You need to be here in the summer, when it's light soon after 4 a.m. and doesn't get dark until eleven p.m. -sitting in a pub garden on a light summer evening is a world away from our dark winter days.
We actually had Coffee before Tea. In London Coffee houses have been around since the 1600s. When Tea was first brought over to the UK. Coffee houses used to sell it as a novelty drink.
Thank you for pointing it out, about the coffee culture and London in the 1600's, and the debates and newspapers that may have fanned the revolutionary flames in Europe
Graham Smith: coffee houses and pubs were where the Royal spies would go to find out the mood of the country. Probably still happening by government spies.
I find that people from big countries have louder voices than those from small ones.. There are so many places to visit in London when it rains...art galleries, museums, even book shops. The Americans I met in London were well mannered, appreciated our culture, and were a credit to their country.
Would you consider Jamaica or Nigeria "big countries" ? Yet, the big personalities and voices of those two countries represent all the others in-between in London, and in a good way to I may add. It's amazing that Americans almost believe coffee to be their invention or creation, and in that aspect most Europeans---i'd suggest for Americans to visit in their lifetimes a Ethiopian, Turkish, Marrakesh coffee houses amidst other lesser but major coffee growing cultures like Kenya's, where coffee drinking is not just a preoccupation, but a cultural and traditional ritual, and ALL are available in London...
Some businesses close on a Monday because they're busy on the weekend, so they have their weekend on a Monday. For example, if a music venue doesn't have any artists booked on a Monday they close, or if a restaurant is busy at the weekend and quiet on a Monday, they close, because it makes financial sense.
Really enjoyed watching your channel, Izzy. It good to see you and your friends are enjoying yourself, when I was at university I suffered from low self esteem and crippling social anxiety, so never really enjoyed any of it! If you haven't done so already you should read Bill Bryson's book 'Notes from a small Island'. Bill is a similar age to me, and who came to Britain from Iowa in the early 1970's, married an English girl and worked as a journalist in London in the 1980's. The book is an American's perspective on British culture, a good read.
Depends when you go, I just looked for a flight to Paris roundtrip on Skyscanner and got a round trip for £58, but like I said you have to be able to go on the dates they have the cheap returns 👍...Venice I got £48 return 3 weeks ago 👍
Really enjoyed watching your channel. As an 'older' Brit that lives 'oop North' I wish you so much happiness and success wherever you settle down, Izzy. Keep smiling sweetheart.
Please remember that only southerners think that “oo” (“oop“) rhymes with look and took and completely forget about how they pronounce the words poop, loop, etc that do not. We northerners are usually easy going and accept that folk to have their own accent. So please, Southerners, leave the pronunciations of the Northerners up to to us Northerners or we patient Northerners may have to parody the southern twang and start mocking how you buy your newspipers from the Piper Shop or buy a packet of nats and raisins, san lotion and marfwash, from the supermarket.
I think the lack of McDonalds drive thru's is just a London thing. I live in Nottingham and there are 4 McDonalds within 2-3 miles from my home, all drive thru's.
Yeah ik what u mean, I live in Coventry. London feels like a foreign place for us. Different world! We have 6 McDonald’s and only 2 in the city centre don’t have a drive through, the rest do
I like your philosophy on the weather. The UK does not experience wall to wall sunshine but the amount of rain it receives is exaggerated. Also, when the weather is nice it is much more appreciated.
Good luck with the interview. We have drive through McDonalds here. I live in a very rural city just south of the Scottish border and I pass it every time I go to work. Only there is a Greggs across the road, so I go there instead. Lol. While we are hard to make friends with. Once you've made that friend, generally that person is a friend for life. It does require the person moving here to make the effort to make friends though. We don't have air con as generally we don't need it. The amount of time we'd use them would be a massive false economy and cost a lot in maintenance from lack of use the rest of the year. We simply open the window. We don't have screens to keep out bugs (which is another common U.S. comment), as most of the time there are little to no bugs. Granted you may not want to keep your window open at night and unfortunately it's only after living here some time you learn when to keep your window open to avoid big changes in weather, small insects, etc...
I was in Boston a few years ago and came out of a show at 10 pm and couldnt find a place to have a coffe at all..In Providence RI the restaurant we were in was closing up at 10 pm and that is a real university town...
Congrats on the interview! I went to grad school in London and the interview was with my grad program coordinator.... make sure you know quite a bit about the school, the program, the classes, etc as well for the interview! Live it up there while you can. It was definitely the best few years of my life!
Travel has got slightly more expensive during covid but mainly you may be missing the tricks as not used to public transport. So here are the tips... Young person's railcard gives you 1/3 off trains in UK and 1-6 travelcards in London. Book long distance trains in advance and they are about 50-75% off. You can get to Paris much, much, much, cheaper by bus and it's not that long a ride. Coach from Victoria Station to lots of destinations. Consider other bits of Europe like Croatia etc.
Hi Izzy, just been listening and enjoying your vlog on London, very interesting, I'm from the north of England where life is quite a bit less hectic than London and a lot cheaper too. Don't know if you have visited any other historical Towns and Cities in England, but pretty sure you would enjoy visiting them with their slower pace of life ☺️. Britts love Americans and from my experience vice versa. It's nice that you like the rain, I like the rain too as long as I am not outside in the rain getting wet through lol 😁, strangely, when I am sat warm and snug indoors I like to hear the sound of the rain on the windows and find the sound quite therapeutic and calming. Thank you for posting and sharing your experience in the UK. Hope you get to fulfill your ambitions to travel and experience and enjoy many great places in Europe and around the world ☺️. Cheers thanks again for your vlog here on London 👍 🇬🇧🇺🇸
I absolutely adore hearing about your time in London 😍 I keep forgetting you're on a study abroad and not actually staying in London forever. What an amazing opportunity though and fingers crossed for fall 🤞
I think she just wasn't aware of Pret A Manger, as a business (I could be wrong, of course). It's growing in the US but even still I mainly find it cities!
You can’t be flying with Ryan air then because no way should a flight should cost that to Paris. You have to book in advance. Sometimes you can go to a European city for £37 ish.
Nearly all young people in Europe go backpacking with Interrail. Its cheap - just one ticket, and you're away - anywhere, every day. Americans have Eurail (which has to be bought in dollars before you come over). As you're under 26, you would get a super cheap discount as a European. As an American, you could enquire via an Amtrak agency (where you'll need to get your ticket from, anyway).
There are drive-through McD in the UK. I have two relatively close to me. I’m not so keen as when I get it home, 90% of the time I find they’ve forgotten something from the order. Last time it was straws for the drinks, and a Fillet of Fish was missing.
You wont get anything like real tea in those places you mentioned. When i take someone for afternoon tea, the tea is real loose tea brewed in a teapot with a cosy. And the tea leaves must be of highest quality, and i usually ask for a tea-strainer. Those places you mentioned - you could almost fall over with laughter !
Cool! Oxford's Bridge of Sighs in the intro at 0:16, behind that is the area where the rats scene from The Mummy (2017) was filmed. Also, off to your left is the Radcliffe Camera where the next scene with the cars going around it at night was filmed.
We have drive-thru here and the McDonald’s ones are just as you describe just probably not in city centres. There’s drive-thru Starbucks, Burger King, KFC etc. When I was in America I was surprised to see drive up windows for pharmacies and liquor stores!
Your sooo entertaining and uplifting. Your parents must be so proud. I hope you come back to uk, be shame if journey over next month! Also wise to have some chill time in London, or u burn urself out! Greenwich observatory and Tower of London lush. Paris is stunning maybe most impressive city in the world. I personally don't like coffee, unless I make it myself, I'm the same with tea, I usually have chocolate. Too many types and strength of tea, coffee Etc. I'm particular what I drink. I watched a video on and American Macdonald's, British burgers, far less chemicals, that are banned in Europe There are only three ingredients involved in their fries, and generally healthier all around. Personally I prefer Fish and chips.😊
You do get a lot of McDonalds drive throughs in the UK, it's just not really a thing in London. My local town in the midlands has 3 McDonalds, 2 of which have drive throughs :)
True. Another example is New York City, which gets twice the rainfall that London gets. However, when it rains in NYC, it really rains and soon it stops. But in London it often drizzles for hours at a time, which means hours of miserable weather but not that much in terms of rain volume. But it's enough to spoil my day! And I'm talking from experience, LOL.
lots of Rain in the UK is another Stereotype. The problem the the UK’s weather is it’s unpredictable, a couple nice days, then a couple cloudy days, then a couple rainy days, then a couple windy/cold days etc. I’ve been Florida before and it rained more than the summer season in England
In more Central London yeah you won’t find drive thru’s, but you will find some in the London suburbs (where I live) and many in the rest of the country.
Back in the day (noughties and teenies) businesses closed at 8 and supermarkets were 24 hr, pubs were till 2am, nightclubs till morning or even afternoon. However due to the onslaught of online shopping they now close earlier, supermarkets are no longer all night, the lessened footfall with nightlife (Millennials dont drink as much, and use hook up apps to to mingle) also means pubs have reverted to 11pm last orders. Following the pandemic its worsened further - my local work cafes now close so early they miss the hometime commute crowd, and shops shutting one day of the week hasn't been seen since the 70s. Back in the 90s and noughties, London ran the worlds largest nightlife districts, half a million passing through Soho alone each night and doubling on the weekends.
I'm from London, and I assure you, we English like meeting Americans, I was standing at the bar of a pub in London once, and this guy was sitting there, and he asked for a beer in an American accent,, so I asked him where in USA are you from, and for 2 hours we were just talking and exchanging thoughts, and at the end, he had to go, but he put a 20£ note on the bar and said to the barman "keep him fuelled".....I loved Americans before, but I love them even more after that
Travelling round Europe WAS cheap - until little old you came over. Seriously though, you know all about the world situation in the last few years - it changed everything, big time.!
Hi Izzy, New viewer here. Travel is super dear at the moment post covid. In 'normal' times you could fly on budget airlines like easyjet or ryan air to various parts of Europe from as little as $30 return! We're on gmt at the moment but clocks go forward next week and the days will be lighter until later....nearly 10pm in summer. Not sure why you thought you'd get hate for being American? Driving a car into central London is for the rich and famous as between the congestion charge and parking charges it could set you back $150 a day to drive and park in central London!!
Total admiration for you, it takes a lot of courage to pack bags, step on a plane and go alone to study in another country. I don't think i could do it. Best of wishes for your masters, keep up the inspiration. Hope we see a vid of you back here enjoying the next chapter of your life. Kind regards
Actually in some major cities in America we have some McDonald’s that also have those screens such as New York and dc, but anyways your videos make me extremely excited about studying aboard!
Love your enthusiasm. If you miss drive in Mackie D theres one in Wandsworth, many outside of London and suburbs too. If you think Mackie D good in London wait till you get to Paris!! 👍 Enjoy the rest of your London stay. AirCon is very bad for the environment, Europe in general much more environment focused than US - cars, water usage, energy, etc.
There are plenty of drive-through McDonalds in London and elsewhere in the UK. Indeed I live on the coast and there are 3 within a few minutes drive. However they are not allowed to build drive throughs in Central London due to traffic congestion so you have to park up or walk (mostly walk). Other Drive-Though operations in the UK are KFC, Pizza Hut and some smaller fast food outlets including Nando's (South African group selling Portuguese/Mozambican Chicken very spicy). The fact is that Drive-throughs are just not that popular in the UK as everyone does delivery even McDonalds and KFC. Air conditioning is available in all good hotels but is not in cheaper ones. Air B&B's are people homes and to be honest air conditioning is not something needed in the UK we need heat not cold that we get from the elements. Sorry Izzy but if you come back you will have to learn to stop using London as a standard for the UK. London is a very different place to the rest of the country. Its not like the USA where all the big cities have something in common with each other. Her in the UK London is unique there is no city in the UK like London. There a many lovely cities mostly the smaller ones like York and Wells which have so much history it will spin an average Americans head and that history is protected so NO air conditioning because it dries out old wattle and daube plaster and ends up undermining the very structure of the building. Imagine putting air conditioning into Anne Hathaway's cottage! it would be a wreck within 20 years after surviving in very good condition for over 500 years. For this reason in listed (protected) building air conditioning is illegal.
Maybe you’re not travelling every weekend because you know, you’re studying? Which is presumably why you’re here?? Maybe once in a while you could fit the travel between classes not vice versa?

Even in India or Africa you can't get from city to city for $20, but overall US is the most expensive country on the god's earth. Good informative episode though
Americans can be loud Until the Brits get drunk and they’re even louder. There’s so many we’ve encountered in other European countries to the point where I’ve seen them being kicked out from restaurants, a film festival and even the train.
hi Lizzy nice that your enjoying London. unfortunately Americans think London is Britain. there are some great cities in the North Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds Newcastle. to great great travel deals try compare sights (sky scanner) out side of London McDonalds driver ins are numerous, in Manchester they've a hotel, so maybe travel round Britain (and Ireland🇮🇪)
I know its not really your point, but London in the 1700s and 1800s had the largest number of Coffee Houses in Europe, outside of Turkey! They were seen as quite subversive (places for a lot of political gossip rather than pleasantries over afternoon tea) and were closed down eventually. Re your point about cheap travel, I would say that Covid has upset the previous norms, the budget airlines in the UK were the most competitive in Europe, if the world, and cheap tickets of less than £50 to reach different cities or regions of Europe was very common (I flew to Morrocco for £60 a few years ago at the last minute for example). However that budget airline cheap ticket model only works with mass travel and filling the plane with other ticket tiers so covid has really disrupted that budget airline model. Same with Eurostar as that was really reliant on business travel to subsidise its cheaper advanced fares. As things get back to normal the prices should become competitive again. For Eurostar if you book when the tickets first get released (I think its about 2 months before) you should be able to snap up the cheapest ones (you could get advanced £70 return tickets before), but like the airlines the capacity is all messed up due to Covid and it will take time to get back to normal but I would look at the advanced fares for Eurostar, same for Eurostar to Brussels. You can also get through tickets to other cities in Europe, intercity train travel in Europe is typically cheaper than that in the UK.
I live in Yorkshire and out of the many McDonald`s I know only one of them is not a drive - through, and that is on the grounds that it is in the middle of a pedestrianized area. Clearly London is last year in comparison to Yorkshire.
London is a congested city so centrally there aren't any or only a few drive through McD's there is one down the road from Tower Bridge on the way to Limehouse or by Wandsworth Bridge but to be honest you should eat better food as in the UK we don't have GM foods and have higher standards on food as certain US foods are banned in the UK.
I am London born and bred but come and see Scotland,we do have drive thru. You do seem to like clothes, good I did at your age but had the Kings Road to hang about.
Young people dont run around in cabs. They're for unfit, lazy people. Many people cycle, even business people, to work, etc. Scooters are also popular, especially in Europe where cars are banned from many streets reserved only for buses, scooters, and cyles.
London is not the whole of England, England is not the whole of Great Britain, Great Britain is not the whole of the United Kingdom and the UK is not the whole of the British Isles.

I'm from London, and I assure you, we English like meeting Americans, I was standing at the bar of a pub in London once, and this guy was sitting there, and he asked for a beer in an American accent,, so I asked him where in USA are you from, and for 2 hours we were just talking and exchanging thoughts, and at the end, he had to go, but he put a 20£ note on the bar and said to the barman "keep him fuelled".....I loved Americans before, but I love them even more after that
2:05 Just a note, octaves are pitch (deep / squeaky) whereas you're thinking of decibels (loud / quiet).
Travelling round Europe WAS cheap - until little old you came over.
Seriously though, you know all about the world situation in the last few years - it changed everything, big time.!
For cheap travel to Europe you need to get a ferry. My friend took an all inclusive trip to France via ferry for £150...
London is my home town and is amazing, I miss it, glad you love it too! (I’m off to Georgia for the first time later this year!)
It’s not sunny because its winter
Hi Izzy,
New viewer here.
Most Starbucks in Boston area close at 7 pm. May why it is called New England.
Hi Izzy this video is America vs uk but then you said in America vs London and 200 dollars to Paris I think your looking in the wrong place sweetie
Retail stores are various from 24/ 7 or closing at 5pm on a sunday and again you need to escape bubble of central london.
Actually in some major cities in America we have some McDonald’s that also have those screens such as New York and dc, but anyways your videos make me extremely excited about studying aboard!
Not just major cities, a good amount of locations in the US also have them!
Good luck with the interview!
She looks like the Blonde chick in The Vampire Diaries (I think she was in the Originals as well) Caroline !
UK has no drive through McDonalds... OK, I've heard it all now.
The one in Wandsworth was actually the first one in the UK. I think it opened in about 1991.
If you book 2 months in advance you can book a Eurostar train return to Paris from London for around £80 / $110
If you book a few weeks ahead and time flexible you can get cheaper Euristar train tickets to Paris as a student I believe
Hello I'm from a smallish Town in England and we have 2 Mcdonald drive throughs. and a regular McDonald's in Town centre.
video needed , thanks xoxo
So you're leaving the UK just as the weather gets good, and returning when it starts getting bad again? 😲
Sadly, yes!

No drive thru in City centre. But definitely in towns.
I live in England and to visit my family in the South in cost nearly 500 so its actually cheaper to go abroad then stay hear which is crazy
There are drive thru's biut are usually found in the suburbs.
Even in India or Africa you can't get from city to city for $20, but overall US is the most expensive country on the god's earth. Good informative episode though
Take the train t
o paris from london its about 60 quid during the off peak months
There are plenty of maacy d drive throughs around England
Just checked flight. 24-5 to 30-5 £44.74 return London- Paris. That seems fairly cheap 😀😃🙂
I paid £100 one way back in 1987!
i live in birmingham uk we have drive through maccie d
There are thousands of drive thru McDonald’s in the UK FYI
Closing times -
You didnt mention that our retail premises are open SEVEN days a week.
There's hundreds of Drive-Through McDonalds in the UK.
Friends -
London is not rural Georgia.
The further you go from London, the more friendly everyone becomes, almost on a mile-by- mile basis!!
Interesting that you can push back your graduation so you can study in London. What are you taking up for your Master's?
If you go watch this vlog, it covers my MA program :) ua-cam.com/video/5AWcBKr3XGk/v-deo.html
June 2022, Eurostar London Paris return £164
Americans can be loud Until the Brits get drunk and they’re even louder. There’s so many we’ve encountered in other European countries to the point where I’ve seen them being kicked out from restaurants, a film festival and even the train.
Hi just to let you know there are drive through Macdonalds in England loads of them
hi Lizzy nice that your enjoying London. unfortunately Americans think London is Britain. there are some great cities in the North Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds Newcastle. to great great travel deals try compare sights (sky scanner) out side of London McDonalds driver ins are numerous, in Manchester they've a hotel, so maybe travel round Britain (and Ireland🇮🇪)
Thank you SO MUCH for this!!!!
Get out of London and see the lovely countryside.
London is completely different to the rest of the UK
Yes
Have you tried Greggs? Becoming an institution in the UK. Best wishes
You can fly to Paris from London for about £60 round trip can't you?
It's the train that €60 each way...
We don’t need air conditioning machines here - we LIVE in air conditioning ! 65 degrees Fahrenheit and 49% humidity is HOT and HUMID to us !
There's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing.
🤔
Bad weather is Tornados, Hurricanes, and when people can be killed by heat. The weather in the UK is not known for killing people.
London is not the UK, Just one hellish part of it. :} There again I'm a country guy, and cities are my definition of Hell.
London is not the whole of England, England is not the whole of Great Britain, Great Britain is not the whole of the United Kingdom and the UK is not the whole of the British Isles.
Americans reputation for being loud doesn’t come from their voices. It goes back to the 60/70s with the clothes that they wore.
