These were the days when us hardened Corrie fans were quite contented with two classy episodes per week that allowed for high artistry in scriptwriting and performance. Today’s five-a-week assembly line production rate, with constantly amped-up violence to waken drowsy punters, cannot compete with the show’s original achievements. The great days of well written class and acting on a grand masterclass and characters we cared for have sadly been replaced by measures of domestic violence and hype. Thanks to these wonderful uploads we are reminded what a truly wonderful and outstanding drama serial Coronation Street once was.
I don’t know…I’ve been watching these episodes from the beginning (as many as I can find uploaded), and I have to say, I’m kind of getting sick of this period with weak and feeble characters like Mavis, pompous snobs like Annie, cantankerous assholes like Albert, busybodies like Hilda, and characters that look like they’re in their 50s played by actors in their 30s like Vera. With the exception of Ken/Bet/Ena, I’m honestly not rooting for anybody else right now. I’m sure the show will always have those kind of characters in slight variations, but right now, I’m looking forward to a change in pace.
Couldn’t agree more with this. The current Corrie has its quality diluted with the number or episodes per week. I wish Corrie could/would return to their original roots.
@@gilliangrant8764 I feel corrie's decline started to become irreversible when the Battersby's arrived. Also, storylines like Toyah's rape, Frescho's siege, and the Richard Hillman saga attracted such high viewings, they thought they could get away with doing it more often, though it only drove it further into the ground.
@@paulfrost8895 I couldn't have put it better myself but after Elsie and Annie walker and albert and the fab Len departed in 1983/ 84 the show began to diminish . with the characters that replaced them such as the bombastic Kevin Webster terry Duckworth and curly watts aka Kevin Kennedy .
Ena is a brilliant character. I didn't think so at first, but she's grown on me. A miserable old bag, has, for me, turned into a paragon of realism, sincerity, comedy, and wisdom. Violet Carson also had fantastic comic timing.
I can only remember Ena from the late 70s when I was 6, 7, 8 years old I really didn't like her. What I do like now especially is her alliance with Elsie Tanner. I love Elsie Tanner. She reminded me of my year 2 primary school teacher, looked a lot like her. Although unlike Elsie, my teacher had a mouthful of gold fillings which the 6-year-old me found fascinating.
@@ZadenZaneAs the story goes, Ena Sharples delivered Elsie and I think that's the connection of the love/hate with each other. I think Ena looked on Elsie as a mock daughter....Ena wanted better for her...as we saw as Ena got older, their relationship thawed.
They could have re-created something like the wonderful chemistry and storylines with Daisy and Glenda in the modern Corrie but no such luck. The current writers haven't got an inkling.......
The moment when the table moves and Hilda screams is probably the funniest, hilarious (possibly running on par with Maureen & Reg Holdsworth realising their waterbed has burst open) scenes Coronation Street has ever produced. I think they were well matched tbh. There isn't an excuse to cheat no matter what your spouse is like and that's what Ray did. Deirdre was attacked and that didn't help her mental state, Ray was hardly nurturing. Deirdre tried to forgive him but couldn't, he didn't deserve it. He left without even looking back and hardly no concern for his daughter.

2:12:03 - Deirdre says "maybe I'm more like her than I thought I was," comparing herself to her mother Blanche. Well, you certainly are, Deirdre, in fact I had forgotten what a nagging shrew of a wife you were to Ray Langton. It's hardly a shock the marriage was over in three short years.
I know and some of those actors are my age now and they look so much older. They did dress older back then. That lady in the bed looked about 80 plus tbh.
My Dad was only 54 back then and I thought he was so old. I used to love relaxing after work in the factory watching corrie but it was only in the early 80's that Irish TV (RTE) aired it and we only had one channel until 1978. My Dad lived to 91 btw.
Love the scene at 19:13 . Both Elsie and Ena were the absolute best. And again, and 24:24 when Ena has a right go at Annie Walker. Annie sure as anything, deserved that. Missus Sharples was an absolute legend
Classic Corrie was SO good. Such excellent characters. I nearly cried when Martha died in the snug, same when Minnie left. Ena is an absolute jewel. Hilda and Stan, Elsie, Annie, Albert, Betty and Bet; pure gold. Having the smaller cast with time for character development made all the difference. So glad a new audience (me!) is able to discover this gem of a show. Thank you
Every set of episodes theres 1 or 2 characters that stand apart & i Wax lyrical about their merits & Qualities! This video, Bett Lynch is just slaying me! Her one liners, her comebacks & her quick fire wit & The looks she gives are louder than any words! Ive never, to my knowledge, heard her fluff a line! She REALLY is Bett Lynch! She immerses herself so fully in to the character she has made Bett Lynch a household name A national Treasure & very very sadly not with us now but she lives on in these videos A true testament to a brilliant actress, a true Brit, and she created a character that will live On & on. So sad when Julie passed on So many of these wonderful characters no longer with us But we still see them thanks To the uploader! Great thanks 🇬🇧👧
Julie Goodyear has dementia so sadly is not as she once was , but as you say she and all the cast we can see in their prime giving us so much happiness. I often wonder watching them what they would think of us all watching in 2024 , I'm sure they'd be amazed and proud x
At 4:21:15 Elsie asks Rita if she'd ever met Dennis - to which Rita replies she hasn't- a major continuity error as Rita's first appearance in the show was in 1964 was with Dennis! Odder still - 30 odd years later she married him.
"we got 7" - then the look on Stans face!!! - I have never laughed as much since Delboy Trotter fell through the open-hatch bar in 'fool n horses'. You could NEVER have another Stan Ogden :-)
I remember reading an interview with Peter Baldwin. He said he was a terrible giggler, and made everyone else crack up at Alf’s line about Aunty Edith asking to be cremated! Then they couldn’t act for laughing and had to come in early the following morning to redo it! 😂
The street itself looks gritty and poor. It is precisely how we imagine it was. ( I am from Queensland where sunshine is abundant.) For many years now, Coronation Street has taken on the gentrified look. Characters seem very well heeled until the writers decide that there should be some focus on a family suddenly struggling to rub two pennies together. It doesn’t last and the focus shifts to the wealthy owner of Underworld. There is no storyline featuring families pulling together to pay bills and put food on the table. These 1970’s episodes are gold. It was heartwarming to see Stan and Hilda have one night in a posh hotel. Hilda was sober and knew it was back the the grindstone. Tea and toast for breakfast opposite a hungover Stan who ordered everything on the menu. Hilda “I work three jobs…….” No wonder they were popular at the time. Most people identified with them. I love the community spirit and that most people have a lodger. I come from Australia where people whinge and moan if they have to take in a tenant. There are so many positives. Extra money, company and just having someone there can mean the world. Thank you for posting these golden years. It’s a true treat for many of us who didn’t grow up on cobbled Northern Streets. I don’t know when Coronation was truly in the toilet because I didn’t tune in until around 1998/99. I’ve started in 1976 and will watch through until 1989. My favourite is Elsie Tanner. I like the introduction of Mike Baldwin and the world of business, industry and sweat shops. We are given insight into how every single person plays a vital role in keeping the wheels moving in a forwards direction. I particularly like the work ethic.
I just saw a video from where they go to a break at 33:31 but it shows Jean obviously get the giggles and it sets the others off and Pat playfully bangs her hands on Jean and Julie's. Apparently it was shown at the time but they obviously cut it here.
Always such great social history - the debates Alf and Mike had about the trade unions and Mavis and Rita had about a divided society, reflected the serious concerns people had in the 1970s about industrial relations. Unions and management were at each other's throat.
Is it possible that you could load February 1983? just when you are able. Many thanks, your effort, in keeping us entertained, is very much appreciated.
Course it's possible my dear Kat Y. Got lots on my plate at the moment but the February full metal jacket will be uploaded at the right time and that time will be at exactly the right time...that is, when I think all your tongues are hanging out. Just enjoying the only bit of power I have and the Ken, Deirdre, Mike manage a twat is perfect storyline to be... all powerful. ❤️
Spot on London lady.manners cost nothing . he's a ignorant, cantankerous old git, sponging free drinks because we all owe him as he fought the war on his own.
Thanks ProfessionalGun66! These episodes are brilliant!♥️ I recognised Peters face so I looked him up. He’s called Joseph McKenna (the first real Scottish actor to get a part) he’s been in General Hospital & a BBC soap called The MacKinnons & quite a few more! He quit acting, moved to New York and believe it or not he’s now classed as “The Worlds Greatest Hairdresser & Stylist” he mixes with the elite, owns & runs his own glossy fashion magazine called “Joe’s” that costs £65.00 a copy! & all in all has become extremely successful! ♥️
The way Dawn the barmaid was treated by the male customers was very indicitive of social attitudes in the 70s. It was very much the era of the dirty old man.
That's exactly the sort of reaction she was hoping to get. If anything, she was treated worse by the women. Not one of them called out Bet on her hypocrisy. She looked like a much bigger tart than Dawn, who actually looked quite nice, I think. And I don't mean that in any kind of leering way. I don't think she deserved all that bullying and humiliation. All the women were nasty to and about her. I've always said a woman's biggest enemy is within.
@@stevenhighams4190 I think we can agree that it wasn't a particularly enlightened era and that was reflected and amplifies by so much of TV at the time. Tony Warren himself talked about how so many of the writers of coronation street had social attitudes that had just crawled out of the ark.
@@zeddeka And just where has all this "enlightenment" got us? There's more violence and more division than ever before, and zero due respect for others. Platitudes trip off tongues like they've been rehearsed by people who are afraid to speak up and say what they really believe. Everything gets swept under the carpet and a heavy price will yet be paid for this somewhere down the line. This does not make for a healthy society; rather, it makes for the sick society we live in today. The majority of people who were around then would love to turn the clock back to a time in which we were free and chose our friends in the old fashioned way - for who they were, not for what they were. When liking and loving happened naturally, not because you were instructed that you had to, which is just a false situation and devoid of real trust. And going back to your original point about the way the men reacted to Dawn; do you really believe, in your wildest dreams, that women don't behave in the same way around men? I've got news for you - they do! I could write a book on what I know about women's lascivious behaviour. Take it from me, those men are restrained in comparison.
I watched corrie from when it started till Tracey Barlow got let out prison for murder haven't watched it since couldn't stand her character it was getting to much like eastenders full of murders and criminals. would you live on a street with all the murders that have accoured in a small street like corrie I prefer to watch the old episodes, real to life and fun but still the odd catastrophe and crimes and more down to earth rather than a murder series
In what mental world was Auntie Edie only 69? She was 80 if she was a day. 3:27:32 "What time is it now?" "Ten to ten." Clock behind on the wall says 4.30.
While I liked the early Corrie - it seemed to me they were totally useless at writing important characters out like Minnie and Ena etc. They sort of have a weak story and faded out. After 10 or 20 years it feels as if they just shuffled them out with barely a thank you and shut the door as you leave and they just forgot about them.
Yes, there was no riding off the street in a taxi with a special theme back then. However, many of the them died when they were away from the street, it was hard to give them a huge send off. Minnie, Ena, Uncle Albert, Hilda etc al.
No. Derrick's mother was played by Hilary Mason, who seemed to have cropped up in almost everything, including the film' 'Don't Look Now', where she played one of the sinister sisters.
Oh it's such a shame that the BBC show 'No. 9' didn't seem to know about this séance scene, it would've been perfect for the big arc finale they did at Granada Studios, showing all of the supposed paranormal activity that has happened over the years. Hilda screaming at the end of the scene would've been amazing for it ;-). Is anybody there....?
Its amazing what people did before mobile phones, how did we survive in emergencies? Peter going off like that to look for help is the only thing he could do although waiting for light mightve been a bit more wise. Keeping each other warm was paramount.

Dear God, 69 was considered old and way past your prime in 1977! Wonder how Rita and Co. would feel if told that today lol
Deidre never bloody stops, she gets on my last nerve, just like Rita, money, money, money
Makes more sense for a new mother to be like that, but they bug me too
Yes when looking back now she is a very entitled woman demanding everything her own way fires her lines out so fast thankfully I can rewind it
Love the scene at 19:13 . Both Elsie and Ena were the absolute best. And again, and 24:24 when Ena has a right go at Annie Walker. Annie sure as anything, deserved that. Missus Sharples was an absolute legend
The Ogden's were so comical ' there were plenty of laughs with them.
If there is an after life l can't wait to meet ena.
Love Hilda and Stan..brilliant.
Thank you
I was 25 and living in Portsmouth that year. What a trip down memory lane watching hours of this. Old England, that is long gone.
Sadly long gone.😢
Love it Corrie great actors and actresses 💯💯💯💯💯😊
I legit can’t get enough of the factory gals
Wow thank the lord you uploaded lol cheers love xxx
These were the best days of corrie, love all the cast
Those backdrops in the builders’ yard 🤣
😂😂😂🤩
CGI 1977 style. Corrie Great Improvisation.
Classic Ena Sharples 👍
Every set of episodes theres 1 or 2 characters that stand apart & i
Wax lyrical about their merits &
Qualities!
This video, Bett Lynch is just slaying me! Her one liners, her comebacks & her quick fire wit &
The looks she gives are louder than any words!
Ive never, to my knowledge, heard her fluff a line!
She REALLY is Bett Lynch!
She immerses herself so fully in to the character she has made Bett Lynch a household name
A national Treasure & very very sadly not with us now but she lives on in these videos
A true testament to a brilliant actress, a true Brit, and she created a character that will live
On & on.
So sad when Julie passed on
So many of these wonderful characters no longer with us
But we still see them thanks
To the uploader!
Great thanks
🇬🇧👧
Julie is still very much alive, she has dementia but her sparkle still shines.
Julie Goodyear has dementia so sadly is not as she once was , but as you say she and all the cast we can see in their prime giving us so much happiness.
I often wonder watching them what they would think of us all watching in 2024 , I'm sure they'd be amazed and proud x
Was there only one kettle in the prop department? That orange kettle goes from house to house, or did they buy a job lot?
4:38:00 Best thing about this show in a long time: my favorite Black Sabbath song on Coronation Street.
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
At 4:21:15 Elsie asks Rita if she'd ever met Dennis - to which Rita replies she hasn't- a major continuity error as Rita's first appearance in the show was in 1964 was with Dennis!
Odder still - 30 odd years later she married him.
There's also a 1972 episode in a club where she's with Len, Elsie and Alan and says she did know him, very well.
Stan and Hilda could have had their own programme.
I love these classic episodes, stopped watching when the Battersbys came on the scene.
Len and Rita come off really mean in this one
"we got 7" - then the look on Stans face!!! - I have never laughed as much since Delboy Trotter fell through the open-hatch bar in 'fool n horses'. You could NEVER have another Stan Ogden :-)
Annie vs. Ena - gold !
loved corrie in the 70's
I remember reading an interview with Peter Baldwin. He said he was a terrible giggler, and made everyone else crack up at Alf’s line about Aunty Edith asking to be cremated! Then they couldn’t act for laughing and had to come in early the following morning to redo it! 😂
Hilda, Stan and Eddie were just a comedy trio 🤣
When bet says eyes down .. legendary
"Stan going to the carsie" LOL.
Three months before I was born. Nice to see.
Rita in full cry was a mencing thing to behold!
Charles Anzavour etc, Hilda's world of comedy is a tonic for the troops.
A bit hypocritical of Rita to complain about others being antagonistic to Mavis.
Loved that rescue mission! The giant squadron 😁🎉
5:53:28 the item Renee is referring to is Camp Coffee Essence....it was a chicory liquid that you added to hot water i believe...
Lovely stuff, especially on ice cream. I always keep a bottle in the cupboard.
@@susi-emily Never tried it personally. My Mum never bought it.
@@professionalgun6674 LOL and quite right too! I will continue salivating lol
The older I get, the more I relate to uncle Albert. I guess by the time u reach his age you've just had enough of ppls b.s.
Even though he's a grump, he has an amazing heart and definitely cares about people. That's why he's a beloved character, very complex.
He reminds me of a few seniors who treat people terribly because they feel the world owes them. No excuse for bad manners.
Spot on London lady.manners cost nothing . he's a ignorant, cantankerous old git, sponging free drinks because we all owe him as he fought the war on his own.
It's hilarious how they keep saying that Aunt Edie was ANCIENT and rightfully dead at 69! LOL
Time on the clock never changes.
Albert is as funny as hell! Sometimes people as miserable as that have the best humour! But wow...Rita and Len and how they go for Mavis
Great editing thanks.
"Right through, except for the toilets." Hilarious!
I can't recon why Deidre was so bothered about the lolly. She must've been coining it, by playing the role of Olive, on the "On the Buses," series.
He ain’t a hairdresser 😂 he’s a stylist for the elite 😊
Did Annie’s carpet come from a department store, I seem to remember something like that
Which station does Peter go into? Looks like Victoria. 🤔
Ken's pants are so tight to go hiking
😂
I watched corrie from when it started till Tracey Barlow got let out prison for murder haven't watched it since couldn't stand her character it was getting to much like eastenders full of murders and criminals. would you live on a street with all the murders that have accoured in a small street like corrie I prefer to watch the old episodes, real to life and fun but still the odd catastrophe and crimes and more down to earth rather than a murder series
I agree with you.
I haven't watched it since the Abusive Geoff & Yasmine storyline. it was a ridiculous & over the top ending
Continuity errors with Peter Barlow's age. Born 5th April 1965 means he was 12 not 13 in these.
In what mental world was Auntie Edie only 69? She was 80 if she was a day. 3:27:32 "What time is it now?" "Ten to ten." Clock behind on the wall says 4.30.
Albert’s clock has stopped . It is 4:30 in many scenes.
43:48 Brilliant scene, with Betty marching down the street,
And keeping her sherry where the 🐒 keeps his nuts!😂😂😂
Why are Suzie and Gail dressed like Dodge City saloon girls?
Again, I turned the sound down and gave it the Buggernation treatment 😂😂😂😂 especially all the scenes with Mavis 😂😂😂
“Women are like that heads in the clouds” oh please do one Ken!
The "Dawn's" of this world soon has all nonsense of a "sisterhood" flying straight out of the window.
I love all these - if Len and Ray could just button one more - they look ridiculous 😂
If Coronation Street is set in Manchester, then why do nearly all the characters seem to have Yorkshire accents?
Black Sabbath Dirty Women - 5:04:30
Didnt Mavis cousin play Dericks Mother
No. Derrick's mother was played by Hilary Mason, who seemed to have cropped up in almost everything, including the film' 'Don't Look Now', where she played one of the sinister sisters.
@MsArrowroot Thankyou
Where's ena?
have a feeling renne would have been a cracking landlady for the rovers.....sodding producers
OMG. Let's put auntie Edie and Deirdre on a freaking ice float and put them into the ocean 😮
24.55 what a scene..a clash of the matriarchs....magnificently acted by Mrs Walker and Mrs Sharples
Well they got the casting right with Ken's and Peter's nose and even in later episodes...even though the accent changed dramatically.
Its amazing what people did before mobile phones, how did we survive in emergencies? Peter going off like that to look for help is the only thing he could do although waiting for light mightve been a bit more wise. Keeping each other warm was paramount.
It makes me sound stupid, but I forget so many times when watching this that they werent around!
Anyone no where that pub is stan and Eddie went in
Not sure but it looks like it's around Pendleton area (M6).
