So, I’m finally ready to say this. Eddard is the one honorable person who doesn’t do anything monstrous in the First Book. He’s also a dumbass.
He should have listened to the deserter whether he killed him or not. He shouldn’t have killed Lady and traumatized his own child for a vile demoness. And(I’m willing to be refuted here), he should have said whatever needed to be said to stay alive and protect his children as well as he could.
I now want to read the book again to make sure I have all this straight, but dissent is welcome. Ned’s a terrific baddass.
You're not wrong, his greatest strength come from his being "the Honorable Ned Stark", but that's also his greatest weakness. He believed that the others were as honorable as he. Yes, he should have listened to the deserter, he shouldn't have killed Lady, but he did those that he thought was the honorable thing to do. He left to be Hand of the King as that was what he felt was his duty. He killed Lady out of respect for Robert after Cersei made the demand and to save face.
Also, before his death, he did say what he needed to stay alive - He was meant to go to the Wall. Joffrey threw a wrench in that plan when he demanded Ned Stark's head. Given that men loyal to Ned at least tried to get Arya out of King's Landing means that while he thought he was going to be sent to the wall he did what he felt he could do to save his children before he lost his lands and titles as Warden of the North.
