I always like to watch you repair things. After watching this video I got my Sony HI 8 camcorder out to try it. After a few seconds it stopped, I couldn't eject the tape. Left it for a couple of minutes, it ejected the tape . I cleaned the pinch roller, tried a tape again and it seems to be working now. I've got to copy these tapes on to DVD before I lose them. Keep up the excellent work you do with your repaires.

Nice. I have a Canon ES170 that I bought new back in the day, it's from 1997. It looks a lot like the ES600, except it's a really basic model: black and white viewfinder, mono sound, etc.(all I could afford at the time). It still works, with AC adaptor, all of the batteries are long since dead.

Another great video. Looks very similar internally to my Nikon which currently has, most likely bad caps, with viewfinder issues.

Got Canon ES900 8mm camcorder. Everything works except the video (in viewfinder and external monitor) gets static artifacts (horizontal noise lines). When I push with my finger down on the tape loading mechanism (after the tape being inserted), the video quality gets back to perfect normal quality. It feels like the tape doesn't go deep down enough and is not reaching the video heads. Do you think this is a video heads alignment problem, or something wrong with tape guiding mechanism? Love to watch your videos. Very informative. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Interesting video. I have a Canon UC900 8mm camcorder, similar to the one you are fixing in the video. Mine also needs fixing. When I move the rotary switch to select OFF, PLAY, EDIT and the various operating modes, the camcorder is stuck in one of the operating modes (namely "SPOTLIGHT") and never goes into "PLAY" mode, hence I can no longer play my old tapes. Any ideas? Rotary switch contacts? Thanks in advance.

    I have a Canon ES 400 V maybe around 1999, I tore completely down . I guess if I would of
watched this video first, I would looked at problems with the tape transport area . That's where my problem was, I think but, I knew nothing. Like a kid, taking his first lawn mower engine apart, ( if you ever
did that sort of thing as a kid), I did . But I'm sure it never went back together, just like this camcorder.
SO thanks for the information My tape transport doesn't match yours but I'm spotting all the same things
those pins the clutch the band brake. I finally found the little thing to nudge to release the transport like your going to put a tape in. I just got another one coming from eBay to look at 15 ship 15 cost I'm out
$30 but Now I'll have another maybe it will work , but I doubt it. as they always say I had no way to plug it in to power it so for parts

The fact that it's 25 years old and the video heads are not worn out is a supprise.
Not so bad a picture considering the angle guide is wrong.
I've seen vhs machines that were used so hard, the head drum and rabbit ref shelf was just dark grey with wear.
Almost like the tape was sandpaper.
That was in an old Panasonic Nv333 top loader, normally a good machine picture wise.

Most camcorders did not have a happy life. They sat in the bag, pulled out at Xmas, kids birthdays and vacation time. Most people didn't record more than a few dozen tapes in the cameras lifetime. I know this because people bring me their tapes to put on dvd. Usually under 20 tapes. 20x2 hours. 40 hours recording and many of these tapes were forgotten and never played. Most are very low hours. Professionally used gear ran up the hours but even my last pro camera i bought probably only has about 500 hours on it and i used it for at least 2 shoots a week but with the exception of weddings an average corporate video shoot may have put 30 minutes of actual recording on the heads. The editing machines on the other hand they ran up a few hours.

_"The fact that it's 25 years old and the video heads are not worn out is a supprise."_
It shouldn't be. Most people have never used their camcorders very often; usually only for special occasions like holidays and such. For the most part, they are hardly ever used because, beyond recording those moments and, perhaps, playing them back if you didn't have a VCR for that, there wasn't much use for them otherwise.
It's certainly not like today, where you can pretty much record onto video anything at any time if you have a modern smartphone, making it highly convenient compared to lugging around a camcorder everywhere you went.

Do you know much about those optex RBE77MF batteries? I just found a Canon ES750 at a garage sale for $20 and it came with 2 of these batteries! For some reason one of them causes the red tally lights to blink when put in camera / VCR mode but nothing displays on the camera screen. The camera functions 100% with the other battery.
I tested the battery in question with my multi meter and it takes and holds a charge but for some reason just gives these blinking lights on the cam almost as if the cam isn’t getting what it needs from the battery.
    Cheers

I believe someone stuck a colored pencil and made perfect rings on the pinch roller, as they were multi colored. the auto stop is broken and it will run with no tape in it. I think someone was in there and left a mark on the pinch roller as the substance rubbed off easily.

I have a G2000 canon camcorder and was hoping to transfer some old tapes to digital. Unfortunately it does not seem to want to pull the tape down around the heads. Without a tape, the mechanism is pulling down. Do you have any experience with a similar situation?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 роки тому

When you close the tape door with a tale inside so you hear the drum spin up? If it does, does it sound like normal speed or does it sound way too fast? The camera detects that the drum us running before attempting to load. If it doesn't spin or winds up real fast it will just open the cassette again. Check the edge connectors where the drum motor plugs into the main board.

Of course, a more pertinent question is "is it worth the effort to fix it?"
With regards to a vintage Canon camcorder ... probably not, considering how many leaky SMD caps are expected in that thing. As you've mentioned, it was a really serious problem with these kinds of camcorders of that vintage. And I believe Canon was among the very worst in that regard.

    • @12voltvids
