I've just binge-watched 2 years worth of classic Corrie at a fairly crap point in my life. I stumbled across it on UA-cam after too many wines about a week ago. Thank you ProfessionalGun66 for the quality uploads of a British show that reminds us all of when Corrie was unmissable. Keep 'em coming. xx

Bear in mind that in the 1980s the world was nowhere near as liberal as it is today when it comes to homosexuality and equality. Corrie producers stood by him. He was caught again later with what Peter suspected was a sting operation. The investigations and publicity that followed took its toll on Peter's health.
I honestly think Bill Podmore made a mistake killing off Renee. She was a great character, sarcastic and a hopeless gossip. It’s my 3rd time watching these episodes and I always feel at a bit of a loss.
I agree Liam. With all due respect to Brian Mosely, Alf Roberts was one of the wettest characters in Corrie. No one would have missed him. Renee had potential that the writers clearly couldn't be arsed to work on.
Agreed. He probably thought the viewers wouldn't care about her death, but there definitely is a conspicuous void there because of her permanent absence. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who really liked her character and hates how they killed her off.
R. Brian couldn't act his way out of a paper bag. I wish he'd backflip his way right out the door. And Gail's character fluctuated between whiney nag, ickle baby voiced child, and self righteously angry, flouncy outbursts. Not a redeemable quality in sight. She also had a face like a muffin.

I loved Renee, she was a great character, funny, sarcastic, quick witted.... then she met Alf and I thought their relationship was brilliant. I saw her die on screen when I was 7 and have never forgotten the sight of her lying on the seat, staring... for me it was a shame they killed her off.
Gail and Brian moving into their new house - they reminded me things like toasters and irons used to come with no plug on them - them were the days elecrical appliances with no plugs and suitcases with no wheels - how did we manage

Poor Renee - still Madge Hindle must have been relieved it was just the character they killed off - i liked both the character and the actress its a shame she got the chop
Remember hating ivy and Brian back then. Proper little mummy's boy and ivy was every daughter in law's nightmare. But I suppose that's the greatness of the actors.

I listened to an interview with Madge Hindle the other day - she’s still going strong. Said she & Bryan Moseley thought the Renee & Alf relationship was good but that Podmore & others in the cast didn’t think it worked. She said that Bryan was disappointed she was written out because he wanted Alf to have a lasting and happy relationship. She said she’s still good friends with some including Thelma Barlow and that her young daughter hated seeing her on screen death. I think it’s a shame they wrote Renee out. She was more interesting than Alf!
Where was Julie Goodyear throughout all the Rene business? Seems strange that Bet wasn't involved as they were such great mates - presumably something personal in real life.
That's exactly what I was thinking. Maybe Julie Goodyear had annual leave, if so it was very bad timing, as Bet was such good pals with Renee and it looked odd that she wasn't around.
The bolshy 'stepfather' of the neglected children also played the posh hotel manager in the episode where Stan & Hilda win a weekend away at a 4 star hotel. I think he also appeared in another role in Corrie, though I could be wrong. And of course he went on to play Detective Chief Superintendant Brownlow in The Bill. 😊

Emily has no good judgement or instincts whatsoever over this slimeball Arnold. I can pick a bad person a mile off. Always have been able to. It's interesting that this outdoor set has a real viaduct that people can go through. I don't remember the second outdoor set, which would have been from 1982, from what I remember ever having one. And Grape Street was a real residential street in Manchester from what I've read. So why didn't Granada keep the real houses and just build half front facades?

Alf was blamed for Renees death by her mother and the guy who was chased away from the shop was Peter Ellis who previously played a policeman, a fireman and another character. He also played a policeman on Emmerdale Farm before playing Chief Superintendent Charles Brownlow in The Bill.

Loved coronation street in the 70/80s ,it was full of brilliant characters, and very funny compared to todays in name only version my god how boring and depressing it is now, especially miserable eeyore peter barlow,what a depressing character pleade get rid ,bet Betty hilder ogden and stanley ,mrs walker albert tatlock, oh how i wish it was that good again but no not todsy it has to be aimed at the young as if they dont get enough of their own way ,cant stand it now , happy days sadly gone
2:20 Betty was so sweet - pity she was underused in latter years. My earliest memories are of watching Corrie on Irish TV with my mum in the early 80s. She has been watching it since the 60s! It's funny to see a young-Gail, years before OurBrian® was murdered and she was driven into the canal by yer man 😂

How did people watch this when it aired without the luxury of skipping through every Gail & Bryan and Emily & Arnold scene? (i like emily but those faux-concerned / judgemental facial expressions every 5 seconds drive me mad!!)

Hilda was poisoned chalice at times. Her interfering & thirst for gossip went way too far sometimes… I mean even spreading scandal and bad words about the death of Renee & Alfs possible drinking. Alf wasn’t even at the damn wheel when Renee died & her car was stationary.. FFS!.. it was a pure accident..,
I liked Freds wife Edna, she was fun and glamerous - its a shame she got killed off - i think Vera Duckworth was brought in to replace her they were similar type characters
People say these years were the peak, but I don't understand why the writers thought Brian and Gail were in any way an interesting storyline. There's no humour in it, and I can happily live without ever knowing anything about them

Renee only had a learner's permit, so legally Alf was in charge of the vehicle - which he had vacated, leaving the learner at the wheel alone in the car, and he failed the breathalyzer, making it even worse.

It's easy to forget how well the actress performs as dithering Mavis.
Such a shame what happened to Peter Dudley, Bert was such a great character pity he wasn’t around longer.
Other than the fact that he says "you know what I mean" at least once in every sentence, he is the best Tilsley.
Very sad! I was really shocked to find out he was only 44 in these episodes then died at 48! He was lovely 😊
