- We are back at it with our new DIY van life build series. We are stripping Custard back and trying to build the ultimate off grid bus to travel the world in! This week we attempted to box in a seat, put the new wheels back on and started rebuilding the bed... sort of! We're hoping to get these renovations done so that when lockdown ends we can hit the road for full time van life adventures!!

Been itching like thrush for the latest update. How about a water heater that uses a closed heat exchanger, pulling free heat from the engine in a closed glycol loop. When the engine runs you get free hot water (so always available when you get to your destination) but they can run independently with a diesel powered furnace for early morning soap action.
I think what you are looking for Aimee is 'edge trim' for you bottle holder. You can go on Amazon and type 'edge trim' and that should bring up some products that you can put around the edge of the hole and protect your cups/bottles.
If there isn't any edge trim that will fit the thickness of the shelf then you could also think about using something like a lot of boats and campers have...a cup/drink holder that will slide into the hole already cut.
We had to put up new curtains in our spare room, you would think it would of taken at most a hour, took like 4 and we ended up ruining a few screws too. Every thing always ends up taking way longer than u think. the box is pure craftmanship craig.
For your cup holder solution- try visiting your local fire station to see if they’ve a 70mm hose washer that you could have. This is a little rubber ring that fits inside the female coupling end of a 70mm firefighting hose.
A Borrower reference!
Look for a car cup holder that will fit your side table. My car has (Er, had - seems to be missing) one that detaches that has two sizes for cups. Perhaps at a place that sells bits and pieces for cars. a.k.a. Recessed cup holder

For your side table - search Amazon for ‘cup holder’ or ‘recessed cup holder’. Also, maybe put a small magazine rack in back of Amy’s chair box.
If all else fail,you can cut a thick rubber band and glue it around the inside of the holes edge

For the cup holder you can search for "u shaped rubber gasket". You can cut it the size you want and clamp it around your mdf.
Amy, B&Q sell a 'draught excluder' which is a flexible foamy strip backed with adhesive that I have used for similar things in my van. Hope that helps. Another wild video guys!

A tip for you guys!!!!!! Make sure you retorque your wheel nuts as they have a tendency of coming loose and wrecking the lovely new wheels! 😳🤙

I follow mr. and mrs. adventure and I'm serious about being a minimalist, including people and so when I discovered UA-cam I just followed my certain few groups and that's it, when I noticed somebody else I don't Branch out expand try to get too much on my plate, Darting around like that first time you threw a super ball too hard and you broke 30 things, doing little bits of everything poorly instead of doing what you can very well. So, you're the first video I've seen out of hundreds of referrals, and I liked it, I had fun😊 I'm a good handyman and a go-to guy for a lot of people because they know I have constructed my life purposely with spare time just so I'll have those moments to say yes I'll help you. Right now on the split screen I'm looking at uxcell 5 piece 100 mm diameter wire protector on Amazon check it out, you would have to cut the center out but it's the type of rim you're looking for, good luck

Re cup holder, window rubber for double glazing cut to size and glue it in. Your wood is a similar thickness to a double glazed window. Hope if helps. Great videos xx

Just a thought for the storage/footrest box guys - how about gluing some of the plastic edging along the corners to stop the paper peeling back....no offence meant in respect of your pasting Aimee. 😊 Hope you manage to get the bed supports lowered so you can open the emergency 🚨 exit! You should be getting some free Hobnobs for your advert.
You two are still smashing out some funny stuff. We have a saying here that when the job seems so big it's like eating an elephant... little bites at a time. It's just a saying and not reality for goodness sakes. Like who would eat an elephant at all. They're so cute but they are big. Kind of think this is how both of you are doing the job of fixing up Custard. Keep dong little bites and you'll get it all done. It just makes for some more funnies for me to enjoy.
Sugru is an amazing product it's like plasticine glue, comes in all funky colours and can be moulded to suit your cup holder. Looks like hard work doing up the van in this weather, but hard work pays off, keep on kinging it 😊

LOL!! Love it! I am utterly worthless with stuff like this as well. In the end you work it out fine, but the 5000 screws, 57 brackets, and a couple of puzzles is totally my life! Crying Mate!!!

Re table guys I screw in a leg to the floor and pop a table on top of the leg. The best on the market which are slimline and can be recessed flat into the floor are sequoia - check them out online chippy’s workshop make them and you can buy a tripod so you can also take the table outside 🙋🏼♀️ genius multi table then xx

Aimee, here in the US we have drop in cup holders, if you can get one of those I think that would work.... The box came out awesome Craig good job!! If you want something to cover your cupholder, maybe you look for flexible edge protection in the usual online shops... thats what I'd look for...

The rubber seal for your cup is called a Grommet, you can get them in various diameters from engineering or industrial suppliers, you may have resize the hole to suit, great build by the way.

Search eBay/Amazon for car door trim and go from there love. Should find just what you need for your cup holder
Well I believe it's been mentioned but Amazon has a Dorman 41001 Cup Holder insert that might work. Possibly need to have a brace underneath to hold it in place.

Not sure what thickness your shelf is but if its between 15mm and 17mm then on Amazon search for Super 16 Jumbo black rubber car edge protection trim. It may be suitable.

love it! you two make me laugh so much. yesterday I spend 4 hours w my bros putting new headlights and brake lights on my SUV, new air filter but before that on Thursday, spent 4 hours w my dad going to junk yards finding the parts. Of course my bros arent just going do it. they make me their helper aka here you do it you learn and they supervisors...i forgot that part because I showed up all cute w makeup on and they laugh but jokes on them didnt ruin my makeup! .at the end of the day its the the time we spend with those that love us and believe in our crazy adventure! mine road trip all the highway pacific highway 1. thats the highway from bottom of ca to Washington state!!! am in the state of Arizona!

look up corner guards, it comes in a roll and you can cut a strip and fit it into the edge of the hole.
12:25 how about some sort of self adhesive seal strip for the cup holder? I googled everything I could think off and this is all I've found that's also waterproof. I can picture exactly the sort of thing you're on about which is even more frustrating haha

for the edge of the cup holder...why not but an actual cup with a cover and cut the edge off and use that...should be the exact right size
For some inspiration; lookup “snow and curt” on youtube for economical heating... They have an hydronic heating system with an extra heater which uses the heat of the engine and when extra heat is needed, they used the extra heater.. This system is what im going to consider. Tell me what you think about their system and what you like or don’t like about it... im still canvassing too. My consideration is that I don’t want to use gas in my build, if i can avoid this. So for my shower, kitchen and air-heater i would like to use the fuel that the van is using. And why would i not use the heat from the main engine, if that heat is basically for free? (Only when you drive). The system cost more to build, but i recon, this saves money in the end. Anyway im still canvassing electrical systems and so on.... So keep up the good videos!! Hi guys we are loving your experiences. We are both old enough to be your grandparents and have camped and are still caravanning here and around Europe. Wondering about you changing the cooking facilities from gas to electric! Surprised that you are using "Camping Gas" have you heard about re-fillable bottles using LPG (a lot, lot cheaper). If you watch some other van lifers vlogs you will see the set up they have installed using "Gas It", "Gaslo" and other similar gas suppliers. Think about when there has been a lack of sun to charge the batteries!!!!!! no cooking facilities on the electric hob. We use gas and also carry an electric plate for when we are hooked up to 240v, on sites. You guys do off grid camping so it is something to think about. Regards.

Thanks so much for the gas tips - we have actually decided not to go all electric for all your reasons and because we can't really afford to! So the gas is staying.. hoping to have it properly fitted next week so I will mention to the guy about Gas It and Gaslo... I might be asking a silly question but are they just gas bottles you keep in the van?
@@kingingit Hi guys, yes they are "normal" gas bottles however with the proper fittings they are refillable at LPG pumps, and one hell of a lot cheaper than Calor or Camping Gas. One thing to note though is that the initial purchase of the bottles is expensive however van "lifers" like yourselves quickly recoup the initial cost with the savings in refill costs. ps another supplier is "Safefill" Good luck.
