Ludwig’s music is so poetic when compared to his fight. Like someone else in the comments said, you hear about him, but when you meet him you aren’t met with disappointment, but disgust. Like “This is the great hero they talked about? But… Look what he is now?” you’re fighting this horrific monster, and finally when he falls, he gains his humanity by seeing his once lost weapon, and you finally see what the legends were talking about. You see the legendary Ludwig, but not by physical form, but his powerful demanding voice, albeit between winnie’s and neighs, his tall stature standing proud, despite him looking horrifying, and his weapon he holds confidently and elegantly, despite it not quite fitting in with his appearance. You know that this is the Ludwig you were told about. It doesn’t look like him, but you know, from the way he presents himself, that this was the legend, and no matter how far from grace he’s fallen he’s regained his sanity that he was denied for so long that he deserves. The absolutely best part is the gameplay elements, how serrated weapons did more damage as he’s considered a beast enemy, but in his second phase, amidst his newfound composure and respect for his opponent (you) that he once tried to devour, they no longer work. It’s like the game is saying “The monster you once fought was killed by Ludwig, and now you fight not just a man, but a legend.” The second phase music is so good, I’m sure everyone knows how the fight turns into a mad waltz, but I always imagine the more poetic aspect is the hunter in this struggle against this massive creature, fighting with extreme intensity, and as a hunter you see him as a beast, nothing more. He’s another animal to be put down. But like I said before, once he becomes the holy blade, the song turns from struggle to dance, as in the hunter realizes he’s no longer facing the same opponent, and instead of putting down an animal, it’s like both Ludwig and the hunter silently agree with “Let’s finish this properly.” Fromsoftware is so fucking good. Sorry about the huge rant there, I love bloodborne so much.
A creature of wrath and grace, discipline and brutality, slavering madness and righteous furor in equal measure. Such a spectacular character. Integrated flawlessly into the game. What I wouldn’t give to experience the thrill of the hunt for the first time again…
I love Ludwig's fight for this reason, it captures a possibly the most important theme from Berserk so well, that humanity is not a measure of how we are above or different from monsters. Humanity is the act of choosing to struggle against the fate we have been handed. That the simple act of choosing to choose is what makes us human. Ludwig needed to see his sword to give him a boost then he chose. What his body looked like does not matter because at that moment he chose and he became human
Your experience as an opera singer really adds a whole new level of analysis and perspective on these tracks that I've never seen anyone else look into to this extent, excellent analysis as always!
You took the words right out of my mouth, tbh I didn't even know there were vocals on this song because I'm always too busy getting my ass stomped by Ludwig. I'm very glad I found this channel now I have a new playlist to binge watch
This isn't classical music, a lot of people think that any kind of orchestral musical is called "classical", but classical refers to music written in the classical period (approx. 1750-1820, after the baroque period, before the romantic period). Think Hadyn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven (though some argue that he's a romantic composer, I think probably just a mix). This isn't even written in a classical style, it's just instrumental game music. Very, very well composed game music. -----------Essay warning------------ Key features of Bloodborne OSTSs: Orchestral techniques: -Clusters -Aleatoric techniques -Tremolos -Layered dissonant harmony -Rhythmic ostinatos -Soaring melodic lines General characteristics- choir: -Use of large, prominent 32-person SATB choir. -Choir division- from 3-note chords to 8-note dissonant chords -Vocal effects (clusters, slides, murmurs) Unrelentingly dissonant, broad emotional palette, somber, soaring, nightmarish, tormented, often very loud. Classical music was generally very elegant and structured with an emphasis on balanced phrasing, intending to be easy on the ear. Melodies were often fairy short with functional harmony- clear cadence points (though, classical music often changed keys, mood and timbres) and lots of homophonic textures (single melody with chord like/hymn like accompaniment). VERY different to how BB music is written. I don't take music anymore, but I'm fairy sure that even using tritones back in the classical period was a big no-no. They called it the "Devil's Chord" because it was so unpleasant to listen to, I think it might have even been illegal! (someone fact check me on this please). Safe to say, if this had been released during the classical period, everyone would have thought Nobuyoshi an avatar of Satan and have him executed or something haha It was fun flipping through my old GCSE music notebook to write this, hope anyone who read this found this interesting! :)
@@starmochi9692 What would you name this exact type of music? Hearing 'game music' makes me think of rudimentary Mario beep-boops, low pace ambient tunes in Skyrim, Minecraft, background non vocal rock in Dynasty Warriors and other large clusters of nearly random music. What would you call the music of Bloodborne, Shadow of the Colossus, Demon Souls Remake, and Lost Ark's Astalgia of Phantasm? Dissonant Classical? Violent Pseudo Classical? Cinematic Orchestral? Violent Orchestral?
@@starmochi9692 I should’ve said neoclassical that’s my bad. The use of the devils chord and tritones is really cool in a lot of Bloodborne pieces and really does hit that uncanny and unsettling feeling.
Ludwig is mentioned constantly throughout Bloodbornes lore so us finding him in his monstrous state is such an interesting feeling. Then the phase transition hits and he's suddenly this larger then life force to be reckoned with pulling out the freaking Moonlight Greatsword. The track accentuates this perfectly and makes Ludwig one of the most memorable bosses in the SoulsBorne genre.
@@AtelierMcMuttonArt I agree, but I’d like to give a special mention to the transition from Radagon to The Elden Beast from Elden Ring - it’s not nearly as seamless, but the way that the Elden Beast is depicted as it’s emerging, this monstrously large creature, yet as beautiful as it is unknowable, gracefully *swiming* throughout the interior of the Erd Tree…I fully admit to just standing there and watching it as it moved before getting blasted to kingdom come
@@MarcoMeatballYou used the fanmade lyrics, not the correct ones. I contacted music producers who worked in Bloodborne to confirm the actual lyrics used in the song, I even published them. Surely you won't publish another video about this song, but you should warn the lyrics you uttered in this video are not the actual ones sung by the choir.
@@AntoniusTertius great to know there are official lyrics. Where did you find the music producer? I see you already got the correct lyrics on your video - I'd like to confirm the info for myself too, of course.
@@MarcoMeatball I always find the music producers names in the games' credits, then I simply search for ways to contact them on the internet. If you wish to know who gave me the lyrics and the original texts on which they are based, just send me an email. By the way, why didn't you try to confirm those fanmade lyrics? If not confirmed, better not to mention them at all. I will never understand why most people easily accept fanmade lyrics/translations and never question those who make them up. I found that One who craves souls reaction video, then I found this one. Good content ^^ One who craves souls is my favorite Souls ost.
Holy moly! Your the first person I’ve ever seen analyze the Latin lyrics in this song. Amazing to see a normally overlooked factor get it’s time in the spotlight!
I never played Bloodborne, but honestly the lore intrigued me and unless you noticed. The most heartfelt song of this game, Gehrman the first Hunter has latin lyrics that tells the tales of how it was for Gehrman.
@@lillonerboi504 From what ive heard, it is gibberish, in a way. Its definitely latin, however much of the grammar and conjugation is improper. Unfortunately, bloodborne is the only FS game with latin lyrics, except for one song in elden ring.
@@zergray6851 while gibberish, ive seen some put em enough together to get the idea of what they tell.. its gets really close to the point of having to be purposeful but id have to check again (like lawrence and ghermans)
It's just like what internet-famous Maxor said "How the fuck do Japanese composers write better symphonies than the continent that invented them?!" Edit; Ok guys, calm the fuck down. Max0r even showed in his video that he genuinely doesn't believe that video games are better than actual symphonies.
I love how the music did its intended purpose, especially at 9:18. The music at that point is about focus and losing all your humanity in chaos and as we see.. chaos has many different forms. He enjoyed himself to a point of losing himself in a symphony of chaos.... someone would say he looks foolish and silly just like Ludwig.. who was foolish looking. Two thumbs up sir.
I always thought of the cello as his real self that is trapped and deafened in a cacophony of the voices in his head from becoming blood starved while obsessing over his blade. And the moment he finds his sword (the part where the voices start shouting until silence) he finally becomes clear in mind, and becomes himself again... Silencing all the voices and he is now fully focused at the task in front of him; the hunter that he must defeat; forcing all the voices to follow HIS lead; to not be drowned out. Tldr; i always thought the music was a reflection of his state of mind.
This is one of the few bosses where the music truly elevates it from great to incredible, being musical storytelling at its finest. It mirrors the 3/4 to 6/8 descent into madness of Laurence’s theme, with phase 2 becoming a mad waltz. Phase 1 builds up to this perfectly: I CANNOT get enough of the spot where it releases tension with the low note and strings. From an objective standpoint I really would have to put this and Laurence at the top of From’s songs
I don't know why, but when I see Marco listening to phase 2, It puts a smile on my face seeing him just vibing to it, almost like immersing himself into the music to get more insight into it. Or he's just having a good time. Whatever it is I'm happy for you man :)
The moment the phase changes from accursed to holy blade is hands down my favorite moment in BB to go from fighting this horrid rotten beast to this bold, fierce Hunter seated upon his noble steed set to a theme that makes you feel as if you are participating is this moonlit waltz is enough to get me out of my seat and screaming “YES” as I try to line my dodges up perfectly with his hits every. Single. Time.
Ludwig was the first of the Church's Hunters and created his own army of holy warriors. Idk if you remember this from your playthrough, but after you beat him you can talk to his dying head and he asks if his Church Hunters became the honorable warriors he wanted them to be, so you get a choice to lie and let him die in peace...or tell him the truth and he wails in despair as he goes out.
@@McNugge. yeah Gehrman was the first Hunter when they were basically a secret society. When the church could no longer hide the truth of the cursed blood they sanctioned the church hunters like 👆🏻 guy said.
@@apolloisnotashirt You should play it. Then maybe watch all the lore videos to fully grasp what's going on. You'll be blown away. It's worth every cent, after 9 years I still feel the same way about it like when I first played it as a teenager. Played it again and again for 600+ hours. It's art🖤
I remember playing the The Old Hunters DLC the day before Thanksgiving in 2015. My brother came over and we were getting food ready for the next day and playing Bloodborne on two separate consoles, side by side on two different TVs. We stayed up all night exploring it. I got to Ludwig first and when I got to phase 2 the first time (took me a few attempts) I was so blown away by the music I just stood there and he killed me. My brother was like , “Bro, what were you doing?” I responded “Did you hear that music?” He was like, “I wanted to keep listening but you got killed 😫😫” That’s a good memory. Stay up.
"Ah... There you are, my friend..." I love the way you can literally pinpoint the moment he sees his blade and regain his humanity in his music at 7:52 The first time you fight this monstrosity, you don't even pay attention to the music that much. Phase one is just typical. It is low humming in the background from the chorus and the wild lashing of a beast. It is normal. It is safe. You expect this. He is reckless, but you have dealt with reckless beasts, and he is no different. Then the music changes. The cutscene plays. It is such a small scene, but theres this strange feeling of unease as you see the holy glow of his blade reflecting in what little of his human face. Then his eyes glow alight, brighter than the blade itself. And he smiles. Suddenly, the music is *alive*. This beast, no longer hunched and slaving at the mouth, stands on all his legs with a straightened back. This is no beast anymore. This is Ludwig, the Holy Blade. The sweeping brass and chorus adds to the panic as you realize that you arent hunting anymore; you are fighting for your godforsakened life against the strongest and the oldest of the hunters. Ludwig has returned to the hunt one last time. Once you become familiar with the fight, its fascinating in this horrific way that he is literally dancing with you in rhythm to the song. He is having the time of his life in who knows how long. One last honorable waltz of death to reclaim the glory of his olden days. Each strike with his partner is beautiful. It is as intimate as a man and his bride, as close as brother in arms. And it can only bring a question to mind; just how many fell to his waltz before we ended his madness?
Much like you say, after you get this fight down and realize how in sync he moves with the music, we as players begin to do same, learning this beautiful dance that only we who’ve done this fight multiple times can. There are many songs that come close this but this is pure transcendence
I just wanna say, the way Marco behaved when the phase 2 entered is literally me every time with my fav Fromsoft themes. I love to be passionate about the masterpieces they bring us, and some particular songs like this one, Ludwigs theme, just makes me feel alive. I really love Fromsoftware, man
Yes, they make so many incredible boss themes. Hell even the ambient music they make is sometimes incredible such as Leyndell Royal Capital in Elden Ring. Oh and the title screen music is usually really good. Ah screw it they just do good game music in general.
I love how his theme so perfectly portrays the disgust from himself and us by just sounding kinda off with that chorus and strings, while still sounding emposing and massive. In the second phase he shifts into something menacing, the disgust is not important anymore, all that matters is that he is going to kill you and you have to do everything in your power to not die yet it all has that light string sound so honorable
"Ah you were at my side all along. My true mentor. My guiding moonlight!" One of gaming's greatest moments. Every single aspect of this fight is masterful beyond believe, the art direction, the sound design, the music the combat mechanics and the story significance. I wonder if FromSoftware will ever be able to top this.
Once masterpiece is made. Non can even come close to it. Do not expect the consistency of one to be repeated. Expect one of different origins that could reflect such grandure, even if that reflection is distorted.
I love this ost soo much, if you look at the latin lyrics, at first he praises the blood, the holy blood (sanguine sanctum), then there’s a 20 second pause where just music plays which symbolizes the passing of time, time in which people used and abused the holy blood. After that, Laurence realizes the blood’s side effects and start asking if it’s blasphemy. The part where music stops and words are spoken menacingly is when he realizes the blood is evil and tries to tell everybody to stop, spread the word, but nobody will listen The beautiful violin (edit: cello*) symbolizes laurence’s transformation into a beast, and after it he praises the holy-blood in a way more worrying way than in the beginning, like he’s completely controlled by the blood, unable to rationally think AHHH It’s beautiful
This has to be my favorite video you've put out so far, and a stark reminder as to just how much you deserve the insane growth you've been getting over the course of this channel's ever-evolving lifespan. Been here since around 5k, and I've only grown my smile wider and wider as you continue to upload and get the attention you deserve. Here's to you, Marco!
Aw!! Thank you so much. Really. I love this channel with every inch of my soul. Glad you’ve been here and glad you find something worth watching. It means a lot.
One of the brilliant details of this song is that it's sung from the point of view of LUDWIG'S SWORD, it refers to itself as mentor and companion to Ludwig even after he turned to a beast. It's a great, almost mythological angle to take for the song and I personally love it.
Thank you! Phase 1 is so often underapreciated, though I absolutely understand why people love phase 2. And yeah, those latin choruses are amazing! The lyrics for this, Laurence and Gehrman stand out among Soulsborne tracks for me.
My wife once described the second part of this song as "a gothic christmas carol" which honestly isn't too far off the baroque dance you'd described it as.
Old Hunters is the pinnacle of FromSoftware creation in every aspect. The weapons, the bosses, the lore, the music...all of it. Ludwig is such a fun fight. It's truly a spectacle to behold! I can hardly wait for Elden Ring DLC now.
Love the idea that Ludwig the Accursed is trying to "sing along" with his theme, but the only thing that comes out is that iconic scream. Amazing track, amazing boss fight. The shift from Accursed to Holy Blade is haunting, no one does lore like Fromsoft. Didn't know the lyrics until you spoke them out loud, which really illustrates the drama/bombast of Ludwig. Fantastic breakdown.
I'm so happy that you decided to give this OST another reaction. I can't decide if I like Ludwig's or Gael's theme more. Ludwig is one of the best songs i've heard, the ,,Holy Blade" melody is so catchy and just beautiful, but Gael's theme has beautiful three parts where every phase is just more powerful, and that third phase... God it's so good. Anyway, I think that Ludwig is one of best bosses in the video game history, period. I've never been so shocked, hyped and sad after the battle ended. The first time i've heard ,,THAT PART" of the song while Ludwig was attacking me to the rhythm of his theme was just too much for me, I just did a little break from Bloodborne to think about this beautiful moment, SO EPIC.
That long section with no commentary and just absolute vibing is all of us listening back to this track. Definitely one of the top tier tracks they've done. Also fantastic ones are the remastered storm king, and maiden astraea from the demons souls remake. Chills every time. Thanks for the commentary, it was awesome to see a classical singer's perspective.
There's a trope I've seen in a lot of video game boss fights, including the rest of the 'soulsborne' series. When you battle a person first, but then in 'phase 2', they get stronger by becoming a monster! But Ludwig does it backwards! You battle a monster, but in phase 2, he gets stronger by REGAINING HIS HUMANITY!
man this analysis and perspective from opera singer actually makes a whole new experience for audience to the extend that i feel it wasn't just a reaction, it's like a free class session and we are very grateful for it (sorry ma English are kinda weird)
Oh Ludwig, tragic saint, who wanted to give the people of Yharnam power and hope. May my last memory of you be as the man you died as, standing strong with your sword in hand.
I took it to mean in the sense of how Greek choruses work in Greek tragedies and the like. The Chorus is the one sort of telling the story. They're the ones keeping track of everything and can act as sort of narrators. That's how I understood it; also thanks to a Classics degree.
Man I love this song and your review of it gave me a much deeper understanding and appreciation of the meaning of the song and therefore of Ludwig himself.
I'm SO glad you came around to revisiting this song. Because, as you discovered, it's absolutely phenomenal. It's always been my favourite track from Bloodborne and is definitely among my top 5 of best FromSoftware music. I particularly loved how you recounted the lyrics and really felt it with phase 2. I love how unrestrained you always are when you listen to this impactful music. How relatable your reaction is. You don't hold back but instead let it carry you from emotion to emotion. You're really good at showing what's going on inside you and how the music affects you as it plays. This has been so far one if your greatest qualities. I can always see the way the music influences your state of being as it happens and this is what I enjoy most in your videos. Needless to say it's particularly noticeable in this one. Also a huge thanks for pointing out the music's regal quality in phase 1 that I haven't really noticed before. You always keep adding to my experience listening to these soundtracks. Your expertise always manages to expand my horizon and shed some light on facets of the music I previously overlooked, letting me view, or hear, it in a new way. Great stuff. As always, cheers!
Don't forget that this entire song is also aided by the boss battle itself. The first half as a screaming abomination that once was a man tries to trample and devour you. The second half as the Man emerges from the monster and continues the path of murder, but with skill and finesse. His intention is still your demise, but he has become the same form of beast he was when he earned his wicked curse. A man, a monster. A sainted sinner.
I really don't know why but when I hear music that I just love so much such as this. I tear up and sometimes do cry. I don't know why, just the epic sounds of music just shakes me down freaking love music so much
This might be a coincidence, but still worth reflecting over: The melody played by the violin at 9:35 after the phase transition starts out similarly to Sif the great grey wolf, shifted down a key. Sif, a beast in the technical sense, was unwaveringly loyal to her master and fought fiercely to guard his grave, along with the ring that allowed him to traverse the very abyss that corrupted him, perhaps even to spare others of his fate. As such, the strings follow through with a clear sense of purpose, guiding the theme, lamenting her duty has her stand in the way of fate itself. Ludwig, at that point, has only now reclaimed his sense of self the melody descends into uncertainty, as if it‘s just barely able to keep the piece under control, before crescendoing into this cacophony of misguided smiteage, as Ludwig, having lost all he sought to protect, trapped in a never ending nightmare, probably knowing full well that the only way out for him is a warriors death, makes a last stand as the himself, clear in purpose, but led astray by the very thing that guided him; at his side all along, his true mentor, his guiding moonlight
You do these characters and their themes so much justice! Another testament to how much care and respect From Soft have for their own creations. Love your rapturous facial expressions, too :D
“an honest death is like a blessing” is almost verbatim what maria tells you when you meet her. it’s a running theme in the bosses of the hunter’s nightmare. Ludwig, Maria, Laurence, the Orphan, and even the living failures too
I am happy to hear an actual opera singers perspective on this. I am familiar with the actual instrumentation of music from studying music theory, but it is nice to hear a singers take on these symphonic scores.
I'm so happy you reacted to the full version! The transformation from the chaotic and super creepy first part, to the much more easily recognizable melody in the second part describes Ludwig so well. From inhuman horror, to a last hurrah for a once noble warrior. I love it! It's one of my favorite FromSoft pieces too, and I've listened to it over and over. It's still incredibly powerful, and just makes me want to replay Bloodborne again!
My favorite boss of all time, right there. I've faced him like dozens of times, and yet I get crazy everytime. No other boss in any game I've ever played, even other From Software games, have had a boss that hit me as hard as this. You spend all the game of Bloodborne hearing about one "Ludwig" and how great, important and beloved he was, then suddenly you meet him, and he's the most grotesque abomination you've ever seen (and you've seem plenty of abominations by now). You prepare yourself to put the monster to rest, like a beast, but suddenly the guidance of the Moon shines upon him, and he remembers, and recovers some of his humanity. Suddenly you're not fighting "a beast" anymore, you're fighting LUDWIG, THE HOLY BLADE! All of this is so masterfully reflected on the boss design, the fight, the sounds, how he stops screaming and stands upright, holding his sword and giving his all like a warrior... And the MUSIC most of all!!! It sends me shivers down the spine, no matter how many times I fight this boss... 10/10 perfection
This is one of the best tracks Kitamura has ever composed. If you're a fan of that classic buildup into resolution, you should check out her Divine Dragon piece from Sekiro. It does the same concept, but goes with a more traditional Japanese style of music
Stuff like ludwig and his soundtrack i think really encapsulates why people love bloodborne so much. Fromsoft really nailed that gothic horror aesthetic perfectly
I love the Latin breakdowns, that adds layers to the song I would have had no idea about without your going over them and it really adds to my love for this song. Not only does it clearly come across as a dance to the death with this disgusting powerful beast, it also sings about his tragic tale right under your nose while a lot of people, myself included may not be able to hear that with not understanding it, so it's like a hidden tragic tale, much like how to find that in the game you'd also have to really look beneath the surface to find that out. Not to mention the high voice kinda makes me think of people wailing in grief at the loss of this holy symbol in Yharnam, a man that was looked up to by the people of the healing church.
Great analysis! I really love this track. The meeting with Ludwig is an absolute revelation both in the context of the lore and the greater design trends of From Software boss fights, and the music perfectly encapsulates that. If a first time player follows the lore of Bloodborne, all they've heard about Ludwig the Holy Blade before this point is that he was a legendary church hunter, almost a mythological hero - a Saint, even. But what they encounter here is an Accursed demon, an utter monstrosity. And the start of the track is like straight out of a horror movie, and transitions into an unholy chant. Almost every boss in Soulsborne starts monstrous, and gets worse in the phase transition. But Ludwig reverses that. The doomed beast remembers who he used to be, and as he grabs his sword (the legendary Moonlight sword that exists in every game) and he reverts somewhat to the knightly figure he used to be. And here the music becomes more heroic, like the final fight between two epic heroes, or perhaps this doomed soul fighting for his own eternal fate. And when the battle is done, all that remains is his talking head. Here we can choose to lie to him, that his legacy is heroic, not beastly, and we give the doomed soul a little hope in his personal hell. The music, following the presentation beat for beat really elevates it to one of from softwares best boss fights, and one of the best tragic character meetings.
One year ago and I'm just seeing you completely get into the drama and amazing feel of this. It was a joy to watch you move to the music and mouth the lyrics. I've loved this song and boss fight, like so many others, for ages and after showing people that never had the same reaction or appreciated it, it was lovely to watch someone feel it like we all have. Freaking awesome.
Another amazing react. Utter side tangent, the highlight of this vid unexpectedly turned out to be 2:24. Did not see that coming but totally made my day.
i said in one of your livestreams of Elden Ring that your video about Ludwig, the Holy Blade OST was my favorite, that it was simply incredible, and now you just have made it even better. Great analysis as always, Marco!
I can't help but wonder how choirs in video games would sound to me if I knew the language they sang in. Like imagine playing through fromsoft games and you were able to pick up on the lore hints sprinkled throughout the choir in the boss themes. I honestly envy someone who was able to go through these games with that knowledge, it would be a totally different experience.
Unfortunately a lot of songs that use latin choirs don’t actually have lyrics (at least, not meaningful lyrics like this one, just words that sound good), this song is one of the exceptions and is much better off for it.
The fact this piece has so much narrative in it and it reflects the vibe and the situation Ludwig is in so well is exceptional. Also the fact this man was able to break it down so well is the cheffs kiss on top of it all. Love videos like this!
So something (maybe) interesting. I had heard a remix of Ludwig, the Holy Blade that had that first line of Latin translated, and because of that I had been under the impression that this fight was supposed to be one final battle for a blessed death (both you and Ludwig fighting to give eachother a final rest). Now that I know what the lines afterward say, this song has suddenly taken on a whole different feel.
I already watched tons of videos like this, but this is different, the other vids usually just talked about the feelings that a music causes, but you are insane! you analysis everything of the music, and this music that I just thought was just a very good music is in fact an experiene. This is just incredible.
Let us all Waltz to our death! The chorus sounds like a swirling manic vortex, absolutely haunting and why it's cemented as my favorite game ever and boss theme.
Always nice to see more people appreciating this absolute banger of a theme, hope you are doing well good sir! Also, the name of the game in the description is World of Warcraft. And as a personal recommendation, I think you would probably enjoy the Castlevania Lords of Shadow soundtrack, the games have decent to nice gameplay, sort of mixed bag story but definitely really good to amazing soundtrack and artistic visual design elements.
my god i NEVER get tired of hearing this track and i wholeheartedly agree that this is the best track and boss fight combo from software have ever made. one of my favourite lore theories regarding ludwig is that he resisted the curse of the beast longer than anyone else, but this meant that when he finally transformed it was far more horrific and disturbing. people speculate that ludwig was riding his horse, doing his usual thing killing beasts, when one beast managed to decapitate his beloved steed. this rage caused ludwig to finally succumb to the curse, but in the process his flesh was fused with that of horse. hence why it seems like he has way too many legs, a disgusting stump, and a terrifying horse/human face.
12:30 Ludwig was a hunter for the church, but when he found the Moonlight Greatsword, that's when it all went wrong for him. He started having hallucinations of these "fairies" from the sword, and they're what eventually lead him to what he is now, he ended up being driven mad by the sword and the hunt, and it's what caused him to be turned into a beast.
There's also something to be said that they KNEW how much of a good song it was, that they used it for the trailer for the expansion. I remember hearing the song with the trailer, when it came out, and just being so beyond hyped. And then getting to find out that it was the Phase 2 theme for the first boss, and a major figure in the lore, that we had heard so much about via items and such in the world. Watching him go from slavering beast to regaining himself for one last dance of death against a fellow hunter is something that'll stick with me for many years.
Alright time for my own rant to add a bit with this amazing comment section: The way I see the music of bloodborne and especially Ludwig is "two sides of your sanity battling themselves" as the tracks take this massive chivalry mixed with horror vibe, all of them expressing in differently like for example Gascoigne having this moments where it feels the music is physically punching you on every beat, the solemn that irradiated your fight with the First Hunter, the desperation with the blood-starved beast. But with Ludwig is...so increased You have this honorable hunter who set a mark in the history of hunters, this massive personality trapped in a horrible abomination between horse and man. The instruments try to convey this, it attempts to bring attention to the bright past of the great Ludwig, but they are all out of sync, just barely that they mix in a way that doesn't manage to convey his achievements. Then the moonlight appears, Ludwig remembers who he is and stands proudly as best he can in his warped body The vocals join in. The vocals **accuse* Ludwig of the monster he has become, tells him that the only thing that exist in his life now is blood, and it will flow *eternally* no remorse for his old self, no redemption for the hunter, just death, killing those who come his way or being killed by the main Hunter. But the music now is clear, his mind has returned to somewhat sanity and the music finally is able to display how powerful the church hunter is. You have the voice of insanity over Ludwig ear tempting him to return to a beast and you have the voice of sanity, his past reminded him who he once was
I have not played this game, and I will not as I do not enjoy that genre of games, but god damn I will continue listening to this mindblowing masterpiece of music
I don’t have much dreams or goals in life except one. To be able to hear a soulsbornes soundtracks live opera. I would do ANYTHING to hear those hauntingly beautiful tracks live before I die

It’s like the game is saying “The monster you once fought was killed by Ludwig, and now you fight not just a man, but a legend.”
The second phase music is so good, I’m sure everyone knows how the fight turns into a mad waltz, but I always imagine the more poetic aspect is the hunter in this struggle against this massive creature, fighting with extreme intensity, and as a hunter you see him as a beast, nothing more. He’s another animal to be put down. But like I said before, once he becomes the holy blade, the song turns from struggle to dance, as in the hunter realizes he’s no longer facing the same opponent, and instead of putting down an animal, it’s like both Ludwig and the hunter silently agree with “Let’s finish this properly.”
Fromsoftware is so fucking good. Sorry about the huge rant there, I love bloodborne so much.
I liked it
You may be badass, but you'll never be "Ludwig regaigning his humanity to make an epic last stand" badass
Great comment! I actually had no idea fire weapons etc. don't work in the second phase!
Your experience as an opera singer really adds a whole new level of analysis and perspective on these tracks that I've never seen anyone else look into to this extent, excellent analysis as always!

“There’s no way you could head bang to classical music!!!!🤓”
The piece in question:
This comment Is too real
This isn't classical music, a lot of people think that any kind of orchestral musical is called "classical", but classical refers to music written in the classical period (approx. 1750-1820, after the baroque period, before the romantic period). Think Hadyn, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven (though some argue that he's a romantic composer, I think probably just a mix).
This isn't even written in a classical style, it's just instrumental game music. Very, very well composed game music.
-----------Essay warning------------
Key features of Bloodborne OSTSs:
Orchestral techniques:
-Clusters
-Aleatoric techniques
-Tremolos
-Layered dissonant harmony
-Rhythmic ostinatos
-Soaring melodic lines
General characteristics- choir:
-Use of large, prominent 32-person SATB choir.
-Choir division- from 3-note chords to 8-note dissonant chords
-Vocal effects (clusters, slides, murmurs)
Unrelentingly dissonant, broad emotional palette, somber, soaring, nightmarish, tormented, often very loud.
Safe to say, if this had been released during the classical period, everyone would have thought Nobuyoshi an avatar of Satan and have him executed or something haha
It was fun flipping through my old GCSE music notebook to write this, hope anyone who read this found this interesting! :)
@@starmochi9692
What would you name this exact type of music?

Ahh, no worries! And yeah I agree, the composers did a really good job

Holy moly! Your the first person I’ve ever seen analyze the Latin lyrics in this song. Amazing to see a normally overlooked factor get it’s time in the spotlight!
!!! They’re pretty important!
I never played Bloodborne, but honestly the lore intrigued me and unless you noticed. The most heartfelt song of this game, Gehrman the first Hunter has latin lyrics that tells the tales of how it was for Gehrman.
So many people write it off as “it’s total gibberish” but it’s clearly an attempt at utilization of the Latin we have uncovered over time.
@@lillonerboi504 From what ive heard, it is gibberish, in a way. Its definitely latin, however much of the grammar and conjugation is improper.

Genuine question, wasn't it London Philharmonic Orchestra that did BB's soundtrack? I know someone else composed the songs, but didn't they play them?
Absolutely
That makes the chanted chorus about his curse even more sad, honestly.
Phase 2 really has a lot of his old nobility creeping through. He goes from rabid beast to fallen knight

Always love and appreciate your input!

My brother was like , “Bro, what were you doing?”
I responded “Did you hear that music?”
He was like, “I wanted to keep listening but you got killed 😫😫”
That’s a good memory.
Stay up.
I always get goosebumps at 9:50. It sounds so horrendous and beautiful and tragic and painful and FURIOUS all at the same time.
I can hear Ludwig's inhuman screeches in my mind when listening to the first phase music. This game is truly one of a kind.
I absolutely love ludwigs boss theme, it's one of my favorite boss themes of all time
"Ah... There you are, my friend..."
I love the way you can literally pinpoint the moment he sees his blade and regain his humanity in his music at 7:52
The first time you fight this monstrosity, you don't even pay attention to the music that much.
How incredibly well said. The transition into phase two is so insanely well done. One of the best fights in the series.
Much like you say, after you get this fight down and realize how in sync he moves with the music, we as players begin to do same, learning this beautiful dance that only we who’ve done this fight multiple times can. There are many songs that come close this but this is pure transcendence
"Ludwig has returned to the hunt one last time" and what a beautiful sight it was.
You have a way with words, it makes me want to start BB up and play up to Ludwig right now!
This guy’s movements are what many of us are too shy to do in public and in front of a camera. Love the energy of it.
I just wanna say, the way Marco behaved when the phase 2 entered is literally me every time with my fav Fromsoft themes. I love to be passionate about the masterpieces they bring us, and some particular songs like this one, Ludwigs theme, just makes me feel alive. I really love Fromsoftware, man
The absolute passion and love for this song he shows is absolutely wonderful
Yes, they make so many incredible boss themes. Hell even the ambient music they make is sometimes incredible such as Leyndell Royal Capital in Elden Ring. Oh and the title screen music is usually really good. Ah screw it they just do good game music in general.
I love how his theme so perfectly portrays the disgust from himself and us by just sounding kinda off with that chorus and strings, while still sounding emposing and massive.
In the second phase he shifts into something menacing, the disgust is not important anymore, all that matters is that he is going to kill you and you have to do everything in your power to not die
yet it all has that light string sound so honorable
"Ah you were at my side all along. My true mentor. My guiding moonlight!" One of gaming's greatest moments. Every single aspect of this fight is masterful beyond believe, the art direction, the sound design, the music the combat mechanics and the story significance. I wonder if FromSoftware will ever be able to top this.
Once masterpiece is made. Non can even come close to it. Do not expect the consistency of one to be repeated. Expect one of different origins that could reflect such grandure, even if that reflection is distorted.
Ludwig's song transition to the Holy Blade still gives me goosebumps even after all these years.
Translating is actually a really cool aspect of this channel.
The part where music stops and words are spoken menacingly is when he realizes the blood is evil and tries to tell everybody to stop, spread the word, but nobody will listen
The beautiful violin (edit: cello*) symbolizes laurence’s transformation into a beast, and after it he praises the holy-blood in a way more worrying way than in the beginning, like he’s completely controlled by the blood, unable to rationally think
AHHH It’s beautiful
Much to interpret here ❤️❤️

The absolute INSANITY of this piece will forever be etched into my brain. It's like a mad waltz mixed with a bit of apocalypse.
One of the brilliant details of this song is that it's sung from the point of view of LUDWIG'S SWORD, it refers to itself as mentor and companion to Ludwig even after he turned to a beast.
It's a great, almost mythological angle to take for the song and I personally love it.
"Ah, you were right here along...
My mentor.... My guiding moonlight...."
Thank you! Phase 1 is so often underapreciated, though I absolutely understand why people love phase 2. And yeah, those latin choruses are amazing! The lyrics for this, Laurence and Gehrman stand out among Soulsborne tracks for me.
imo phase 1 sounds 10x better when you add in Ludwig’s unholy shrieks
Of course
Thank you so much for revisiting this song! It is an incredible piece, and your insight elevates it to a whole new level.
Thanks Jeff! I intend to relisten to lady Maria as well and peek at the Latin
4:07 You translating the lyrics raised the hair on my head. Thank you! Ahh the Greek Chorus! I’m hype! LOL
It's actually latin

Oh Ludwig, tragic saint, who wanted to give the people of Yharnam power and hope. May my last memory of you be as the man you died as, standing strong with your sword in hand.
I absolutely bursted out in laughter when, after reading perfect latin, you exclaimed "That is a greek chorus!"
Love your vids!
Hahahahahaha DIDNT even think
About that!!!
I took it to mean in the sense of how Greek choruses work in Greek tragedies and the like. The Chorus is the one sort of telling the story. They're the ones keeping track of everything and can act as sort of narrators. That's how I understood it; also thanks to a Classics degree.
this theme definetly has the best choir and strings syncronization from any fromsoft game
Thank you for this insanely nice comment. ❤️

Ludwig, at that point, has only now reclaimed his sense of self the melody descends into uncertainty, as if it‘s just barely able to keep the piece under control, before crescendoing into this cacophony of misguided smiteage, as Ludwig, having lost all he sought to protect, trapped in a never ending nightmare, probably knowing full well that the only way out for him is a warriors death, makes a last stand as the himself, clear in purpose, but led astray by the very thing that guided him;
at his side all along, his true mentor, his guiding moonlight
Glad you like it!

Ludwig is definitely one of fromsofts greatest achievements
If ludwig is the cello then the holy moonlight sword is the choir
9:45 he just like me fr
One year ago and I'm just seeing you completely get into the drama and amazing feel of this. It was a joy to watch you move to the music and mouth the lyrics. I've loved this song and boss fight, like so many others, for ages and after showing people that never had the same reaction or appreciated it, it was lovely to watch someone feel it like we all have. Freaking awesome.
Yeah pretty much the entire fromsoft community agrees that this one is the best by far
You know when you have spent too much time in a bossfight when you know exactly what the boss is doing by just listening to his music.
I always loved Ludwigs track but to know now that they put his LORE in the MUSIC is just amazing! No one does what fromsoft does
I love watching your videos, it shows that you are very immersed in the world of music and you express all your emotions. A great view!
Another amazing react. Utter side tangent, the highlight of this vid unexpectedly turned out to be 2:24. Did not see that coming but totally made my day.
😂
i said in one of your livestreams of Elden Ring that your video about Ludwig, the Holy Blade OST was my favorite, that it was simply incredible, and now you just have made it even better. Great analysis as always, Marco!
Thank you Arthur!!! It was fun to revisit and make better
:)
Thats the story for gherman and his music in a sense atleast haha
I already watched tons of videos like this, but this is different, the other vids usually just talked about the feelings that a music causes, but you are insane! you analysis everything of the music, and this music that I just thought was just a very good music is in fact an experiene. This is just incredible.
Wow, thank you!
Let us all Waltz to our death! The chorus sounds like a swirling manic vortex, absolutely haunting and why it's cemented as my favorite game ever and boss theme.
Got me hooked to the channel in the first minute! Love your analysis of the track
I don’t know why! I changed it!
yoooo! so glad you made a video covering the whole track!
"Ah... you were at my side all long.
My true mentor. My guiding Moonlight."
Wow I really love this reaction! The opera experience just adds a whole new level to it. I'm subbed!
Thanks for subbing!
my god i NEVER get tired of hearing this track and i wholeheartedly agree that this is the best track and boss fight combo from software have ever made. one of my favourite lore theories regarding ludwig is that he resisted the curse of the beast longer than anyone else, but this meant that when he finally transformed it was far more horrific and disturbing. people speculate that ludwig was riding his horse, doing his usual thing killing beasts, when one beast managed to decapitate his beloved steed. this rage caused ludwig to finally succumb to the curse, but in the process his flesh was fused with that of horse. hence why it seems like he has way too many legs, a disgusting stump, and a terrifying horse/human face.
This ost is too good bro omg, literal chills listening to it
watching marco completely rock out to this song is is just awesome. I do the same when im driving home from work
Alright time for my own rant to add a bit with this amazing comment section:
The way I see the music of bloodborne and especially Ludwig is "two sides of your sanity battling themselves" as the tracks take this massive chivalry mixed with horror vibe, all of them expressing in differently like for example Gascoigne having this moments where it feels the music is physically punching you on every beat, the solemn that irradiated your fight with the First Hunter, the desperation with the blood-starved beast. But with Ludwig is...so increased
You have this honorable hunter who set a mark in the history of hunters, this massive personality trapped in a horrible abomination between horse and man. The instruments try to convey this, it attempts to bring attention to the bright past of the great Ludwig, but they are all out of sync, just barely that they mix in a way that doesn't manage to convey his achievements. Then the moonlight appears, Ludwig remembers who he is and stands proudly as best he can in his warped body
The vocals join in. You have the voice of insanity over Ludwig ear tempting him to return to a beast and you have the voice of sanity, his past reminded him who he once was
This is one of my favourite videos on UA-cam.
The part where you go over the lyrics oozes passion
:)
Hey man this was super awesome, thank you for sharing your expertise it was super interesting to hear your thoughts I really enjoyed your video
