Exactly what I figured, and I'm thinking the old one having both heat and a fan, he should convert it into a popcorn machine. It's one of the many things he would be good at. .
"Honey, get off the computer. What are you watching, anyway?" "A guy tweezering up some blue masking tape off an old set of instructions. Leave me alone."
I mean, we have the ability to fast forward through stuff like that, yet I never, ever do. I'll sit and watch stuff like that all the time, especially on this channel.
Adam, at the 12 minute mark I saw you struggling with the tape pulling up the paper on the old sheet.....please please try warming up adhesive tapes in this situation...doesn't take much to soften the adhesive and it will easily let go without damaging the paper underneath! Heat also works wonders on paper or other stuck on labels that tend to pull apart when removing. Love the content, your honesty, pride and passion for both the crafting and the crafters! From a lifelong model railroader, rc aircraft flier and lover of all types of model making keep up the inspiring work! Dave H
Thank you to the gift giver, Mateo. I LOVE old/new, or is that new/old, toys. Making things work from 20, 30 40 years ago is always fun. Hugs to the Tested Team. Thanx, Adam '-} I do enjoy your JOY in this kind of thing ❄🎄💙🌻💙🎄❄
Back in the late 1960's I had a junior high school (now "middle school") industrial arts ("now technology") teacher who at the request of the assistant superintendent of schools created a plastic technology program. One of the big suppliers of school shop equipment created a series of plastic fabrication machines; Warren bought one of each for his shop & asked me to help set up & test them. We had a blow moulder that made balls, a Styrofoam moulder that made ice buckets & an injection moulder to make screw drivers. All of them made repeated uniform products but there was also butyl dipping & vacuum forming. A lot of products came out of the later two processes that weren't sanctioned by the school administration. A group of kids would keep the teacher busy at the other end of the shop while others made the item of the day...
12:06 hair drier on high, 40~50 seconds at about 3~4 cm away, full blast on the tape and it will come off without ripping the paper. Good for old books where people have glued price tags on or "repaired" them with tape. For plastic tape you want medium heat, and you want to walk the heat around the whole area. The residue can be cleaned with 90 proof alcohol or Naphtha on a swab. Rolling motion and scoop will achieve the desired effect.
Watching Adam's videos is as good for their content as it is for finding people spreading the knowledge. Thanks!, this'll be useful sooner than I'd expect, I'm sure
Loving revisiting this topic. Your original vacuform topics on this channel are what originally got me into Making and set me on a path I've been on for awhile.
Yay!!! So happy to see your original vacuum former design being used!!! I remember you doing a video on the first one you made and used A LOT! The original one you made years ago is going to be a piece of fan history! Love you Adam! I wish you and the Savage family the best!
I love how proper vac-u-form machines are all the same red color. Shout out to Mattel. I have a couple of the Mattel machines myself, including one with the original box. I always wanted a bigger one but never got around to making or buying one.
even without working with these tools the excitement comes across. but I now want a vac-u-form machine :D I then have to remind myself that Adam has spent decades learning his craft so he knows what he's doing almost by instinct, so there's no way I could hope to get something useful out of it without a lot of practice.
you have been a huge part of my life from when i was a child to now. that being said. i have noticed i have so many qualities of you and Jamie. i am calm and live in the moment like Jamie but i have the same positive and easygoing outlook like you. i don't have the energy i once had but its always there, just in a different firm.
It is interesting to see the vacuum former. I used to work at the Lawrence Hall of Science in the machine/wood shop about 30+ years ago. Next to our side was Marshall who built science kits for education. He had a vacuum former that was hand made. Maybe about 2 the area of your commercial one. I've seen him making all sorts of plastic pieces which was fascinating to me. Your video brought back some fond memories. Marshall once told me that someone was making a movie and went there to see if he could use the machine to make some props for the movie. When Marshall retired and his side of the shop closed, he threw away the "molds" they had left on one of his shelves. I think they may of been used to make the compartments on the stormtroopers belts. Not sure. Unfortunately when his area shutdown, they threw everything away. This was 30+ years ago. I wish I could of kept them.
Years ago I work at a them shop that had a vacuum former that used a full 4' by 8' sheet of plastic. I got to pull a lot of different shapes using different plastics. It was great fun watching the shapes draw down.
Thank you for this video and all your others. You always stimulate my grey mater. In my head, I am designing a small vacuum former for making wind shields, for Dinky, Corgi and Matchbox toys. Of course I could buy a dental vac former but where's the fun in that.
I love that he took the time to give a place to display and celibate the manual! Also, my word for a vacuum former has been "Vac-U-Form" for as long as I can remember. I'm pretty sure that comes from Adam and this machine, but I had never actually seen a real one until just now
I have watched most all of the videos you make along with growing up watching mythbusters i wanted to say thank you for everything you do for the maker community and the community just in general. Now on to why i am actually commenting. With your new/old vac-u-form you gotta do a one day build making a stand for this one too. Just a idea, thank you once again for all of the great content
I made one recently and painted it the same way. I was like "ok, let's paint this" and the very moment, i knew exactly what color and paint theme it had to have.
Wow, what a tiny world as you said Adam!. Im currently building my own vacuum former following yours as reference and concepts from the ghostbusters video. To see this new toy with those kind words yo you its.. just, awesome. My own its almost finished, today i'll do my first forming with my own machine inspired in yours! ❤
That's like the vacuum former we had at school, I always wanted one of my own. As a side note I once did some agency work for a place down the road who had the biggest vacuum former I have ever seen, it was used mostly for making parts for buses and trucks like interior panels/dashboards and the likes, the machine itself was the size of a truck.
that's really awesome, happy for you adam! though i thought it would end up being the original one you learned on. now that'd be a piece with one hell of a story of how it got back to you
Lol the Curtis comment made me laugh. Yes I saw your visit there, and next time we head north I do want to call in for a hello and meet him, as I have been watching his channel for well over a year
I love that someone was kind enough to send this to Adam and put it back in use to the world. It's just a shame that it becomes just another tool to someone that it means very little to financially instead of going to someone that it could very much make a diffrence to someone that is growing into this space. I appreciate the generosity of Matao, I hope Adam passes it on to a person or group that will work it.
Came here to look for this comment. I find people gifting tools to the extremely wealthy Adam Savage very sycophantic. An up and coming artist/maker without the funds to buy this tool, would be a much more suitable recipient.
18:00 MY AUDIBLE GASP 😲🙀 when Adam pulls out vintage RadioShack panel Notching pliers.. I MUST own some!!! *starts scouring eBay* (I play Orks in 40K and am constantly kit bashing panels)
Watching Skeleton Crew, and the shot of the civic building has one of these low domes in the foreground. Kind of a diamond patten to the outer shape, but it’s got to be this as the foundation. May never be able to not see these ever again.
I was just thinking the other day, I wonder if Adam will have a visit with Craig on the Joy podcast. Then last night when I parked the truck there it is. Funny how often that type of thing can happen. Must be a glitch in the matrix. It was a good listen. Cheers Adam. “He used to be a ginger, but he’s alright now”
i'm only half way through the video but this is shockingly both entertaining and relaxing to watch lol also i'm at the part where adam's peeling tape and i would recommend a steamer or iron to loosen the tape adhesive lol ^_^
You missed his cameo when he went down under for some cons! I don't know who was fan-boying more... Adam or Curtis! They promised a future collab... (I know they said they wanted to do one, I figure if I say they promised they have to... If it's on the internet it must be true!)
I made a little vacuum former 10 years ago from 2x4s and mdf. It’s become invaluable and I’ve made about 50k from products I’ve made from it. I use my Dyson and my kitchen cooker. Just shows you.
I really wanna see you make the kings horned helmet with your take on what the rest of the armor would probably be. I know that sounds like a tall task. But I believe you are the man for the job. Then wear it to comicon🤷🏾♂️ love your work adam!
I honestly thought this would be the "OG" vacuform machine... The Mattel Vacuform! Still very cool, though. I have two of those Mattel units I want to convert for shop vac use.
One thing that has puzzled me childhood, when shown vacuum-forming, is the contrast with compression-forming, which I invented at that age. Vacuum-forming can only, at best, achieve 15lbs/sq in. Whereas pressure forming from above can achieve kilotons.
What is fascinating to me is, as Adam is making and notching those panels, they end up looking like the ‘plan’ or shapes of the buildings of Moonbase Alpha. The macro is the micro. 😁
You should use some low heating instead of solvent that can destroy the paper and ink as well. A normal hair dryer would work perfectly to make the glue a bit easier to remove.
Btw the tested videos are a rare specimen where you can run them Picture in Picture without UA-cam subscription, is that controllable by the channel owner? In any case a great service thanks!
I hope the current makers of star wars media consult with Adam and other OG model makers / SFX artists to insure they get the look right. How many of them know about that 3 notch rule for example? Little details like that can make or break the aesthetic of a franchise.

Nice shoutout to Curtis at CEE, great channel that one. The vacuum former visually reminds me of the old overhead projectors.

19:57 Adam is the only person who could just have an elevator floor button panel sitting around and I would never question it.
He's also the only person I could watch try to remove tape from a piece of paper for as long as that took without getting frustrated.
Convinced that if one was to press those elevator buttons the Cave would either lift or descend as requested....
It looks like it's the Elf elevator panel. Same number of buttons and layout.

wow what a great story. What was the hot ticket item to vacuum form in the 1960s middle school?

I had a Mattel Vac-u-form as a kid and had the burns to prove it. Now I want the adult version!
Love this. The excitement and feeling exhibited by Adam is contagious and very easy to relate to by anyone who’s ever worked with such cool tools.
even without working with these tools the excitement comes across.
but I now want a vac-u-form machine :D
I then have to remind myself that Adam has spent decades learning his craft so he knows what he's doing almost by instinct, so there's no way I could hope to get something useful out of it without a lot of practice.
Welcome to the cave, Vac-u-former, you have found your home, and we all couldn’t be happier for you…and us! Such a wonderful gift .
That tape had me on the edge of my seat!
The live camera work in this video was great! love that over the shoulder perspective
@5:23 Adam forgets he has a ruler tattooed on his forearm, this made me smile for some reason.
Little Red! I rewatch the “How to make space ships w a buck and vacuum” tutorials frequently ❤

Around 15:13, The Imperial March suddenly started playing in my head😀
Very cool of you, Mateo! The world needs more maker botanists. :)
Your old vacuum former! I've missed that little thing.
U always make me so happy watching explain things 😊

You can't imagine how much I love the fact you don't peal the tape off the clapper

Amazing how a plastic circle becomes instantly recognized as Star Wars with just some pencil lines!
that's really awesome, happy for you adam! though i thought it would end up being the original one you learned on. now that'd be a piece with one hell of a story of how it got back to you
It's the perfect time of year to make blow mold Christmas decorations.

It is a sign of the high regard in which Adam is held, that people are willing to send him stuff that he is more than capable of buying himself.
Came here to look for this comment. I find people gifting tools to the extremely wealthy Adam Savage very sycophantic. An up and coming artist/maker without the funds to buy this tool, would be a much more suitable recipient.
@@owenmorris6962 An act of kindness and appreciation, and you call it sycophantic.
never get tired of watching Adam work on vacuforming with his popcorn machine
His little quip about being fascinated that it was upgraded from a fuse to a circuit breaker was precious.
Great job guys. Thank you 😊
Adam is the reason I built a 30" x 24" vacuformer over ten years. It's made from all repurposed parts.

Yeah, he showed up randomly on a CEE video. It was surprising
Adam got himself shipped out to ɐᴉlɐɹʇsn∀ and showed up on Kurtis' video.

Had to scroll pretty far to find someone mentioning the intro. Was a great shout-out to CEE!
6:40 That is exactly what I have always wanted to say to Adam
I kinda remember having a toy like that in the 60’s when I was a kid.
11:47 I have done this cooking many times 🤣 when you get so absorbed in a thing that a dish instantly tries to burn itself
Loading and starting the machine, and *then* reading the manual... Been there, done that :)
Did anyone else look intently as Adam peeled off the blue tape?
I made a little vacuum former 10 years ago from 2x4s and mdf. It’s become invaluable and I’ve made about 50k from products I’ve made from it. I use my Dyson and my kitchen cooker. Just shows you.
Can't wait to see his vacuum current.
Wait hold up 😅 13:09
So we have the camera on the stand then a camera man wow 😊awesome to see it ❤
I really wanna see you make the kings horned helmet with your take on what the rest of the armor would probably be. I know that sounds like a tall task. But I believe you are the man for the job. Then wear it to comicon🤷🏾♂️ love your work adam!
Have you ever tried using compressed air through the holes in your buck to release the buck from your formed plastic?
Ronsonol lighter fluid is the best at removing stickers, tape, and even marker depending on the surface. Completely evaporates and leaves no residue.
No, honey, I can’t take out the trash, I’m watching Adam savage peel masking tape off of directions for a 30 year old vacuum former
I honestly thought this would be the "OG" vacuform machine... The Mattel Vacuform! Still very cool, though. I have two of those Mattel units I want to convert for shop vac use.

Oh my god the pulling of the tape was aggravating my anxiety! LOL
You started on my birthday!! :))
Mr Mateo, good luck with becoming Dr Mateo, sir!
Peeling game on point.
Hi, welcome to the cinema! Would you like some buttered vacuum?
Is that the same dome that’s used for the reactor on the underside of the Star Destroyers, then?
Heat the tape with a hairdryer to soften the adhesive and help remove it.
These vacuum forming machines are so rare and expensive here in Brazil...
If this hasn't been said before, or has been done, you should scan those instructions and upload them to an archival website to preserve them.
What is fascinating to me is, as Adam is making and notching those panels, they end up looking like the ‘plan’ or shapes of the buildings of Moonbase Alpha. The macro is the micro. 😁
Mythbusters and Star Trek: 2 TV shows that have probably done more to encourage young scientists around the world than anything else
19:58 is that some kind of royalty free version of Walkie Talkie Man?
You should use some low heating instead of solvent that can destroy the paper and ink as well. A normal hair dryer would work perfectly to make the glue a bit easier to remove.
Right about 14:26 - "I should call her."
Huh?

Ooh a nibble notcher, hello 1984
What case did Adam end up putting his new vacu forming machine on? Gonna Davis is going to be jealous!
Is that an elevator floor panel in the back ground of the end shot? What movie is that from?
I thought it was a weird popcorn machine until I read the title 😂
I have the same one 😊
17,000 people watched Adam peel tape for 25 seconds...
Its fun how Adam and Curtis have become friends...
Time for new vacuformer station so all 3 machines can live together. Jus' a thought
I don't know why....But I heard "Hey everybody, Ham Sandwich here" for the intro 🤣🤣
I hope the current makers of star wars media consult with Adam and other OG model makers / SFX artists to insure they get the look right. How many of them know about that 3 notch rule for example? Little details like that can make or break the aesthetic of a franchise.
