Another simplistic option if you have a LOT of subs is to turn off the crossover in your processor and run everything full range. For years I tried running two mismatched subwoofers in my room with just using the two pre-outs on my AVR, and every time it was a negative result, so I always want back to just 1 sub... but now that I have the mini DSP 2x4 HD and a calibrated microphone, I was able to use the second sub to fix a null and flatten out the response in less than an hour! And this was using two mismatch subs, so I can't wait to have matching subs in the room, and take it to the next level!

I have a Dayton audio 1000 watt rack mount 1 channel subwoofer amplifier and one subwoofer, but wanting to add another subwoofer in the other corner of the room. The amplifier will power two subwoofers just fine, but would it be better to run the 2nd subwoofer on it's on own amplifier, or is that not really necessary with subwoofers? My pioneer A/V does have 2 subwoofer outs.
There’s a phrase in cycling and triathlon when asked how many bikes do you need. The answer is always +1 meaning one more than what you have!!! Looking at some HTs I think that phrase applies to subs as well lol.
Hi Youthman - Thanks for ANOTHER great video 👌🏻 I got a Marantz SR5011 with Subwoofer 1 and 2 out on the back. Do you only use a miniDSP if you use three or more subs? If I add a second sub to my system - is it overkill to connect a miniDSP to each of the sub out’s?
I have one MiniDSP connected to 2 subs and plan to connecting an additional (3rd) sub in the future. You only need one MiniDSP 2x4 HD for up to 4 subs.
@@Youthman as always! It’s a topic I haven’t heard addressed by anyone in the HT field, and I was interested in hearing the solutions you mentioned. Keep up the good work 👍🏾🙏🏾
Hey Youthman, I'm being silly these days. I have at my disposal a 4x10 bass cab and a 2000watt and 4000 watt amplifier. Can I run my home theatre receiver subwoofer preout into one of the power amps and into the 4x10? Would that work? Would it slap? The only thing I can think of is I would need a crossover possibly. My PC is running the audio via HMDI and I have a cross-over in my windows settings so that might suffice. I currently have an old Onkyo TX-SR605, and a 10" Energy EW-100 subwoofer. 200W I think give or take. Am I crazy? I want more bass out of my system these days.
But what if You use XLR connections for your subs? I have 2 M&K Thx subs connected to the Xlr sub-outs on my Marantz processor. Seams that if I want to use the MiniDsp I´d be forced to downgrade to rca outputs instead of the Xlr?
That’s exactly what I did in my setup. The reality is XLR isn’t going to innately make your system sound better. Yes you get about 3dB gain. If you have long runs to your subs, it can be good if RCA produces noise. Other than that, there really isn’t any “downgrade” by going to RCA. The pluses the miniDSP 2x4HD far outweigh any negatives RCA might have
@@Youthman Well I guess we´re both right on our different approaches and views. For me I´d much rather have the benefits of balanced connection on both ends. Not just for the added gain, that can be done with the volume control. But for the complete lack of humming and buzzing regardles of the volume. You on the other hand want the benefits of complete control of the low end via an extra layer of calibration software/hardware. If we both hear the end result that we want, then I guess we both win ;-)
Great Great video. Too funny I was JUST thinking of adding two more subs but really don't think I need them. I have two Martin Logan 1100X cross-corner setup. First ran Audyssey from the Marantz SR6015 then ARC from the sub app, a nudge forward, back, to the left, to the right and WHAM....these babies sound amazing. You know the drill....took a little time but I finally got tight, even bass at all seats and movies are out of bounds. But you know how us HT heads get...soon as we're over the excitement from a new piece of gear, we're onto the next. I honestly don't think my HT needs more subs but heck why not. Might need some help coming up with a good story to convince the wife. No matter what I said, having two subs in one room made absolutely NO SENSE to her. Wives!
I have 4 subs in my system, but not wired to the extent of what the video is about. I wanted "WEIGHT" and balance in my system. Just having a front left and right sub had me feeling my system was "front heavy" with bass. One of the most important places I NEEDED a sub was on the center channel. My system is 50/50 music/movies. Center channel dialogue in movies needed beef in voices. Concert videos needed bottom end in center to compete with left and right. The Eagles' When Hell Freezes Over has the kick drum and bass mixed to the center channel. It just made sense to me to put a sub on the center channel. I have a "Y" adapter on center with one side going to sub and the other going to amp for speaker. I also have the rear surrounds with a "Y" adapter. There's noticeable bass from the rears on movies like Mad Max: Fury Road and Blade Runner 2049 AND there's this incredible bass note at the end of The Invisible Man (2020). Having EACH channel locked down with a sub added much more to my setup. I'm VERY happy with the balance and "WEIGHT" of bass in my system.
I have 8 passiv subwoofers as Dual Bass Array. I connect them to a Yamaha digital stereo PA amplifier. 4 subs to one channel. Use a PA stereo DSP for corrections and separate delay for the rear array. AV-Receiver see only one sub.
@@Youthman - a friend helps with measuring tools. The response of this double array is a straight line between 16 and 80 Hz. It doesn’t sound spectacular but very natural like thunder or deep bass in a a car accident.
Honestly how you described it is how my system works. I have four subwoofers two in the front two in the back behind my couch I have a pair of eights in the back they kind of act like Rumblers almost. and a pair of tens in the front the tens go on one sub out to my denon receiver. and the pair of eights goes to its own sub out and it's a magnificent sound all around of course the 8s will be replaced eventually. but upgrades are upgrades for future developments. 1:50
Hey Michael, how are you? I used the method you used, using the y adapter to connect 4 subs. Someone mentioned the eco function, so, I went downstairs and turned the Denon on. I had it in auto mode, so, I turned the eco mode off. I have a pair of SVS PB 1000 Pro in front, and a pair of Klipsch R12’s in the rear. I will hear how it sounds with the eco function off later, but, yesterday, I watched John Wick 2. I had the Denon set at -14, and the gunshots sound like they hurt, I heard them, and felt them.
More than likely, Eco mode will not impact your subwoofers because they’re only being sent a non-powered signal and your internal amplifier in your subwoofers are powering your subs. What you will hear a difference in is your speakers because now you’re utilizing the full potential of the internal amplifier of your Denon
I own the JTR subs that use XLR. They CAN use the RCA inputs, but due to the long distances the RCA is noisey and adds hum. I HAD to move to XLR for any quality. I need the a MiniDSP that uses all XLR inputs and outputs. Wondering what the delay is in making this.
Can I use multiple surround speakers? My home theater has 2 row seat, I want the surround effect can be heard from all listener. I'm using two jbl 3310 which has 8 ohm impedance. I connect the pair of that in parallel per surround channel.
Also if you are going to use a normal splitter do it later in the run closer to the subwoofers you want the split runs to be as short as possible. The length of the cable after the split is more important to be as short as possible.
greats from germany, i would connect 3 subs in my system 3 svs sb 2000pros, i have a marantz 7015 with 2 sub outs , what is better for me 1 on 1 and the 2 on one splitting or all 3 splittet on one sub out ?
OK, thanks, many prefer 3 on 1 because the one alone do it more work then the 2, but you said the sub outs are signals and have nothing do to with power, that was my logic too but many argue other wise. 🙏
@@speedygonzales343 Well the signal does have voltage, and higher the voltage, when your sub amplifies that signal the louder and cleaner the sound will be. So if lets say your signsl is 1.4v, 1 sub on that signal path will get the whole 1.4v to use for it's gain. 2 subs on that signal path and each sub will get 0.6v and you'll need to use more gain to equal the same amplified sound. The 2x4HD however will not only stregnthen your signal, it will make that signal even stonger. So pluging in from 1 sub output from your AVR to the 2x4HD then pluging in 2 subs into the output of the 2x4hd it won't get 0.6v like using a normal Y cable spliter, nor will it get 1.4v like only using 1 sub and getting the full signsl strength from the avr, you'll get like 2v for each sub. Now, don't quote me on the numbers cause they will most likely be different, either + or -. All the rest should be right though, it does strengthen your signal and all that jazz, I just don't know the voltage of the signal from your avr/processor and I don't know by how much that the 2x4HD will boost that signal voltage too, I was just giving you an example. Peace out.
I am trying to figure out. How many subwoofers can do Atmos justice? I know sub woofers produce bass, but do I need 4 vs 2 subwoofers, I mean I have a decent sized room, that I will be plugging into a Denon a1h, after that releases, assuming it’s worth its cost. I am coming from an integra 5.4, think, as well…
One JTR subwoofer will “do Atmos justice” if you only have a single seat. With multiple seats, you want to have multiple subwoofers throughout your room to help smooth out the bass response.
I'm actually looking at the mini dsp HD. My question is in regards to the inputs on the back. Almost every video I see on how to use set it up only uses one input. When and why would I use that second input. My AVR's sub outputs are individual. Can I run those into each of the dsp's inputs? So confused on this 😕
That is a great question. Since there is only one LFE channel, I have not found a reason to use more than one input connected to an AVR. The only reason you have two sub outs on an AVR is so you can adjust their levels independently in your AVR and ease of connecting two subs. The miniDSP does that plus soooooo much more.
@@Youthman makes sense. On my Pioneer I can adjust my subs independently which is kinda cool. Thanks for replying. You are like our personaly Home theater tech support guru. 🤣🤣 Thanks for all you do and you and the family continue to stay blessed. 🙏
Doesn't Mini DSP require a laptop or PC to be plugged in at all times? I'm trying to get DiracLive for my desktop system. Source is a Playstation 5, optical from TV.
No, you plug in the laptop to run REW, set delays, add EQ, time align, then save those settings to the miniDSP (which does stay on and connected at all times, but you do not have to keep your computer plugged in.
Nope, it's for the analog signal coming from your processer and that signal will weaken with using just a splitter/Y cable, but using the HD wil; not only keep your signal stong, it will strengthen it. Plus all the different processing things to fine tune your subs so much further then you ever could without it.
I have a question that has nothing to do with subs.the question is why you didn't tell that the giveaways are just for us,I can kinda understand the shipping is high, but there is one for UK us Australia, but it is my fault I expected fairness when such thing don't even exist.good video btw!
Hi Glen, each brand decides where they are willing to shop to. One reason it is often difficult to offer worldwide is there are times that the recipient may have to pay duties or import fees. If that happens, that’s illegal due to the whole “No purchase necessary.” There are some that are global, some that are US and Canada, some that are US and EU and some that are US only. Life itself has never been fair.
@@jluis5188 you need to further explain how you hooked up the 3rd subwoofer. Are you now splitting one of the sub rca outs? Where is the humming coming from: 1. The third sub? If yes switch the rca cable. If the other sub now hums then it’s the rca cable. 2. If the whole system is humming much more complicated. You can try using the high level inputs of your subs if they have them. Just use additional speaker wire from your main speakers to connect to two of the subs and use only 1 rca sub out for the 3rd subwoofer.
No such thing as overkill bass, IMO, if you have the subs dialed in correctly. The more you have, the more they will evenly distribute bass across the room.
Theoretically, you'd want a different speaker for every frequency. Even with that, it won't be perfect. At what point the human ear can't tell the difference will vary from person to person.
Don't know your room size but off the top of my thinking 6 is absurdly overkill IMO. 3 is even more then enough. you don't get more base by adding more subs.
Hi @Youthman , Can I just connect Sub woofer Line-in and Line-out to do connect multi sub by 16 SUB? AVR_PreOut -> SubA line-in ; SubA line-out -> SubB line-in ; SubB line-out -> SubC line-in; SubC line-out ->...........
No one said you need to have a crap ton of subs. But you certainly can’t get smooth response across multiple seats and especially multiple rows with just one subwoofer. The more subs you have, the smoother you can get the response to be.
Have a dayton audio spa1000 powering 4 rockford fosgate 10 inch dvc subs and I added a Crown xls 1502 powering 2 fockford fosgate p3 d2 12s fot those times I really want to shake the house
@@Youthman My point is that high end AVRs can have a true dual output. This means you can split twice as many times before any significant impact. By no means was I downplaying your advice. Sorry if it came across that way.
I honestly dont see the point of getting a avr or amp these days when bluray and dvd players are being replace with streaming apps and the audio quality isnt gonna be the best since it gonna take up more streaming power
So if you don’t think in an AVR is needed for Home Theater, how are you getting your streaming media (which is pretty terrible) to all of your speakers?
Why so many subs??? My mains and rears are 3-way with 15" woofers. I have 3 subs but only occasionally do I turn even one on as it is more than enough. I'm sure my room is smaller though.
I have yet to find a tower that can reach sub 20Hz. Having multiple subs isn’t about more bass, but rather better seat to seat bass response, headroom and lower distortion.
Minidsp hd won't power any of the subwoofers, it's not an amplifier. Also, it has full range out, not subwoofer out. I know what you meant but people not familiar with minidsp will not.
I still don't get people's obsession with subs. More subs does not mean more base, it might mean a bit more balance but do you want to spend thousands on subs that make very little difference or a nicer projector and speakers. Just saying two subs for most home theaters is more than enough IMO. Anything more is just about pointless. The base you get out of a movie is not changing with with more subs. You get what you get from a movie tract.
It all depends on your size of room, allow do you listen, how low you want it to go. There are a lot of factors that come into play when determining size and quantity of your subwoofers. I have more than enough output and low end extension with my dual subwoofers with (4) 18”.

Hi Youthman - Thanks for ANOTHER great video 👌🏻
I got a Marantz SR5011 with Subwoofer 1 and 2 out on the back.
Do you only use a miniDSP if you use three or more subs? If I add a second sub to my system - is it overkill to connect a miniDSP to each of the sub out’s?
It’s never overkill. The mini DSP allows you to time a line both of your subwoofers and EQ them
I have one MiniDSP connected to 2 subs and plan to connecting an additional (3rd) sub in the future. You only need one MiniDSP 2x4 HD for up to 4 subs.
Hey very cool info Youthman. This will solve a lot of people's problems when hooking up more subs from a one unit source.
Thank you, Don
Thanks for the breakdown Youthman! 👍🏾
Glad you enjoyed the video Vince

Win win. 👍
Wives!
That’s great to hear your hard work is paying off. Time to sit back and enjoy…for now lol
Great video, I have two 10” ported subs looking to add two more subs. Is it better to stick with 10” inch or go with two larger subs.?
I personally went from a 10 inch to a 15 inch, once I did that 16 years ago, I have never owned anything smaller than a 15 inch.
Is there a benefit to getting a miniDSP if I'm running 2 subwoofers off my Denon X8500HA, which already has 2 outputs?
You rock!!! Youthman for president!!! 😁
So if I'm running 2 mini dsp hds, how would I run them both to the computer?
Im running 2 full marty 21s, and 2 full marty 18s now. I would like to add 2 devastator 21s. I like overkill.
How did you time align and EQ them?
@@Youthman - a friend helps with measuring tools. The response of this double array is a straight line between 16 and 80 Hz. It doesn’t sound spectacular but very natural like thunder or deep bass in a a car accident.
Very cool.
Can i use this mini dsp to slpit center speaker?
Honestly how you described it is how my system works. I have four subwoofers two in the front two in the back behind my couch I have a pair of eights in the back they kind of act like Rumblers almost. and a pair of tens in the front the tens go on one sub out to my denon receiver. and the pair of eights goes to its own sub out and it's a magnificent sound all around of course the 8s will be replaced eventually. but upgrades are upgrades for future developments.

Nice!
So my onkyo 686 has a mono subwoofer pre out. Should I buy a mini dsp for a 2 channel subwoofer configuration and how would you set that up properly?
As shared in the video, I recommend the miniDSP if you are running two or more subs. Links to Brad’s series for the how to setup
@@Youthman thank you 🙏🏼
I own the JTR subs that use XLR.
They CAN use the RCA inputs, but due to the long distances the RCA is noisey and adds hum. I HAD to move to XLR for any quality.
I need the a MiniDSP that uses all XLR inputs and outputs. Wondering what the delay is in making this.
I initially thought the mini DSP Flex was a 2x4 HD with XLR. But I’m not sure that’s the exact application though. At least take a look at it.
Which would you recommend besides trinnov(top dog)...Denon or Marantz avr and processors
Both are great option. I chose Marantz and have been very pleased.
Can I use multiple surround speakers? My home theater has 2 row seat, I want the surround effect can be heard from all listener. I'm using two jbl 3310 which has 8 ohm impedance. I connect the pair of that in parallel per surround channel.
Mini DSP is just a cool thing to have.
For sure.
Great video! 😀
Thank you Stephen
Also if you are going to use a normal splitter do it later in the run closer to the subwoofers you want the split runs to be as short as possible. The length of the cable after the split is more important to be as short as possible.
Why?
You won’t hear a difference
@@Youthman Most likely not but my point here was cost. It's cheaper to split later as there is less cables etc.
Ok. You didn’t mention that. The way it’s worded seems like there will be an audible difference.
@@Youthmansure if that was a concern it's valid to delay the split at the end of the day.
I use Dayton audio 8x4 cap because I have six subs. Works good
Does the MiniDSP have signal gain?
Can I use a passthrough subwoofer to a ac receiver
If I went over four subs, I'd be seeing an ear doctor regularly. But it's a very fun thought! Admittably got close to doing four in the new setup.
you still have the miniDSP Flex ?
I do, just haven’t had an opportunity to hook it up yet.
greats from germany, i would connect 3 subs in my system 3 svs sb 2000pros, i have a marantz 7015 with 2 sub outs , what is better for me 1 on 1 and the 2 on one splitting or all 3 splittet on one sub out ?
I personally would do 1 on 1 and 2 on 1
OK, thanks, many prefer 3 on 1 because the one alone do it more work then the 2, but you said the sub outs are signals and have nothing do to with power, that was my logic too but many argue other wise.
The second subport can be given 2 the VOG (Auro-3d) channel as option....
You can also get a vsub 1 or a svs sound path and go wire less
Please make video for bass management in open room
Does the HD really do anything though? You are using only analog inputs and I imagine the "HD" features are only using usb or optical
@@Youthman no problem it's fine
All you need is two good sub. 👍 that it.
Depends on whether you have multiple seats and if you care to have good seat to seat response.
Tried connecting a 3rd sub and instantly get humming. In pairs all work fine. Onkyo nr6100 two sub rca outs on back.
@@jluis5188 you need to further explain how you hooked up the 3rd subwoofer.
Are you now splitting one of the sub rca outs?
Where is the humming coming from:
If You're not using REW (and a DSP) to align phase, inverting even where necessary, You are leaving dBs on the table.
I split one sub out to four subs with 0 issue. You would have to be splitting and running some long distances before it degrades noticeably.
dayton dsp 4x8?
I have a stopping point 6 the max 8 for overkill and it won't add to much bass sound quality tell me I'm wrong
No such thing as overkill bass, IMO, if you have the subs dialed in correctly. The more you have, the more they will evenly distribute bass across the room.
👆👆👆
Theoretically, you'd want a different speaker for every frequency. Even with that, it won't be perfect.
At what point the human ear can't tell the difference will vary from person to person.
Different speaker for every frequency? Where did you get that from?
Don't know your room size but off the top of my thinking 6 is absurdly overkill IMO. 3 is even more then enough. you don't get more base by adding more subs.
Hi @Youthman , Can I just connect Sub woofer Line-in and Line-out to do connect multi sub by 16 SUB?
AVR_PreOut -> SubA line-in ; SubA line-out -> SubB line-in ; SubB line-out -> SubC line-in; SubC line-out ->...........
The most umportant thing ive noticed in home theater is you need a crap ton of subs all over the room to get the best dispersion of bass waves.
Bear in mind, most of your mid to lower end AVRs "dual" output is one signal that's internally split.
That doesn’t matter. It’s all the same LFE channel. It’s no different than adding a Y splitter
@@Youthman
My point is that high end AVRs can have a true dual output. This means you can split twice as many times before any significant impact.
By no means was I downplaying your advice. Sorry if it came across that way.
I didn’t take offense. I didn’t understand what you were stating. Appreciate the tip
Sir is woven or perforated screen better for image and sound quality......
Both have pros and cons. I would recommend doing some research to see what works best for your needs.

Will pioneer mcacc advanced do a good job of calibration and with multiple subs? So I don't need this stupid fuckin mini dsp or rew?
Minidsp hd won't power any of the subwoofers, it's not an amplifier. Also, it has full range out, not subwoofer out. I know what you meant but people not familiar with minidsp will not.
Subwoofers have internal amplifiers the mini DSP doesn’t need to power them
@@Youthman I know, that's not what you said in the video though. Some subs are passive too.

Awesome! I didn’t have subwoofers in my room until I was married. 🤣
@@Youthman damn🥲times were rough

I've got 9 powered subs connected to one lfe sub out and work just fine.
I hate subwoofers in my 7.1 system.
Hate or have?
