2:05 I love the psychological analysis in these bars. I never considered his aversion to power was from seeing Goku's fate play out and feeling the consequences of that on the family. Not only does DPS have great writing and musicality, but his understanding of character writing makes this stuff so compelling
Gohan was never a fighter like his father he doesn't enjoy fighting until his saiyan instincts get the better of him. But that is certainly a way to look at it.
Bruh Goku has always been there for Gohan, the only exception was when he was dead. Plus Gohan an adult now in super he dont need daddy holding his hand . Goku's character flaw is his naivety in thinking everyone shares his love for fighting and breaking limits which comes from the saiyan dna. People who say Goku dont care for his family must not have watched the original DBZ in awhile or only seen the tfs version, if you remember the show Goku and Gohan were tight

Goku was a distant and neglectful father at best and borderline abusive at worst. The earliest memory of Gohan is when they're trying to pick a name and Goku is shown to be uninterested until his adoptive father's name is brought up. The next earliest memory is when Goku is barely paying attention to his son, lets his stroller go rolling down a hill, and then doesn't even bother to move at his top speed to catch his son who then hurdles head first into a tree. I'm not saying he doesn't care, but caring about your child is not what makes a good parent. A good parent is observant, supportive, consistent, and a guardian. It's a job and we all know Goku can't be bothered to actually work a day in his life. Goku was great at grand gestures, but the hardest part about being a father is the day-to-day engagement. Goku chose multiple times not to come home, because he wanted to train. He selfishly complained about doing anything (including providing for his family), but fighting. He only spent time with his family when it was convenient going so far as to never even introducing himself to Goten from Otherworld (which we know is possible) until he gets the chance to return for ONE day... which he then plans to spend fighting with his friends rather then getting to know his second son. The Funimation dub put Goku in a MILDLY better light as a father when compared to the subs or the manga, but actions speak louder than words. And his actions reflect those of a poor parent.

Im not saying if the council of dads got together and handed out awards he'd be even an honorable mention, but to say he's neglectful or abusive is just not right. Goku and his family are not the Smiths who live in the suburbs who need to work a 60 hr work week to live or play catch in the yard to bond with his sons, they are fighting family, It would be different if his family suffered from his training but they dont, both they and the world benefit from it. Being a fighter isnt Goku's hobby, its who he is, thats how he was raised plus he's a saiyan, thats the only thing he fully understands, so he bonds with sons through martial arts, the dragonball crew always bonded through martial arts, so what better way to spend his one day on earth than with his family and friends doing what they all love? Also he still lives with his family when he's alive, or not training to stop a world ended threat. So how is training all day different from a dad working a 12 hr shift? He may not be a bread winner but if he and vegeta slack off the world is doomed. Plus his training is a lot harder than a day of hard labor. Again im not arguing or fighting, I just dont think goku needs to be compared to what we in a working society would consider a deadbeat. Again when he has time that isnt required elsewhere he is doing that day to day engagement. Just my two cents
everyone that says goku is a bad dad, i would like to say that there’s a difference between not being a good dad and a bad dad, goku doesn’t do anything bad but he’s not always there for gohan, and he does care, he’s just not the smartest, he’s had so many nightmares specifically about gohan and chi chi being in danger. I think that given Goku’s situation and the fact that he had to save the world, was dead, has to keep training to keep them all alive, and that he’s kinda dumb you could say from being dropped on the head, he’s a good dad for what he’s done. But comparing him to other dads, he’s not the best.

I honestly think Gohan should have been the one to defeat Buu and as the protagonist in the Buu saga. Hell, the Buu saga should have been more like an epilogue to show the audience that Gohan will be the main character, and GT should have been about him growing up without Goku while having to deal with fighting villains and having to be Goku legacy as he’s growing up. Then bring Goku back from the dead at the end of GT while also setting up Super.
