I'm a Cherokee Indian and I met Wes Studi a few times at an annual powwow in Tahlequah Oklahoma. At our last meeting he told me about a superhero movie he was working on and thought kids my age (13) would really like it. When I found out it was this movie, I automatically loved it

What a fun underrated movie. They’re very unrelated, but I always used to watch a double feature of Mystery Men and Galaxy Quest, and always had a good time.
@@eatsmylifeYT I don't know if you've ever watched two VHS tapes or two DVD's back-to-back, but this wild occurrence happens called a "double feature".
This movie was great... and probably several years too early. I feel like it was a combination of the studio not knowing what type of movie it was which led to them marketing it as a traditional comic book movie instead of what it actually was and then the audiences not buying into those trailers and other marketing methods... and all that led to a low box-office gross. I think it's a cult classic but one that's been forgotten by most except by the few that saw it.
Comic book movies werent big enough for a comedy like this to make waves. The homage/parody aspects rely heavily on knowledge of the genre, which was known to the mainstream as something only interesting to nerds and children. Literally only the biggest few comic names ever made it mainstream, like batman/superman/spiderman, even well into the early 2000s, to where non comic fans would go watch them.

History trivia: "Mystery men" was basically the term for masked heroes (sometimes with powers) who fought crime - before Batman and Superman were created. The Shadow, Continental Op, The Spider and so many more.
Another hero film you may like is Frank Miller's 2008 "The Spirit" which is a different kind of hero film with similar visuals to the "Sin City" films. Critics seemed unfamiliar with the source material, they didn't get the tongue-in-cheek nature of Will Eisner's characters. Samuel L. Jackson plays the villain, The Octopus. Scarlett Johansson is his cohort. And of course there's the 1984 "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" starring Peter Weller ("Robocop") with Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow and Christopher Lloyd. I watch it once a year.
Another surprise actor in Mystery Men, along with those mentioned by the gentleman reviewer, was Wes Studi, The Sphinx. He played Magua, the vengeful Huron guide in The Last of the Mohicans!

This is one of my favorite videos of yours! I love the turnaround of Matthew being the one who's watching the movie for the first time. I especially liked his reactions when Dana Cook, Tom Waits, The Goodie Boys, and Michael Bay showed up.
I love everything about this movie. I showed it to my family. They were unimpressed, and my nephew was practically salivating to tell me why it sucked. I told him I didn't want to hear it. Now I relive old movies through first-time reactors like you. 😐
My buddies and I saw it in the theater, too. I've owned copies of the movie in various formats ever since. Definitely worth adding to any super hero fan's collection. =)
Glad you guys are back, as someone who’s had a lot of back issues and sciatic nerve ,I totally understand your pain. It’s impossible to get anything done when your body won’t move the way you want it to.
I am one of the few proud people that saw Mystery Men in the theatre back in 99. Great Flick! Just found your channel for the first time today. Loved the review. :)
One of my favorite exchanges is also so simple- Roy's Boss: When are you gonna tear down that jeep like I told you? Roy: We went through this yesterday, that "jeep" is actually an armored car of some kind. It's built to withstand bombs; I can't just rip it apart with a crowbar.
I remember loving this movie as a kid, then it "didn't age well" and people maybe thought the humor was too low brow, but after over a decade of MCU and DCEU this movie aged to perfection
Back injuries are the worst, I screwed up my back and now I can only sleep half sitting up in a reclining chair. Ibuprofen and a little bit of indica before bed helps too. I've also found that THC green tea is great for back and joint pain. CBD does the same thing but you don't get a buzz from it, I highly recommend the buzz.
For movies with a weird mixed-timeline settings, my go to will always be "Streets of Fire" (1984) directed by Walter Hill starring Michael Pare, Diane Lane, and others. Billed as "A Rock and Roll Fable" the setting seems to mix up aesthetics and sensibilities from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1980s. As an added bonus, the soundtrack absolutely kicks ass (IMHO.) I heartily recommend Streets of Fire if either of you haven't seen it yet. (Edited for typo)
Now that is a true cult classic. Very offbeat but somehow very watchable and has an amazing soundtrack to boot. Would love to see a reaction to that too.
"When he tapped on his symbol it sounded hollow... because he's a hollow hero." It took me several years before I realized that Captain Amazing's superpower is his sponsorships. When he loses his sponsors, he loses his powers.
So glad you’re able to join in again, Matthew! But please, don’t push too hard. Having dealt with back pain for a while now (not as bad but fairly chronic), es no bueno. Happy you’re on the road to wellness (please never watch that movie) and wish you continued recovery!
A lot of people don't realize that The Mystery Men wasn't just a satirical homage to superhero movies. It was also a, homage to The Seven Samurai/The Magnificent Seven. First you have your core group of heroes. They go on a recruitment drive and add a few more to their group making their total number of members seven. And a lot of the characters in The Mystery Men share the same role as members of The Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven. I'll use just The Magnificent Seven as my examples, as I don't want to have to look up all of the different versions of the same story. The Shoveler and The Blue Raja = Chris Larabee Adams (Yul Brenner) and Vin Tanner (Steve McQueen) The Bowler = Britt (James Cobern) (the highly competent one) The Spleen & Invisible Boy = Chico (the unwanted tag along and the eager youth, which were two separate characters in Seven Samurai but were merged into one for Magnificent Seven) Mr. Furious = Lee (Robert Vaughn) (both characters were unsure of themselves but came through in the end) The Sphynx doesn't really have a Magnificent Seven counterpart. Maybe Bernardo O'Reilly (Charles Bronson)? Of course not every character HAS to have a Magnificent Seven or a Seven Samurai counterpart in order for it to be an homage to those movies. But you can clearly see the parallels. The only REAL difference, aside from this being a comedy, is that most of the Seven Samurai and The Magnificent Seven died in their movies while all of The Mystery Men survived theirs. But what else would you expect from a comedic Superhero Magnificent Seven?
Fun fact: Mystery Men is based on a comic book called The Flaming Carrot. In the comics The Flaming Carrot is a member of the team with the Mystery Men in it.

What makes it even funnier is the Bowler girl's look of agreement.

Super underrated, I don't think there's been a better superhero parody film since.
My vision is terrible. I saw the thumbnail and said: "Is that an evening gown?" 🤣
And the missed opportunity to give Emily a title for her temporary sherpa duties... shame lol. Congrats on 20k. You guys deserve it.
I saw this movie in the theater. Actually because of Kel Mitchell more than anyone else.
Congrats on the 25K and getting better!
Surprised you guys didn't notice Pras from the Fugees. He was the Black dude with Eddie Izzard.
Fell down the elevator shaft on to some bullets. Oh gosh I lost it!
I am one of the few proud people that saw Mystery Men in the theatre back in 99. Great Flick!
Just found your channel for the first time today. Loved the review. :)
I'm not gonna watch this because I haven't seen this movie yet, I just popped in to say WELCOME BACK MATTHEW! I'm glad you're doing better!🤗
Blue Raja is played by Hank Azalea who is a famous voice actor especially in The Simpsons show
One of my favorite exchanges is also so simple-
Roy's Boss: When are you gonna tear down that jeep like I told you?
Roy: We went through this yesterday, that "jeep" is actually an armored car of some kind. It's built to withstand bombs; I can't just rip it apart with a crowbar.
Saw this in the theater with friends. Every time Mr. Furious was on screen my friends looked at me and giggled.
"The Great Value of heroes" is giving them too much credit. They're the "Dollar Tree Heroes".
*Walter Hill
I’m glad y’all reacted to this one. It’s so underrated.
Finally! About time Mystery Men got some love!
A fun forgotten bit of 90’s kitch. Not enough beer in the world! 😎
The Shoveler and The Blue Raja = Chris Larabee Adams (Yul Brenner) and Vin Tanner (Steve McQueen)
The Bowler = Britt (James Cobern) (the highly competent one)
The Spleen & Invisible Boy = Chico (the unwanted tag along and the eager youth, which were two separate characters in Seven Samurai but were merged into one for Magnificent Seven)
Mr. Furious = Lee (Robert Vaughn) (both characters were unsure of themselves but came through in the end)
The Sphynx doesn't really have a Magnificent Seven counterpart.
I bought this on DVD back in the day and watched it over & over. Was one of my fav movies at the time along with Dark City.
I used to have a huge crush on Gorafolo
You mentioned The Phantom in this, is that something you might watch here in the future or have you both seen it?
And The Shadow.
Fun fact: Mystery Men is based on a comic book called The Flaming Carrot. In the comics The Flaming Carrot is a member of the team with the Mystery Men in it.
Whenever I hear Smash Mouth's "All Star", I always think of Mystery Men first and Shrek second.
Love this movie. Funny as hell, great characters, and way ahead of it's time.
