What is B-roll. in a Broadway musical. Isn't that a film term for 2nd coverage?

It’s footage shot for usage in a tv piece. To give the editor something to cut to. So it’s not shot for broadcast on its own. In the old days, you couldn’t shoot an entire show (could only do 30 minutes) and were limited to how much of a song you could use (never a full song). Which is why you see so many fragments if things are…older than 15 or so years (when actor contracts changed)

Basically publicists for the show would distribute a selection of clips on vhs/dvd (now internet) to media outlets for them to use when they covered the show
