Lage is the first guitarist who I've heard who is talking about macro time (a metronome marking for every two measures). You can also set the metronome really slow to mark every 4 measures or get a specialized metronome to mark every 8 measures. This type of time practice does wonders for teaching musicality that you will never learn from placing the metronome on "2" and "4" or every quarter note. This type of practice teaches you how to phrase.
I think one of the best musical tools is a dropping out metronome. It's great to set the metronome to half time but a dropping out metronome can work by percentage. If you have 70% chance of silence, then you may go a long stretch having to carry the beat. It's improved my rhythm in a matter of weeks. Hope I don't plateau here...

yep. watch mark turner speaks on his q&a he says he practices on 30 bpm on 8th>triplets>16 and so on, and only then raises the bpm.
