    Minot is called the magic city because of how quick it was built and how quick it grew in population

      Magic cities have leftover masonry from the previous civilization(mud flood). I would be interested in seeing the downtown area's older buildings. You are good at this, I'll be looking for further vids .

    Thanks for the tour of Minot. I left in '13 after being stationed there for roughly fourteen years. It's really nice to see it again. Compared to what it was in '99, Minot has grown by leaps and bounds.

    I have lived here my entire life, so it was interesting to see the view of someone new to the area, however. It actually takes between an hour and an hour and a half to get to the Canadian border, not 20-30 miles! And only half the high school is down town, it is split between two campuses. The one down town, Central Campus, is 9th & 10th grade. And taking a right by the Scandinavian Heritage Center will bring you to Magic City Campus, 11th & 12th grade. And it was nice you mentioned the Norsk Høstfest, even though that is not where it is held. It is at the State fairgrounds every year, end of September/beginning of October, and is the largest Scandinavian festival in all of North America, bringing in tens of thousands of people from all over the world. Norsk Høstfest celebrates Scandinavian culture and heritage of the five Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. And you are definitely going to want to know more than broadway, especially if you ask anyone for directions! And the prices of car dealerships are jacked up because of oil, everything's price was jacked up. Which is also why we have so many hotels everywhere. Her-Ber-Gers is how it's pronounced haha! I hope nothing that I said will be taken in offense, I just wanted to clarify some things since you were new to Minot when you made the video, but it was great to see Minot in such a positive way! Most people new to Minot have negative outlooks, just as you mentioned!

    I am a retired ANG member and did a 6 month tour at Grand Forks AFB in the late 1990s. MY active duty counterpart was a great NCO who became an officer. I liked being there despite the cold weather. You are a great "salesman for the USAF." Please don't ever lose your positive attitude! All the best at the USAFA prep School and I hope you get into USAFA and make it through the program and become an officer.

    Hey WildBlueYonder, thanks for the awesome video of the Magic City. It has certainly changed a lot since I was stationed at Minot . I was there from September 1985 to April 1987. I was a munitions troop working in the Weapons Storage Area. Minot was my second duty station and my first was Kadena AB, Okinawa Japan. Talk about going from paradise the tropics to no mans land the Arctic. If you are still in the Air Force put Kadena AB
    on your dream sheet you will love it.

    Great video. I was at Minot 05-07 (did Grand Forks from 82-84). The majority of the restaurants you pointed out were not there when I was there...so big improvement.
    Your advise on getting out and doing stuff is spot on. I can't count the number of Airmen who did nothing but complain about nothing to do. If you don't look for things to do (regardless of where you're at (I was in Hawaii from 07-11 and people complained there)) then you won't find things to do.
    As for your comment on the state fair. You missed a good time. There's almost always something happening at the fair grounds (belt sander races come to mind) when the state fair isn't in town. The key to being at a place like Minot is to get out of your comfort zone and do things that you might not otherwise do.

    1990-1994 at Minot AFB, was a hard for a kid from Philly to adjust, and was happy to leave in '94. That said, now in my upper 40s, I believe it would be a great place to get away from the madness of the north east. Nice video thanks for sharing.....

    Great video I loved being a Minot Airman. It took me 5 years of putting in every quarter to get out of Nellis AFB, NV and when my orders dropped for Minot I was over the moon with joy.

    • @JackMeoff46
      @JackMeoff46 3 роки тому

      Why would you choose Minot over Nellis? Never been to Nellis, but I’m stationed in Minot and I don’t like it at all

    • @justinmil1
      @justinmil1 3 роки тому

      @@JackMeoff46 there are so many more things to do in Minot. And Minot doesn't stay hot and dry all the time. The summer days are so much longer than Nellis. At Nellis it's dark after 8pm in the summer. Where I'm from the sun has just set by 10pm. At Minot the sun has set by almost 11pm. Then there's the hunting and fishing. The beautiful scenery of the open prairie. Living the Country life is the best way to live.

    Minot looks to have grown a little. Nice town, and good folk in that part of the country. Don't miss the cold though, especially the wind chills of 40 to 50 below (or worse).

    I use to bridge jump off of all the bridges into the wabash River when I was a kid. I remember one bridge that was painted blue underneath and that was one of the scariest jumps. It felt like a 10 second hang time going down. Good times. The summer of 96 was my favorite summer of my life. Such a blast, first taste of real freedom.

    I lived in North Dakota at the time of you filming this video, I don't think I've ever been to Minot. I am just 15 years old planning on joining the Air Force. Minot seems like a cool little town to be stationed at, I'd prefer Ogden Utah or Las Vegas (which is where I currently live)

    It's called the magic city because before the first oil bloom, it was a tiny town with nothing there, then the oil bloom hit, and it seemed like over the course of one week it bloomed with all these new buildings and businesses. It was nothing then in a tiny amount of time it Grew into a huge town, it was so small then BOOM... A city, JUST LIKE MAGIC :) I live in Minot and I love it

I'm heading to BMT on December 15, and then going to Keesler AFB to tech school for Client Systems. Definitely looking forward to it. How tolerant are people in Minot, or ND in general, when it comes to people from different ethnicities? I am interested in buying a vacation home in a small and cold city (call me weird) in the US. or Europe. I look somewhat like Antonio Banderas so I'm worried about whether xenophobism is a problem in small American cities. I hope this question doesn't offend anyone from Minot, it looks like my kind of city, I'm just looking for some opinions.

He doesn't have to wrk IN THE TOWN!🏠 Oddly, there have been BLACK PPL in Minot since THE MINOT AIRFORCE BASE was est. 40yrs ago.😕 Just not that many. Anderson In Minot nobody cares about ethnicity from my experience. Honestly, the ND state is more a prairie farming looking community. Similar to South Dakota and two Canadian provinces (Saskatchewan and Manitoba) above. North Dakota reminds me more of Native American type of feel, than anything. It gets really cold at night though when I visited.

    One of the major differences with US Cities and European ones , is that one can walk and do your shopping there without getting in a car and driving between shops , I am from Edinburgh Scotland and it is such a vast difference living there compared to the USA lots of historical places to visit and stacks of Culture and the Architecture is fantastic .

      WildBlueYonder hey there I'm moving here and going to college. How fun would you say it is in minot or towns near by is there a party scene?

    • @thegigadykid1
      @thegigadykid1 9 років тому

      WildBlueYonder also not to sound racist I'm black as well but how black would you say it is

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 років тому

      All of the black people here are in the military pretty much. So maybe 15% of the base population is black folks

    • @WildBlueYonder
      @WildBlueYonder  9 років тому

      thegigadykid1 There's usually parties to go to. Just your typical college parties. And then there's a few bars. There's Shots, Ebeneezers. B Dubs in town and a place called JR Rockers that's on base.

    It's called "The Magic City" because when the railroad first got here the city exploded :) almost like magic. I've lived here my whole life and that's what I've come to understand

    The trick to Minot is socialization. Try to enjoy Minot solo and you'll probably be bored. There are some places where it's probably a lot more fun to live off base, but this isn't one of them. Socialize and make friends with people near you.

    Best part of living in Minot is leaving the base at the end of the day and getting away from all the bull and bad vibes that has been created cause everyone is salty about being stationed there. Besides that tho its not bad
