Use a C-Clamp or a small Bar Clamp to keep the motor powered. You could then plug the power cord into a foot switch to turn the unit on when your foot is on the foot switch. You could also extend the forward/reverse lever so you can stand up to use it.

@@post10Vlogs I have one of those 30 ton ones. 🤣 My family since I was young splits wood and that's how I keep my big muscles just from lifting it to put it on the splitter or on the ground for larger full tree width pieces. I have to hook it up with a ball hitch dolly that has wheels on it and pull it out of the shed every time I use it. Pretty much just gas and go. Only have to check oil every so often and drip a small amount of oil on the piece of metal the cutter area slides on to reduce wear over time from that as I'm cutting. Cut over 6 chords of wood in 2 weeks as they are tearing down the forest behind my house for housing development sadly :/
First winter with mine and I absolutely love it. Elevate it, preferably on something you can move around like a utv, and rig up a foot pedal. Cost I think$12 at harbor freight. You will fly through anything reasonable with this. I can split enough oak to run my smoker for 12 hours in under 10 minutes. Nice to have p[erfectly processed piles of wood for a smaller fireplace. Definitely wear eye protection and keep it away from nice cars as it will launch smaller pieces of hardwood a considerable distance
I would wire up a momentary switch in parallel with the current switch, this will ensure current switch will continue to work as designed. Mount the new switch in a position so when the lever is pulled it contacts the switch and when the lever is release the switch will be disconnected.
If you fold the packing strap upside down and pull the back part they tend to work better. I know this sounds kind of confusing but I rarely have luck undoing them like you tried in this video

I have a better suggestion for you Adam. For you splitter what a lot of the guys do with those. Is they use a small bar clamp to hold the switch closed or even eliminate it all together. So, the splitter is on all the time. They also, purchase the foot switch that Harbour Freight sells which they plug the splitter into than the cord from the switch plugs into an extension cord or an outlet. It works really well and leaves one hand free to handle your logs you are splitting.
I tried pulling those box straps cut my hand wide open. I always cut them now. I was thinking same time as you about your face being so close. Other than that looks like it works real well! Hope it makes splitting easier and faster for you. I also like when you say," I'm still learning" that's a very wise and humble person.
Make a stand to save your back. Use a Irwin quick clamp to keep the button pushed down and wire a switch mounted to a square metal electric box on the back of the splitter. You definitely want one hand free so you can keep the log in the splitter and control the log if it jumps out. Looking forward to seeing the modifications
i'm torn on whether it would be better or worse elevated. i mean lugging 14 inch logs up onto a table isn't going to be any easier...probably harder on the back tbh.
I have one like that and I put it on an old wooden picnic table. I know I have to pick up the log to be split, but it’s above waist level and much easier on the back and knees. Good luck with it.
Your video is excellent. I have an electric log splitter and yes, I have to press a button and pull a lever to make it work. I'm just used to it so I don't mind. It makes it safer. I've been splitting with it for 5 years with no breakdowns.

You could modify the switch to a foot pedal type and build a stand to set the splitter on so you aren’t stooped over on on your knee. I predict you’ll have these issues resolved in the near future. Thanks for the great content.
That momentary switch is probably there for a reason. It keeps the duty cycle of the hydraulic system way down keeping the fluid cooler and allowing the system to last longer.
It seems like you could replace that momentary switch with a latching one. It doesn't seem like the machine is damaged from running the motor with the release in the retract position, or during retraction. If it does, then I wouldn't recommend switch replacement. Also, be sure to be wary of the duty cycle on the motor. If it isn't continuous duty, then prolonged runtime (Brought on by a latching switch) can overheat the motor. Cheaper, non-continuous duty motors are often used in situations like this. You may only get 15 minutes of continuous runtime before you have to let it cool down.
Man, I wish had one of those back when I lived on wood heat. I would probably look at possibly setting it up on sawhorses when you are doing it outside. Then you can stand for the whole procedure. I had a wood storage rack for logs outside built out of recycled pallets. Made the base, 3 walls, and a little pitched overhang roof to keep most of the snow off. It didn’t house all of the logs. But maybe a half cord at a time. When it would get low, I would refill it from the larger stack. But land was a concern for me. If you have the room to build a little shed to house it all, that is ideal. I would get all of the wood I was going to harvest done in the spring. Look at the situation and buy whatever extra I needed in the summer when prices were low. I was usually all stocked up for winter by July.
Saw horses are a good idea, I wish this thing could be operated upright like the gas ones so you stay in the log up instead of it being sideways but I don't think it can
For splitting wood you could also try the cone screw method and that is fairly fast and easy and safe........there is so many different applications where they can be used like cone screws that fit in a 3/4 inch chuck for a drill press
When I started using wood to heat for 2 yrs I used an axe to split all my wood I then bought the electric 5 ton splitter after 6 month I hated the electric one because of the safety lever and then push button the I got a 22 ton gas splitter and split enough woods in 1 month that I had enough to last 2 years.

For opening those plastic straps. Flip it upside down or inside out grab the tab that would be up against the box and pull they usually will break but sometimes they don't. Love your videos love you love your attitude love your dedication keep them coming and I will keep watching

I purchased my 5 ton in early summer. I live in SoCal and the most prevalent wood here is eucalyptus. Funny thing with this wood is how hard and twisty it is. If you try with all your might and use an ax, the ax will just bounce right off the log. Very hard to split. This 5 ton from Harbor Freight has NO problem splitting this twisted wood. I have split rounds that were up to 15" diameter. Maybe not the first try or down the middle, but starting on the edges and taking slices off. Sometimes I have to work the round and flip it or just move it a quarter turn. I have it on a rollaway bench that I love. It hasn't failed me yet with over 2 cords split so far. As far as adjusting the ram, all I did was to cut a piece of wood and place it behind the ram so it won't cycle all the way back. Yes, the two hands to control is somewhat awkward at times when you want to hold your wood from raising up. I would also like to see some small spikes on the ram head to keep it from slipping off the wood sometimes.
When I was a kid we built a lean-to wood shed. I've got pictures of it somewhere. Did a stone foundation with tree wood posts and cross members. The sheathing was all sawmill slab (the outside cuts they throw away when they mill a log.) The slab was all free. They had to pay to have it trucked out when they got too much of it so we couldn't take enough of it. Most of them were 1 inch boards before they got the log square. That was 50 years ago. It's still being used today.

What I usually do with the two-step security is putting the machine on a table ot something stable, press the button with the finger and hold the handle down with my chest/stomach so you got one hand free
I’d totally just over ride the switch with button for motor by sticking it to ON. Then when you plug in it’s ON and lever does actual work. You could also rig up something with foot pedal attached to lever, so when you push foot down it goes forward then release foot to bring it back, like sewing machine pedal styles. Hey Post, I used to work in stocking. I found out if you flip this little straps the backs pull off much easier and don’t strip like the fronts do. Not sure if that’s how it’s supposed to be, but I never used I knife after I learned that. Kinda like a bracelet from the fair lol
I have a Home Depot model a few years old that is somehow easier but I have an idea: Cut a plywood "C" shape big enough to reach the other end of the power box when pushing down the power button. Then you still have youir warranty and in emergency you can stomp on it and it will fall off.
I wonder if Harbor Freight would even notice or care if the button was moved to another spot, I don't think they would notice at all if I moved it back before returning
Possibly build a bench on which the log splitter can sit - be good if it could be in the lean-to wood shed so the wood could be stacked more conveniently - working smarter not harder is my thoughts. Good purchase.
Something interesting In your video. Your state still allows stores to issue single use plastic bags. We have gone without for a year now. They no longer blow away and hang in the tops of trees, littered on the side of the road, etc. I think we are much better off without them. Sorry, didn't mean to go off subject. Good video. I see you leaning back like I was. Just in case. I got bit though. I was given one today for Christmas, and I consider it dangerous. The forced two handed operation puts the operator right behind the log, nobody to put a hand on top of the log should it load up and kick back. Exactly what happened to me this afternoon. The log had a limb, so you expect a chance of high pressure. I got that, and the log kicked back hitting my shoulder before I could get out of the way. Cut my shoulder through my sweatshirt and tee shirt. I’m going to wire the switch normally closed, and connect a foot pedal to control the power. Had my hand been on top of the log when it kicked, it would have just fallen away from me. This two handed operation for safety is backwards. If you can’t keep you hand out from between the ram or the blade, you don’t need to be near any power tool. I think a foot switch will make this a decent splitter. It’s something never had purchased for myself, and what I would buy is too expensive, a Super Split. But my son was worried about his old dad splitting by hand. 😃
0:35 -- You can speed up log splitting with Harbor Freight's log splitters if you weld a sharpened piece of steel to the wedge. (The wedge is too wide.) If you search UA-cam, you'll find several videos where guys have welded axe heads or similarly sharpened edges to the wedge.
Don't know if you read comments or not. The one I have Stays on. You just have to push the start button in real deep and it will latch. I put a piece of wood/short log behind the log like you were doing with the manual one, makes it a lot faster with a short log. Just don"t let it kick out the side and hit you.
To remove the straps without having to cut them, pull on the tab on the backside of the strap where they are joined. Twist the strap and pull on the tab.
It does suck to operate that two handed,Post. I know you can think of a way to MacGyver it so you can stand up. (Or you will have to get a stool to sit on) I always cut those straps. It is quicker for me and I don't get cut. No more work out for your arms.
I would rig something to keep the button pushed in, like zip ties or bungees or a C-clamp and push the lever down with my foot. The two step operation is to guarantee that people have both their hands busy and are not gonna chop their fingers off lol
I'd build a work table with some 2x4 and plywood to set it on, with room for a few logs..move the switch down by the control handle for one hand operation..
Another thing you might be able to do is get a button on a cord so you can stand up and maybe hold the lever with your foot and do it that way or put it on a cheap work bench still have the button on the cord put the logs on the work bench hold the handle and press the button in your hand that might be easier for you.
wonder if you could mount the button in such a way that the lever depresses it when its pressed down and releases it when you want to go back, still a nifty tool either way
Bought the 5 ton log splitter to use while camping only to find it won’t work off a generator, pulls too much current for a 3500 watt generator. Returned it.
Whenever at HF, I also tend to buy a dozen safety glasses along with a dozen box cutters, as they're so cheap. The yellow glasses are simple but more comfortable than more expensive ones found at HD or Lowes.
Hey Post 10.......maybe save some of the styrofoam and use it for patching holes and for insulation at the bread truck camp It's free and easy to cut and look decent if you make a homemade 12 volt DC hot wire cutter..... it's better than a knife and the styrofoam won't snap or chunk into little bits when trying to cut it

On the package ties….flip them over. If you try to remove them from the front, they will do what they did. But flip them backwards and they come right off.
Remember you might void the warranty or whatever warranty you have on it by taking it a part Some companies or businesses will do that if you take it apart your void the warranty on the product
Now I’m looking at your unboxing. Don’t worry what people say. Cut the binding with diagonal cutters. The manual one was a heavy thing and had no wheels. I struggled to put it in a wagon. Going to check Home Depot and see if theirs works the same way or you need a foot switch saxma.
Harbor freight sells foot switches. Put a clamp on the button and plug into a foot switch. You might put the splitter on a bench or make a stand for it so you spare your back some pain. Do you know where the closest place to recycle styrene is to you? A Dart Container factory near me accepts polystyrene for recycling, but the recycling centers don't.
It might be easier to use if you build a stand to set it on, and possibly use a ziptie or something to hold down the power button. just an idea, I don't know if it would work or not
Hey post, if you ever have a large amount of styrofoam you need to get rid of, you can use a little bit of gasoline or acetone and you can melt a huge volume of styrofoam down to tiny little bit. Like a whole 55 gallon drum full of styrofoam down to a 20 oz soda bottle size.

Often times I've found those plastic ties have a longer tail underneath, so it's easier to flip them over and grab the longer end to pull them apart.

I wouldn’t try to pull on those straps, every time I’ve tried it has cut my finger, I just use a razor or knife.
I use a knife every time. Way more fun and efficient.
Sometimes they are welded that good that they become a one piece.

Hey Post, I used to work in stocking. I found out if you flip this little straps the backs pull off much easier and don’t strip like the fronts do. Not sure if that’s how it’s supposed to be, but I never used I knife after I learned that. Kinda like a bracelet from the fair lol

I have a Home Depot model a few years old that is somehow easier but I have an idea:
Cut a plywood "C" shape big enough to reach the other end of the power box when pushing down the power button.
Then you still have youir warranty and in emergency you can stomp on it and it will fall off.
I wonder if Harbor Freight would even notice or care if the button was moved to another spot, I don't think they would notice at all if I moved it back before returning
Possibly build a bench on which the log splitter can sit - be good if it could be in the lean-to wood shed so the wood could be stacked more conveniently - working smarter not harder is my thoughts. Good purchase.
Wire in a foot pedal (from a sewing machine, etc.) in place of the switch?
I love harbor freight, they do have some good things there.
Something interesting In your video. Your state still allows stores to issue single use plastic bags. We have gone without for a year now. They no longer blow away and hang in the tops of trees, littered on the side of the road, etc. I think we are much better off without them. Sorry, didn't mean to go off subject. Good video. I see you leaning back like I was. Just in case. I got bit though. I was given one today for Christmas, and I consider it dangerous. The forced two handed operation puts the operator right behind the log, nobody to put a hand on top of the log should it load up and kick back. Exactly what happened to me this afternoon. The log had a limb, so you expect a chance of high pressure. I got that, and the log kicked back hitting my shoulder before I could get out of the way. Cut my shoulder through my sweatshirt and tee shirt. I’m going to wire the switch normally closed, and connect a foot pedal to control the power. Had my hand been on top of the log when it kicked, it would have just fallen away from me. This two handed operation for safety is backwards. If you can’t keep you hand out from between the ram or the blade, you don’t need to be near any power tool. I think a foot switch will make this a decent splitter. It’s something never had purchased for myself, and what I would buy is too expensive, a Super Split. But my son was worried about his old dad splitting by hand. 😃
I have one about the same size bought 10 years ago, 2 years ago got the stand for it. now my wife will use it now.

That strapping is really easy if you do the back of it, it doesn't split and just a little pull and it seperates.
The strap has a pull flap on the side toward the box.
0:35 -- You can speed up log splitting with Harbor Freight's log splitters if you weld a sharpened piece of steel to the wedge. (The wedge is too wide.) If you search UA-cam, you'll find several videos where guys have welded axe heads or similarly sharpened edges to the wedge.

The one I have Stays on. You just have to push the start button in real deep and it will latch.
I put a piece of wood/short log behind the log like you were doing with the manual one, makes it a lot faster with a short log. Just don"t let it kick out the side and hit you.
To break the straps without using a knife you pull the tab to the left or right. Do not pull back like you did as it will fray.
I always turn those ties (2:36) inside out and pull the tag end. They come right off!
The pine is no problem but would be cool to see how it handles oak or hickory
I don't have any of those, my entire property is 90% Douglas fir, white pine with just a few maple Aspen and Birch
I would put it up on a sturdy table of some sort. That would make it easier i think.
I think the manual splits better. With the manual you split the logs clean but with the electric I see you have to pull the wood apart.
No I have that problem with both of them in fact the electric one looks like if I kept on the lever it would go all the way through
I got this log splitter several years ago. Only good for small stuff so I recently got a 25 ton splitter

To remove the straps without having to cut them, pull on the tab on the backside of the strap where they are joined. Twist the strap and pull on the tab.
It does suck to operate that two handed,Post. I know you can think of a way to MacGyver it so you can stand up. (Or you will have to get a stool to sit on) I always cut those straps. It is quicker for me and I don't get cut. No more work out for your arms.
The way to pull the bands Mr post is to turn the band join round and pull the tab bit.
I would rig something to keep the button pushed in, like zip ties or bungees or a C-clamp and push the lever down with my foot. The two step operation is to guarantee that people have both their hands busy and are not gonna chop their fingers off lol
I'd build a work table with some 2x4 and plywood to set it on, with room for a few logs..move the switch down by the control handle for one hand operation..
Another thing you might be able to do is get a button on a cord so you can stand up and maybe hold the lever with your foot and do it that way or put it on a cheap work bench still have the button on the cord put the logs on the work bench hold the handle and press the button in your hand that might be easier for you.

wonder if you could mount the button in such a way that the lever depresses it when its pressed down and releases it when you want to go back, still a nifty tool either way

Bought the 5 ton log splitter to use while camping only to find it won’t work off a generator, pulls too much current for a 3500 watt generator. Returned it.
Whenever at HF, I also tend to buy a dozen safety glasses along with a dozen box cutters, as they're so cheap. The yellow glasses are simple but more comfortable than more expensive ones found at HD or Lowes.
Hey Post 10.......maybe save some of the styrofoam and use it for patching holes and for insulation at the bread truck camp
It's free and easy to cut and look decent if you make a homemade 12 volt DC hot wire cutter..... it's better than a knife and the styrofoam won't snap or chunk into little bits when trying to cut it
The two handed operation is a safety feature to keep your hands clear .l still think an old fashioned axe would be cheaper and keep you fitter.
an improovement would be to put the machine on a workbench so you can operate while standing. Now it looks like backbreaking working on your knees.

I've found you have to pull those straps apart from the back for whatever reason and they come off with zero effort

On the package ties….flip them over. If you try to remove them from the front, they will do what they did. But flip them backwards and they come right off.
Remember you might void the warranty or whatever warranty you have on it by taking it a part Some companies or businesses will do that if you take it apart your void the warranty on the product
Now I’m looking at your unboxing. Don’t worry what people say. Cut the binding with diagonal cutters. The manual one was a heavy thing and had no wheels. I struggled to put it in a wagon. Going to check Home Depot and see if theirs works the same way or you need a foot switch saxma.
Harbor freight sells foot switches. Put a clamp on the button and plug into a foot switch.
You might put the splitter on a bench or make a stand for it so you spare your back some pain.

A Dart Container factory near me accepts polystyrene for recycling, but the recycling centers don't.

Hey post, if you ever have a large amount of styrofoam you need to get rid of, you can use a little bit of gasoline or acetone and you can melt a huge volume of styrofoam down to tiny little bit. Like a whole 55 gallon drum full of styrofoam down to a 20 oz soda bottle size.
And of course you understand what that actually makes, Right? Kool knowledge, maybe not a great share...
