  • This is Part 1 of a 2 Part series. In this video I share my experience of the purchase of my 1989 560SEL I bought off eBay in San Diego for US$ 750.00 plus US$ 1,050.00 shipping to Kansas City in early November 2020
This video should be of interest to anyone who wants to buy an older Mercedes for less then US$ 5,000.00 from eBay, bring a trailer or facebook marketplace etc.

A good example is the W123 oil cooler for my 1983 300TD. No longer available. Yet it is an essential part that often needs replacing because the fittings bond to the oil cooler hoses.

Wonderful information. I own many cars and maintain them because I love to drive them. I have noticed in the last 5 years how difficult it is to find good quality VW Beetle parts. I own a 1967 Beetle and a 1974 Beetle chassis with a 1952 MG fiberfab body on it.
OEM parts are like gold if you can find them. Replacement parts are Chinese junk. I have been scouring junkyards for years buying GM food used parts, cleaning them and storing them. I do the same thing for my 85 380se and my 82 380sl. Porsche 911 parts are plentiful, but the prices!!!! My daily driver is a 2014 Porsche Cayenne S and I am noticing how quickly technology is moving. My navigation system is an antique compared to what the factory is supplying now. I believe the parts issues for our newer cars will be multiplying faster than our old classics. Planned obsolescence is the engineering mantra today. No longer are cars being built to last a long time. 4 years and get a new one. It is shocking to see 7 or 8 year old Kia’s and Hyundai
cars in the junkyard!! Looking forward to part 2 of your video!

Just wanna make a comment as a W201 M103 owner : I believe that the parts problem is not the cost itself since MB would pass it along to us , consumers, but with profit. Up until mid 90's MB was all about premium quality, all the models were pretty much "forever" cars and the profit for MB came from the sell of the car, parts would just keep it on the road and continue to maintain MB status as the best quality car. Then the paradigm changed and cars were no longer made by engineers but by shareholders, meaning MB makes some of the money from the sell of the car but the bulk comes from parts and service. Why make exceptional quality parts that needed to be changed in 30 yr when you can make crappy ones that need replacing a whole lot sooner ? Today's philosophy is to make you, the consumer, buy a new car every 3-5 yrs and that they should be as disposable as the razor blades.. Todays MB is nothing like the MB that it was.

Peter, I know this is not a topic of the channel but you know that german saying what you should do after your meal if you don't smoke 😉? I have already eaten and it reminded me of the saying and you were on my mind(just joking, don't get mad). Best regards, IvicaFyM
