
@@bariton7578 Alan Partridge started as the sport pundit for a satirical news show in early 90s called The Day Today. It was written by Armando ianucci and Chris Morris among others. Also highly recommend although politics and topics will be dated.
Both of them went on to do excellent work.
Morris made Brasseye for channel 4. Again, highly recommended and highly controversial. Also has Simon pegg and Mark Heap cameos.
Morris has now transitioned into films with Four Lions and The Day shall come. Chris Morris is one of my personal heroes.
Armando stayed with the BBC and spun off Alan Partridge with Steve Coogan to make "Knowing me knowing you with Alan partridge" where Alan has acquired a chat show gig...that goes horribly. Multiple series, specials, audio books and even a movie all follow Alan through his career. In essentially real time.
His latest show This Time with Alan partridge was worth the wait and went exactly as a live daytime gig would go for Alan. Disastrous.
Ianuuci also made his own show (Armando ianucci show), Time Trumpet and yes, The Thick of it.
Peep show is by producers who went on to do The Inbetweeners and most recently the show of What we do in the shadows, Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong.

Hot Fuzz is my most favourite comedy... so so good. The World's End is also good. The Last Night in Soho is one of my favourites of 2021. It is not so obvious Edgar Wright movie but it is visually stunning. And it has a spectacular soundtrack. I know some people were not big on a 3rd act but I still find it very good.
PS: Also I find it funny that you said that Timothy Dalton should play James Bond... due to the fact that in fact he WAS James Bond in 2 movies.

You should react with the commentary on but that would require the DVD. I love all the work Edgar, Nick, Simon, etc. put into setting up the jokes and story. The little things make it so awesome. This is my absolute favorite movie of all time.
When he turns around with those guns strapped to his back, they imply angel wings, a nod to his name.
Simon Skinner is such a great character. Nothing sinister happens at all for first half of the movie, and yet every time you see him, you're convinced that he's a supervillain of some kind. Some crime is happening somewhere in the world, and he's responsible.
Additionally, the motive Sgt. Angel came up with is totally a movie motive, full of intrigue, but the true motives are actually very true for real life. Killing someone because you don't like their laugh or their house is a very, very real motive, sadly. Essentially, imagine that every time you get annoyed by someone, you murder them, and that's what it's like in Sanford.
It's the only fight with James Bond, the Queen, the Hound, and Montgomery Scott. Plus the guys from Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Wicker Man.
This might be the only film were an old Lady gets fly kicked in the face, and in the context of the scene...it's actually deserved lmao

The outtakes for the Cornetto trilogy are hysterical. Timothy Dalton's in Hot Fuzz has to be my favorite.
I really think you guys need to review Spaced. Although it was written by Simon Pegg & Jessica Hynes (she had a small part in SotD)I think it really shows where Edgar Wright got his style from.

The final film in the Cornetto Trilogy is MARVELOUS! More character development, more surprises, it's very worth watching. I'm so looking forward to you watching that one too.

Often described as England's smallest city,[5][6] it is actually second smallest to the City of London in area and population, but unlike London it is not part of a larger urban agglomeration." So there's a lot of shots in this that had to mask how big "Sanford" actually is. It's been used as a filming location a few other times, usually in period pieces; the cathedral doubled for Southwark Cathedral in an episode of Doctor Who.
I only watched this movie one time, but after watching this Reaction, this is seriously one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I don't know how I'm just realizing it. Fucking 11/10 film
@58:34 - Ninetailbrush makes an interesting and astute point here, and I think it's definitely one that the movie is actively engaging with - sort of. Most of the cop movies that Hot Fuzz uses as a frame of reference have a pretty simplistic moral code: they are fundementally about good vs evil, chaos vs order. But the moral of Hot Fuzz is a little more complex: there is no chaos vs order because there's only the "benevolent" by-the-book order that Angel represents and the shadowy sinister order of Frank and the NWA. Angel's arc is partly "learning to switch off" but also recognising that whilst being Lawful Good is all well and good, the Letter of The Law - the vocab guidelines, the procedures, his training - will only get him so far; if he wants to counter the fascism and Lawful Evil that is at the heart of Sanford, he has to represent not just the Letter but the Spirit of The Law too; riding in on a white stallion like the sheriff coming to clean up the town, something that's hinted at in the first scene. There are hints at the end with them racing off to bother some hippies messing with the recycling that Angel has the potential to become a fascist himself, but overall the movie makes a very good case for his moral fortitude.
@59:22 - and James following it up with an interesting point about British vs American comedies. Part of the disconnect he describes is definitely the result of American comedies being more based around improvisation and ad-libbing onset and building moments around those bits, rapidly firing off jokes one after another - the "throw spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks" method, if you will - whereas British comedy tends to be geared a lot more towards precision engineering a given joke to within an inch of its life so that it lands perfectly - the "spaghetti cannon" method; Wright's approach is geared towards the rapid-fire approach of American comedy but with the precision of British comedy: the "spaghetti heavy machinegun". ;)
Jon Favreau, who directed Elf, also directed Iron Man 1&2, and you can see that loosey-goosey, improv driven approach to the plot, characters and gags in those films too. Some of that was allegedly on purpose - Favreau cited Robert Altman as an inspiration for his directing style on those films - but it's also partly a result of the way they were being produced at the time, i.e. fast and cheap.
Now, compare that to the work of Sam Raimi - whose work was a big inspiration to Edgar Wright - and you can see how Hot Fuzz has more in common with his work: the physical and dialogue gags are more deliberate and tight, the shots are more kinetic. It's sacrificing naturalism but it's gaining stylism.

This movie is just perfection, it's just so unique how Edgar filmed it, I think I've watched it about a thousand times lol it's a black comedy that can't be beaten which makes me proud to be British.
