If you had a friend or a sibling to play with, this game was actually pretty fun and one thing that it did have that no other game has featured is the What-If Yardrat saga which was a cool touch. This game was basically a very bad prototype of DBZ Kakarot. Also it was the first game to actually have Future Gohan with one arm
There's one thing I like about this game, just one. The bit of the narration in the opening cutscene that goes "...Thus setting in motion a chain of events that will take Goku far beyond the world he has sworn to protect, and force him to test his might against the most powerful villains the universe has ever known! Will Goku prevail against these deadly foes? It's all up to you, as the journey continues..." It gives me chills and legitimately even to this day hypes me up beyond most any other DB game out there. and then it dies with a whimper as I remember I'm playing Sagas.

13:33 Also, I would like to point out that they technically did give certain characters like Goku, Gohan, Trunks and Vegeta an ascended super Saiyan form. For example, Goku (ascended) has the standard Super Saiyan form that grants both a speed and power boost, except the only drawback is its meter draining speed. Both Cell Games and Saiyan Armor Goku have the "mastered" Super Saiyan form, which also grants a power boost, an extended timer, but no speed boost. Goku, Trunks and Gohan have separate versions that include both forms, while Vegeta is the only character to have the form without the speed boost, which in that case, would be considered as Vegeta's "Grade 2" form. You can also see a slight difference in the way their aura is displayed when playing as either Goku (ascended) or Goku (Cell Games).
I absolutely loved this game for what it is. The music's great, the voice clips that play occasionally, the UI and the super Saiyan mechanic...I love it. I remember having an absolute blast playing this game as a kid--still do to this day. Also can I just say, I freaking love the character icons, Idk, there's just something about them that makes me happy. It might just be the fact that some characters have extra icons for when they transform, which I find that to be really cool.

I was an Xbox kid growing up, so this was my only dragon ball z game, I remember my brother and I playing it for hours. I still hold it in high regard despite it not being great just because of the memories
My first DBZ game remeber playing this with my brother on PS2. I got nostalgia for the music lol and really liked the little narrated slide shows between levels
I have some fond memories of this game. I was around 4 years old when it came out, and played it a year after. I always did the “infinite combo” cheese by just pressing the square button 3 times, wait a second, and do it again. Was it repetitive? Yeah. Is it a good game? Kinda. But I still enjoy this game regardless. I remember my mom got me a silver PS2 along with the game and I was so happy to play it. Years later, I got the game on an Emulator and beat it, confused as to why there wasn’t a Buu Saga. But now, 23 years of age, I understand why the game wasn’t perceived as the greatest game. Still, hearing the soundtrack takes me back…
2 months late but As someone who never saw the anime and experienced the series for the first time through games like these, I really enjoyed the "cutscenes" for being anime clips Felt like a way for me to watch the show when I couldn't (no cable, and before streaming services were a thing)
Man my brother and I used to play the shit outta this game. I mostly remember using a cheat code to unlock all the characters, and destroying everyone as Broly. I actually have very fond memories of Sagas.
I remember getting stuck on the SSJ Goku vs Frieza fight as a kid because my form would run out and then Frieza would just completely own me. Once I recruited my brother for help, though, we completely flipped the script and kicked Frieza's ass! One of my favorite memories involving this game.
Great review! Love your work. I got this game when it came out and played it co op with a couple friends. Even at the time we recognized it was kinda bad but we had a blast anyway.
There is something so uncanny about the animations in this game I could never put my finger on, like you were playing as a clay fighter or rubber man or something lol. The limbs always looked like sausages to me and for some reason watching your video brought back so many memories of this lol. I honestly loved this game and was my first ever DBZ game other than Ultimate Battle on PS1
The execution might not have been great, but the idea was. I remember having a blast with this game with my friends. The only DBZ game that tried something similar is Kakarot, but it's more of an RPG than a beat 'em up.
This was the first game I bought myself on the ps2 and it was so much fun. Especially if you had a friend over back in the day. But still fun to play solo. Makes me wanna find a ps2 again and buy my childhood games
Look i know its not a good game. But i would be lying if i said i didn't love this game. My little brother and i used to run through the levels as Broly and Bardock. Also the cutscenes are amazing. Narration was so fun.
This was one of my favourite games as a kid and played it with a friend of mine, I gotta say the co-op is always fun and we'd always try to do fun combos. Sometimes it just devolved into spamming blasts, but yknow. We'd particularly play the jeice and burter fight over and over a lot since it was something of a 2 on 2
I remember playing through this game a few times as a kid. I craved Dragon Ball so much that would play anything associated with the franchise, including this and even Taiketsu (ugh, luckily I gave that one up pretty quickly).
One of my favorite things to do in this game was spamming the super moves in the air and using the instant transmission technique basically replicating the instant kamehameha on enemies
I think this was my first DBZ game and I loved it it was very fun and idk why people hated it I played it with my cousin and it was amazing and the Gohan vs cell one gave me PTSD it took me 1 or 2 weeks to finish it😅
lowkey the slide show clip things were my favorite part of the game as a kid. Not having access to the full show I watched those over and over while I drew stuff.
This was one of my only dragon ball games growing up. Love it to death, just wish it could of been WAYY more Fun than what was delivered, but gotta play your Cards no matter what.
I remember there being a glitch during the fight between Vegeta and Frieza when Piccolo was arriving. Once it would reach a certain point on the bar up top, Frieza would transform into his second form, but when I played it, the first form stuck around as the second form frieza came in, so I had to fight two friezas at once as Vegeta
You know, there is no snake way in this game. Which is weird because I feel like I remember that being a part of this game too... but it's not. Which totally threw me for a loop, but whatever game you're thinking of, and I was thinking of before I played this that featured Snake Way, this isn't it.
I think the reason so many of these games tend to skip Buu is because it would just mean you need to inflate the budget a lot because covering Buu is basically a new game. like between the Saiyan arc and Cell arc we reuse characters a lot, and the only new characters are the villains and Trunks and like... King Kai. Mostly its just the Z fighters and whoever they are fighting. but for Buu we have a lot of new heroes to deal with and some of them have mechanical implications like do you want to have Goten and Trunks or just Gotanks, or do you want Gotanks at all or limit them to a special move, how about Vegito? Will that beg questions about Gogeta? How many Buus do you want? What things do you adapt and what do you skip? Cant forget to make a fresh batch of models for SS3 Goku, Krillian, Dende, Vegeta, probably a few for Gohan and if you do that, do you want to show Goku doing the spirit bomb and credits roll or do the 5 years later thing? If so well now we need more new models for everyone and a Pan and Uub model now.... I think they should do those things. But I can see a developer saying "Ok tell you what... lets just do Saiyan to Cell and if the game sells well we can do Buu"
I wonder if the Yardrat mission was meant to be a Bardock mission. Maybe they realized that the space part of his story was too difficult to add in engine or budget didn't allow for it. Then they took what they had already done and put it in a spot that made sense.
I never understood the hate for sagas. I loved it as a kid and really wished they had made a sequel. They took some chances by changing the gameplay style and that should be respected. Hopefully in future games developers will implement some different gameplay than just arena fighters
People say Ultimate Tenkaichi was the worst game (I can’t wait for you to review it) but they never played Sagas and Ohhhh boy it makes UT look like a masterpiece💀
I feel like this game got alot of hate because it was Misunderstood. I think this was supposed to be a take on 3D platforming...in a way. Not meant to rival or challenge the Budokai series or be be considered 1 of the flagship gaming IP's for Dragon Ball. What I can't defend the devs on though, is the implentation of the idea of a 3D platformer. A few years later, the release of Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo showcased how to bring that idea for a DB game to life. But yeah, it is what is. Unfortunately Sagas was a mistake to learn from, So I guess that's the Silver lining of its legacy. I'm sure it was moderately entertaining for some players if they had nothing better to play and had to settle on the bare minimum and overlook alot of bugs and glitches and jank in this game.
for me this game was the only adventure game that was pretty well-rounded it was almost the equivalent of legacy of Goku but on a top-tier console and games were a different thing back in the day it wasn't always cinematic or always with a serious plot or tone a game could be goofy and still be enjoyed and I actually also had a great time with it
Sagas was phenomenal on release. Does it hold up today, no. But was it a banger at the time? Absolutely. The combat was totally unique for a DBZ game, but was similar to other games at the time. Never had a single bad time with Sagas.
Nobody forgot this game bro 😂…and among fans it doesn’t suck. It is an old game. For one. It was super popular at the time. For 2. Only non actual fans don’t like it.
I actually share your feelings on this one. It is not a good game... but lord if I didn't enjoy & have fun with it it. Too few games in this series (ESP At the time) are character action/adventure games. Most were and still are fighting games, or at least centered on it with some other stuff bolted on. I actually appreciated (and still do) the fact that it was more focused on being a Adventure game. Sadly this left the fighting being tacked on. As a 3D Beat Em Up Adventure, Sagas wasn't good... but it at least scratched the itch it set out to. For that reason I have a soft spot for it, despite it being a bad game.
the reason why the characters look bad was because the main artist was oda, who didn't have much time since he was still writing one piece, the music however has never been released officially so nobody knows the actual composer
I hope you do the legacy of goku games one day they aren't mind blowing top of the line games but for the time it was a really fun and portable top down arpg made by western devs
Sagas gets a lot of hate when it's mentioned. People who say negative comments about it didn't play it 'till the end or didn't play it much to understand the gameplay. This game was super fun since I played it with my younger brother. I recommend it with a friend.
I hated the bugs & errors in it. Having to reset over & over in boss fights. It was a fun game & i liked yhe combos (if I don't cheese it. Two punches, then stop & repeat will destroy all enemies. It was punches or kcks 🤔). I enjoyed it more after i unlocked everyone. And i wished it was longer or had more modes
This game might’ve been pretty ass, but it was the first ever DBZ game younger me played due to being the first one released on Xbox, which I owned before a PS2. And so it at least gets bonus points for that.
I remember the weekend i got this game, Saturday i had an old friends birthday party where i fell and scratched the fuck out of my left knee, i was still bummed out about it Sunday, and my dad took me to walmart and told me to pick out the game i was talking to him about and it was this game, i was maybe 9? Then. I absolutely loved this game. I binge played it that Sunday night. 😂😂😂 got it on Gamecube. I played this a lot back then. And i was surprised learning many years later this was like hated. Yeah it wasnt the best but i just thought the whole like walking thru the story was kinda cool, even tho i hella loved the Budokai games more ofc.
very small thought here but THANK YOU for calling it "Ascended Super Saiyan" instead of "Super Saiyan Second Grade" or "Super Saiyan Grade 2" bc honestly those names are worse than Super Saiyan Blue. 💀
Try playing ultimate Tenkaichi I loved it this was one of my fav DBZ games and the Kinect version was a bit trying it made me sore but it was really fun
An action/adventure game set in the Dragon Ball universe is such a missed opportunity but good fuck don't just do the story because the actual manga is 90% boss battles. There's so many timeskips they could have used to tell an original story so that it doesn't feel weird that Goku is running around fighting Saibaman on his way to Raditz.

Calling DBZ Sagas a Collect-A-Thon cause it has collectibles is like calling Banjo-Kazooie a Beat-em Up cause you can punch enemies
True
Its one of the two things you can do in this game. I don't think pseudo collect athon is inacurate.

for me this game was the only adventure game that was pretty well-rounded it was almost the equivalent of legacy of Goku but on a top-tier console and games were a different thing back in the day it wasn't always cinematic or always with a serious plot or tone a game could be goofy and still be enjoyed and I actually also had a great time with it
Sagas was phenomenal on release.
Piccolo's ears in his character icon.. that is all.
I loved this game back in the day frfr
This was fun for its time
I hope you do the legacy of goku games one day they aren't mind blowing top of the line games but for the time it was a really fun and portable top down arpg made by western devs
Oh I plan to
Sagas gets a lot of hate when it's mentioned.
I remember this on GameCube and remember loving it but also being frustrated with the clunky movement
i remember liking this but i think it was too hard for me to beat even though i was min-maxing tf out of budokai tenkaichi 3 and older games
Wow I never realized how similar it was to tak gameplay wise
This game soundtrack is 🤌💋💯
Thats he purpose of a game that you have fun
Yeah I forgot this game was a thing.
very small thought here but THANK YOU for calling it "Ascended Super Saiyan" instead of "Super Saiyan Second Grade" or "Super Saiyan Grade 2" bc honestly those names are worse than Super Saiyan Blue. 💀
AND THE WAY YOU PRONOUNCE "KAMEHAMEHA WAVE" we got a true Dragon Ball fan on our hands here
This video was KEWL
I couldn’t find the capsule I was such a noob when I was a kid so I didn’t get too far unfortunately
Can you do infinite world next!!!
I'm doing the Tenkaichi games, and then I'm doing that one!
Try playing ultimate Tenkaichi I loved it this was one of my fav DBZ games and the Kinect version was a bit trying it made me sore but it was really fun
So, *this* is the one game that remembers the Pendulum Room exists as the perfect rematch opportunity? Booo, boo I say!
Honestly if they just made the animations not like they shat their pants I'd love it a tons more.

Tbh, this game was a good first abridged version of the show to show my friend to get him into it. It worked. The co-op was janky but fun
I absolutely fucking love this game idgaf what anyone says lmaoo it will always be my jam😂❤
This game needs a remake of sorts.
Maybe it’s just me, but the characters’ fighting movements seem zesty
