Hey guys! Back at it again with another iconic JDM hero car, the 1997 GC8 Subaru Impreza STI Type R Version 3. Try saying that ten times fast! This car has been resurrected into quite the street machine, using an engine and various parts from many different subaru models, both classic and modern. It's a good balance between practicality and performance, the way all Subarus should be. Enjoy!

Most fun I've ever had driving a Subaru. Can't wait to re-visit this one and hang out with Jordan again once it has power steering and is fully tuned! Look out for a video feature this weekend on the Shelby GT350R!! Variety is key.
My favorite sti models(gc8).
Is this filmed on Van Isle?
Roads Untraveled You guys need some “LSX” jet tags.
What are the specs?
Roads Untraveled I like the dslr mount.
10 years into the ownership of my JDM GC8. What a fun car it is!
Add a 2007 sti under your 2.5rs additive
@@gregorywilson1273 why remove the godly jdm 2.0 and swap a puny usdm 2.5?WHY?! also what 2.5rs? Its a jdm GC8 -,-
@@KauBoySL It started as Canadian 2.5RS was swapped with USDM 2007STI swap using RA short block and complete rebuilt heads as start is a left hand drive car
@@gregorywilson1273 dafuq are you talking about? Im talking about my car you dumbness
GC still the most attractive Impreza model to date
#SaveTheManuals 100% agree
This, or the hawkeye
Blob for the win
Damn right, this coming from a GR Sti owner
This n the bug eye.
This reminds me of my buddy's old '00 2.5RS. It had a built Forester 2.5 with a T3/T4 turbo. Thing was such a little ripper, and had to be one of the fastest cars anyone owned back in our high school, at least at the time when we were going. I still miss that car, and I hope to channel some of that energy into my Speed3.
Subaru AWD puts in work, I have done some REALLY DUMB things in my Subaru during downpours and it just hooks and goes, it's almost scary sometimes because I came from an old jeep that would slide if the road was remotely loose
Dude same like I feel like I'm gonna slide and die but nopeee it hooked like a champ pulled me through the corner
Iv owned my rsti for over 4 years and I have to say its been the funnest car iv ever owned. most likely will keep it for life.
I love the 1st gen Imprezas whether the GC or GM but especially the GFs
I have a v3 sti gf8, best car in the world.
GF8 FTW 😍 @luna_gf8 is quite a nice one.
broo the moment u said "ur probably smiling" bruhh i died. i started smiling wayyy b4
Probably my most sought after car. Amazing
What Color is your Subaru?

2:52 sounded like a dragon from game of thrones, I love it.
That external gate sounds vicious! brings back memories:) I miss my race car. Great video, Aloha from Maui🤙
I can't stand that sound. It ruins the otherwise beautiful exhaust sound.
@@ozzypawsborneprinceofbarkness i agree : )
Yea. This motivates me getting back to rsti’ing my 95 imp L 2.2 coupe
Just got my 1997 GF8 STi Version III a couple weeks ago imported from japan. 1 out of 1006 in production for that version and its amazing. I have owned and driven newer WRX and STi and none compare to the 90s chasis Subarus.
Love the rhymes:
If you know about a gc8 you know about the weight
If you are new to the show, you might not know
get in the car with me
we will wrap around a tree
if u thrash it thu each gear
it will stick u to your chair
Yeah the gc8 is awesome. I had a 2000 2.5 rs and it was a blast. I cant even imagine how the gc8 sti mustve felt
Awesome build man I love it the owner is so dedicated 👍
I've owned mine for 16 years now. At 450whp it becomes a monster! I once drove mine to one of those "Xtreme Experience" events and drove a Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini and was very disappointed that my 13 year old(at the time) Subaru that I had built with my own hands was more fun than Supercars that cost 400 times what I paid for my car and I only had about half of the money of those cars invested building it.😂
I've had my V5 type R for a year now. Idk why you'd swap a 2.5 into it though. The EJ207 7900 redline is too good to give up.
Putting a 2.5 in it is such an American move!
exactly, i love the 207 it’s a masterpiece.
More lowdown torque tbh
@@Iamkoool2 true, but it dies out quickly. I have a gc8 sti JDM colin mcrae edition (783 of 1000), and also a 2009 sti spec c (1 of 900) only sold in japan.. both redline at 8500 and the power up top is amazing.
@@bangavlogs7362 which would you prefer to drive, if you wanted to have the most fun?
I love those big fog lights on the car 😍😍😍
I had one back in the late 90's and the first thing I did, removed the JDM 180km/h speed limiter. Next came Hyperflow top mount intercooler, ball-bearing turbo, tanabe coilover suspension system, and zerosport turbo back exhaust system. Best thing about the Sti type R was the close ratio transmission with a 4.444 final drive. Top speed at 7800rpm redline in 5th gear was 260km/h 😁.
A stock Sti type R was actually faster from 0-100km/h than the limited edition 22B.
Subaru just don't make cars like they used to anymore.
Another amazing video!! I love when I see a JDM car in my sub inbox! They always sound fantastic.
Getting a jdm swapped 02 wrx in the works, should be starting the build in a couple weeks, hopefully turns out ok.
Love the way the turbo skits.
Subaru does offer a 11:1 rack in certain RA models
Crazy that it doesn't even have the fender flares. I hope he eventually paints it all one color!
by far the best car reviewer by a long shot as always. ps. that thing sounds insane!
Such a clean example 👌 building my type r atm 😁
Best looking Subaru ever made this one always been my fav
Even as an Evo guy, have to admit, pretty dope car!
The Rumble is in our DNA ❤
In japan. Subaru enthusiast is called "Subarista"
Sounds like something you would get arrested for here
@@PritchyTurbo2000 and why is that, mister?
Such an iconic looking car!
God damn that is beautiful.
I would not trust myself on fun roads in this😂
In America we got the Subaru Impreza 2.5RS
The first gen version is a coupe with the amazing body of the JDM model STI. The funny and awesome thing about the 2.5Rs that it has better gas mileage, affordability, and lighter on insurance than the WRX.
I've just purchased a version 3 gc8 an I luv it
if youre ever in Nova Scotia I have a zenki s14 with a silvia swap id let you throw around
Subaru was on to something when they released this car with a vape vent back in the 90s
since Gran Turismo my favourite modeli is Type R
GC8. If you know, you know.
hatless Marcus! I like it
Ireland imported loads of these cars and it's competitor the Mitsubishi Evo 3 to 6, our country roads made everyone who had one feel like Colin Mcrae or Tommy Makenin
Love the open waste gate and turbo flutter!
Dude without the hat is day and night!
Im so thankful i bought my GC8 coupe
Mitchell Bertram keep it for life
Love my v3 type-r and armed with the short gears and dccd, makes for a very nippy car. Mine came with a fitted road flare, that’s still sitting there.
Damn this sounds like a Velociraptor from Jurassic park.
Miss my V4 sti type RA 😭 not quite sure why he's done a 2.5 conversion as the Ej20 in these was sold with a semi-closed deck competition ready block 🤔
adrian W the closed deck blocks only came in the pre 1997 Sti’s ( version 1 and 2 )
That car was incredible hope you had a blast driving
Gotta love the type r's! You see tons here in Calgary. Don't have a type r but I have a v4 sti that has a built motor B)
Great to see he was able to get a final drive in, best of luck with the cancer treatment mate.
Beautiful car, great build! :)
Now that is one fine subaru.
Let's get it real the reason this car will smoke a new sti is because it has more power, and it's 600 pounds lighter..there is a reason this body style was a two time world rally champion...if you want a dream Subaru... Collin McRae's tool of choice...being symmetrical all wheel drive, that torque steer is curious. Very nice video...as always!
This beast is freaking extinct 😍. It is one of the 300 that ever produced!
Wastegate mounted in the wrong place? I had a 92 Legacy GT wagon (manual) that made the same sound because the gate was mounted under the car on the manifold cross pipe on one side.. The old closed deck engines take a hell of a beating :)
V3 Type Rs are very rare, nice car. I have owned more than a dozen gcs and currently have a v2 WRX project and a Ver 4 Type R V LTD #181 of 1000
Only one I see forsale in Japan for 2,400,000 yen
That's my next goal is to have a legitimate built motor for my gc8. Usdm 2.0 with upgraded pistons, rods, oil pickup, and a vf billet turbo 48 with external wastegate. I already have a spare LGT transmission just need ecu and all supporting sensors. I may end up picking up someone's family driven built 02 to 05 and transplant everything into the gc8 without having to scavenge for every little part needed.
Most are piles of rust here in Scotland, shitty weather and the salt put on the icy roads just kills them
thanks to akira teshima (akira teshimades instagram) for designing this gc8 generation of sti he also owns subaru 22b and a replica of collin mcrae subaru impreza sti replica rally car
That Gate sounds weird.. I dunno anything about ej’s but I’ve never heard one like this with an external gate before
I'm glad I owned a gc8, such a nimble chassis and small power is plenty!
tacse keep it for life
@@StevenSanchez_95 i sold it start of 2019
Not a fan of external wastegates that just dump. Takes away from the amazing exhaust sound.
Exactly. Horrible sound.
Clean car, not a fan of the hood but to each his own. Thanks for sharing the video. 👊🏻🚙💥gratatta
Car is badass, I wanted to do a similar swap in my legacy but ended up with an EJ205 AVCS. Also ngl I feel like you gain baldness by just a touch every episode
man..these are super sick!!! great review as well!! how does one ask to review their car? mine is slowly getting parts and would love for u to review it when it's ready!
Marcus@roadsuntraveled.com :D If you're local to the Vancouver, Victoria, or Kelowna areas we can shoot whenever. We're in LA every winter, and a few other spots we've filmed in the past include Arkansas, San Francisco, and Atlanta but those are few and far between.
@@RoadsUntraveled sweet, I'm in north delta/ Richmond area.
Stock ecu's are tunable via open source.
that blue subie 555 I don’t believe the ECU for Verizon III (94 and earlier) was ‘tunable’. A guy named Rob used to tune them ‘Rob Time’ but it was severely limited.
@@williamhall2386 you mean Rob tune? All he used was opensource. Might have been difficult back in the day but we've come a long way in a tuning world for Subarus
that blue subie 555 Yeah lots of options these days, but my understanding were those early ECU like I believe the version 3 had) all required a board / modification to the ECU to accept any level or tuning (open source or elsewise)
@@williamhall2386 yeah I think your right. That explains why they came out with the Zero sports ECU. It was fully tunable
Lost me when you said 2.5 , then you said 5 speed and other than the model it's something I see every day ! Nice car but should have started with the ej207 and 6 speed , just me though , I'm in Saskatchewan and I see 3 or 4 gc8s every time I go out !
I don’t think you know any thing about These Subaru’s .. otherwise you wouldnt have said that. 1st this type r doesn’t come with the ej207 it comes with an ej20g. Ej207 wasn’t even produced until the my00 gen sti. 2nd the 5 speed in the sti and type r are very good compared to your standard wrx 5 speed. With short ratio gear box. Again Subaru didn’t have a 6speed option until my00 and that 6 speed was “bulletproof”
I would’ve totally kept that ej20g they are quite special coming off the Type r, factory closed deck etc. hearing him say he put that 2.5 in , hurt my ears 😵
@@Terminator4000 207 🙌
Scoobysnack 05 207 allday
@@Terminator4000 would do 207, or 2.1 in my wrx before going hybrid lol
@@Terminator4000 yes
that sound is amazing
souds like it needs a stronger wastegate. at every braap it dumps alot of air. how much more grunt do you get With a wastegate that does what it is suposed to?
Used to have one of these a long time ago. Love it, didn’t last long though, it wasn’t a mint though.
Yes gc8 gang!!!
You should have driven mine! Same but different, built with a 6 speed.
Same same. But diffrent
HondaMan Vtec very true!
The GC8 Is the Lightest Out of all off Subaru's line up ever made that's why its so fun to drive. The Weakness to that car is the Transmission and Engine. They aren't great but still manage decently
EJ207 is way stronger than the EJ257
2800 pound for 280 hp
Do an Evo 6.5 Tommi Makinnen Marcussss
the only a
subaru i would like to own
sad the FA20 tag is blue considering the cars trim is red D:
You need to drive a Mitsu Evo 3!
My dream car
@7.34 it sounds like the exhaust heat shield is loose (mine sounded similar), either that or predator is close by lol
I have to admit i love the equal length headers on a Subaru I even use them myself but that screamer pipe sounds horrible🤧
Was here looking for someone else in agreeing with this i hate the sound of this one and they have so much potential to sound so good!
It would be awesome if you did an older evo 1-3.
I love my 97 coupe, but I need to hit up my Canadian friends. So I can bring a STI over.
$20000usd in usa , 1,500,000 yen Japan
2:41 OMGGGG
Can you make a 4B11T tag... it's definitely worthy enough so I'm not sure why you don't have one already
s201 hood scoop ?? great car!!
Saying that a newer sti would beat this around the track is absurd, the new gen is twice its size with the same amount of hp, it wouldn’t even be a competition
Gc8 sti smashed a hsv gts in a drag race and a track 1999 in Australia, my version 6 handles like it's on rails
vt 2 Hsv gts (300kw ) 5.1 seconds / gc8 sti 4.9 seconds factory
Love that car and love Subaru period
I love external wastegates, but I hate it when they're tuned to sound as choppy as this.
Beautiful car !
type r?
with a ej257?
WHY THOUGH!
Anyways lovely build
My thoughts exactly ... Just put an JDM ej207 V8 in it
Looks similar to my GC8
No power steering? My STI is undrivable without power steering
Dylan L pussy 😂😂😂
Brilliant!
Anyone else having star wars ep. 1 pod racer flashbacks/ memories?!?!?
Dream carrrrrr
2.5 is shit unless its forged and built, jdm 2 litre engines are the best
@tyvek05 coming from an owner of Subaru's the 2.5 is shit, ringlands and head gaskets
Yeah you're completely correct, this owner is a dumbass. 2.5 is an incredibly weak motor. 207 is hands down not only reliable but is period correct for the car.
2 and 2.5 boxer engine means same problem head gasket 2 comes to forged piston some nice small things.
Only the old 2.5s were weak, the 2.5s in the Hawkeye and up are more reliable.
@@TimberWulfIsHere All of the 2.5's are significantly weaker, thinner cylinder wall at the end of the day. Unless it's semi closed deck or closed deck then it'll be more prone to failure than the 2.0
With all due respect, did this man swap OUT the EJ20 for an EJ25? Duuuuuuude c'mon
flutter go brazy
Does anyone know what blow off valve he is using?
How similar are these to what we got in Canada as the 2.5RS?
The similarity is only skin deep. They shared the same look and that is about it. And even then, the Canadian 2.5RS has the Impreza L bumper. Not the STi bumper the JDM and US models do. The 2.5RS is not turbo'd. It is a naturally aspirated 2.5 litre. The STi has better drivetrain, suspension, and all sorts of other pieces the 2.5RS doesn't have.
