Tim Burton borrowed the high frequency idea from Earth Versus The Flying Saucers. That's the way the saucers are destroyed in that old 50s movie. He borrows the Martians' appearance from This Island Earth. This movie borrowed a lot from the old 50s Sci-Fi movies. Both of these old movies are on U Tube.
Everyone talk about the music killing martians and how that's funny (totally agree btw) ... but honnestly, the beginning with all the murders of those old people gave me creep when i was a child ! Just imagine, you're one of them, you see martians in your room, they kill everyone in a minute, nobody can protect you, you can't go away fast enough to escape them and you know that there are others outside ! They can't stand Slim Whitman's yodeling because the notes are too high. This was borrowed from Earth Versus The Flying Saucers where a certain high pitched frequency causes their ships to crash.
