I tried the RTV route once. Never again. The engine would not even turn. The gasket is needed not only for sealing, but to maintain the proper crankshaft endplay. Briggs and Stratton carries crankcase gaskets of different thicknesses just for that reason. I wouldn't be surprised if Tecumseh did as well.
I just got the same mower free and was told the shaft was bent, but the shaft looks good and instead it looks like it's been leaking oil for a while to me. It's probably worth trying this fix! Thanks

You are correct about the possible damages. If you want you can try to keep the engine running with starting fluid long enough to hear if there is any rod knock.
Great vid I am working on the exact same motor. This motor is on a 1995 Sears walk behind weed eater and leaked oil from day one. I hadn't used it in some 20 years so I brought it out, cleaned the carb out real good and changed the oil, I used Amsoil 100% synthetic. That oil leak reappeared with vengeance losing 6 oz of oil in ten minutes! This oil leak was directly below the cylinder and appears to be an engineering fault, Permatex should do the trick!😉

An oldie but goodie. Am getting ready to do this exact job. Bought gasket set and oil seal so will have to decide if I am going with Permatex or gasket. Maybe both!
Helpful. Question: The driveshaft has a spline. amy key was sheared off from the pulley/blade collar but I don't think its replaceable (looks like it was a weld from outside). wierd. Thoughts? If I torque down the blade bolt I dont think it will spin. At least not easily.

Excellent video! I"m still getting an oil leak though. I have a Toro 6.5 HP, Tecumseh Engine Model # LV195EA-362089D. Any chance oil can be coming out of the top part of the engine? Can a crankcase breather go bad?. I put in 18 oz of oil. Max is 20 oz and wondering if that is too much or if the crankcase breather could be going bad. Any ideas are much appreciated. Thanks
@@HomeGaragechannel Replaced breather cover. Looks like that was the final issue. No more leaks. Had to take flywheel off to get to the breather cover. Bought this mower in 2006 I believe so it was tough to get the flywheel off but it's all working now. Home Garage Channel is awesome. Thank you!
@@HomeGaragechannel after applying the gasket maker I can’t get the cover back on. Get about an inch away but gets stuck from there. The governor gear is not to the camshaft gear yet so that’s not the issue

Perhaps you can help me. I’m working on the same engine right now for a friend and it’s leaking oil from the governor rod. I guessing it’s the PCV a valve of what ever is used on this engine. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated greatly. Thank you in advance.
have you cleaned around the Governor rod area, to confirm If it's leaking? I just want to make sure, Because these engines have a large rubber cap, on top of the engine, that sometimes leaks oil, and it coat the side of the engine where the governor rod is.
I replaced the oil pan gasket on my Toro with a Tecumseh engine. Now it's jammed. Did I put it together incorrectly? Do I need to set any gears before reassembly?
I have a toro tecumseh engine from out of winter storage i found oil on the ground so i lifted my mower and found oil leaks I will take a look at the oil sump gasket and the gasket at the blade shaft

I have since seen another video where the person said there are tabs on it that you squeeze with needle nose . I am waiting for the gasket to show up. Hoping for the best. Hello again, question for you. I have the engine off and the 6 bolts out. It is on there pretty good. My question is does the oil filler come off? I see it is close to the cover. How did you get the cover apart? I did tap a bit but nothing so i'm wondering if the oil fill is in the way. Thanks
@@HomeGaragechannel Apparently this was not my leak. I re-sealed the engine (the gasket looked good) and it looks like oil is pumping out the top and running down the side after it has been running for a few minutes. Any ideas?

no picture, just look at this video at time stamps 0:06 and 0:41, they show the camshaft, and the rod with the ball, that's supposed to line up, with the openings, in the sump.

They look remarkably similar to a Briggs & Stratton engine & I've heard that they are basically the same online,I wonder if their parts are interchangeable ? The thing is that the Tecumseh company started up 22 years after the Briggs & Stratton company. I've had trouble getting employment when I've basically with or for that person whose either a Briggs or a Stratton who does contract work for Komatsu !!!! So,I've worked with a Steve Stratton & for a Barry Briggs (Roberts) who has Briggs & Stratton powered air compressors which are kept well maintained. I have a Briggs & Stratton mower which is 29 years old & it only needs a new throttle cable & recoil pull start gear. I'm hoping they aren't thinking that I'm the sort of person who has to throw that one out,go into town & buy a brand new $139 AUD mower from Aldi !!!! Yeah and I have to find out why I need to marry another one of theirs whose 22 years younger than me whose likely another Roberts. I'm pretty sure she is my cousins late friends half sister,he died of leukemia in 2004 I think,we went to a local go karting place for my cousins 18 birthday in 1998,she would've just been born when he turned that age. They were all Briggs & Stratton powered so I have to find out if that's them. Who knows ! I could find out that I'm a Briggs through my grandmothers side (Myers) & it's as if I haven't been liked to her whose anyone Else !!!!
They appear similar but i have tried to marry a B&S carb to a Tecumseh engine but the bolt pattern was not the same and there were problems adapting the governor linkage also.

It's really not worth saving. Just save it for a season for parts just in case you should run into another free mower like it.

I make my own sump gaskets out of cardboard from a cereal box . I have one I did about 10 years ago and it is still fine. No leaks.

no, you need to replace it.

some are welded, while others are press into a key. It's up to you, but buying a one is recommended.
Would help if you showed how to line up the camshaft rod and told us what size sockets the case chassis bolts are
good idea, and figuring out what tools to use I'll up to you.
What is the gasket part number for the Toro brand? Same one in your video,
sorry but I don't have the part number. Try going to ereplacements dot com and put the model number in and you should get a part number.

nope I probably should have though, It wasn't leaking so I didn't want to go overboard. If you want to, go for it.
You already pulled it all apart, by all means replace that crank seal, you only talking a few extra bucks and minutes.
Do you have to take the engine off or can you access the area by leaving it intact and taking off the top portions to replace the gasket?

yes there could be a leak at the emission breather that sits on top of the engine, or the top oil seal on the crankshaft

Spray alittle lube on your shaft and get out your rubber mallet and after a couple whacks, you there!

no, the one you have has a different engine, so It's close but not the same process.

No I do not have an oil leak coming from the bottom. It that's the case you need to replace the crankshaft seal.

You might have jammed the camshaft against the pan. Did the pan sit flat against the block before you started tightening bolts?

Did it permanently fix the leak. I have the exact same problem.
yes it fixed it for me. There is also a gasket that you can purchase that does the same thing I happened to have some gasket maker.

@@sjgoff yes this engine uses an oil pump to lubricate the top part of the shaft. There's an oil seal there. Try replacing it. Its under the flywheel.

You mean the sump? It wasn't easy. The shaft had some corrosion on it that I have to fight against.

No matter what I do, I just can't get the lid to close. Comes within a 1/2 inch of closing and just stops.
Which "Lid" are you talking about?

Actually Tecumseh is Older than Briggs, Tecumseh Small Engines stuff they acquired from LAUSON in 1956. LAUSON dates back to 1895.
