    In this episode, we set out our requirements to get internet on our narrowboat. It’s an explainer video where we show how to set out your requirements, the options, a bit of myth busting and show you what we finally selected.
    A non-technical overview that really focusses on trying to demystify the 100’s of options that pop up when you ask: “How do I get internet on my boat?”.
    In the end, we bought an Teltonika RUTX50 router with a Poynting XPOL-1 V2 4x4 MIMO external aerial.
    Part 2 will be an unboxing & setup of the RUTX50 and some basic 'must do' security.

    Great video and content Colin. Thank you for taking the time to filter out the ridiculous, the worthless, and the too expensive while explaining what is needed. In the end many of us would have spent too much on too less because we don't know the details you have researched. Kudos for saving us from our own disappointment. I'm looking forward to part 2. Thanks

    This has come at a perfect time for us, living in a rural area with a useless land line, we have a sim router, but the speeds are not great. So this is just what we need to set up something better. Thank you so much.

      Thanks. Glad it was helpful. 4G may be a better router option if that’s all you can get in your area. Look at 4G, single sim only, there are lots in that space and around 1/2 the price of the RUTX50. The key for you will probably be external aerial. If 5G is being rolled out, it may be worth the extra cost to save you an upgrade later.

    RUT 950 router works pretty well 👍🏼

      It is. The RUTX50 is the next incarnation for 5G and a GPS antenna. We did consider this as it’s half the price but is 4G only. That may not be an issue if 4G is all you can get and 5G is not so important. Roma wanted the GPS option just in case I moved the boat and did not tell her where I was 😂

      Colin, the reason I think your video popped up was I was looking for an alternative to my setup. I had, what seems to be, the standard choice of Huawei B535 and Poynting ae (4G). This was with an EE sim.
      It's served me well for about 90% of the time. I'm currently in a bit of a black spot and was only achieving 2-4 Mb/s.
      I've swapped this for a ZTE MC888 (5G) and just stuck it in the window. I'm now getting between 25-30 Mb/s, which is ample for what we use. Obviously wouldn't cut the mustard for you but I'm expecting much better speeds elsewhere.
      The only downside is I had a 12v adaptor with my B535 and can't find one for the ZTE. Any ideas?

      Not aware of one BUT….have a look at the ZTE AC power supply it will have a power rating. Then get a Buck Boost/voltage regulator from your fav auction site. You can ‘dial up or down’ the 12v feed to match. These are usually USB powered with a little turny thing to set what you need. 18w, 9A etc. just find one that matches your needs. Pretty cheap things. They are raw electronics so stick it in a wee box or out of the way or both. Or ask EE support.

    Did you consider starlink/satellite at all?

    • @messinaboutwithanarrowboat
      @messinaboutwithanarrowboat  5 місяців тому +1

      Haha. My budget does run to that 😱 plus sat dish is a bit big on the roof of a boat and low tunnels and bridges.

    • @MartynDuerden
      @MartynDuerden 5 місяців тому +1

      @@messinaboutwithanarrowboat Starlink isn’t bad tbf. The dish is a flat panel and the Roam tariff is £80/month. The install kit including router etc is around £500 (or rentable for extra £15/mth I think)

      @@MartynDuerden I know. It’s actually very good, just operating cost is too high for me.
