Volkswagen, also known as VW, is a German car manufacturer that was founded in 1937 by the German Labour Front, a Nazi organization. Its name is derived from the German-language terms Volk and Wagen, translating to "people's car" when combined.
The company's original purpose was to produce a car that was affordable for the average German worker, which resulted in the creation of the Volkswagen Beetle.
The Beetle was an immediate success, and by the 1960s, it had become a cultural icon. VW expanded its model line, introducing cars such as the Type 2, the Karmann Ghia, and the Porsche 911. The Beetle remained in production for several decades, becoming one of the best-selling cars of all time. In the 1970s and 1980s, VW also became known for its Golf, Passat, and Polo models, which were popular in Europe and around the world.
The group's biggest market is in China, which delivers 40 percent of its sales and profits.
Today, the factory in Wolfsburg, Germany is the largest car factory under one roof, on the planet. The brand produces over 10 million cars per year at over 100 factories across the world.
As its globalization advances, Volkswagen is emerging as one of the world’s most successful volume car manufacturers, and today offers cutting-edge solutions for future issues such as e-mobility and digitalization.
