What a shame that the brilliant Armando Iannucci wasn't given more time. He really has so much to say about the state of modern politics, power, communications ...etc...and would have easily filled a double session. Please have him back Stephen Colbert!

He's absolutely right about the furniture in the State Department. I interviewed for a job there back in the 1990s, and it's shocking how the place looks like a barely-maintained poor district elementary school in the 1970s. The floor tiles were cracked and looked like they had been there since the war (1812, not WW2). The paint was that sickly green that you see in TV shows set in the 1950s. Everything gave the impression that no money was spent on maintaining the office building and you worried that you migth be breathing asbestos with every breath. Shocking.

armando is a genius & like all geniuses he is scottish & fiercely proud of the fact which was shown in 'the thick of it' by having the 'worst' characters both being scottish, you need the accent to make the most out of the expletives in the script, to justify their use & get the best vocal sttack of just the word 'fuck' in all it's derivations you need a scots accent, we use the word for far more than any other language or dialect in everyday speech that the word loses it's meaning most of the time but can be wielded like a weapon when needed, just watch any scene with peter capaldi ' malcolm tucker'(who once played in an art school punk band with craig ferguson) & his scottish compatriot 'jamie mcdonald' played brilliantly by paul higgans. the tucker character made the whole series but didn't stop capaldi playing 'dr who' for several years. you can see the 'scottish hand' in veep which is missing from the american version of the office which doesn't appeal to the british ear like the original gervais version, despite him being involved in the american production.

I completely forgot he wrote and directed Death to Stalin. That film is as equally brilliant as it is dark, while also being incredibly educational. I highly recommend it for the performances alone, but the story is jarring to say the least.
If you want to see something else by Mr. Iannucci that's a wee bit lighter, I'd recommend the Personal History of David Copperfield. Equally entertaining, but less psyche scarring.

As Craig said, there’s a large Italian diaspora in Scotland, and for some reason they seem to own all our chippies (fish and chip shops)! There were two chippies in the town in which I grew up and both were owned/run by Italian families. Lovely fish and chips, too.
It’s the same with ice cream shops here - all Italian! Not that I’m complaining; they certainly know their ice cream.

My favourite computer chair (I'm pretty sure) won't fit under my computer decks, but I'm seriously considering putting 2/4s under the desk to raise it up so my car seat computer chair (homemade by me from scrap!) will fit under. The State Department might also try putting wood pieces under theirs, maybe attached maybe not.
I was very impressed that disgust with the new British PMs position a la 'tax the poor but only spend on the rich', which is like they read Robin Hood and got the lesson very, very wrong. In the US, when trump did the same thing (during a boomtime due to Obama it's worth noting), hordes of poor and uneducated people cheered, not understanding that the tax cuts were very much not for them, and that those cheered for tax cuts were actually a form of wealth redistribution, since the overwhelming majority of spending is done to help the established rich, charging them less when they derive the overwhelming majority of the financial windfalls/profits from the economy.

I think more and more of the most incisive, penetrating analysis of the current" body politic " in the USA is being achieved by comedy writers and performers like in part, the night-time shows of course ( Colbert & Kimmel and until his departure from "The Daily show", Trevor to name but the most successful. )
