Welcome back to the show! Today we're behind the wheel of a moderately modified and tuned BMW 135i. With a twin turbo N54 Inline 6 under the hood powering the rear wheels and a manual gearbox to control the symphony of it all, this 135i is perfectly modified for a street/daily setting. It's got plenty enough power to shove you back in your seat and get a little sideways on the backroads, but not so much that you're constantly having to worry about failed engine components. The perfect daily driver meets weekend warrior in what is truly the sweet spot in modern BMW sports coupes. Enjoy!

What would you guys rather have?! This, or the new M340i... tough call. (p.s. TRD widebody AE86 feature drops Thursday morning)
Of course this! With proper suspension and tires it would be way more raw and direct
@@davej1212 the GT is at least 3705 lbs. The GT 350 with Tremec is where it's at
N55 M2 ;)
I work at a BMW and the M340i is cool, but it deosnt capture me like the way other BMW's from last generation and beyond. That 135i is a special car so that's the one I'd go for.
Neither, my boosted E46 M3 was in a completely different league compared to my single turbo E90 335i!
I’ve had 3 335i’s now. If you can turn a wrench, you’ll be just fine.
I would add being able to read forums
@@JerrickBakweedstash Better the TIS manuals.
Max Nix TIS manuals? I’m curious where you get those from.
they must be shit if you had to get 3 of them im jk
If you're willing to buy 3 of them you'll be just fine...kidding. I do love BMWs. I put more time and money into my old e36 than cars I own with almost twice the horsepower and I still hang onto it because for whatever reason I just love working on the car.
If you're not similar in this regard I'd suggest buying a mercedes instead.
Such an amazing car! I recently purchased my first REAL drivers car (2012 135i M sport) and I couldn’t be happier! This platform, even in its stock form, is just a joy to drive!
I've got a 2008 135i M coupe.
Absolutely sooo much fun to drive.
My commute to work is all country roads in Japan.
Probably less than 50 of them in the country.
BMW only made about 6300 of them.
Awesome car.
I often see vids on here of E82s in japan, didn't know there are such few there. I think the smaller (correct) size of this chassis definitely makes it more likable
@@DigitalDissident definitely 😬
I'm actually thinking of importing one from Japan to Ireland, they are great value over there with very low miles! Plus fully imported it would be near half the price of one here !
135i is great. my opinion is that the stock power is pretty much all you need. you can do basic power mods but you mostly want to get the suspension sorted on the car and the car will be great.
What coilovers you recommend?
@@johnquiles426 most important part is to get negative camber on the car. m3 control arms and camber plates will get you there. an lsd is also important
Despite their issues, I don't think I could ever not own an n54. Love mine!
Mic Raw any “issue” I’ve ever had was really just what happens when you tune a car. Nothing major at all. Spark plugs. Coil packs. Minor oil leak fix. Very minor boost leak from the front DV valve. Nothing crazy. I love my 335i honestly
@@teakgeiger6792 that's awesome! Same here just basic maintenance, index 12's, hpfp, fpr, plugs and coils. Inlets, custom tune, and lsd are next 😁
@@micraw714 hahah funny how n54 boys convince themselves its 'basic' maintenance
same bro definitely worth it. after getting used to an n54 it’s not too bad owning one🥳
Dan kim it’s not a Honda
N54 finally getting some love
I’d love to see a parts list on this car or get the owners social media. This is the nicest sounding, best looking 135i I’ve seen
For me 600Whp with upgraded stage 2+ twin turbos is the sweet spot for my daily driving in my e93 n54 335i.
N54 4 life she brings a'lot of pain but a'lot of joy its worth the reward .Take care of her and she will take care of you I love mine.
If you ever lived in the 80's and your dad happened to own an E12, 530i, this would actually sound pretty familiar and nostalgic.
i have always thought the bmw 1 series was a new e30, probably the closest thing you could buy from them today.
So much love for the e82 chassis here
Off to Guantanamo Marcus!
N54 and B58 for sure two of BMW's best engines of recent years
The n63tu is also pretty good. High hp numbers especially when u do a stage 1 turbo upgrade w meth
@@206.j the n63tu's are monsters that's for sure
Love my 135, but BMW's 1st mass produced Turbo car was the 2002 Turbo back in the 1970s, they also had a 7 series that was turbo.
The 2002 had less than 1700 examples. Not exactly mass produced. And the 7 series shares this same engine. As does the 335i
@@codybirch8872 they weren't making n54s in 1983
best car chennel on youtube hope you guys get more credit ,keep up the great content
have always watched this channel, im not sure why he doesnt have atleast 1 mill subs by now. Content is on par with the smoking tire.
Honestly speaking from a caribbean car culture perspective..... The louder the better just so long as your making the speed to compensate for the noise
You guys wanna hear straight piped n54?
F yeah!
I have a 2008 135i msport and I will never sell it. Its perfect
That intake setup is probably the best I've seen, very neat with the air filters. Can anyone tell me if thats a kit I could purchase?
hey bro search for aFe N54 intake, this looks like it
I'd love to drive a loud 135i and get flipped off every day haha
I had a BMS tuned 135i with 30 k miles when I sold it, such a fun car I miss it. I threw 285’s (I think it was) in the back and that would sit there and spit white smoke when I took off. I now how have a 2022 GR86, wish I had the bmw motor in it. Used to chase the blow off valve lol.
Thank you for this review! Loved it.
Unfortunately, no car sounds good straight Piped. Absolutely none. Completely straight Piped with smaller back boxes makes the car sound AWESOME! It makes it have a deep tone under low Revs and screams under load. Owner take note.
Smaller back boxes 🤔
@@Headxoxote Yeah. As in not completely straight piped. Sounds horrible. Some small back boxes really create a nice deeper bass.
DrStrange1000 Do you mean mufflers?
@@Headxoxote In the UK, we call back boxes the last set of restrictions before the tail pipes. I believe you guys call em mufflers.
DrStrange1000 hmm didn’t know that
I’m from Brazil so i don’t always get the slangs haha
Learnt something new today.
Is a Mercedes cap legal in a BMW review?
This might be a good trade-in for my 2006 G35 Coupe 6MT; I’ve thinking about a 135i or 335i. 🤔
I had the same G35... trust me, it's a great idea. That N54 turbo is unreal, especially in the 135i.
Brett H I also have a Mk3 Supra with a 2JZGTE swapped in; so I don’t need another project car. But with simple mods, I would consider getting a 135i or 335i.
@@755hp Get a 135 or 335 with the N55 engine. They are more reliable (engine is solid, supporting components tend to break less than an N54 car), but they do make less power, mod for mod vs an N54. Overall, my 135i is amazing with just a downpipe, intercooler upgrade, M3 suspension bits, and a tune.
I wanna trade my g for one as well
I did exactly that. Love my 135i. It has had the usual issues (water pump, injectors, valve cover, the list is long) but it responds well to modification and it is the right size. 400hp in a 3300 lb car is great
Actually the i-Drive is what makes the 1 series look a lot better on the inside! Maps could easily be updated by yourself, and it generally gives you a nice screen to see your trip numbers and connect change tracks etc.
I am always thankful that mine doesn't have a stupid idrive system. Cleaner without, less weight, less to break, no outdated infotainment, and I'd never use it... driver focused
Proud to own one on E60 blend w/ inlets
I work at motorwerkes love seeing the service sticker on the windshield
Mine is lemans blue too with Boston coral interior. Also owned the E92 335, E60 M5 and F30 328
There were a few teething issues, including a failed water pump the were handled under warranty. My 2008 has been trouble-free for years. Probably the last gasoline-powered vehicle I'll own. I'd never sell it.
I really like the single exhaust. Looks clean and like it belongs there.
no, the factory dual tips look better. Single pipe exhausts are for JDM ricers & the fact that this is a chopped off straight pipe makes it worse.
N54 for life sold my e92 thinking a e90 bc starting a family love the look of the lci
I shove my kid in the back. Screw selling cars because “family”
yes sir I have a e92 and I be putting my baby in the back as well😂 he’s little so he fits💀
@@danielturcios7218 haha yeah I did for awhile but the back was gutted
Get that wagon
N54 with 6mt swap into an E91 over any suv/van/truck is the ultimate family car if you still wanna have fun, or an E61 535 n54
Try Finding a BMW 135i with a manual used now a days is like trying to find a Dinosaur bone far & few in between .
J Taylor I've found plenty lol I'm passing though
I'm glad to see someone else said it in the comments. As far as I'm concerned this is the current supra.
Which is ironic given the current supra.
personally when I get a 135 I'm not going to tune it so I'll probably get the N55.
Last seen everything on the one series including V8 swaps. As far as I'm concerned the one series has the most BMW thing BMW is made in the last 10 years. 2 series & M2 excluded.
very nice footage, great work mate
What a great job you have.
Nice car! Love the LH cap!
I'm 6ft3 in I really like little cars thinking about it
Get the 135i with N55, later more reliable refined engine & single turbo. Also, comes with LCI trim. 2011-2013
Twin scroll, not single.
@@unluckeeeeequibble, it's still only 1 turbo innit :)
(I have a non-LCI 2010 135i with an N55 and DCT. Non I-Drive too. Wish it was manual but otherwise I love driving it.)
i want one so bad... not a fan of straight pipe on these motors tho
Single turbo swap is where this motor sounds amazing.
2:09 The dog though
I guess mine is the ultimate stripper model then; it hasn't even got a sunroof 😂
You really need to test a 2011-2013 135i with the DCT trans (stock or modded). It drives like a more analog M2 lite & is one of the best kept secrets of the car world ;)
frostydc4 n55

So underrated
Guillermo Juarez can’t wait till I get pure stage 2 for my car. How are you liking it?

What a coinkidink.
I also lust after an R33 GTR or GTST.
I bought an e82 N54 instead! Love this damn car.
Love the drivability, looks, tunability. Hate the wheel fitment, hate the NAV, hate the maintenance bills, but I still love it.

I just saw a 2013 version, 23k miles, 1 owner, manual going for 21k in Jersey.... Made an appointment to drive it, may finally become a part of the BMW fan. Been driving Asian cars since 16.
so weird how you say the steering is light. owned 13 bmws and my 135i is by far the heaviest ive had. oh and ive driven every m3 model. e90/92 was by by far the worst m3 ever made. BUT i do love your channel, you make great reviews but we just have different opinions, which is fine of course. keep it up, i love it.
Like the way the exhaust pipe sounds! What are the specs for your wheels? They are nice and i like the way they the car sits on them..well kind of..you know what i mean...
Sounds like he needs a 2.5 bar map sensor if not dont already, could be why boost cut!!
Question, have you ever do a video with a 135i with the N55 motor and same mods? Only because i have a 135i with the N55.
N55 is better, good on you
Alright, explain that rig you have in the car holding up the camera.
Trade secret, sorry. :) I can say no electronic gimbals were used at all in shooting this video though.
Roads Untraveled This how you’re going to do me man. You Canadians are supposed to be nice and sharing. 😩😂.
Sorry I totally thought you meant how we got our rolling shots. The rig inside the car is just a 2-suction cup system. One big one to hold the weight of the camera, and one smaller one to stabilize the footage!
DAMN! That is one hot....Boy! I don't hate the car, but I will take the boy.
Its not that the engine isn’t reliable, its everything around it isn’t reliable. The N54 block can take a nasty beat down to 800hp from factory but everything else around it is just terrible
From my understanding the most unreliable part is the high pressure fuel pump, all else is ok
fozpringle1 water pump aswell.
Yip. Alternator, hpfp, coils, wastegates... n55 seems like a way better option if you’re happy with 400
I think some of you are getting your info from old sources.. or social media which is uhh, let's just say, not the most accurate 😂
Injectors are also trash unless they’re index 12’s lol
nice build!!
Straight pipe dawg that’s all she care about
Mercedes cap in a bmw, a Little respect hahah
Looking to purchase one of these, would you guys recommend an e46 m3 or one of these?
This car sounds amazing ❤️❤️❤️
I LOVE THAT CAR!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Thinking about getting one and doing a rally look to it
I hope you didn't get one... hate to see kids chop up & rice out nice cars with tacky rally stuff, go buy a subaru
What are the exhaust tips?
5 seconds in and this review is not an accurate representation of this car... Used your blinker.
Kidding man, really nice car and a great video once again!
