5:13 This is great. Fat shark is one of the few developers that understand the supreme importance of audio design in games. The imperial characters in Warhammer thrive on religious fanatism that lets them hold their ground against overwhelming odds. The soundtrack really gets you in that feeling in a game that rewards aggression and holding your ground.
Not just the soundtrack, but the entire sound design is phenomenal, from reloading your bolter, to gunshots echoing through empty hive districts, to footsteps of humans vs ogryns vs armored enemies, to the enemy traitor guards calling out orders to their squads, it's so beautifully immersive

This song pretty accurately reflects the current state of the Imperium lore wise. At this time, the Imperium is a galaxy spanning Human civilization with trillions upon trillions of subjects, all of whom worship the emperor as a God, hence the motifs you mentioned. However, after 10,000 years since the Emperor's mortal wounding at the hands of one of his sons during the Horus Heresy, he has been essentially in a vegetative state only just barely holding on through the sacrifice of millions of people over the years. Ironically, the Emperor was very adamant about not being worshiped, and he even punished one of his sons for it. At this point however, all of the Imperium lives only to work for him and can only stop in death. The Imperium is a shadow of its former self, but it limps forward regardless, a twisted and merciless version of what it could have been.
I mean you're not wrong. But I think the Emperor is such a dictator, such a tyrant, and is so manipulative, that there was never a future where the Imperium became a force for good. The Imperial Truth was a huge lie from the start, the Imperium was formed at the hands of emotionless killing machines, and the Emperor never cared for anyone. He was a powerful psyker (possibly a Man of Gold AI from the Dark Age of Tech) who sought to use the power of humanity to kill the gods of Chaos, and did not care that the misery and pain he caused would only empower them. Is it worse now then it was under him? Yes. Because humans took all that power he gathered and then split it up among hundreds and thousands of selfish evil humans to do with whatever they sought fit for 10,000. But the Emperor possibly lived through the Human Federation, he saw what a "good" society did to humanity. He chose militarism, death of choice, and a total lack of humanity in his empire. The Imperium was always doomed.

If he would be able to do this, he would easily vanquish his enemies and fix the imperium. Warhammer 40k is my fav fictional universe and Darktide is a real love letter to the fans tbh. It's a really unique and rich mix of religion, science and fantasy. The idea of such a horrific, monolithic entity like the Emperor and the Imperium being a necessity in the face of even worse terrors makes for a fascinating setting
That's the root of appeal, I think. It's a tragedy that all the horrors that is the Imperium of Man is not a misguided effort, but one of absolute necessity. Not a satire of authoritarianism and the worst aspects of human nature, but a surrendering to the notion that it is absolutely necessary to avoid extinction. And it invites you to delight in the primal urge to 'destroy the other' ingrained in humans in exchange for bearing that horrible realization.

Darktide's "disposal unit imperium remix" and Mechanicus's "Overlord" and "children of Omnisaiah", and lastly, total war warhammer's "mannfred Von Carstain" and "grimgor ironhide" osts are the best the warhammer games have to offer. They're all absolutely glorious!

My favorite part about this song is how it turns almost hypnotic. It absorbs you in it's drums and beat and singing and organ and you really feel yourself being absorbed into this glorious 'Final crusade'. If the Ecclesiarchy is playing stuff like this before sending people off to their deaths then I completely understand why so many go willingly.
This explains why whenever the music kicks up in the middle of a game I've caught myself and been caught by teammates just rushing head and chainsword first into enemy hordes. There is something almost hypnotic in it's effect.
Speaking about Ecclesiarchy.. i think we can safely assume, that choirs that we can hear around 8:16 for example, are Sisters Of Battle. At least for me it sounds like that. It SHOULD sound like that. Overall most of this OST hits just perfectly in my imaginations about how WH40k world sounds like. Jesper Kyd is insanely good and versatile composer.
What I really like about Darktide's ost is that its not the usual orchestra stuff we see in Warhammer, not to say that stuff doesn't fit any of the Warhammer settings, but this is both orchestra and techno and its fucking glorious. One of the best osts I've heard.
Yeah the electronic blending with the classical associated with faith and the industrial sounds of klaxons and heavy machinery give it a very brutal yet futuristic vibe that's super unique.
I think we need to thank Mechanicus for this, the game I think has really trailblazed the way to create a "Imperium" style that is an achronistic mix of techno, a'capella, and classical. Its crazy how we get to see a "grimdark Imperium" music style being formed real time. Makes me really look forward to when a good sororitas game gets created, because I can't wait to see how they'd build on this budding style
The mixture of sounds is exactly what Warhammer has needed in its music. While I do think Dawn of War and Space Marine's OSTs are in good quality, I also think they don't truly capture the true depth that the lore deserves.
I think it's interesting how, in a lore context, the immortal Imperium not only refers to that eternal power and "godliness," but also the eternal suffering, industry, and bloodshed that humanity lives under that has, by the year 40,000, existed for 10,000 years. The Imperium is immortal, but at the same time destined to die.
"destined to die" Uhh yeah idk about that bud, considering what's happening with the imperium now, they changed a lot of stuff, considering Guilliman started taking action against the high Lords and the emperor messing up Nurgles garden while giving the rest of the chaos gods death threats, pretty much indicates the Imperium is making a comeback now. Cause before they were highly defensive, but now they're just beginning to swing their Punch with some brass knuckles with it.

I think you're right, except that rather than that the imperium is "destined to die", it represents how despite the eternal suffering, the imperium CANNOT die, like it’s too big to fail, which is awesome in the biblical sense, it fills you with reverence but also dread because just as the imperium will never fall to outside threats, it will never bow to inside pressure, it will never get any better.
Warhammer. Convoluted and bloated in its lore but its aesthetics are ON POINT. Religious fanaticism mixed with super sciences, psychic horrors and World War era iconography. It is bonkers but dang if it doesn't make you want to drive an tank that is also a pipe organ across a battlefield, shooting rockets at space orcs, space elves and your own troops while singing in Latin.
What is amazing here is that the composer did such an amazing job with this that even though you knew nothin about 40k, you nailed, absolutely, every aspect of the Imperium. Props to you but HUGE props to the composer. I got literal shivers.
Ngl I kinda got the impression he was trying to get away just a little bit from the religious tinge of the track to make the Imperium more secular like modern governments. That's the opposite of what the Imperium is like lmao
The song, Immortal Imperium, is effectively the entire premise of the Imperium somehow distilled down into the themes of a song... it truly blew me away when I first heard it. I described it to my friends as it FEELS like a dilapidated and decaying techno-theocracy somehow encapsulated in a single song.
I am so happy you are so impressed by this soundtrack and are interested in the lore, I adore this franchise, and am always excited when someone else gets into it. the Imperium this song's title refers to is the Imperium of Man, the massive human empire of over a million worlds that has stood for over 10,000 years. At its head is the God Emperor, worshipped by every human under the Imperium's banner, so definitely highly religious. He has very little to actually do with the running of the Imperium, as he is currently a barely living giant skeleton on the Golden Throne, being fed the souls of two thousand psykers every day in order to stay alive and keep space travel possible. in Darktide, you play as prisoners who have been drafted into the service of the Inquisition. Inquisitors are agents of the Imperium with nearly absolute authority, focused on eliminating specific and insidious threats to the Imperium's survival. You fight in the Hive City of Tertium. Hive Cities are massive population and industrial centers with billions to trillions of people, and are not uncommon in the Imperium. The enemies you fight in Darktide are Heretics who have betrayed the Imperium, they are cultists who worship the Chaos Gods. Specifcally, the ones in Darktide worship Nurgle, the Chaos God of plague, disease, rot, and stagnation. There are four Chaos Gods in total. Just think, all these problems in the game and there are three other forces of equal or even greater evil. You don't face even close to the worst Nurgle has to offer in the lore, the Death Guard and Daemons. There are many other factions as well, such as the many alien armies, that are even more dangerous. All considered, Tertium isn't a major or important Hive World in the Imperium, so that's why you aren't seeing any of the bigger, more iconic fighters of Warhammer 40k, such as Space Marines. This game only covers a very small portion of the 40k universe, and still has so much going on in it. That's what I love about 40k, it's so VAST. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

It has immaculate aesthetic with everything, not only music. And like other ppl said... Bricky's videos are great gateway into that world. I was simple heretic but now i love WH40k (WHFB too, but much less). Still dont care about figurines and tabletops tbh... they are very pretty to watch (especially profesionally painted) and thats all for me. But lore, world, aesthetics and stories told in this cruel world become one of my favorites. And it started because some guy dont show me his legs.
The sort of feeling I got from the ending of the song fading slowly with just the alarm noise is an idea of stress. That although the current threat may be defeated there is always more to come so the alarm is never truly finished.
Been real neat seeing Jesper's rise from Freedom Fighters to the insane stuff he's doing now. Dude's up there with Frank Klepacki and it's wonderful seeing him get recognition from music nerds.
The Organ could be playing into that, or there might just be Sisters of Battle nearby calling for artillery support from their Church Organ Multiple Rocket Launcher.
What I especially love about darktide's Ost is that it simultaneously depicts the setting's (or rather the imperium's) power, glory, faith and sanctity, while also strongly hinting at it's ugly underbelly: decrepit, cruel, dysfunctional, crumbling and grimy, fueled and kept alive by nothing but blind dogma and hatred. It's the duality of the Imperium of Man, and the reason I love it so.
@@thecrabmaestro564 I guess it’s just a me thing but I have escape and panic engraved into my mind. Every time it plays I’m reminded of every moment where I had to slaughter swaths of enemy hordes in order to reach the end of the level. But the darktide soundtrack is by far my favorite.

Darktide's music is certainly much more melodic, which is why you remember the individual tunes more. Vermintide's soundtrack is more about communicating the frantic chaos of a skaven swarm or a norscan horde. I also think the music is less melodic because Vermintide has a much darker story - although Warhammer Fantasy is less grimdark than 40K in general, in Darktide you are a reject rising through the ranks and the music has an epic, almost uplifting feel to it as a result. However, in Vermintide you are a band of heroes hopelessly fighting a losing battle to stave off the end of the world, an end that we already know will definitely 100% canonically happen.
Such a cool song for setting the scene. A religious strength, feeling strong and militaristic, and then transitioning into an oppressive techno track sounding like an alarm. And then layering with the religious military tone as a feeling of standing against this enemy and darkness. And then fading away into solely the alarm blaring as the other music fades, leaving a feeling of going down fighting. At least that's how I see it
Another recent game soundtrack I deeply recommend is Signalis. Die Toteninsel and The Promise cannot fail to make me cry. This is contrasted by the heavy industrial sounds of tracks like Pneumatic and Cigarette Wife. The music excellently performs its role as an emotional force in a game that is equal parts cosmic horror and romantic tragedy.
This song is fantastic, really does a good just capturing the feel of the setting, also would highly recommend checking out Luetin09's videos if you want to learn more about the lore of Warhammer 40k.
I wholeheartedly agree- Luetin09 is one of the top 3 Warhammer 40K lore channels (in my opinion, at least). The other two are Oculus Imperia and the 3rd slot is a revolving door of various creators at various times, such as Baldermort or The Amber King. Luetin’s is an exhaustive research into the lore and he presents it as a documentary, whereas Oculus presents it from the point of view of an in-universe Imperial historian, and tells it more like a story, with emotion and “flowery” prose. I couldn’t say who my favorite is, so they both share top billing, as it largely depends on my mood at the time. Unfortunately, there are a lot of channels who just read the Wiki’s entries verbatim, with mispronunciations and a lack of understanding of the lore. That said, you really can’t go wrong with Luetin or Oculus.
Vermintides soundtrack is also incredibly underrated it’s by the same person but the tone that’s used fits so well with the violin is pretty iconic to the skaven now and I can’t think of anything that fits so well.
Glad this plus the Mechanicus are drawing you into Warhammer 40K's music. These two soundtracks are definitely my favorite, but Dawn of War III OST has some good stuff too. Welcome, you serve the Emperor now.
@Yoonki I like the tracks (in no order): 1) Imperial Starfort: First Movement, 2) Death Comes for All, 3) Cage: Second Movement, 4) Acheron: Second Movement, and 5) Macha. They’re all pretty atmospheric.
Other music from Jesper Kyd thats really good is the unreleased OST, "Last Hero standing" from Vermintide 2, which plays whenever youre the last one alive, and i think a commentor put it perfectly: "Ah yes, the 'mercenary running on 40 temp health and 8 liters of adrenaline' theme. Good times" It fits perfectly with the feeling of being overwhelmed by the horde, but still fighting back and maybe even clutching the match. It is the music that has probably created some of my favorite memories in any game, and it wouldnt be the same without the music the song and the gameplay just fuel into eachother so well imo Also, if youre planning on playing through Vermintide 2, i would really recommend playing the first game, well, first for the story and character building, as it makes vermintide 2 even better. its not 100% requiered to nderstand whats going on, but it is definitively worth it

Disposal unit(imperium mix) is the song i listen to when i need to get locked in at the gym. I just turn it on at max volume stare at the wall and think about violence. Works every time.

Darktide is, to me, a perfect depiction of the 40k Universe. Grim, Dark and unspeakably brutal. the soundtrack for this game encapsulates that perfectly. The fact that you could interpret the themes and values of the Imperium just from the music speaks volumes on how phenomenal the Darktide soundtrack is.
Oh man, I'm coming back to this video after having a blast with the new big class update and it feels good. Regardless of that, a new insight I have for this song that feels fascinating is that, despite the song being its own breed of "badass", it feels has a very unique feeling of being both impersonal but incredibly personal at the same time. It feels like its meant for anyone and everyone. A personal call to raise and become apart of something greater, and then with fervor in their hearts strive against the darkness. In essence, it askes of you to become part of this choir. To inspire you not just to raise to occasion, but to raise others along with you. It is firmly a song that radiates the feelings of "Raise - and we are Immortal". To this date I've yet to hear any other song come close to this feeling. A lot get the inspiring down amazingly well, but somehow make it far more personal. Anthems and the likes were you have the feeling that " 'I' am doing good for 'my' country/cause." Immortal Imperium however genuinely feels like a 'We', and I wish I knew where this difference in feeling comes from. I love stuff like this.
I love 40k because it is at its core a parody. It mocks the powerful and the superstitious. Its lore is near bottomless and its style is unmatched. It knows exactly what it is and its so incredibly confident in that. And on top of it all, its commentary is deep and profound. Its irony unmatched in scale but said in a sort of backwards way
Man, i hope you'll tackle a darkest dungeon song for one time, Stuart Chadwood is a great composer and his work really makes the game what it is. I would recommend my favorite DLC track, "The Blasted Hearth" or from the main game, "Town in Chaos", which is a grand remix of the normal town theme that plays when it gets raided... I also really like the camping theme "A Brief Respite."
Great reaction! If you want to get into more 40K stuff then Bricky has a very good video which is a great introduction into 40K called Every Single Warhammer 40K Faction Explained. Would make a great reaction as well even though it might not be your usual type of reaction content.
If you're interested about the warhammer lore, I suggest you check out a podcast called "adeptus ridiculous" on youtube. It's 2 creators, one who did all his homework and another that is a Warhammer newbie, and it's them discussing warhammer and learning about just how ridiculous it is. It's very funny too.
I love 7:50 soooo much. The drums are you fighting, your heart pounding as you struggle for your life and the alarm rings, giving you the feeling of that industrial behemoth - the hive city that you're in - as well as the feeling that the worst is about to come. At your worst, when all hell breaks loose you are beset and the organ elevates the tension to it's peak. Then finally, the sopranos hit and they are the divine grace of the god-emperor finally touching you in your darkest hour. As you fight these literally deamons from hell you are no longer a nobody pointlessly struggling for their life. Now you are elevated by the will of god made manisfest, you are now an angel of wrath sent to destroy these monsters.

Gotta love Jesper Kyd, I'm still in awe they managed to get such a magnificent artist to create the soundtrack for Darktide, not only do we get a mix of almost Bloodborne style gothic music mixed in with Doom style music, its perfect for 40k

Been into 40K since like 15 years ago, totally enticed by the fact that there is no good or villainous faction, only conflicts for survival between each of them, who are all futuristically OP. Here, since the Imperium is a religious totalitarianism built on xenophobia, it is full of faithful humans trained to slaughter heretics, aliens and mutants without pity. And it totally fits the vibes from this OST.

@@slimearbo4596 Every faction as a whole does evil deeds, either because they have to, because they have been led to follow an evil philosophy, or because it is simply in their nature to do evil things. However, 90% of individual people in the setting - at least those from species capable of rational thought - always do what they think is best and avoid what they perceive to be as evil, as is the case in real life.

As someone that have played darktide beta since it started, the music in this game is amazing. Whenever it starts in a mission, you know shit is going down. It gives me the chills everytime.
If you want some pure 40k goodness, check out the short Horus Heresy video out by games workshop. Not a video recommendation, just something to watch while you sip your morning coffee. If you are taking 40k song recommendations, check out some of the music from Dawn of War 2. Too many good songs to suggest them all but Khaine's Wrath is some great Eldar music.

The way you ended, with "the conflict is over and we're stuck with the ashes" describes the Horus Heresy so well and the imperium of the 41st millennium is the ruins of that conflict and the emperor's dream for humanity.

Watching you go through Gehrman's theme gave me the feeling of vicariously experiencing it all for the first time again. This is my favourite track on Darktides OST - I love the mixing of both Imperial majesty and grandeur, alongside the harsh anvil sounds and the almost sinister synths. It's a track that does such a good job blending the heroism of humanity alongside the hopelessness and melancholy of the setting. Jasper Kyd is an absolute champion, the man does not miss.
I just get this, "Fight the endless fight" vibes. Like, you will not live to see victory, but we are stronger than the endlessness. If only by an atom, but one endless day in the unseeable future mankind will have won against existence. Then the organs come in, promising that there is greater complexity than the eternal meat-grinder. Maybe a side no one has seen before, but the original intense music just keeps going. Just smashing against this new idea. Its a scream against the logical, "you claim intelligence, but no one outsmarts the terrible vastness of our reality's arrogance. Trust in the war, you have no idea how doomed we are"
I also absolutely love what Jesper Kyd did with Light Of The Imperium, that break-core chorus absolutely blasted my mind when I first got into the Nurgle laboratory.

YESSSSS Darktide OST already getting attention! It slaps so hard! You’re awesome for picking this up, want to try listening to Imperial Advance and disposal unit? It’s popping
If you're willing to get to know the lore, I would highly recommend watching first, both Arbitor Ian and Weshammer's respective "40k timeline" videos, then Bricky's "every single 40k faction" part 1 and 2. At this point you should have a pretty good overview of the setting. After that, I would recommend putting Majorkill and Weshammer's videos on shuffle and explore different dynamics/characters/factions/themes one bite at a time, these two make it very entertaining and easy to watch. If you're still interested, then there are over 500 official novels to read, more in depth channels like Janovich, some official (Angels Of Death, the Horus Heresy trailer) and mind-blowing fan animations (Astartes, Death of Hope, The Lord Inquisitor, ...). And lastly, the countless parodies and memes on channels like Chaotic Voices, Barry Walts, and Bruva Alfabusa who made the glorious "If the Emperor had a Text-To-Speech Device" simply known as TTS. Would also recommend playing the 2011 "Space Marine" game and the upcoming sequel for the best immersion in the setting, along with Darktide. Hope whoever reads this as a newcomer will enjoy their exploration of this fascinating universe!
As some people have been saying, Disposal Unit (the bossfight theme) is also really good. Another personal favorite of mine is Imperial Advance, which is surprisingly epic for playing when you wait for an elevator.
The thing I got from it, especially the drums, is that it is heavily militaristic. Those sorts of heavy, sharp percussive rhythms are usually associated with something like a war march. When you combine that with the organ which is definitely distorted to sound more artificial, and the chanting, you get a feeling of both powerful religious significance and intense militaristic might, which I think perfectly describes the Imperium. The electronic sounding klaxon sounds you are also right on point about, it adds a feeling of urgency and action to the soundscape.
That's amazing what You can read just from music. I know that there is so many emotions put into music but still reading it like book is amazing skill.
I'm impressed with how much you can exactly describe the imperium without having any prior knowledge. Just from your musical experience and knowledge is crazy.
warhammer offers some of the more unique music out there, total war warhammer(which is from warhammer fantasy and not 40k) has ratmen throat singing, mechanicus has techno church music with organs and so on. the darktide youtube channel released some of these songs before the game release and linked the composer in them and they're pretty great.
Dear Marco if you want to know more about the warhammer universe in a (somewhat) quick fashion. The youtuber brickey has a two part series going into everysingle faction in the universe. I'd highly recomend it if you're intrested.

5:13 This is great. Fat shark is one of the few developers that understand the supreme importance of audio design in games. The imperial characters in Warhammer thrive on religious fanatism that lets them hold their ground against overwhelming odds. The soundtrack really gets you in that feeling in a game that rewards aggression and holding your ground.
Not just the soundtrack, but the entire sound design is phenomenal, from reloading your bolter, to gunshots echoing through empty hive districts, to footsteps of humans vs ogryns vs armored enemies, to the enemy traitor guards calling out orders to their squads, it's so beautifully immersive

This song pretty accurately reflects the current state of the Imperium lore wise. At this time, the Imperium is a galaxy spanning Human civilization with trillions upon trillions of subjects, all of whom worship the emperor as a God, hence the motifs you mentioned. However, after 10,000 years since the Emperor's mortal wounding at the hands of one of his sons during the Horus Heresy, he has been essentially in a vegetative state only just barely holding on through the sacrifice of millions of people over the years. Ironically, the Emperor was very adamant about not being worshiped, and he even punished one of his sons for it. At this point however, all of the Imperium lives only to work for him and can only stop in death. The Imperium is a shadow of its former self, but it limps forward regardless, a twisted and merciless version of what it could have been.

I mean you're not wrong. But I think the Emperor is such a dictator, such a tyrant, and is so manipulative, that there was never a future where the Imperium became a force for good. The Imperial Truth was a huge lie from the start, the Imperium was formed at the hands of emotionless killing machines, and the Emperor never cared for anyone. He was a powerful psyker (possibly a Man of Gold AI from the Dark Age of Tech) who sought to use the power of humanity to kill the gods of Chaos, and did not care that the misery and pain he caused would only empower them.
Is it worse now then it was under him? Yes. Because humans took all that power he gathered and then split it up among hundreds and thousands of selfish evil humans to do with whatever they sought fit for 10,000. But the Emperor possibly lived through the Human Federation, he saw what a "good" society did to humanity. He chose militarism, death of choice, and a total lack of humanity in his empire.
The Imperium was always doomed.

Warhammer 40k is my fav fictional universe and Darktide is a real love letter to the fans tbh. It's a really unique and rich mix of religion, science and fantasy. The idea of such a horrific, monolithic entity like the Emperor and the Imperium being a necessity in the face of even worse terrors makes for a fascinating setting

That's the root of appeal, I think. It's a tragedy that all the horrors that is the Imperium of Man is not a misguided effort, but one of absolute necessity. Not a satire of authoritarianism and the worst aspects of human nature, but a surrendering to the notion that it is absolutely necessary to avoid extinction. And it invites you to delight in the primal urge to 'destroy the other' ingrained in humans in exchange for bearing that horrible realization.

My favorite part about this song is how it turns almost hypnotic. It absorbs you in it's drums and beat and singing and organ and you really feel yourself being absorbed into this glorious 'Final crusade'. If the Ecclesiarchy is playing stuff like this before sending people off to their deaths then I completely understand why so many go willingly.
This explains why whenever the music kicks up in the middle of a game I've caught myself and been caught by teammates just rushing head and chainsword first into enemy hordes. There is something almost hypnotic in it's effect.
Speaking about Ecclesiarchy.. i think we can safely assume, that choirs that we can hear around 8:16 for example, are Sisters Of Battle. At least for me it sounds like that. It SHOULD sound like that. Overall most of this OST hits just perfectly in my imaginations about how WH40k world sounds like. Jesper Kyd is insanely good and versatile composer.
What I really like about Darktide's ost is that its not the usual orchestra stuff we see in Warhammer, not to say that stuff doesn't fit any of the Warhammer settings, but this is both orchestra and techno and its fucking glorious. One of the best osts I've heard.
Yeah the electronic blending with the classical associated with faith and the industrial sounds of klaxons and heavy machinery give it a very brutal yet futuristic vibe that's super unique.

I think we need to thank Mechanicus for this, the game I think has really trailblazed the way to create a "Imperium" style that is an achronistic mix of techno, a'capella, and classical. Its crazy how we get to see a "grimdark Imperium" music style being formed real time.
Makes me really look forward to when a good sororitas game gets created, because I can't wait to see how they'd build on this budding style
The mixture of sounds is exactly what Warhammer has needed in its music.
While I do think Dawn of War and Space Marine's OSTs are in good quality, I also think they don't truly capture the true depth that the lore deserves.
It's absolutely stuff I can imagine them blasting in universe.
I think it's interesting how, in a lore context, the immortal Imperium not only refers to that eternal power and "godliness," but also the eternal suffering, industry, and bloodshed that humanity lives under that has, by the year 40,000, existed for 10,000 years. The Imperium is immortal, but at the same time destined to die.

I think you're right, except that rather than that the imperium is "destined to die", it represents how despite the eternal suffering, the imperium CANNOT die, like it’s too big to fail, which is awesome in the biblical sense, it fills you with reverence but also dread because just as the imperium will never fall to outside threats, it will never bow to inside pressure, it will never get any better.
Warhammer. Convoluted and bloated in its lore but its aesthetics are ON POINT. Religious fanaticism mixed with super sciences, psychic horrors and World War era iconography. It is bonkers but dang if it doesn't make you want to drive an tank that is also a pipe organ across a battlefield, shooting rockets at space orcs, space elves and your own troops while singing in Latin.

The song, Immortal Imperium, is effectively the entire premise of the Imperium somehow distilled down into the themes of a song... it truly blew me away when I first heard it. I described it to my friends as it FEELS like a dilapidated and decaying techno-theocracy somehow encapsulated in a single song.

Once you start learning anything about the Imperium, you'll find that "visceral" is very accurate indeed.
I am so happy you are so impressed by this soundtrack and are interested in the lore, I adore this franchise, and am always excited when someone else gets into it.
the Imperium this song's title refers to is the Imperium of Man, the massive human empire of over a million worlds that has stood for over 10,000 years. At its head is the God Emperor, worshipped by every human under the Imperium's banner, so definitely highly religious. He has very little to actually do with the running of the Imperium, as he is currently a barely living giant skeleton on the Golden Throne, being fed the souls of two thousand psykers every day in order to stay alive and keep space travel possible.
in Darktide, you play as prisoners who have been drafted into the service of the Inquisition. Inquisitors are agents of the Imperium with nearly absolute authority, focused on eliminating specific and insidious threats to the Imperium's survival. You fight in the Hive City of Tertium. Hive Cities are massive population and industrial centers with billions to trillions of people, and are not uncommon in the Imperium.
The enemies you fight in Darktide are Heretics who have betrayed the Imperium, they are cultists who worship the Chaos Gods. Specifcally, the ones in Darktide worship Nurgle, the Chaos God of plague, disease, rot, and stagnation. There are four Chaos Gods in total. Just think, all these problems in the game and there are three other forces of equal or even greater evil. You don't face even close to the worst Nurgle has to offer in the lore, the Death Guard and Daemons. There are many other factions as well, such as the many alien armies, that are even more dangerous.
All considered, Tertium isn't a major or important Hive World in the Imperium, so that's why you aren't seeing any of the bigger, more iconic fighters of Warhammer 40k, such as Space Marines. This game only covers a very small portion of the 40k universe, and still has so much going on in it. That's what I love about 40k, it's so VAST.

It has immaculate aesthetic with everything, not only music. And like other ppl said... Bricky's videos are great gateway into that world. I was simple heretic but now i love WH40k (WHFB too, but much less). Still dont care about figurines and tabletops tbh... they are very pretty to watch (especially profesionally painted) and thats all for me. But lore, world, aesthetics and stories told in this cruel world become one of my favorites. And it started because some guy dont show me his legs.

The Organ could be playing into that, or there might just be Sisters of Battle nearby calling for artillery support from their Church Organ Multiple Rocket Launcher.
What I especially love about darktide's Ost is that it simultaneously depicts the setting's (or rather the imperium's) power, glory, faith and sanctity, while also strongly hinting at it's ugly underbelly: decrepit, cruel, dysfunctional, crumbling and grimy, fueled and kept alive by nothing but blind dogma and hatred.
It's the duality of the Imperium of Man, and the reason I love it so.
Man, when you're playing the game and that organ comes on when you're shoulder deep in heretics, you kinda actually feel invincible.
Darktide has surprisingly godly music, Vermintide one was more like ambient that you forget.
Ngl I can't remember verm 2s music either. Nowhere near as memorable as darktide. Not saying verm 2 wasn't good, not at all it was brilliant.

Darktide's music is certainly much more melodic, which is why you remember the individual tunes more. Vermintide's soundtrack is more about communicating the frantic chaos of a skaven swarm or a norscan horde. I also think the music is less melodic because Vermintide has a much darker story - although Warhammer Fantasy is less grimdark than 40K in general, in Darktide you are a reject rising through the ranks and the music has an epic, almost uplifting feel to it as a result. However, in Vermintide you are a band of heroes hopelessly fighting a losing battle to stave off the end of the world, an end that we already know will definitely 100% canonically happen.
Such a cool song for setting the scene. A religious strength, feeling strong and militaristic, and then transitioning into an oppressive techno track sounding like an alarm. And then layering with the religious military tone as a feeling of standing against this enemy and darkness. And then fading away into solely the alarm blaring as the other music fades, leaving a feeling of going down fighting. At least that's how I see it
Another recent game soundtrack I deeply recommend is Signalis. Die Toteninsel and The Promise cannot fail to make me cry. This is contrasted by the heavy industrial sounds of tracks like Pneumatic and Cigarette Wife. The music excellently performs its role as an emotional force in a game that is equal parts cosmic horror and romantic tragedy.
The disposal unit is the boss theme of this game which might work well considering how hot to trot this game is.
This song is fantastic, really does a good just capturing the feel of the setting, also would highly recommend checking out Luetin09's videos if you want to learn more about the lore of Warhammer 40k.
I wholeheartedly agree- Luetin09 is one of the top 3 Warhammer 40K lore channels (in my opinion, at least). The other two are Oculus Imperia and the 3rd slot is a revolving door of various creators at various times, such as Baldermort or The Amber King. Luetin’s is an exhaustive research into the lore and he presents it as a documentary, whereas Oculus presents it from the point of view of an in-universe Imperial historian, and tells it more like a story, with emotion and “flowery” prose. I couldn’t say who my favorite is, so they both share top billing, as it largely depends on my mood at the time. Unfortunately, there are a lot of channels who just read the Wiki’s entries verbatim, with mispronunciations and a lack of understanding of the lore. That said, you really can’t go wrong with Luetin or Oculus.
Vermintides soundtrack is also incredibly underrated it’s by the same person but the tone that’s used fits so well with the violin is pretty iconic to the skaven now and I can’t think of anything that fits so well.

Other music from Jesper Kyd thats really good is the unreleased OST, "Last Hero standing" from Vermintide 2, which plays whenever youre the last one alive, and i think a commentor put it perfectly: "Ah yes, the 'mercenary running on 40 temp health and 8 liters of adrenaline' theme. Good times"
It fits perfectly with the feeling of being overwhelmed by the horde, but still fighting back and maybe even clutching the match. It is the music that has probably created some of my favorite memories in any game, and it wouldnt be the same without the music

Also, if youre planning on playing through Vermintide 2, i would really recommend playing the first game, well, first for the story and character building, as it makes vermintide 2 even better.

The best of his work is in hitman contracts, blood money and freedom fighters.

Darktide is, to me, a perfect depiction of the 40k Universe. Grim, Dark and unspeakably brutal. the soundtrack for this game encapsulates that perfectly.
The fact that you could interpret the themes and values of the Imperium just from the music speaks volumes on how phenomenal the Darktide soundtrack is.
Oh man, I'm coming back to this video after having a blast with the new big class update and it feels good.
Regardless of that, a new insight I have for this song that feels fascinating is that, despite the song being its own breed of "badass", it feels has a very unique feeling of being both impersonal but incredibly personal at the same time. It feels like its meant for anyone and everyone. A personal call to raise and become apart of something greater, and then with fervor in their hearts strive against the darkness. In essence, it askes of you to become part of this choir. To inspire you not just to raise to occasion, but to raise others along with you. It is firmly a song that radiates the feelings of "Raise - and we are Immortal".
To this date I've yet to hear any other song come close to this feeling. A lot get the inspiring down amazingly well, but somehow make it far more personal. Anthems and the likes were you have the feeling that " 'I' am doing good for 'my' country/cause." Immortal Imperium however genuinely feels like a 'We', and I wish I knew where this difference in feeling comes from. I love stuff like this.
I love 40k because it is at its core a parody. It mocks the powerful and the superstitious. Its lore is near bottomless and its style is unmatched. It knows exactly what it is and its so incredibly confident in that. And on top of it all, its commentary is deep and profound. Its irony unmatched in scale but said in a sort of backwards way
Man, i hope you'll tackle a darkest dungeon song for one time, Stuart Chadwood is a great composer and his work really makes the game what it is. I would recommend my favorite DLC track, "The Blasted Hearth" or from the main game, "Town in Chaos", which is a grand remix of the normal town theme that plays when it gets raided... I also really like the camping theme "A Brief Respite."

If you're interested about the warhammer lore, I suggest you check out a podcast called "adeptus ridiculous" on youtube. It's 2 creators, one who did all his homework and another that is a Warhammer newbie, and it's them discussing warhammer and learning about just how ridiculous it is. It's very funny too.

That "awakening" feeling is likely just a hold over from the main theme of the two games that came before it. Vermintide 1 & 2.

The drums are you fighting, your heart pounding as you struggle for your life and the alarm rings, giving you the feeling of that industrial behemoth - the hive city that you're in - as well as the feeling that the worst is about to come.
At your worst, when all hell breaks loose you are beset and the organ elevates the tension to it's peak. Then finally, the sopranos hit and they are the divine grace of the god-emperor finally touching you in your darkest hour. As you fight these literally deamons from hell you are no longer a nobody pointlessly struggling for their life. Now you are elevated by the will of god made manisfest, you are now an angel of wrath sent to destroy these monsters.
The fact you nail the tone and so many themes of not only the imperium but the greater 40k universe... *Chefs Kiss*

Gotta love Jesper Kyd, I'm still in awe they managed to get such a magnificent artist to create the soundtrack for Darktide, not only do we get a mix of almost Bloodborne style gothic music mixed in with Doom style music, its perfect for 40k

I’d argue that this is probably the soundtrack that best encapsulates the Imperial Guard in warhammer 40K… whenever I think of the humble guardsman I have this soundtrack playing in my head now…Jesper Kyd never disappoints

Immortal Imperium is a great song, but you haven't heard anything until Disposal Unit (imperium Mix) comes on during those boss fights.

The original Chaos Gate (the 1998 version, not the new one) has possibly my favourite soundtrack. Particularly 'Ultramarines Chant' and 'Word Bearer's March'.

Been into 40K since like 15 years ago, totally enticed by the fact that there is no good or villainous faction, only conflicts for survival between each of them, who are all futuristically OP.
Here, since the Imperium is a religious totalitarianism built on xenophobia, it is full of faithful humans trained to slaughter heretics, aliens and mutants without pity. And it totally fits the vibes from this OST.
If you don't think factions like the Imperium are villainous I have no idea what to tell you.
@@mechanomics2649 On the contrary, there are plenty of good people/factions. Hate the whole "EVERYONE IS EVIL" stigma. People that scream that have never read an actual 40k novel and just watched a lore video online saying it. Kinda weird.

@@slimearbo4596 Every faction as a whole does evil deeds, either because they have to, because they have been led to follow an evil philosophy, or because it is simply in their nature to do evil things. However, 90% of individual people in the setting - at least those from species capable of rational thought - always do what they think is best and avoid what they perceive to be as evil, as is the case in real life.

Lol if you start a warhammer lore react series it would be awesome. The WH40k community on youtube loves rewatching hour long lore videos in react form.
As someone that have played darktide beta since it started, the music in this game is amazing. Whenever it starts in a mission, you know shit is going down. It gives me the chills everytime.
If you want some pure 40k goodness, check out the short Horus Heresy video out by games workshop. Not a video recommendation, just something to watch while you sip your morning coffee. If you are taking 40k song recommendations, check out some of the music from Dawn of War 2. Too many good songs to suggest them all but Khaine's Wrath is some great Eldar music.
Yeah Doyle Donehoo's work on Dawn of War 2 and the Battlefleet Gothic Armada games are some of the more underrated 40k music for sure

This song is insane. It fits the game perfectly and whenever it comes on I get hyped up.
The way you ended, with "the conflict is over and we're stuck with the ashes" describes the Horus Heresy so well and the imperium of the 41st millennium is the ruins of that conflict and the emperor's dream for humanity.
I'm a goon for Lovecraftian media and started watching you on my other account when you first covered Bloodborne. Watching you go through Gehrman's theme gave me the feeling of vicariously experiencing it all for the first time again. This is my favourite track on Darktides OST - I love the mixing of both Imperial majesty and grandeur, alongside the harsh anvil sounds and the almost sinister synths. It's a track that does such a good job blending the heroism of humanity alongside the hopelessness and melancholy of the setting.
Jasper Kyd is an absolute champion, the man does not miss.

I just get this, "Fight the endless fight" vibes. Like, you will not live to see victory, but we are stronger than the endlessness. If only by an atom, but one endless day in the unseeable future mankind will have won against existence.
Then the organs come in, promising that there is greater complexity than the eternal meat-grinder. Maybe a side no one has seen before, but the original intense music just keeps going. Just smashing against this new idea.
Its a scream against the logical, "you claim intelligence, but no one outsmarts the terrible vastness of our reality's arrogance. Trust in the war, you have no idea how doomed we are"
I also absolutely love what Jesper Kyd did with Light Of The Imperium, that break-core chorus absolutely blasted my mind when I first got into the Nurgle laboratory.

If you're willing to get to know the lore, I would highly recommend watching first, both Arbitor Ian and Weshammer's respective "40k timeline" videos, then Bricky's "every single 40k faction" part 1 and 2. At this point you should have a pretty good overview of the setting. After that, I would recommend putting Majorkill and Weshammer's videos on shuffle and explore different dynamics/characters/factions/themes one bite at a time, these two make it very entertaining and easy to watch. If you're still interested, then there are over 500 official novels to read, more in depth channels like Janovich, some official (Angels Of Death, the Horus Heresy trailer) and mind-blowing fan animations (Astartes, Death of Hope, The Lord Inquisitor, ...). And lastly, the countless parodies and memes on channels like Chaotic Voices, Barry Walts, and Bruva Alfabusa who made the glorious "If the Emperor had a Text-To-Speech Device" simply known as TTS. Would also recommend playing the 2011 "Space Marine" game and the upcoming sequel for the best immersion in the setting, along with Darktide. Hope whoever reads this as a newcomer will enjoy their exploration of this fascinating universe!
Man, you’ll need to check out „Imperial Advance” and „Disposal Unit (Imperium mix)” it will blow your mind.
As some people have been saying, Disposal Unit (the bossfight theme) is also really good. Another personal favorite of mine is Imperial Advance, which is surprisingly epic for playing when you wait for an elevator.
The thing I got from it, especially the drums, is that it is heavily militaristic. Those sorts of heavy, sharp percussive rhythms are usually associated with something like a war march. When you combine that with the organ which is definitely distorted to sound more artificial, and the chanting, you get a feeling of both powerful religious significance and intense militaristic might, which I think perfectly describes the Imperium. The electronic sounding klaxon sounds you are also right on point about, it adds a feeling of urgency and action to the soundscape.
That's amazing what You can read just from music. I know that there is so many emotions put into music but still reading it like book is amazing skill.
I'm impressed with how much you can exactly describe the imperium without having any prior knowledge. Just from your musical experience and knowledge is crazy.
It's nice to see how much he's having a blast with this one.
warhammer offers some of the more unique music out there, total war warhammer(which is from warhammer fantasy and not 40k) has ratmen throat singing, mechanicus has techno church music with organs and so on.
the darktide youtube channel released some of these songs before the game release and linked the composer in them and they're pretty great.

you getting into the meaning behind imperium in just a fascinating way made me subscribe, also word of advice it is a 1000 times easier getting into warhammer then getting out. p.s there are some great lore channels on youtube the only one I might advice against if that is what you care about is Arch Warhammer, he has some... questionable politics
