Chase The Sun North 2022

- So I know I said you'd never catch me riding 200 miles (320km) on the longest day, from Sunset to Sunrise, but after being inspired by last years CTS South riders, and feeling kind of a fraud for crossing the finish line with them. I decided I'd enter, but of course, the route would have to be 100% new roads if you know anything about me by now, it's my love of exploring on my bike. So I entered the 205 mile ride, Chase the Sun North, which ended up being on my own for a lone adventure. Whitley Bay to Ayr in Scotland was the draw, my first time into Scotland would be under my own steam. You knew it was going to be an incredible day, when you greeted with a magnificent sunrise. All that was now required was pedaling for an entire day, trying to beat the sunset on the coast of the UK. All that was required, was me cycling further than I ever have before, which was a thought that terrified me and left me with several disturbed nights sleep, the closer the event got. Could I actually ride across a country, in a day!

The video is fantastic you've done an amazing job, Andrea and I are so proud of you, it was a long long way in the camper, never mind on your bike, we are both so pleased that we were able to give you some support and we had a fantastic week end. Lots of love to you.
Thanks again Dad, I couldn’t have done it without either of you. It made the stops quicker and easier and I could just focus on pedalling my bike and enjoying the stunning scenery.
You can't buy happiness... but you can buy a bicycle !!!
Great job!!! 👌👍
Thank you, Why stop at one bike then!!? 😂
Awesome. Inspirational
Thank you Mike, I’m still not sure how it all came together for that one day. Especially as my fitness is currently at rock bottom. The long road back starts today. When that day was the best I’ve ever felt on a bike. Special memories!
Great video Darren - I had a chat with Andrea at Kielder and met her beautiful flat coat Amber. Looks like you finished a couple of hours in front of us. That last 20 miles were the longest ever 🙂
Thanks Ralph, we seemed to keep saying there was 20 miles left for what felt like 20 miles!!! It must have been some kind of vortex! 😂 I still can’t believe I actually did it. Well done on completing it, it was a great day out.
Great video to remember the day by. A pleasure riding with you!
Thanks Dave, how are you feeling now? I’ve surprised myself that I’m still feeling really good today.
@@DarrenPhillips slight fatigue but generally ok, no real aches or pains 👍 It sounds like you are ready for a longer ride now you have a double centuary in the bag!
@@congorobot someone has already suggested an Ultra distance event, I might stick to some shorter rides for a while and climbing up a few mountains in Switzerland. 😂
@@DarrenPhillips I look forward with anticipation to viewing the next video...
You’re an inspiration! Stunning effort and video. Well done.
Thanks Peter, in that case, Have I inspired you to enter next year? 😜
@@DarrenPhillips it’s early days for me and I’m not sure I will ever get to that standard but I will definitely sign up to something. There is a local cancer charity ride in September of 50 miles so that looks challenging enough at the present. Keep up the videos and keep smiling! Cheers
@@peterroberts6380 We all start somewhere Peter. When I first started riding, I could barely make it 5 miles from Glastonbury to Pilton and had to walk part of the hill at North Wootton. I entered my first 60 miles sportive having only ever ridden as far as 30 miles. The main thing is enjoy riding however far that is, the more you enjoy it, the further you’ll want to go.
@@DarrenPhillips You are so right Darren. I have recently taken early retirement, bought myself a Domane AL5 and so far get out every couple of days and come back legs aching with a big smile on my face. I’m generally doing 20-25 miles at a time so hopefully can head out on some longer runs soon. Thanks again.
Great, inspirational vid! The sunrise looked like a painted backdrop it was so perfect!
Thanks John, that Sunrise was amazing, you just knew it would be a good day!
Philip..... congratulations on that brilliant ride. Not only am I mega impressed on the distance and time it took you. But also your vlogging skills are superb. I've hit that subscribe button straight away after watching that video. Brilliant stuff. 👍🏻
Thank you Lloyd, welcome to the channel, if you liked that one, then I have over 200 videos now for you to enjoy!!
well done Darren EPIC ride in some of the most beautiful countryside in the world ( in my opinion ), was born just 5 miles from the start and have not seen it for 15 years so for that thank you.
Thanks David, I’m glad I could take you back. It was an incredible ride and some absolutely stunning scenery on view. I loved the whole thing.
Amazing...you should be so proud of yourself. Yet again you got some beautiful scenery. 👏 👏 😃
Thanks Di! It was stunning, one of my favourite rides ever.
A family adventure! What a cracking video, a great ride and a great adventure. Kudos for your longest ride, with plenty of hills into that headwind - we could see the scenery being blown away by the wind! Very epic views - what an incredible route.
Thanks Brian, it’s probably the most time I’ve spent with Dad since he followed me across France on 2014, when I did my charity ride Coast to Coast on aid of Prostate Cancer. It was an incredible route though, and I’m glad I decided to make the effort to go North. I’m already thinking of tackling the Irish or Italian versions next year.
Brilliant Darren, it looked amazing, knew you would do it, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Bob, I couldn’t believe how good my legs were on the day. I’m hoping I’ve still got them this week, as I’m in the Alps in Switzerland, hoping to tick off a few big climbs.
Bloody awesome Darren, stunning shots, amazing job mate 👏🏻
Thank you Simon, that sunrise was worth not sleeping a wink just to make the start for 4am! I cannot recommend this ride highly enough!
Great accomplishment Darren! Thanks for sharing!
And thank you for watching Rob. I’m now working out what the next challenge is going to be. 🤔
Well done Darren!! Great ride and great video! Amazing sunrise and scenery and a dry finish is a bonus! 👏👏👏😁
Thanks Jason, I was thinking afterwards, after battling that headwind for 200 miles. If you had the choice, would you have dry and a headwind for 200 miles or wet and a tailwind for 200 miles? I’d probably still take the headwind!! 🤔
Very nice, thank you.
Thanks Gary!
Brilliant. Well done. Looked a great route apart from the wind but at least no rain. I told my wife I’d love to do this next year. She thought I was mad. We’ll see 😎
Do it Phil, you won’t regret it, it’s an amazing ride. You just have to prepare properly and put in the work. I was told it was very rare for the wind to be blowing I that direction and it’s usually the other way around, which would have been a tailwind! I need to find my next challenge, but I’m not sure what yet!
Absolutely superb Darren - Hats off to you that was an epic ride. It looks a great atmosphere on there it really does. Looking forward to what you get up to next..
Thanks Dave, Switzerland is next, so hopefully I will have a week of videos from the Swiss Alps In Mid July.
Awesome ride Darren.. Respect my friend... Great video and what an accomplishment.
Thanks Andy! I was caught up just getting to the end on the day. Whilst editing the video, it finally hit me of that it was over and that I’d actually done it, enjoyed it and rode so well on the day, that I had a bit of a cry! It’s been a long time coming and has been giving me many sleepless nights just worrying about it. But I’m so happy to have done it. I can now have a little break before I go to Switzerland for a cycling holiday and plan what’s next!
Awesome video, incredible landscape, thanks for sharing!
Thanks Marta, it was an enjoyable day out, the scenery was incredible. I’ll definitely be back for some more Scottish adventures after this. Probably in a few shorter rides though!!
Fantastic well done Darren 👍
Thanks Chris!
Wonderful job, Darren. Congratulations on quite an accomplishment. I'm enjoying the new channel.
Thanks Roger!
Excellent video Darren and well done on getting across the line.
Great watch.
Thanks Ade, despite how terrified I have been of this ride, especially the closer it got. I had an amazing ride, one I will never forget on a long time. It was well worth all the sleepless nights.
Kudos to you Darren a truly fantastic effort 👍🚴♂️
Thanks Chris, I think you lot all had more faith in me than I did and I definitely surprised myself with how good I felt on the day and how good I’ve felt since.
Well done Darren. 🙌🏻🙌🏻 a grand out
Thanks John, It was an awesome weekend from start to finish.
Well done Darren, fantastic achievement, glad you enjoyed it too 👍
Thanks Trevor, it was everything I like about cycling. If I can inspire just one person to sign up for next year, that would be amazing!
Inspirational this vlog Darren, fantastic effort plus lugging that kit around on a ride of epic proportions is something else!! I struggle with my phone in a bag on a Gran Fondo!! Ace effort once again!
Thanks Lewis! Although the bag I had on my back was only my clothes I’d worn into the hotel the night before, which I left with my Dad at Kielder. But oddly, something seemed to happen on the day where everything came together when I needed it. If it wasn’t for the wind at the end, I could have carried on riding. Whether it was the adrenaline from the event or all my training and preparation, I don’t know. But I thoroughly enjoyed the day, the ride and the whole experience.
Great achievement Darren, chapeau sir 🏅
Thanks! I’ll take that medal as the event don’t do one, and I even lost my ribbon at some point, so I haven’t even got a memento!! 🙁
Epic, well done! I like those Stolen Goat chase the sun jerseys
They did look nice didn’t they? Thank you
Massive pat on the back, what an achievement.
Thank you Colin!
Don't get me wrong a fantastic achievement and all that but surely the ride to the ride was further 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Epic job Darren 👍
It was a big weekend of travelling for sure!
Just after I started to drive home from Dad’s near Crewe, I looked at the Sat Nav and it said 149 miles, I thought “that’s a long way to go” then remembered I’d cycled further the day before!! 😂 Good Old Dad did 187 miles up to Newcastle, then another 50 miles to Kielder, did 150 miles or more following me on Saturday and then drove 300 miles home to Crewe. It’s a good job the fuel isn’t expensive or anything 😂🤪
Looks beautiful, just completed CTS south this year, guess i'm gonna have to do them all now aren't i... next stop CTS North 2025, Ireland 2026, Italy 2027!
Congratulations on finishing CTS South. That was the version I’d first heard of, when my friends decided to take on the challenge. But when I heard there was a North version, I fancied the idea of it more. Due to the fact the last 50 odd miles was in familiar territory and roads I knew well. So I felt the new unexplored roads of Scotland would be more inspiring when the going got tough at the end of the 200 miles. I did really enjoy the route, especially the part just after we crossed the border into Scotland. Such epic scenery. I was happy to tick it off as completed, so to be thinking about doing another one, when the memories of the effort are still fresh in your mind, you have my upmost respect sir!! But do let me know if you prefer the North or the South better?!!
@@DarrenPhillips Congrats to you too mate, you did amazingly well, to be honest the south london section was not too enjoyable, massive potholes everywhere, very easy to get lost ( a lot of lads had issues with garmins GPS delaying or not working at all due to the condensed amount of people all using it at the same time in such a busy area) and of course the aggressive london drivers screaming abuse at you. Had one crazy guy in a jeep miss our peloton by about 2 feet beeping his horn and screaming at us for holding him up for 1 min haha. but once clear of london it was stunning, particularly mendip hills up to cheddar gorge and the decent are things i'll remember for the rest of my life. I gave up trying to win after a few mechanicals and some logistical errors, found myself a pack of riders to have a laugh with and just settled in at a nice pace that would get us there in time for sunset and had a far better time, really wish i had done that in the first half too, it really is a ride not a race. Thanks for making this video, it's really well put together and really captures the essence of what this event is all about. Beautiful scenery, fantastic people, great conversation and smooth riding. Cheers!
Yes, the London experience did come up in conversations about the event. I don’t think anyone really enjoyed it.
Thank you
Super humble ending, what a stunning ride
Thank you, it was a great day out on a bike. I’d began to fear it the closer it got, but on the day everything worked out perfectly. I put in the hard work and prepared as best as I could and felt rewarded, when my body allowed me to achieve the feat of riding further than I have ever done before. I started to drive home from Dad’s yesterday and looked at the Sat Nav after I’d been driving a while and it said 149 miles to home. My first thought was that’s a long way, then realised I’d cycled further than that the day before. I think it hit me today as I made the ending of the video, as I have cried all three times I’ve watched sit back through. The realisation of what I’ve achieved and how grateful I was to my Dad and Andrea for helping me do it. I’m glad you liked it.
@@DarrenPhillips from where we’ve been sitting the lead up had been nothing but inspirational and despite your lead up anxiety it’s been nothing but fun for us to watch the lead up, thanks for bringing us non riders along. As a direct result of the lead up 2 weeks ago I did my first 16 miles on a 10 year old specialized allez and I had the best time, now still riding for my goal to do Yeovil - Glastonbury tour and back just so I can say, “oh look the Tour”. Hope your legs ain’t to sore 👍
😂 That comment has made my day, Thank you so much, it means a lot to me 🫶🙏
Ohhh look there’s me😁😂
I hope I got your good side!! 😜
@@DarrenPhillips haha yeah I’m hiding behind my team member😂 FWCC in bright yellow near the start of the video. You did an awesome time! Well done!

Cracking start with a beautiful sunrise, brilliant ride and climbing Darren, I really admire you for completing a fantastic ride, are you going to do the return ride tomorrow 😁😁😁😁
I’m already home Terry, the drive took longer than the ride!! 😂
Time to put my feet up for a few weeks, I have some family commitments and then a week in Switzerland making videos in early July. Thank you Terry!
Truly amazing effort Darren. Looked like such a beautiful ride. You are made of special stuff. Maybe some ultra cycling might be good for you??? 👏
Thanks Steve, I might have found my specialty by accident!! Perhaps I ought to look into the Transcontinental or RaaM 😂🤔
@@DarrenPhillips you definitely should. 👍
Great video and well done on the achievement. Have to say the route and scenery looked great and good choice compared to South CTS!
I was very pleased with the route, it was everything I’d hoped for. Although it did take a while to drive up and back, I’m glad I chose that one. It was an incredible experience. Thanks Nigel.
Thanks for posting! Makes me want to do a challenging ride like that here in the States. Also…it seemed like most of the route was devoid of cars. Were parts of the route blocked to cyclists only?
Thanks Scott, No the roads were open, but there just weren’t many cars on route. We passed through a couple of towns and did a few main roads, where there were more cars. But it was pretty much empty roads. Although a Coast to Coast I’m the States might be a little over 200 miles!!
@@DarrenPhillips yeah a coastal ride would be well over 4,000 miles I’m sure. 😜
What happened to Mendip Cycling?
They’re still going, I’m just not a member anymore. It’s too long to explain, but I did a video called Time for a Change, I’ll link it below.

I was just thinking how bland the scenery is
There was a lot of great scenery, it was an unforgettable ride for all the right reasons. It is a great place to ride your bike though. The camera never does it justice.
Well, you never mentioned this at dinner . 🥹 But what a fantastic achievement . Well done son. be proud ! We are . Love Mom & Colin ❤️❤️🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🚵♀️
Well if you watched my videos Mum, you’ll have known as I’ve mentioned it in every video for months!! 😂😜
The original plan wasn’t for Dad to support me, but he and Andrea stepped in last minute to help me out.
